Of course, theres now a modern way to play Diablo 2 with fancy new graphics as well as fan-supported updates like Project Diablo 2, but what about a new game in the series that recaptures what fans loved about the original?In an interview with Windows Central, Diablo 4 lead Rod Fergusson claimed that gamers dont actually want a return to the series original formula. Similar to his recent comments about how gamers turned the series towards live-service, Fergusson claims the consumptive nature of modern fans means a true, classic Diablo wouldnt succeed anymore.Diablo 4 could never be Classic DiabloIn the interview, Fergusson explained that Blizzard did attempt to go closer to the classic formula for Diablo 4. However, as players became used to the rapid progression of modern games, it became unfeasible.We were like, okay, this is what people love about the progression of Diablo 2, that idea of that very long chase, and so we launched that way with Diablo 4 and we found out very quickly that if you dont give me my Uber in my season, then Im upset, Fergusson said.The Diablo 4 lead explained that players have changed in 20 years, claiming that the consumptive nature of a live service has made returning to the classic series impossible while also being a sales success.While the launch version of D4 wasnt as good as peak Diablo 2, it did launch with a rather long grind that has since been beaten out of the game.
