What game is too long for its own good?
MadDogTannen Member Feb 21, 2023 2,911 Shamelessly stolen from Reddit, but it did get me thinking. Mine is FF XIII. Think I put in like 90 hours before I finally completed it.  Kadzork Has got mad skills!! Member Oct 27, 2017 23,780 My brain always goes to Alien Isolation when I see this question. Amazing game but it needed a bit of pruning.  saintjules Member Dec 20, 2019 3,021 Persona 5 imo. But i guess that's because of the Palaces. After a while it started to become a slog.   Lotus One Winged Slayer Member Oct 25, 2017 123,368 Persooooooooonnnnaaaaaa   Kyrios Member Oct 27, 2017 18,766 I could have sworn Metaphor ended like 4 times before it actually did lol   MadJosh04 Member Nov 9, 2022 2,600 AC Valhalla is annoying long   Firebrand Member Oct 25, 2017 4,964 Skyward Sword Yakuza 5 Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (Bros) A lot of games in general to be honest. I'm fine with 100%ing a game in 20h.  Jawmuncher Crisis Dino Moderator Oct 25, 2017 44,534 Ibis Island Alien Isolation definitely is longer than it needs to be. There was something else I played recently as well where I felt like it would've been fine being shorter but can't recall off the top of my head  Paroni Member Dec 17, 2020 4,721 I love it to bits, but Darkest Dungeon   Khaidu Member Oct 28, 2017 277 Alien Isolation as mentioned above, but I felt the same thing with Days Gone. It's a decent 20 hour game in a 40 hour container. edit: And of course AC Valhalla which is the biggest offender here.  Fulcrum Member Nov 7, 2022 2,036 Avowed. The game was like the first arc and do it again 5 more times. Also, Ghost of Tsushima was a slog but maybe because I was doing all the side content but I feel like that wouldnt have mattered if the content was more interesting  sderttreds Member Jan 6, 2023 1,198 persona 5, haven't touch royal because of that   Hippopuncher12 Member Oct 25, 2017 17,584 Cincinnati Persona 5. I couldn't finish it, I liked it at first and slowly just kept getting more irritated at the fact that it kept going and going and going.   mrmickfran The Fallen Oct 27, 2017 32,957 Gongaga Mario & Luigi: Dream Team I heard that Brothership is around the same length and let out a loud "fuuuuuuuck"  Raskol Member Sep 5, 2018 842 I don't know how I got through either Metaphor or Persona 5. I was dying for both games to end by the halfway point.   eXistor Member Oct 27, 2017 13,533 I mean so many, but Alice Madness Returns as a great example. Easily twice as long as it should have been and it didn't help that despite the levels looking different, they all kinda felt the same. Same with Alien Isolation. It was great until it wasn't. They built up all that tension only to keep doing the same trick over and over until its hold on you was completely gone. Should have been 5-10 hours shorter. Metaphor is a more recent example, it built up to a climax and then kept going for 15 hours too long. /edit: I saw the Mario & Luigi games mentioned. Great examples too. Dream Team was almost a 50 hour game for fuck's sake. Brothership too. That's a much better game than DT ever was and actually had a great endgame, but the pacing in that, my God. I hate it when games build towards a clear ending and then say "nope, here's another 15 hours". TLOU2 was awful in that regard, couldn't wait for that shit to end and it just kept going. To be clear I think games should be as long as they need to be, but most simply don't need to be. "Less is more" is a lesson that will never be learned I fear.  EvaUnit787 Member Aug 6, 2023 2,834 Valhalla felt a bit too long, but I just played longer in AC Shadows and did not feel as bad. I think there it is down to how much you enjoy the open world and story/progression. I felt Baldur's Gate 3 was a bit too long. I spent 180 hrs and loved it, but I felt the conclusion of Act 2 felt stronger than Act 3. Metaphor was way too long to get the platinum. I really hate a lot of these trends to put minor stuff near the end of a NG+ run.  steviestar3 One Winged Slayer Member Jul 3, 2018 5,364 Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate could have like 50% of its quests cut out and it would still be the longest Monster Hunter game. I know being a big asset reuse fest is its whole thing but they make you fight the same monsters so many times that it's crazy.   BoldPrompt Member Oct 27, 2017 166 Persona 5 for me. Started it and got close to the end, I think, but just couldn't do it anymore. I don't have the desire to get Royal or hook up my PS4 to see it through to the end.   Waveset Member Oct 30, 2017 1,068 Both mentioned already: AC Valhalla - need to pick it up again at some point but it'll probably take 3 stabs. Alien Isolation - not really a long game but I still needed a break, enjoyed it when went back to it.  Lowblood Member Oct 30, 2017 6,236 Resident Evil 6. Game has four campaigns. With padding and repetition, even. Cut that down to two and you've got an actual stew going.  Measure Member Aug 14, 2020 768 FF16   Fudgepuppy Member Oct 27, 2017 5,694 Pretty much all open world games with tons of repeated tasks. I don't care if they're optional, if you weren't meant to do them, they wouldn't have been made and included.  SofNascimento cursed Member Oct 28, 2017 24,747 São Paulo - Brazil Kadzork said: My brain always goes to Alien Isolation when I see this question. If all the side stories were super interesting and the characters were fun and exciting, I wouldn't complain. But ever since Origins, AC has turned into a pure "quantity over quality"-franchise and it never made sense to me. Focus on a tight 30 hour-experience instead of the 70-80 hour slog, and use the saved dev resources to make more new games. Valhalla was probably that worst in that regard, such a non-story, but the game just wouldn't end.  penny toast Member Feb 20, 2024 979 should not take 20+ posts to get to the real rot elden ring  Parthenios The Fallen Oct 28, 2017 14,258 Most modern games. That's...a you thing. The game isn't that long. I wanna say I finished it in 22 hours. And yes, I agree with elden ring. Mountain of the Giants is a terrible location. Should have just made the optional location mandatory.  Duffking Member Oct 27, 2017 6,610 I feel like this has been a trend among games I've enjoyed in the last 12 months actually. Avowed. Enjoyed a lot but the systems are not deep enough, especially the combat, to carry a game of this length with this much combat. It wants me to explore and do the quests, which I did, but it makes the game extremely long even making use of the fast travel. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Enjoyed a lot, but the final main area was an enormous drag and I wanted it to end. STALKER 2. Had a lot of fun but my god it needed better fast travel at the very least because it went on and on and on... Also from my backlog last year - Black Mesa. I was shocked that they somehow made Xen worse. Not that the original was any good, but it was brief at least instead of being a 4-5 hour long slog through a grand total of about 2 interesting set pieces and 8 trillion repeats of the same puzzle over and over. Almost no trace of the great "sequence of set pieces" design the rest of HL has. I'd last played it before Xen was added and frankly if I ever play it again I'll stop there.   His Majesty Member Oct 25, 2017 12,764 Belgium also Alien Isolation was the perfect length and is a masterpiece   castlegar Member Oct 27, 2017 99 xir said: would you rather have a game feel a little bit too long or too short? But I'll use a game I love as an example: Elden Ring absolutely does not need to be 150-200 hours long (+DLC).  MZZ Member Nov 2, 2017 5,419 Modern Assassin's Creed. Humungous maps that is filled and bloated by repetitive activities that feels shallow and copy pasted. It's not really an issue of the game becoming too long, but rather it gets really brain dead with how many there are and doing the same things over and over. People who say persona 5 are wrong lol It's not long enough as far as I am concerned.  Tomasoares Member Oct 28, 2017 5,866 Easily Crash 4, I have 70h of this game, wtf, and I went for 100% not the maximum 108% or something approach (I didn't go for any of the relics or perfect runs) The game is awesome, but the padding is insane with the n-verted shit and repeated segments (which you might end playing 4x due to n-verted levels). They went hard on justifying the price tag but passed way above the limit.  Vertpin Member Oct 27, 2017 6,681 It's Persona 5 and nothing will change my mind. I haven't played Royal and don't plan to. The game suffers from its pacing issues and length.
