While most maps are basically just three-lane arenas, the NetEases addition of destructible environments helps to make sure that every match can feel fresh. However, in a blog piece regarding the games use of Unreal Engine, NetEase revealed that the destructible environments were actually a huge issue for the team. Alongside the creation of Doctor Stranges portal, the games destruction tech caused huge issues early on in development.Marvel Rivals destruction was a huge issueVia the blog post, Marvel Rivals technical lead designer Ruan Weikan explained that the team was originally working with Unreal Engine 4. However, when working on the older engine, the game couldnt handle the massive destruction while also keeping solid performance. We encountered a significant technical hurdle: our core environmental destruction system consistently fell short of expectations in terms of production efficiency, physics simulation, and performance metrics, Weikan explained. With complex destruction and a modern approach to rendering, the Unreal Engine 4 version of Marvel Rivals kept hitting further technical limitations as time went on. With this, the team moved the project to Unreal Engine 5, replacing the global illumination system with Epic Games Lumenused to great effect in Fortniteand using the Chaos destruction system instead of their own tools.According to Weikan, the process of shifting from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5 only took the Marvel Rivals team three months but also resulted in significantly enhanced dynamic scene performance. Without this shift, the game might have been forced to axe its destructible environments, or sacrifice performance. While upgrading the engine and reconstructing core technical systems mid-development represented a significant risk, the results vindicated this decision, Weikang explained. The upgrade to UE5 marked a crucial turning point in development, with the final results justifying every resource invested in this ambitious technical transition. For more Marvel Rivals news, check out every leaked hero coming to the new hero shooter.
