Architects, designers, and creative thinkers are invited to draw up concepts for new sustainable and functional spaces for the seabirds which responds to the dynamic urban landscapes of Newcastle and Gateshead.The open call is part of the universitys ongoing Navigating Urban Ecologies research project which explores the socio-ecological dynamics of kittiwakes which can be found in large numbers across various urban and industrial sites along the River Tyne.According to the brief: The challenge is to design a sustainable and functional Kittiwake Hotel that provides a safe space for kittiwakes while enhancing the ecological, aesthetic, and environmental value of the cities.AdvertisementFocus on enhancing the kittiwakes experience by fostering their connection to nature and water (River Tyne). Design a natural, sustainable structure that seamlessly integrates with urban elements such as the Tyne Bridge, lampposts, building faades, rooftops, and more.Formerly known as Newcastle Polytechnic, Northumbria University teaches 37,000 students across to local campuses City Campus and Coach Lane and one satellite campus in London.The latest open call comes a year after local firm Ryder Architecture was chosen to design and deliver a flagship new 90 million Centre for Health and Social Equity on City Campus West which is located a short distance from Newcastles new Farrell Centre.The open call aims to foster harmonious coexistence between humans and kittiwakes while also contributing to the overall beauty and sustainability of the cities.Key aims include delivering sustainable and functional spaces for kittiwakes that blend seamlessly with the urban environment; boosting the ecological, aesthetic, and environmental value of Newcastle and Gateshead; and promoting ecological awareness with architecture.AdvertisementSubmissions should include a single A1 display board with a 200-word written description. Scale models are also permitted.
