Schmidt Hammer Lassen renovates West Bund Dome Art Center in Shanghai
A steel frame dome that once housed industry in Shanghais West Bund Cultural Corridor is now a thriving cultural center. West Bund Cultural Corridor is already home to a handful of galleries, matched by a lengthy waterfront park thanks to a transformation headed by Schmidt Hammer Lassen (SHL). West Bund Dome Art Center adds to the areas dynamism; it delivers an additional 32,000 square feet of exhibition space to the corridor. From afar, red lighting inside West Bund Dome Art Center lights up the night sky with pulsating pinkish hues, rising up from the verdant park dotted by flowers of a similar color just beyond. The dome edges a verdant waterfront park. For us there was never any doubt that it should be kept as a marker for the industrial significance of the site on Shanghai, Hardie continued. West Bund has always been a stage for art and exhibition, but this is expanding into the performing arts and sports. Creating a flexible, yet unique venue was always our goal. The domes interior was left open so it can host a multiplicity of uses. This element is surrounded by flexible functional spaces, including a public foyer and second floor viewing gallery. The lower level facade is made of glass fiber reinforced concrete panels comprised of recycled glass aggregates and decorative panels. Reusing these low-carbon materials lends the project an iconic texture while also lowering the centers carbon footprint.Experimental art performance inside West Bund Dome Art Center (Tian Fangfang/Courtesy SHL)The renovation of historical buildings is inherently a process of reclaiming and repurposing space and structure, added Chao Chen, associate principal and project director at SHL and Perkins&Will. Therefore, our focus on material expression places special emphasis on innovative materials that align with the principles of recycling and regeneration, Chen elaborated. This approach aims to achieve comprehensive sustainability in the adaptive reuse projects.West Bund Dome Art Center is the latest new gallery to a bustling cultural corridor in Shanghai.
