With yet another failed Starship test this week, in which the ambitious heavy rocket exploded once again, you might reasonably suspect that luck has finally run out for SpaceX. But this degree of failure during a development process isn’t actually unusual, according to Wendy Whitman Cobb, a space policy expert with the School of Advanced Air and Space Studies, especially when you’re testing new space technology as complex as a large rocket. However, the Starship tests are meaningfully different from the slow, steady pace of development that we’ve come to expect from the space sector.“The reason a lot of people perceive this to be unusual is that this is not the typical way that we have historically tested rockets,” Whitman Cobb says.Historically speaking, space agencies like NASA or legacy aerospace companies like United Launch Alliance (ULA) have taken their time with rocket development and have not tested until they were confident in a successful outcome. That’s still the case today with major NASA projects like the development of the Space Launch System (SLS), which has now dragged on for over a decade. “They will take as long as they need to to make sure that the rocket is going to work and that a launch is going to be successful,” Whitman Cobb says.“This is not the typical way that we have historically tested rockets.”SpaceX has chosen a different path, in which it tests, fails, and iterates frequently. That process has been at the heart of its success, allowing the company to make developments like the reusable Falcon 9 rocket at a rapid pace. However, it also means frequent and very public failures, which have generated complaints about environmental damage in the local area around the launch site and have caused the company to butt heads with regulatory agencies. There are also significant concerns about the political ties of CEO Elon Musk to the Trump administration and his undemocratic influence over federal regulation of SpaceX’s work.Even within the context of SpaceX’s move-fast-and-break-things approach, though, the development of the Starship has appeared chaotic. Compared to the development of the Falcon 9 rocket, which had plenty of failures but a generally clear forward path from failing often to failing less and less as time went on, Starship has a much more spotty record.Previous development was more incremental, first demonstrating that the rocket was sound before moving onto more complex issues like reusability of the booster or first stage. The company didn’t even attempt to save the booster of a Falcon 9 and reuse it until several years into testing.Starship isn’t like that. “They are trying to do everything at once with Starship,” Whitman Cobb says, as the company is trying to debut an entirely new rocket with new engines and make it reusable all at once. “It really is a very difficult engineering challenge.”“They are trying to do everything at once with Starship.”The Raptor engines that power the Starship are a particularly tough engineering nut to crack, as there are a lot of them — 33 per Starship, all clustered together — and they need to be able to perform the tricky feat of reigniting in space. The relighting of engines has been successful on some of the previous Starship test flights, but it has also been a point of failure.Why, then, is SpaceX pushing for so much, so fast? It’s because Musk is laser-focused on getting to Mars. And while it would theoretically be possible to send a mission to Mars using existing rockets like the Falcon 9, the sheer volume of equipment, supplies, and people needed for a Mars mission has a very large mass. To make Mars missions even remotely affordable, you need to be able to move a lot of mass in one launch — hence the need for a much larger rocket like the Starship or NASA’s SLS.NASA has previously been hedging its bets by developing its own heavy launch rocket as well as supporting the development of Starship. But with recent funding cuts, it’s looking more and more likely that the SLS will get axed — leaving SpaceX as the only player in town to facilitate NASA’s Mars plans. But there’s still an awful lot of work to do to get Starship to a place where serious plans for crewed missions can even be made. “There’s no way that they’re putting people on that right now.”Will a Starship test to Mars happen by 2026, with a crewed test to follow as soon as 2028, as Musk said this week he’s aiming for? “I think it’s completely delusional,” Whitman Cobb says, pointing out that SpaceX has not appeared to be seriously considering issues like adding life support to the Starship or making concrete plans for Mars habitats, launch and landing pads, or infrastructure. “I don’t see SpaceX as putting its money where its mouth is,” Whitman Cobb says. “If they do make the launch window next year, it’s going to be uncrewed. There’s no way that they’re putting people on that right now. And I seriously doubt whether they will make it.”That doesn’t mean Starship will never make it to Mars, of course. “I believe SpaceX will engineer their way out of it. I believe their engineering is good enough that they will make Starship work,” Whitman Cobb says. But getting an uncrewed rocket to Mars within the next decade is a lot more realistic than next year. Putting people on the rocket, though, is another matter entirely. “If they’re looking to build a large-scale human settlement? That’s decades,” Whitman Cobb says. “I don’t know that I will live to see that.”See More:

Building the Engines of Intelligence We visited one of Dell’s U.S. facilities that builds the most compute-dense NVIDIA Blackwell generation servers ever manufactured. Modern automobile engines have more than 200 major components and take three to seven years to roll out to market. NVIDIA GB200 NVL72 servers have 1.2 million parts and were designed just a year ago. Amid a forest of racks, grouped by phases of assembly, Dell employees quickly slide in GB200 trays, NVLink Switch networking trays and then test the systems. The company said its ability to engineer the compute, network and storage assembly under one roof and fine tune, deploy and integrate complete systems is a powerful differentiator. Speed also matters. The Dell team can build, test, ship – test again on site at a customer location – and turn over a rack in 24 hours. The servers are destined for state-of-the-art data centers that require a dizzying quantity of cables, pipes and hoses to operate. One data center can have 27,000 miles of network cable — enough to wrap around the Earth. It can pack about six miles of water pipes, 77 miles of rubber hoses, and is capable of circulating 100,000 gallons of water per minute for cooling. With new AI factories being announced each week – the European Union has plans for seven AI factories, while India, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Norway are also developing them – the demand for these engines of intelligence will only grow in the months and years ahead.

Perplexity this week released Perplexity Labs, a new tool for Pro users that can craft reports, spreadsheets, dashboards, and visual representations, to meet users’ increased demand for AI productivity tools with greater autonomy and ever more sophisticated capabilities. The platform, a rival to Anthropic Claude, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and Google Gemini, can even work on its own for 10 minutes (or more) as it reasons through complicated assignments. “Labs underscores a broader shift toward multi-agent AI systems that plan, execute, and refine full workflows,” said Thomas Randall, research lead for AI at Info-Tech Research Group. Designed to handle more complex assignments Perplexity launched Perplexity Search, its proprietary search engine, in December 2022, just after ChatGPT dropped, and earlier this year released Deep Research (now to be rebranded as Research), which scours the web, reads papers, reasons through materials, and creates comprehensive reports for users. The company says that Perplexity Labs is like “having a team” that can bring projects from ideation to reality. The platform creates reports, spreadsheets, dashboards and simple web apps. It can perform at least 10 minutes of self-supervised work, uses web browsing, writes and executes code to handle tasks like organizing data or applying formulas, and can create charts and images. “In some respects, this is a continuation of Perplexity’s original capabilities as an AI-driven search engine that provides deeper answers,” said Hyoun Park, CEO and chief analyst at Amalgam Insights. Indeed, Perplexity explained that Labs was designed to handle more complex assignments than Deep Research. “While Deep Research remains the fastest way to obtain comprehensive answers to in-depth questions —  typically within 3 or 4 minutes — Labs is designed to invest more time (10  minutes or longer) and leverage additional tools, such as advanced file generation and mini-app creation,” Perplexity wrote in a blog post. “This expanded capability empowers you to develop a broader array of deliverables for your projects.” With its longer research workflow, Perplexity Labs can generate spreadsheets, visual representations, and high-quality reports, the company said. It iteratively searches through hundreds of sources, reasons about that data, and refines its approach as it gets deeper into a project, similar to the way in which a human researcher might approach a new area of study. To create interactive dashboards without the need for coding expertise or external development tools like Ploty and Dash, users just describe what they’re visualizing in natural language, and Labs will generate it in real-time. Dashboards could, for instance, visualize business finances or other complex datasets, incorporating clickable elements to allow non-technical users to quickly act on insights. In one example from the blog, Perplexity prompted Labs from the position of a leader at a tech consulting firm looking to create a potential customer list. It specified that it wanted to partner with US B2B companies in seed, series A, or series B stages, and asked Labs to list 20 relevant companies and include key details including contact information. Labs compiled a comprehensive dataset of potential customers, organizing them by stage (A, B, or seed) and identified their core focus, intended customers, and funding to date. The platform cited links from Forbes, YCombinator, and Exploding Topics that it had used as sources. When further prompted, it crafted introductory emails to the CEOs of the series A startups. To simplify workflows, Labs arranges generated files in a dedicated tab for easy access, supports integration with other tools such as Google Sheets, and allows users to pull out and format citations to bring credibility to its research. Finished materials can be exported as PDFs or documents, or converted into a shareable Perplexity Page. Pro subscribers ($20 a month) can now work with Labs on Web, iOS, and Android; Mac and Windows apps are coming soon. A good fit for enterprise users? This new capability joins an increasingly competitive space, as users look for AI productivity tools that are ever-more performant and can handle more and more tasks autonomously. Park pointed out that Perplexity Labs is a response to tools and models such as OpenAI o1-pro (launched in March), Claude Opus 4 (released in May), and Google’s recent Flow and Firebase announcements. “There is a massive Hunger Games in the AI world right now,” said Park. “Every major vendor is ferociously trying to one-up each other in providing more functionality, either in a native model or with an agency of AI agents designed to work together and create digital assets such as documents, apps, and videos.” However, Perplexity Labs does provide differentiation from other providers in the market, Info-Tech’s Randall noted. In particular, Perplexity is betting that users will prefer a “low-cost, open, tool-agnostic sandbox” for web crawling, code execution, and the creation of finished artifacts including mini web apps. “These capabilities cannot yet be found in other enterprise platforms, such as Microsoft or Google offerings,” said Randall. But enterprises should approach Perplexity Labs with a governance-first mindset, he emphasized. Assets live in Perplexity’s cloud and, for now, lack the private data grounding and compliance controls that CIOs expect, and that they find in tools such as Microsoft Copilot or Google Gemini. From an enterprise perspective, Park noted, the biggest challenge is that every asset-creating model and agent is “still opaque” when it comes to understanding the assumptions, training, and reliability of assumptions used to create a document or app. He compared it to the way the iPhone bypassed BlackBerry and Windows through “sheer consumer delight.” “At some point, AI vendors seeking serious business usage will need to provide more transparency and governance tools to the business world, just as mobile device management and mobile security solutions eventually came to the iPhone,” said Park. Otherwise, businesses may be compelled to build their own clunky but secure versions of Perplexity Labs, “which are guaranteed to be less accurate and useful just [based on] the history of business apps trying to imitate viral consumer apps,” he said.

All I know is that pizza heals and bullets kill, and that the Time Reapers — nasty little buggers that seem to be invading every timeline — don’t want this pizza shop owner to make any dough. And that’s not gonna fly. Pizza Bandit’s writing is pretty silly, but that’s part of the charm.“What makes Pizza Bandit unique is that you’re not just shooting stuff. You’re also, well, kinda playing Overcooked. After squading up, my first mission saw my crew (you can play with up to three friends) heading to the Restaurant from N owhere, a hidden outpost run by another bandit crew. Our job: fulfill the pizza orders for other bounty hunting teams, and send them off in time-traveling rocket pods. That meant putting together the right type of pizza, getting it to the oven, making sure we were getting their drink orders right, and adding some extra bullets for when things got spicy, cramming it all into a pod, and doing it on time while fighting off the Time Reapers, who really, really don’t like supporting small businesses.Pizza Bandit ScreenshotsAnd that’s where the other part of the Overcooked/Gears of War marriage comes into play. See, the Time Reapers mean business, and you’re not going to talk them out of some time reaping. That’s their whole bag. The only solution, fellow bandit, is incredible violence. I’ve played several builds of Pizza Bandit at this point, and let me tell you, your arsenal is up to the task. You start with your choice of assau lt rifle, minigun, and sniper rifle, but the fun really begins when you start unlocking your secondary weapons by completing jobs. They start simple: landmines, grenades, that sort of thing, but once you unlock the disco ball that attracts enemies and gets them dancing before it explodes? Whew, buddy. And the sentry turret? Perfection. You could slice and dice them Time Reapers with a katana, but have you ever considered using a pizza slicer as big as a man? It’ll change your life.And the Time Reapers will force you to use everything in your arsenal. You got your standard guys who will just run at you, but there are also Time Reapers that’ll crawl around on all fours, Terminator-looking ones that will leap at you, giant ones with hammers, guys who throw fireballs (these can really ruin your day), the works. You gotta prioritize.Pizza Bandit is at its best when you’re with a good team, calling out orders. A good match should be shouts of “We need a pepperoni pie!” and “I’m on the Coke!” and “I’m down!” interspersed with lots and lots of gunfire. Simple choices, like when to call down your own, once-a-mission rocket pod full of pizza and supplies, and more complex ones, like where to put it (you can block off a stairway, for instance), spice things up, too. And here’s the thing: so far, I’ve just talked about Restaurant from Nowhere, which is only the first level. Pizza Bandit isn’t a one-trick pony. One of my favorite levels has you taking over a sushi joint and making sure you have the right stuff on the delivery turntable for your customers. Sometimes that means running downstairs and grabbing a big ol’ tuna, taking that bad boy upstairs, and chopping him up before the Time Reapers whack you and you drop him. Other times that means frying an egg, or making a cucumber roll. You gotta stay ahead of the curve, because new customers are prioritized over old ones, and the Time Reapers aren’t gonna sit there and wait for you to plate your masterpiece.Sometimes, you’re not even cooking food at all. Another favorite level, Wizard’s Tomb, has you exploring a magically booby-trapped tomb in search of a sarcophagus. You’ll have to navigate the tomb’s traps, solve basic puzzles to reveal the way forward, and take out the arcane heart powering the whole enterprise before getting to the sarcophagus itself, which you’ll naturally transport with jetpacks before booking it back to your ship. It isn’t enough to get any given job done; you gotta get home, too. Just another day in the life of a pizza bandit.Pizza Bandit is always ludicrous, and its inspirations are obvious, but it’s never less than fun.“There are more, of course: in one, you’ll defend a cabin with Dr. Emmert Browne (Great Scott, Jofsoft, I see what you’re doing here, and I like it!) while he invents the time travel device that makes your whole business profitable. Winning it all means keeping him warm, satiating his hunger with rabbit or venison, and stopping all those nasty Time Reapers (and Wendigos?) who are trying to stop time travel from happening. You’d think that the Time Reapers would understand time paradoxes, but I guess not. Can’t reap time if there’s no time to reap, y’all. Or maybe you’ll break into an enormous safe with a laser drill, like you’re roleplaying the opening scene of Michael Mann’s Thief with a drill that’s constantly exploding. That seems safe, right? But hey, apparently there’s a magical cookbook in that vault whose recipes can alter reality, and we’re being paid to get it, exploding drill or not. A Pizza Bandit always gets the job done. And there’s always time to do your best Breaking Bad impersonation and help a couple of guys cook some “magic powder” and hide it inside some chicken. Oh, and you have to kill and cook the chickens. Only fresh, never frozen, baby. Pizza Bandit is always ludicrous, and its inspirations are obvious, but it’s never less than fun.Between missions, it’s back to Pizza Bandit (your restaurant), where you can acquire and upgrade your weapons, decorate Pizza Bandit itself, use the ingredients you find during missions to bake and share a pie for some stat boosts on your next run, or get some spiffy new duds for your bounty hunter. The milk carton backpack is a classic choice, if I do say so myself, but I’m still saving up for one of the cat ones. The things we do for fashion, am I right? Then it’s right back to it. A bandit’s work is never done.Sometimes, you don’t know you want something until you get it. I didn’t know I wanted Pizza Bandit until the first time I played it at PAX two years ago. It was one of those games that generated a lot of word of mouth, but it’s one of those concepts that doesn’t seem like it’ll work until you get a controller in your hands and everything makes sense. I don’t know why we’ve never gotten something like Pizza Bandit before, but once I played it, I knew I wanted more. Pizza heals, bullets kill, and Pizza Bandit rocks. If Jofsoft can stick the landing, we’re in for a tasty slice of New York pie.

Warning: contains spoilers for Doctor Who series 15 episode 7 “Wish World” Well, why not? Doctor Who’s previous series finale “Empire of Death” brought back a creepy mask-wearing villain from the classic era, so where’s the harm in making it two on the trot? In the final moments of series 15’s penultimate episode “Wish World”, villainous Time Lady The Rani shared her master plan with the Doctor. First in the form of Anita Dobson’s Mrs Flood and now bi-generated to include Archie Panjabi’s leather-clad baddie, The Rani has been following the Doctor around so that she could trap him in a fantasy world and then use the power of his doubt to tear that world apart, look under the universe’s carpet, and free somebody trapped in “the Underverse”.     Which somebody? Omega, who, according to Conrad Clark’s potted bio is “The first Time Lord. The creator of the Time Lords. The greatest and most terrifying Time Lord of all.” Well, that depends how great and terrifying you find pointy gold masks bearing the face of Grumpy Cat, H.R. Geiger-style tubey guys with skeletal chicken sidekicks, or Peter Davison’s face covered in green pork scratchings. Omega has previously appeared in the form of all three in Doctor Who, first in 10th anniversary special “The Three Doctors”, then a decade later in Fifth Doctor serial “Arc of Infinity”. (There’s also a blink-and-you’ll-miss-him uncredited and dialogue-free appearance in the Gallifreyan flashback around 28 minutes in to “The Timeless Children” but we only know about that one from a stage direction on the script.) So, who is Omega and what is his deal? He’s a Gallifreyan who, ages ago, harnessed the power of an exploding supernova to give his people the power to travel through time, hence “The first Time Lord. The Creator of the Time Lords.” Only, the experiment went south when some gubbins involving a black hole caused him to become trapped in an anti-matter universe, after which the Time Lords mistook him for dead. In TV show continuity, we first met Omega in multi-Doctor story “The Three Doctors” when he tried to take his revenge on the Time Lords for having, as he saw it, abandoned him. Using some 1970s special FX and red bubble wrap monsters, Omega created a trap to send the Third Doctor from Earth through space to his anti-matter universe, where he intended to swap places with him and escape. It almost worked, but it turned out that all that time living in the irradiated anti-matter universe had destroyed Omega’s physical form, leaving only his will inside his imposing metallic armour. Then some gubbins about the second Doctor’s recorder (yes, keep up) destroyed the anti-matter universe, the Doctor(s) escaped, and Omega was once again thought dead. But, surprise! In season 20 serial “Arc of Infinity”, it turns out that Omega had survived and was colluding with a member of the Gallifreyan High Council to biologically bond what was left of him to the Fifth Doctor so that he could regain corporeality. And it worked! For a bit, anyway, allowing Omega in the form of Peter Davison to do some sightseeing in Amsterdam, until some gubbins about the failed bio-bond meant that he turned green and bumpy. The Doctor then used an antimatter converter on him to send him back to his old universe, where, on TV at least, he’s been ever since. Until now. In “Wish World”, we heard a disembodied voice (that may or may not have been a recording of original but now-departed Omega actor Stephen Thorne) declaring: “Long live Omega! Omega shall be free!” That’s The Rani’s plan anyway. She’s organising a kind of Time Lord/Lady reunion for herself, the Doctor and Omega, which will presumably play out in series 15 finale “The Reality War.” Will Omega be matter or anti-matter, corporeal or empty suit of armour, and will he still hold a grudge against the Doctor for all that Amsterdam business?
