Which Gears of War is the best Gears of War?
Wallace Member Oct 25, 2017 27,865 Midwest A Gears game is upon us soon so I was wondering what Era's favorite was? I'd have to go with the original. Best SP and MP. Simplistic fun.  2Blackcats Member Oct 26, 2017 17,443 Can't be original even though I love the campaign because horde mode is gears for me. Having not played 4 or 5, I'll abstain from voting. Aren't you missing one? Edit: yeah, missing Judgement  Patitoloco Member Oct 27, 2017 27,962 For me it's 2. Great campaign. Never played any multiplayer of any GOW.  shadowman16 Member Oct 25, 2017 41,244 Didnt really touch MP, so cant comment there. I enjoyed 1 when I replayed it, but I felt a couple of parts of the campaign havent aged as great. 2&3 still feel really good to play. 3's let down slightly by a couple of annoying tanky bosses, but the set pieces otherwise seem awesome. 2 just feels like a class act beginning to end. 4... honestly I dont like this for several reasons - hate the story, hate the new characters, hate that the first chapter is basically Binary Domain but shit - how is it that RGGS managed to make more compelling TPS gameplay against robots than Gears when they only made one previous TPS game and it was Yakuza Dead Souls?! Why do we not have properly destructable and dynamic robot baddies? I really hate the new villains as well, it feels like it just cheapens 3's ending. 5 is much better than 4 at least with a good campaign but still has the issue of lame villains and story... had a really garbage anti climatic final boss... The DLC campaign though - that's legit excellent, honestly Id put that up there with 2&3. Also, Judgment is excellent, it deserves to be on the poll instead of 4 ;)  Abu05 Member Oct 27, 2017 733 No gears of war judgment on this list??? Throw it away!! lol severely underrated gears game in my eyes   SuikerBrood Member Jan 21, 2018 15,734 Hot take: I preferred 4 over 5 due to the open world sections in 5 which I really hated.   Cameron122 Rescued from SR388 Member Oct 27, 2017 2,686 Texas I haven't played it in a long time but I remember liking Gears 2 the best. Also wanted to say Gears Tactics is worth playing 🥺   Betamaxbandit Member Jan 30, 2018 2,250 honestly...gears 5 is the only one ive finished and enjoyed since the OG. Just a really good game thats seemingly been overlooked i feel   Vico Member Jan 3, 2018 8,151 2 > Hivebusters > 3 > 1 > 5 > 4 > Judgment Though I played Judgment after the rest when I've played all the other ones day one so I don't know about that last one I have a feeling E-Day is going to be in the top 3.  Professor Beef Official ResetEra™ Chao Puncher Member Oct 25, 2017 23,066 The Digital World Gears 2 might simply be the GOAT sequel, up there with AssCreed Brotherhood   Bungie Member Oct 31, 2017 4,469 I imagine a lot of campaign skewing here because Gears 2 had the worst shotgun gameplay of any in the series. To the point where it felt fundamentally broken in multiplayer.   LewieP Member Oct 26, 2017 19,766 Probably 2, but Judgement is great too.   2Blackcats Member Oct 26, 2017 17,443 Also, I know it's not within the scope of the thread but I played a few hours of tactics recently and it's great.   Xater Member Oct 26, 2017 9,753 Germany For me it's between 2 and 5. I enjoy the campaign of 2 more but 5 is where the MP finally clicked for me.   345 Member Oct 30, 2017 10,080 2 then 5.   Bishop89 What Are Ya' Selling? Member Oct 25, 2017 42,563 Melbourne, Australia 1 and 2 are perfect. I like the original more though. Judgement is meh 3 is good but I didn't like aspects of it 1st half of 4 was crap, shooting robots was lame. 5 looks great but story is not that interesting.  Livingskeletons Member Oct 28, 2017 1,780 2 is awesome. Bigger scale story and the introduction of Horde mode.  JigglesBunny Prophet of Truth Avenger Oct 27, 2017 35,962 Chicago 1. Gears of War 2 2. Gears of War 3. Gears of War 3 4. Gears of War 4 5. Gears 5 6. Gears of War: Judgment On balance, I think Judgment and Gears 5 are sort of interchangeable for me in my ranking. Judgment's arcade style campaign structure drives me nuts, but so does Gears 5's open world segments. I hate the Declassified missions on higher difficulties, but I also hate the side content in Gears 5. I detest the lack of content in Judgment's multiplayer offering and the two weapon limit, but I detest most of Gears 5's new maps and the egregious monetization. Gears 5 really only wins because Hivebusters is a stronger ancillary campaign than Aftermath is.  Mr.Deadshot Member Oct 27, 2017 23,022 3 > 1 > 2 >>>> 4 > Judgement >>>>>>>>>> 5 > Hivebusters   Manta_Breh Member May 16, 2018 2,983 In terms of campaign 2 was the most improved and a ton of fun with some cool ass moments 3 was the most refined 1 was spectacular and was dripping with atmosphere 4 was incredibly safe 5 was amazing visually, but it suffered pacing issues from the glider section 4 & 5 both suffered from boring ass characters though. The entire nu-squad doesn't hold a candle to the old guard.  Hail to Starscream Member Oct 27, 2017 620 Gears 2 is the perfect action rollercoaster. Especially in the co-op genre unmatched.   Knight in Shining Armani Member Oct 30, 2017 9,410 Multiplayer: GoW Campaign: Gears 2 Horde: no idea I'm biased though, seeing as first Gears was my flrst multiplayer game.  dreamfall Member Oct 25, 2017 7,297 It'll always be 2 for me - like I dream about, those crazy XBL party days - I miss it!   HK-48 Member Jan 14, 2021 2,418 England 1 or 2 I'm learning towards 2   Sec0nd The Fallen Oct 27, 2017 6,940 They are all fantastic for different reasons I think. (Speaking of the original trilogy, all the others are just 'fine). 1: Most brilliant atmosphere, and the only one which I really loved the multiplayer 2: Most memorable campaign wise 3: Most epic moments campaign wise.  MrTommo2304 Member Apr 4, 2019 361 Gears of War 2 is the definitive sequel. It took the incredible framework of the original and pretty much just expanded on it in every single way.   The Gold Hawk Member Jan 30, 2019 5,684 Yorkshire * cough* JUDGEMENT *cough* Yeah, 5 then 3. 1 is fine and fun in co-op but it's pretty dated at this point. 4 is solid gameplay wise but it takes way too long to get into the story.  Egida Member Oct 27, 2017 4,734 2>1>>>>>Hivebusters>whatever. Survival horror-tinted Gears is best Gears.  Jacknapes Member Oct 26, 2017 3,820 Newport, South Wales For campaign, i'd go with 2 For multiplayer, i'm going with 3. Horde mode on 3 was something more to it than previous versions.  horkrux Member Oct 27, 2017 6,422 I voted 1, but 2 and 3 are also fantastic   SnakeEater Member Oct 31, 2017 1,348 It's 2>1 and then everything else First 2 games are peak TPS encounter-wise  It’s Time To Go Member Dec 2, 2017 22,261 3. The lambent aren't as fun to fight as Locust, but they did at least change things up.   Rob's Zombie Member Sep 28, 2022 2,215 Manchester, UK 3. I mean I love all of them including Judgement but 3 is where I feel the series was at it's peak.  Jawmuncher Crisis Dino Moderator Oct 25, 2017 44,667 Ibis Island Not a vote for the best but IMO 4 is better than 5, just by the nature of it not being padded out with open anrea elements. The open area elements of 5 just drag out the length of the campaign that could've been far more tightly designed had it stuck with the linear formula of the series l  Alex840 Member Oct 31, 2017 5,361 I played them all for the first time a couple of years ago and thought 4 was the best. (4>3>2>1>5)   DJwest Member Oct 26, 2017 7,866 Best campaign was either 2 or 1 imo   PieGB Member Jun 11, 2024 892 There's good arguments for all of them apart from 4 which is kind of dog shit. 1 is where it all started and it probably has the best atmosphere of all of them. 2 they suitably ramp things but some sections do drag a bit and they lose some of that tone. 3 I think is great and was a great stylistic swerve with the more deserty environments and the new enemy faction aren't too bad. 4 is just a fucking drag, main character sucks, robots suck, new weapons suck, new enemies suck. 5 has a really strong story with a new main character and the open sections really added a lot   Ant_17 Member Oct 28, 2017 2,871 Greece 2, for sure. Can't wait for the ps5 version   Duncan Member Oct 25, 2017 15,418 3 is really good.   Terbinator Member Oct 29, 2017 13,206   Corv Member Aug 5, 2022 626 3>2>5>1>4>>>>Judgement   SCUMMbag Prophet of Truth - Chicken Chaser Member Oct 25, 2017 7,148 They're all pretty good to be honest. I think it's a consistent 8.5/10 franchise. There's no major highs or lows outside of Judgement which feels like a side thing Even tactics is completely solid and should have got a sequel.  LAA One Winged Slayer Member Oct 28, 2017 3,182 I think 2 probably. It just has more memorable moments I can think of, the opening being on a rig and seeings TONS of horde along the way. Going inside a giant creature and chainsawing it's heart, Maria, Dom and Tai's stories and revelations, I just remember a lot more about that game despite the others for some reason.   beebop Member May 30, 2023 4,777 When I remind myself that 2 spends so much time underground, I think 3 gives it the edge. But also if I take out nostalgic feels from the equation then it's straight up 5 for how great it was to play.   super moustique Member Oct 31, 2017 9,746 1 and 5 are my favourites.   MXG Member Oct 29, 2018 446 for me it's 2. And the order would be 2>3>1=5>>4. First time I have seen era almost. Align with my choice order. Also I have questions. Those who voted 4, Why?How?  Rover_ Member Jun 2, 2020 5,412 for me it's 3 and 5, those are the ones i played the most and had most fun. but i enjoy every one almost equally, especially gears 2, which is the most nostalgic for me.  Pitchfork Member Oct 28, 2017 3,772 England Gears 2 is still my favourite campaign, but man I gotta show some love to judgement for still having my favourite versus mode across all of Gears - Overrun. Would love to see it make a return for E Day!
