Mooois New Geometric Drape Light Utilizes a 3D-Knitted Shade
For eons, we have been captivated by the graceful path of fabric, woven or knit. Chiseled into marble, detailed into mosaic, or rendered in oil, cloth has been venerated and imitated by every culture on earth, regardless of social structure or geographical constraints.Lifestyle brand Moooi presents the geometric Drape Light, a dynamic lighting solution by Canadian designer Jamie Wolfond that focuses on this interplay of materiality. A 3D-knitted polyester shade sits delicately atop two glass tubes of light, gently illuminating parts of the shade where the elements touch. The sweeping forms of the shade hang down from the tubes, cascading gracefully into darker hues where the light cannot reach. The industrial regularity of the tube lights meet the organic, flowing nature of knit, creating striking elements sure to elevate any interior. The warm glow of the Drape Light promotes a calming, serene atmosphere. Research shows time and time again that we are beholden to the effects of lighting. Tone and temperature is essential to creating an intentional space. The Drape Light does this beautifully, offering a range of tones in a singular piece, allowing gravity to do the rest. The essence of my design vision lies in material interaction, where the tension and flow of elements create a poetic dance of form and function, says the designer. The 3D-knit polyester shade is the star here, adding dimension and natural movement. Reminiscent of the canopies that flutter above the streets in Spain, this thick knit polyester material perfectly allows just enough light from the tube to escape downwards. A modernist showstopper, this piece is perfect for any dining room, lounge, or foyer. With smart, modern hardware and the subtle texture of the shade, this piece allows light to create layers of translucency. These dramatic swaths of fabric cut gracefully through the air, sails full of wind in a still room. The Drape Light comes in 78cm and 118cm both with the same width. The larger size adds more prominence to the piece, large drapes of knit material providing interesting views from every angle. The offset nature of the tubes is intentional, to fully take advantage of the organic swooping form of the shade.Jamie Wolfond is a designer deeply embedded in the concept of materiality. With an extensive portfolio in furniture, lighting, and everyday objects, Wolfond conveys the intricate within the ordinary by taking an observation from life and translating it into something transformative. Never ending where they began, hands-on experiments in the studio are essential to how the process works.Moooi is a lifestyle brand that specializes in premium furniture and home wares, establishing themselves as a go-to for contemporary and eclectic pieces.
