While Nintendo initially underestimated demand for its new console, the Japanese console giant now predicts the handheld to decimate the industry’s best console launch records on the first day of release. Nintendo Switch 2 launch predictions are massive In the company’s predictions for the next fiscal year, available here, Nintendo revealed that the Nintendo Switch 2 console is expected to sell 15 million units during its launch period. Alongside the sale of hardware, the company expects to sell 45 million games during that same time frame. For comparison, the previous record for console launch period sales is a joint record held by the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 which sold 7.5 million units during their launch windows. Additionally, the original Nintendo Switch sold the same number of units as its successor’s launch prediction during its first year of sale. Nintendo is in the midst of ramping up production of its new handheld following the unexpected demand for the device. Prior to the pre-order period, the device was expected to sell around 8-9 million units during launch, which would’ve still made it the biggest console launch ever. It’s worth noting that the release of the PlayStation 5 likely would’ve been a much bigger success if not for its release date. While demand was large, the PS5 released during the COVID-19 pandemic and a global chip shortage which made production slower. Furthermore, the console was hampered by a large-scale scalping issue that meant actual customers couldn’t get the console. While the ongoing United States tariffs situation has caused issues for Nintendo, the Nintendo Switch 2 is in a strong position to fulfil its massive demand in worldwide markets. With production spiking and a clear anti-scalping method for customers, Nintendo’s console launch should also be an organic one with a large number of actual fans buying the console on day one.
