Leica Geosystems, a leader in LiDAR scanning technology, recently announced a new partnership with SCI-Arc to help train the architects of tomorrow, the global company said. The Hexagon subsidiary committed to supporting SCI-Arc with hardware and software donations as well as scholarships. SCI-Arc will receive more than $200,000 in technology donations, including user-friendly LiDAR scanners for capturing photorealist 3D scans of areas, structures, and objects. A postgraduate program at SCI-Arc, EDGE, will also get a considerate amount of money in scholarships.Architects are increasingly leveraging new technologies to create immersive projects, which means that students need to have access to innovative solutions to stay ahead of the curve, Fabio Ponzio, executive vice president at Leica Geosystems, said in a statement. SCI-Arc has earned a reputation for preparing students for any eventuality, and we are honored to work alongside such inventive thinkers. Together, we can drive transformative progress in the media, entertainment and related design fields. The architecture school and tech company already have a history together: SCI-Arc students and faculty used Leica Geosystems tech for a multi-year research and art exhibition, Views of Planet City, a Liam Young project. The postgraduate programs at SCI-Arc EDGE broaden what an architect is capable of doing in the world by developing new knowledge and expertise, added David Ruy, SCI-Arc postgraduate programs chair.Despite competing predictions about the future, direct experience with emerging technologies has always been the best crystal ball, Ruy continued. I am thrilled to engage in this partnership and cant emphasize enough how significant this relationship will be for our students and faculty. The partnership announcement comes at a time of extreme distress at SCI-Arc, given the recent wave of wildfires in Los Angeles.SCI-Arcs communications director Stephanie Atlan recently told AN faculty members are rewriting curricula to better equip our students to confront these evolving realities.
