Why is it so expensive there? I honestly don't know what Nintendo's presence in Mexico is like. Has it always been this way? Seems like it should be a big market for them but perhaps not.

Can someone explain why the prices are so high there? I don't know how it compares to Switch 1 or other consoles, so it makes it even harder to assess

It's not a nintendo thing if you would look up the ps5 price. It should be related to taxes i think.(same about xbox series x)

What I never understand:
Aren't Mexico and Brazil rather poor countries? Like, people make less money than in the big European and American market, right? So ... shouldn't consoles be cheaper there? Why raise the price in a country where people already have less money available?

It is expected for the video games and consoles to be taxed heavily, it's just we aren't sure just how much.

Holy crap... those prices are asinine. How do consoles/games even sell in Mexico ?

Say goodbye to the LatAm market with those prices. That is nearly double the average monthly salary for professionals and technicians as reported by the Mexican government. Not even counting tradespeople and other types of workers. I don't see most enthusiasts saving up to buy the Switch 2 over the PS5 or an Xbox even if it's newer.

I felt that it's economical reasons like the tariffs and the imported goods taxes.

Because then those consoles would be smuggled across the border North.
So they are pricing it high enough to eliminate that, but also high enough that the extra money they get from rich folks that can pay any price, offsets the money they lose from selling less volume to poorer folks.
Same as they do in Turkey and many other places.

I don't think so, Brazil is a different story, they have massive taxes for imports, but Mexico and Chile are relatively open economies. There's a 16% VAT in Mexico, but that doesn't come close to the price hike.
Here's PS5 listed on amazon with a price of $10,731. It's listed as "on sale" but looking at it's price history it's been fairly constantly around that price. Switch 2 is such a crap deal in comparison.

So basically Mexico would need a Mexican language-only Switch 2, similar to what Nintendo is doing in Japan, to offer it for cheaper prices for locals, eh?

That actually would be awesome of them to do.
I wonder if it would work out cheaper for Spanish people to import it then buying the Spanish stock lol.

By the way, it's cheaper from people here to just buy the European switch than buying at the local price.

This is probably happening because these consoles come from USA (tariffs), and nintendo is selling at a loss there because they can't afford to lose that market, but they won't sell at a loss in LATAM =/.
Other Nintendo consoles aren't that expensive in Chile.

Apparently for Colombia
Nintendo Switch 2 $2.859.900 pesos.(667usd)
Switch 2 + Mario Kart World costará $3.119.900 pesos (728usd).
They can fuck off with those official prices, I was a fool expecting better, so Switch 2 is as expensive as a ps5 with the returnal + r&c bundle.

Still LoL even LMAO. Tan pendejos. Mobile gaming it is (would say PC but that also seems fucked).

Yes I believe this is the case. Nintendo products sold in Brazil come first from the USA as far as I know, and the price policy is defined by the Mexico division of Nintendo, which I understand is applied to other Latam countries as well. Tariffs are usually high in Brazil, but with the tariff over tariff situation the price will be ridiculous in Brazil.

Thanks, didn't know about that. I can pay those prices but the vast majority are going to look that and just buy a Switch OLED or any other console. Kinda depressing that Nintendo doesn't give a fuck about the LATAM market.

It doesn't matter that 99% of the population is poor if the 1% meets your supply and is willing to pay the price.

As I posted above, at that price it would become the priciest console on the market today, so it would instantly become DOA even before factoring the individual game prices.

Consoles are pretty much a rich people thing in those countries. Way smaller group of people can afford them.
Partially why mobile gaming has taken off as it has in many countries in similar situations.

and it's not even that we're currently really poor (as in Brazil) on day-to-day life, even if we're also a part of a global trend towards everything getting more expensive, while salaries and minimal wage doesn't, as well.
it's just, on top of that, we are also dealing with regional prices that don't reflect what we can afford in many ways.
which is such a shame because since the X360/PS3 era it started to rise and get as near as possible to parity on official gaming products.
now, ever since this gen started it feels like we're dropping backwards till eventually the local market shrinks and it's a much more than just a luxury.
something we watch people enjoy from afar.

What's interesting is that, at least in Chile, at some point Sony just decided to reverse course and started slashing prices, for example the PS5 Pro at launch couldn't be gotten for less than CLP1200k, but now it hovers between CLP900k-950k, and the base PS5 could be gotten for as low as CLP490k if you're going all digital.

I would assume it is two-fold:
1. Tariffs and vat may just lead to this price level
2. They might still decide to sell them at a discount because of the market being poorer, however, the wiggle room for the price would already outprice everyone who is not super rich in the country and the moneysacks on the other hand are not too price sensitive, so it would not make much sense to sell at a discount.
As Tochtli79 noted, that is twice the average monthly wage for technical jobs in the country; if Nintendo were to go down to "just" 1.5 times the average monthly wage for technical jobs, that would probably not expand their market much. As you know, video games are my biggest hobby, and Nintendo has a very special position in that regard, but if Nintendo asked for just one monthly wage for me to buy a Switch 2, I would be so out. Not because of disinterest, but because I could just not do it.

it's a margin focused endeavour, and there's not gonna be great profitability if you are eating the tariffs or if neighbouring countries are getting "cheaper" products
i mean, even Europe and the USA are feeling it nowadays. Nintendo just cut a portion of their consumer base because they won't provide the margins they want. Apple did that, Samsung did that with their premium smartphone. Sony obviously did that, and it's partly the reason why Xbox made the Series S. There's just more money to be made the further you go up the economical ladder
