Overwatch 2's Stadium mode is so popular it's getting its own roadmap
Overwatch 2's new Stadium mode has seemingly been a huge success, with Blizzard dropping some fun stats for the update—and a sneak peek at where it'll go nextTech23:00, 01 May 2025Freja is coming to Overwatch 2's Stadium mode soon(Image: Blizzard)Overwatch 2’s new Stadium mode was a big deal when it launched last month. At the time, Overwatch 2's Game Director Aaron Keller said "now is the time to jump on" if you're on the fence.As it turns out, many of you have, with Blizzard revealing some fun stats for the mode, and it makes for smug reading for Lucio mains like myself.According to Blizzard, the new mode saw 2.3 million matches of Stadium played in its launch week as players racked up 7.8 million hours, and as promised, the team is looking to keep expanding the mode.For context, that's more than double the launch player count of Overwatch Classic. Best of all? Despite being the least picked Hero, Lucio is also the one with the best win-rate.Overwatch 2's Stadium roadmap is stackedSeason 16's midseason update will add Freja to the Stadium mode, bringing the game's latest Hero into the mode.Article continues belowThen, in Season 17 players can expect Junkrat, Sigma, and Zenyatta to join, as well as Samoa: Control and Esperanca: Push maps.Season 18 will bring in Sojourn, Winston, and Brigitte, while Route 66 and London Maps will be added to the map pool, and then Season 19 will continue to add Heroes and a new China map.Blizzard is also planning a whole host of upgrades to Stadium, with Unranked Crossplay and shareable builds planned for Season 17 in June.Third-person is a huge shift for Overwatch(Image: Blizzard)"Since Stadium has a competitive system, it follows the rules of our core competitive mode, which doesn’t allow PC and Console players to group," Game Director Aaron Keller explained on the topic of crossplay."Since this is the only way to play the mode, we agree, and we’d like to do something about it. We’re currently investigating what it would take to make an unranked version of the mode. This would allow groups of friends to play together and would give us the ability to make other changes as well, possibly introducing a best-of-5 format to the mode."Article continues belowKeller also said the team is planning to release a new mode within Stadium called Payload Race, with two brand-new maps, and a new mechanic called Quests that will offer a random quest to players at the start of a match that dish out rewards.Keller also reiterated that the development team is still focused on the game's Core modes, saying "Stadium isn't competing for those resources: it’s giving us more opportunities to deliver Overwatch in a new, exciting way."For the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletters.
