Was the useless Magickarp evolving into the Gen 1 powerhouse Gyarados a surprise to you?

It was to me at the time. Beedrill and butterfree were pretty powerful early game, so I figured magickarp would give me something in time. Switch training. The good ole days lol
I was shocked how powerful it was. It carried my first play through and was one shotting fools.
Gamefreak revisited this archetype, Feebas/Milotic for example. But I still think Gyarados did it best.
Gyarados don't reach its peak powers until Gen IV, and physical/special split. I used it in Gen IV too.

It was a surprise that the most obvious dragons in Gen 1 were not dragon-type.

No, before the games were released in the UK I was devouring information in magazines about them, so it was "spoiled" for me in advance.

Nope
I think I knew all 151 Pokemon by name before I had the game

I was more surprised that I could fish Gyarados in my neighbor's pond (in the remakes).

How many people would have found this out without hearing about it first? Leveling up a level 5 magikarp with only splash is something not many would do without that specific intention. Maybe if you switched it out during a high level fight

The only reason i even bothered with a Magikarp was because i already knew it evolved in Gyarados from the anime

Yes, it was a surprise.
I leveled it up thinking something may happen, and when it did, it was awesome.
Same with Dragini or whatever.
Edit: Red is the only Pokemon game I've ever played to completion. Tried a few others, but never got more than 30 min in.

You were patient with dratini lol. Thing doesn't fully evolve until 55.
