Major changes are underway at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) as part of the EWR Vision Plan. Last month, the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (PANYNJ) shared renderings by Arup and SOM of a new Terminal B. This came one year after Grimshaw Architects finished modernizing Terminal A. This month, PANYNJ shared new plans to build a 2.5-mile-long elevated rail structure, dotted by three new stations, that will replace the existing AirTrain Newark masstransitsystem that shuttles passengers between terminals. PANYNJ has selected Los AngelesbasedTutor Perini CorporationandO&G Industries, a local contractor, to design the line and its accompanying stations. The three new stops will service EWRs three terminals: A, B, and C.While its existing AirTrain system dates back to 1996, the airport itself first opened in 1928. Its terminals were built out in the 1970s. Aside from the gleaming new Terminal A finished in 2023, Terminals B and C havent had significant upgrades in about 50 years. The updated air train will feature state-of-the-art people mover technology.
