All we learned from Witcher 4 reveal trailer as fans desperate for more
Witcher 4 has been formally revealed, and there's a lot to learn from the game's first trailer even though it's expected to be years away here's all we learnedTech14:33, 13 Dec 2024Ciri is a Witcher now, or at least on the path to becoming oneThe Game Awards was packed with reveals last night with a new Elden Ring game, urban combat in Helldivers 2 and an imminent Warframe 1999 release date (although nothing for GTA 6), but perhaps one of its most surprising was the first one.CD Projekt had already confirmed a new Witcher saga was in development, but the first trailer for the Witcher 4, a game likely still some years away from release, was certainly unexpected. The cinematic trailer acts as a great tone piece for what's to come, and fans have been picking it apart in the hours since. Here's all we know so far, and we'll keep it spoiler-free for anyone that hasn't finished The Witcher 3 yet.The Witcher 3 launched in 2015, followed by two expansions, and while it focused on Geralt of Rivia, he spent much of the game chasing after his adoptive daughter, Ciri.As it turns out, Ciri will be our protagonist in The Witcher 4, but she appears to have fewer powers than she did in the last game, with some theories suggesting this is a new reality that stands separate from the original trilogy, or that it follows on from one specific Witcher 3 ending. She's got the eyes of a Witcher, but in Witcher lore only males can become Witchers through the Trial of the Grasses, so it'll be interesting to see how that's explained. The stunning cinematic is drenched in sadnessThe whole trailer had shades of the Leshen sidequest in the last game, as a woman was seemingly prepared for her death at the hands of a mysterious creature as part of a ritual to keep her village safe, before Ciri pushes her aside and enters the creature's lair herself, using a potion and battling a pretty horrific looking monster that's all limbs. Ciri uses magic that Geralt didn't have access to here, suggesting she may have other skills beyond the standard 'Signs' of a Witcher.Expect new monsters as part of Ciri's questStill, with the young woman slain by her fellow villagers as a sacrifice for the gods, it appears likely that humanity will still be the most fearsome foe throughout Witcher 4.Geralt's voice is added on the end, too, saying "Time for a new saga, see you on the path", which seemingly suggests he'll return in some capacity. So, why all these monsters? In The Witcher universe, they snuck in through dimensional rifts during an event called the Conjunction of Spheres, and some have speculated that the phenomenon occurred again at the end of the Witcher 3, bringing yet more creepies into the world. There's a good chance we don't see anything further from the game now for quite some time, but for now, I'll be rewatching it again on a loop.Article continues belowFor the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletters.RECOMMENDED
