What's the appeal of Kirby?
AnimeJesus Member Oct 27, 2017 5,388 Having no nostalgia for Kirby, I'm not sure I really understand the appeal for the series. I don't dislike the character but he is kind of boring from a design standpoint and most of the traditional Kirby games are braindead easy, kind of like baby's first video game almost. I'm currently casually going through Return to Dreamland Deluxe atm and I think I'm sort of enjoying it, but it's mostly to see what powerups will do and certainly not for the level design. I did really enjoy Canvas Curse on the DS though...that game rocked.  Nida Member Aug 31, 2019 14,934 Everett, Washington He sucks.   Milennia Prophet of Truth - Community Resetter Member Oct 25, 2017 19,736 Florida I wasn't a fan until the 3D game came out personally   OP OP AnimeJesus Member Oct 27, 2017 5,388 Milennia said: I wasn't a fan until the 3D game came out personally Click to expand... Kirby's OK   Dyle One Winged Slayer The Fallen Oct 25, 2017 32,774 First you draw a circle. Then you dot the eyes. Add a great big smile. And presto, it's Kirby! You ever try drawing Yoshi? You have to draw him like a hundred times before he stops looking like some eldritch horror and then once you can make him look decent you have to deal with existential dread of the saddle which sends a shiver down the spine of even certified threats and avowed haters like Jeff Gerstmann  Mekanos ▲ Legend ▲ Member Oct 17, 2018 48,312 The games are well-made even if they're easy, and often have extra challenges for people who want more, like Arena etc. I think there's a small handful of truly great Kirby games, and the rest are just decent-to-good. Not a bad spot to be in for a series.  NeonZ One Winged Slayer Member Oct 28, 2017 10,199 I kind of see it as a light and cute beat'en up? At least for Super Star and the main games starting from Return to Dreamland. Generally, you get some challenge from the post-game modes with revamped bosses and boss rush that hides the true final boss.   bionic77 Member Oct 25, 2017 33,188 My daughter always liked the design. In terms of just on design my son always liked Sonic.  Galactic Specter Member Oct 28, 2017 6,478 I think Super Star, Canvas Curse and Forgotten Land are a cut above the other games in the series. The other ones are too easy and can get boring quickly while these games avoid that issue always keep the player engaged.   DeliciousSunnyD! Member Oct 31, 2017 10,986 I'm not too sure honestly. Kirby has always been kind of a mystifying IP for me too OP. Have always felt kind of similar, that the games are kind of inoffensive and way too overly easy. They really do almost feel intended to quite literally be "Baby's first video game" yeah. That's been the vibe I've always had too. | It's weird, because theoretically Kirby should really be something I'd get into. I can be cool with overly easy, more cutesy platformers/collectathons, but for whatever reason most Kirby games have just never really grabbed me. The most recent 3D game looked pretty good though and is probably the first time in forever that a Kirby game has looked super appealing to me.  werezompire Zeboyd Games Verified Oct 26, 2017 15,106 Kirby is cute and the games are fun. And there's more variety among Kirby games than in most franchises. Also, if you get into the lore, there's some crazy lovecraftian stuff going on. Like many of the games start off with Kirby upset about losing a dessert and end up with Kirby fighting against a reality shattering elder god.  Jesse_and_the_rippers Member Dec 22, 2017 7,992 Honest answer: most of the games are fairly easy and he's a cute character. The floaty jumps, large life bar, and plentiful power ups are a good intro to gaming for kids. Not to mention Nintendo is usually pretty dependable with quality control, so despite there being 900 Kirby games they all are at least pretty good.   KZXcellent One Winged Slayer Member Oct 25, 2017 4,161 Playing games with boundless joy, and also Lucifer.   Captain of Outer Space Come Sale Away With Me Member Oct 28, 2017 14,227 The 2D games are very approachable for kids since you can just float over most enemies and obstacles. There's a decent bit of challenge in some of the games in having the right power-up from the previous stage to access side paths in the following stage and the more recent games have new game plus-style post-campaign modes with more challenge to them. Triple Deluxe opens up a new campaign where you play as Dedede trying to save Kirby from the baddies. Kirby 64 has a great power up combination mechanic that lets you have more fun trying out different combos.   Lotus One Winged Slayer Member Oct 25, 2017 123,400 DeliciousSunnyD! said: The most recent 3D game looked pretty good though and is probably the first time in forever that a Kirby game has looked super appealing to me Click to expand... The move to 3D is exactly what was needed to renew my interest in the franchise, Kirby's future has never felt brighter.  AuthenticM Son Altesse Sérénissime The Fallen Oct 25, 2017 34,940 Quinton said: He's cute. I heard Robobot is good tho. Forgotten Land is easily the best game and is well worth a playthrough.  Don Fluffles Member Oct 28, 2017 7,610 Incredible power in a pint-sized package. My replay was earlier this year and I was surprised at how much I still enjoyed it. Doesn't hurt that it looks great in motion.  Hello Snake Member Nov 25, 2020 2,898 Canada I think I played a few minutes of a GBA Kirby. The only memorable thing was that he sucked up stuff into his mouth in a cute way.   Steeped in a Sea of Games The Fallen Oct 25, 2017 7,231 I don't think there's anything wrong with an aethestically nice looking game with fun music and powers that's also pretty simple. I play then mostly for the good vibes and occasionally they can challenge you. Same reason I play most of the yoshi games.   Poltergust One Winged Slayer Member Oct 25, 2017 13,317 Orlando, FL The games being on the easy side of things is to their benefit because it makes them perfect for kids. But even more experienced players can still enjoy them because they're still very well-designed and always have optional challenges and modes that are legitimately difficult. Not everything needs to be on the level of the Donkey Kong Country Returns. It's OK for there to be games that provide a smooth experience even for beginner players. It's not like the games are braindead, either. EDIT: Actually, does anyone here think the "one button does everything" control scheme is going to return for Kirby Air Riders? That'll be so ballsy of Sakurai to do in today's gaming landscape, even more so than it was 2 decades ago.  Scoopy Member Jun 12, 2024 700 Succ   BradenAndEggs Member Jan 8, 2018 2,136 City Trial   inpHilltr8r Member Oct 27, 2017 4,370 sometimes you just want a well crafted easy game with cute characters and an undertone of cosmic horror it's the anti-souls  Roliq ▲ Legend ▲ Member Sep 23, 2018 7,248 He is just a Jolly Fellow Also i really like how it also adds an extra campaign with harder bosses (games that also have one most of the time the only changes is just the player character) and a unique boss rush for those bosses that ends with a new one  Dice Member Oct 25, 2017 28,090 Canada Nida said: He sucks. I miss Kirby games being 'that' fast. They doubled down on the floaty controls...for understandable reasons, I guess. But yeah I miss how snappy this one was.  J-Shy ▲ Legend ▲ Member Oct 26, 2017 817 Canada Cozy vibes I love playing Kirby games after a long week and wanting to relax with a nice easy game that won't be too challenging and will have a cute and fun vibe full of a variety of levels and power ups to play with. They're on the simple and easy side to be sure, but there are times when those sort of gameplay experiences are preferable, so I'll always have a soft spot for Kirby. I recommend trying them when you're in the mood for that. They also have some really cool experimental gameplay mechanics: 64, Air Ride, Canvas Cure, and Epic Yarn come to mind.  FF Seraphim Member Oct 26, 2017 16,346 Tokyo He is shaped like a Friend. That's where Kirby typically shines for me, especially in Return to Dreamland, Triple Deluxe, and Robobot. My absolute favorite Kirby is Nightmare in Dreamland on GBA. It controls extremely well and the sense of speed to Kirby's run combined with the short length of stages makes it a lot fun to zoom through. Just typing this is making me want to replay it.  Magnet_Man One Winged Slayer Member Oct 27, 2017 3,504 Just a comfy and fun platformer with a lot of imagination and charm. And every game has 11/10 soundtrack, even the bad games have stellar music Also covers a lot of emotional ranges which helps keep my interest as an older player For example one game you go on an adventure to find your strawberry cake, another game has the villain realizing in his final moments he wasted his life trying to revive his lost daughter You will learn to fear a butterfly
