The Hazel Engine Will Soon Be Free
The Hazel Game Engine is a 3D game engine written in C++ and scripted in C# developed by popular game development channel The Cherno. The Hazel Game Engine is described accordingly: What and Why. Hazel started back in 2018 as part of the Game Engine series on YouTube. Hazel is a 3D game engine that you can use right now to create and ship 3D games, interactive applications, artwork, etc. We created Hazel because we have a real passion for making game engines, and we want to create and ship commercial games using our own technology. Some features and tech: Written in C++ with support for Windows and Linux C# .NET Core for scripting (like Unity) Vulkan for rendering, with an API-agnostic renderer Multi-threaded runtime (main thread + render thread) Physically-based forward+ HDR renderer Until now, the only way to access the Hazel Engine was by being a $10USD+ a month supporter on Patreon. In this just released video it was stated that the Hazel Engine will shortly be available for free. Going forward source code access will continue to be paywalled behind Patreon support, but the general public will be able to access (and commercially use) the Hazel Engine in binary form. This leads to the question of… when? The answer to that isn’t incredibly simple but can be tracked via this development roadmap. Once the development tasks listed become complete, a compiled binary version of the Hazel Engine should be made available for download and can be used freely in commercial and non-commercial capacities. In the video The Cherno also further mentioned his development plans including the intention of returning to Twitch streaming development of the Hazel Engine.
