RIBA reveals 14-strong shortlist for South East regional awards

This year's shortlist includes a mixed-use co-working and housing development in Swanley by Bell Phillips, a refurb of Brightons Grade I-listed Corn Exchange and Grade II-listed Studio Theatre by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, and a derelict church conversion on the Isle of Sheppey by Hugh Broughton Architects.BDP's major trauma centre for the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton has also made the shortlist. The practice was also among 23 contenders for the RIBA East regional awards announced yesterday, for its AstraZeneca research centre designed with Herzog & de Meuron.This year's South East cohort also includes two projects previously shortlisted for the 2024 AJ Small Projects awards: Built Works Drying Shed Sauna, a 45,000 standalone sauna on a farm in East Sussex; and Artefact's Triangle House, a 292,000 triangular extension to a 1950s house in Surrey.AdvertisementOne-off houses competing for regional recognition include a modern reinterpretation of a villa in the South Downs National Park by Sandy Rendel Architects, a new house in Hastings by Hugh Strange Architects, and a sustainable self-build in Whitstable by Liddicoat & Goldhill.
