Allies and Morrison joined by top practices on York Central masterplan
Haworth Tompkins, Sheppard Robson, Cartwright Pickard, Corstorphine & Wright, and 3D Reid have joined the 45ha scheme following an international design competition for Homes England and Network Rail, it was announced today (12 May). Allies and Morrison originally secured approval on the 2,500-home regeneration project in 2019 and will retain a lead role, according to the project’s backers. Sheppard Robson has been appointed to work on a Government Property Agency office, which could hold up to 2,600 civil servants.Advertisement Cartwright Pickard, Corstorphine & Wright and Haworth Tompkins, meanwhile, will deliver a series of residential buildings across the masterplan, including 20 per cent affordable homes.  3D Reid will design a hotel and Western Station entrance, and re-form landscape architecture will deliver public realm on Museum Square alongside new green space being designed by Grant Associates. Homes England and Network Rail have also appointed development partners McLaren Property and Arlington Real Estate to deliver the scheme, which is backed by York Council and the National Railway Museum. Once complete, York Central will deliver a new neighbourhood and district next door to the city’s railway station, on what is former railway land. Allies and Morrison partner Jason Syrett said: ‘We are delighted to be working with McLaren Property, Arlington Real Estate and the rest of the project team in shaping and delivering York Central.Advertisement ‘This is such a remarkable brownfield site embedded in the fabric of York and an integral part of its railway industrial heritage. That distinctiveness or “Yorkness” is integral to our shared vision.’ McLaren Regeneration managing director Tom Gilman said the practices were chosen because ‘they all had a proven track record in delivering and working on large-scale regeneration schemes, as well as demonstrable experience, knowledge and understanding of York and the surrounding area.’ A timeline for submission of plans and completion is not known.
