UK Will Not Legally Prohibit Game Publishers from Delisting Sold Games

UbisoftUK government has responded to an online petition claiming that video game publishers should not delist games they had already sold, saying that they have no plans to amend existing consumer law on digital obsolescence. The government stated that it would monitor the issue and consider the relevant work of the Competition and Market Authority (CMA) on consumer rights and consumer detriment.The petition titled Prohibit publishers irrevocably disabling video games they have already sold claimed that the government should implement changes on the legislative level, updating a consumer law to prohibit publishers from disabling video games, as well as related game assets or features, that they had already sold, without any recourse for customers. Authors of the petition state that with the existing practice, customers can be deprived of their purchase and cannot retain or repair the game.The claim gained more than 10,000 signatures, meaning that the government is required to respond officially. On February 3, the response was issued, stating that no changes would be implemented in the legal acts: There are no plans to amend UK consumer law on disabling video games. Those selling games must comply with existing requirements in consumer law and we will continue to monitor this issue.The government stated that it recognizes concerns raised by video games users regarding the operability of purchased products and that the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the lead department for video games, regularly engages industry representatives and monitors how consumers interact with games.Before, Ross Scott, the author of the Accursed Farms YouTube channel, started a petition named Stop Destroying Videogames, aimed at preventing game publishers from disabling the connection necessary for the game to function.
