The best selling PS5 game: Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: 11 million Looking back at the entire video game console timeline lets us get a clear picture of how the industry has evolved. It is fun to rank the best consoles of all time and look at things like the best Nintendo launch games to remember what we were playing when we first got our hands on those new systems. Those kinds of subjective lists are fun, but there are some equally interesting objective things to explore as well. Game sales don’t necessarily represent the best games of all time, but do show what was most popular at the time for one reason or another. There’s typically a disconnect between what sells the best and what is the highest rated, which is fun to see. This isn’t the kind of thing most people know off the top of their head, so we dug through all the financial reports for as far back as we could to find the best selling games on every video game console. Note: We are only covering the major home and handheld consoles and leaving out the more niche systems that few people owned or remember. We are also only able to account for officially released sales data. It is possible some of these numbers have changed or are in the wrong order, but as of 2025, it is as up-to-date as possible based on the latest official data. Recommended Videos Giovanni Colantonio / Digital Trends The early consoles were mainly a way to play the best arcade games at home, so it makes sense that Pac-Man would be the top seller for the Atari 2600. What is a little surprising, though, is just how many copies this game sold in the end. Despite how niche video games were in the early 80s, Pac-Man on the Atari 2600 sold over 8 million copies. Space Invaders comes in at a distant second place with just over 6 million with Donkey Kong rounding out the top three with a little over 4 million. Related Nintendo We have to put a small asterisk on this entry because, despite being one of the best Mario games and certainly would’ve sold millions on its own, Super Mario Bros. was a pack-in game with the NES. That game was probably why most people bought the console, but we will never know for sure how many copies the game would have sold if it hadn’t been included with the system. However, bundle or not, the sales figure of over 40 million copies is nothing to sneeze at. Even Duck Hunt and Super Mario Bros. 3, which were also included in bundles, only sold 28 million and 18 million copies, respectively. If you don’t count bundles, the top selling NES game would then fall to Tetris with 8 million copies sold. Sega Just like Nintendo’s main mascot topped the charts for the NES, Sega’s own Sonic was easily the best selling Genesis game with 15 million sales. However, we have to put the same asterisk on Sonic as we did with Mario because it, too, was bundled with the console. If we look at second place, it is none other than Sonic the Hedgehog 2 with around 7.5 million copies. These are great numbers, but really goes to show just how dominant Nintendo was at the time over Sega. Adobe Stock / Digital Trends What else could be the best selling Game Boy game than the franchise that took over the world and hasn’t let go? The monster-catching games rocketed the franchise into the stratosphere and gave the handheld a second life almost 10 years after it first game out. Some might think it is a little unfair to bundle the sale of both games together, but that’s how Nintendo has always done it. Besides, the second best selling game is Tetris, but that was a pack-in game, and third place is Pokémon Gold and Silver with 23.7 million, so you have to go pretty far down the list to not have any kind of asterisk. Nintendo Act surprised, but another Mario game is at the top of the list. Again, we have to put a disclaimer on this game’s huge sales milestone for being part of a bundle with the console. Just like with the NES, though, Super Mario World is one of the best SNES games made and would likely have sold about as well regardless. If you want to find the next best selling game that isn’t a bundle, we have to go all the way to ninth place, where we get Street Fighter II Turbo at 4.1 million copies sold. Sony This was a very close race between first, second, and third place, but the first entry in Sony’s own racing game franchise squeaks out the win at 10.85 million copies. Besides just being a great game, Gran Turismo was, and still is, always a graphical showpiece for Sony consoles that draws a huge crowd just to show off what the system can do. Nipping at its heels in second place is Final Fantasy 7 at 10.02 million, followed by Gran Turismo 2 at 9.37 million. Taylor Frint/Digital Trends Graphic / Nintendo Stop us if you’ve heard this one before, but a Mario game was the best selling game on a Nintendo system. Shocking, we know, but this is yet again a pack-in situation. In fact, first through fourth place all have that asterisk attached, including Mario Kart 64, GoldenEye 007, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Fifth place, however, is Super Smash Bros. with no asterisk at a respectable 5.55 million. While there were tons of great N64 games, this console didn’t sell as well as Nintendo’s others so these are still great numbers considering the install base. Sega It almost isn’t worth it to include the Dreamcast on this list, but we wanted to acknowledge its loyal fans and that it did have some great games. Sadly, not even Sonic could save this system and its premier 3D adventure only managed to sell 2.5 million copies. Soulcalibur was second best with >1.3 million, and Shenmue took third with 1.2 million. Just like Mario will keep showing up at the top of home console sales, Pokémon remains the king of the handheld market. Ruby and Sapphire make perfect sense, but second place belongs to Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, remakes of the first generation games with 12 million copies sold. It’s a little surprising how few copies the best PS2 games sold considering it itself is the best selling console. Don’t get us wrong, Grand Theft Auto: San AndreasGran Turismo 3: A-Spec gets the silver medal with 14.89 million, and GTA: Vice City holds bronze with 14.2 million. Micorosft Microsoft’s first console attempt went way better than expected, and that was largely due to launching with a Halo game. The sequel, Halo 2, was one of the most heavily marketed games at the time and revolutionized online play, allowing it to put the original Halo in second place at 6 million. The drop off to third place is huge, with Fable selling a still impressive 3 million copies. Nintendo Sadly, Nintendo’s grip on the console market continued to slip with the GameCube, but Super Smash Bros. Melee played a big part in keeping the system relevant at parties and in competitive scenes. It is also the first system where Mario was shoved to third place, though only technically, since Mario Kart: Double Dash is second with 6.88 million, and then Mario Sunshine comes in with 5.91 million. Photo by Dids from Pexels / Nintendo Meanwhile, the handheld side of things continues to print money and, in a rare twist, sees Mario on top and Pokémon way down at number five. 30.80 million are numbers Nintendo hand’t seen since the original Game Boy, followed by Nintendogs next with 23.96 million and Mario Kart DS only just losing out with 23.60 million. Xbox Be honest, did you see this one coming? You probably would have guessed Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, Skyrim, or one of the other common best Xbox 360 games would be the best seller, but no, 24 million people purchased Kinect Adventures! That sounds even crazier when you see that it sold more than GTA VMinecraft at 22 million. Photo by Nikita Kostrykin on Unsplash This probably looks more like what you were expecting. GTA 5 absolutely crushes all other PS3 games in terms of sales by a huge margin, as one would think. Even Gran Turismo 5 in second place only sold 11.95 million copies, and Uncharted 3 in third at ~9 million. Despite its rough launch, the PS3 did end the generation with a lot of big sellers, but nothing compared to GTA. Nintendo loves to bundle games with its hardware, and no example is more famous than the Wii and Wii Sports. This pack-in game was the only game a huge number of people ever got for the system, which explains its astronomical sales. Mario Kart Wii, which was also a bundle, is second at 37/38 million, and Wii Sports Resort at third with 33.14 million. The first non-bundled game is fifth place’s Wii Play at 28.02 million, which still blows away most other consoles’ best sellers. Nintendo This would be a tough one to talk about if Nintendo didn’t manage one of the greatest turnarounds in video game history right after. 8.46 million copies for a Mario Kart game is abysmal, and this was also a bundle game. In fact, the top nine Wii U games were all part of a bundle at one time or another. The first game you can say sold the most without an asterisk is Mario Party 10 at just 2.27 million copies. Of course, many of these games would end up selling way better when ported to a future system. Sony This is the generation PlayStation really blasted ahead of the competition. Marvel’s Spider-Man was the perfect storm of a massive IP and a perfect development team to hit 22.68 million sales, but it wasn’t a complete blowout. God of War was almost the winner with 21.02 million sales, and GTA 5 somehow managed to sell almost as many copies on the PS4 as PS3 with 20 million. We don’t need to remind anyone how dismal the Xbox One generation was, but seeing PUBG: Battlegrounds as the top seller says it all. No offense to that game, but it selling more than Black Ops III at 7.37 million copies and COD: WWII at 6.23 million shows how small the audience was on this system. Nintendo If you didn’t think the platform could make a big difference, here’s your proof. Despite being an upgraded port of the Wii U game, Mario Kart 8: Deluxe sold more copies on the Switch than the total number of Wii U consoles. And these numbers don’t get any less crazy when you look at Animal Crossing: New Horizons selling 47.82 million, or Super Smash Bros. Ultimate selling 36.81 million. In fact, you have to go to the 22 best selling game on the Switch before sales drop below 10 million. Xbox Microsoft Sadly, there is no official data available for what the best selling Xbox Series X/S game is. Microsoft has stopped reporting a lot of its sales data for hardware and software units in favor of players and engagement, making it impossible to know for sure how many copies of games have actually sold. Sony We’re still in the midst of the PS5 generation, so these numbers are likely to shift, but there’s no doubt that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is the clear game to beat with 11 million copies. Second place is a surprise hit: Black Myth: Wukong selling 5 million copies, and then an old familiar franchise taking third place in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, selling 3.97 million copies to date. We’ll keep an eye on this list as things evolve and more sales data comes out.

However many Final Fantasy Magic: The Gathering cards they release, it’ll never be enough I wonder how the people behind the aggressively-mid FF Trading Card Game from Square Enix must be feeling. Image credit: VG247 Article by Alex Donaldson Assistant Editor Published on May 14, 2025 I can seldom think of a transmedia cross-over more appropriate than the emergence of Magic: The Gathering X Final Fantasy, an imminent expansion to the beloved card collecting and battling tabletop title that brings the worlds of Final Fantasy into Magic’s mechanics. Fans are still eagerly waiting to get their hands on the sets, but over the course of the last several days Wizards of the Coast has steadily begun revealing more and more of the contents of the expansion. This is all a hearty promotional exercise, but it practically isn’t needed: so eager are the fans and so perfect is this cross-over conceptually that FF is already the best-selling Magic set in history. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Nevertheless, people are thrilled to see the cards that’ll be emerging from booster packs in June - learning in turn which characters, locations, and classic FF iconography will make the cut. Seeing this, and myself being one of the people excitingly tabbing through reveals despite already having pre-orders running into the hundreds in place, I’ve realized one thing: no matter how many cards this set encompasses, it’ll never be enough. Wizards of the Coast has opened a proverbial Pandora's Box. Final Fantasy is rich, wide, and its predilection for throwing everything out and starting over for each numbered entry means that it is far too deep to be summarized in just a few hundred cards. Already, I can see the discourse shifting among fans. Some hope for more cards from 12, or from the less immediately iconic NES classics. People with love and light in their hearts hope Final Fantasy 9 is particularly well-represented. A curious paradigm has emerged in the nature of the FF expansion, which is simply put that there are four games that are particularly well-represented. Final Fantasies 6, 7, 10, and 14 are all featured as the games driving the four ‘Commander Decks’ that make up a major component of the release. Commander is a unique MTG format that supports larger decks, and has formed a major part of most spin-off ‘universes beyond’ sets so far. But for FF, these four decks end up feeling strangely insufficient. Suteki da ne? | Image credit: Wizards of the Coast With Fallout, for instance, four commander decks did indeed feel sufficient. Two decks channeled Fallout 4 and Fallout 3, offering different gameplay styles that evoked the themes of each game. A third was all about New Vegas, and the final set revered the original two CRPGs. Broadly speaking, the whole series was represented. Wizards of the Coast has obviously chosen carefully for FF. You have the most beloved 2D FF, the most important 3D FF, and the on-going concern MMO with a huge fanbase. And 10, which is wildly beloved. I respect it - but I also begrudgingly look at this release slate and conclude Wizards of the Coast is going to leave this expansion with unfinished business as far as Final Fantasy goes. While every other FF is represented in the general boosters and the general set of cards, the sprawling nature of Commander Decks means that the four FFs that have a Commander Deck themed around them naturally have a huge advantage - their characters, stories, and worlds are far more heavily represented than the others. This is such a fabulous synergistic fit, the card art and game design so carefully and wonderfully crafted, that fans can’t resist. This is clearly no cash-in, it’s a damn good product. People want more good stuff! Who knew? But the door is now open - people are going to want more of this. Rabid FF fans are going to want more of this. These people won’t be satisfied with this one expansion. Certainly, if you consider raising the representation level across the numbered series and fold in a few spin-offs, there is ample scope for a second FF expansion. And with this first drop already set to be its best-ever selling expansion pack, WOTC should be well-minded to deliver that, in time. For now, I await my pre-order and further card reveals, praying for better FF9 representation than we’ve seen so far, and also hoping that the generally maligned 13 and 15 don’t get completely shafted. And I wonder how the people behind the aggressively-mid FF Trading Card Game from Square Enix must be feeling. Those poor guys.

NASA/JPL-CaltechEarth’s geology is downright vital. Here, giant “plates” of the crust rift apart and smash together like pieces of an ever changing planetary jigsaw puzzle. Mountains rise, volcanoes spew, and Earth itself quakes as the crust constantly remakes itself in the ceaseless cycle of plate tectonics. This is a process that controls the flow of carbon through our planet and stabilizes its climate; were it not for plate tectonics, Earth might not be habitable at all.No other rocky world in our solar system has anything approaching Earth’s degree of geological activity. At least, that’s what scientists used to think. Mercury, Mars and the moon appear essentially inert. But Venus, our closest neighbor and the only other large rocky world around the sun, is now starting to look far livelier than once thought. A fresh look at decades-old data from NASA’s Magellan probe has found evidence of active tectonics—around dozens of circular volcanic features called coronae—on Venus today. The finding, published on Wednesday in Science Advances, provides some of the best evidence to date that Venus isn’t dead—at least, not when it comes to tectonics.“Venus works differently than the Earth but not as different as what was originally assumed,” says the study’s co-lead author Anna Gülcher of the University of Bern in Switzerland. “We should think of tectonics as not just a black-and-white picture.”On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. This new evidence of geological activity around the coronae suggests “the heart of Venus still beats today. I think that’s extremely invaluable for us to understand the big, rocky world next door.”Venus is called “Earth’s evil twin” for good reason: the planet is almost exactly as large as the Earth and is made of roughly the same stuff. But while Earth is a verdant water world, Venus is a scorched hellscape with temperatures hot enough to melt lead, a dreary, permanently overcast sky and air so thick that it crushes spacecraft as if they were tin cans.For a while, Venus was widely assumed to be just as dead on the inside as it is on the outside. Lacking any obvious plate tectonics—which can help release a world’s internal heat—Venus’s interior was thought to instead just simmer like the contents of a tight-lidded pot on a stove. According to one popular hypothesis, the pot had eventually boiled over: after eons of frustrated heating, some 800 million years ago, the planet’s outer shell buckled, and Venus’s entire surface was paved over with immense outpourings of fresh lava. And, the thinking went, with all that heat dissipated, the planet’s geology basically shut down.But evidence is mounting that Venus is, geologically at least, still kicking. Most notably, in 2023 two researchers scrutinizing 30-year-old Magellan data realized that the probe had caught a volcanic eruption in the act: radar images of the volcano Maat Mons that were taken months apart showed what looked like a caldera collapse and subsequent lava flow. Venus, it seems, still has active volcanoes. Some researchers now think it could have active tectonics, too. And in 2020 Gülcher and her colleagues showed via simulations of Venusian tectonics that the planet’s mysterious, ring-shaped coronae could be a good place to look for such activity.Tectonics refers to the processes that deform a rocky planet’s brittle outer shell. On Earth, this outer shell—the lithosphere, which includes the crust and part of the upper mantle—is broken into tectonic plates that drift over the hot, plastic mantle. When two plates collide, one of them can slide below the other and dive down into the mantle in a process called subduction. On Earth, subducting plates start melting as they sink, feeding volcanoes along plate boundaries. Such volcanoes include Japan’s Mount Fuji and western North America’s Cascade Range.Unlike Earth, Venus doesn’t have global plate tectonics. The new study suggests, however, that around coronae, something quite similar to subduction could be happening.Gülcher and her colleagues simulated several tectonic processes that might be occurring around coronae and compared their predictions to real observations collected by the Magellan probe 30 years ago. The comparisons were more than skin-deep: the researchers used gravity data to take a peek underground. Hot rock is generally less dense than cold rock, and these density variations from place to place can correspondingly alter the strength of a planet’s gravitational field. So Magellan’s spatial mapping of Venus’s gravity can “see” if there’s hot, light material under a corona—a sign that rock is actively rising up from the mantle below.Of the 75 coronae that the team could resolve in Magellan’s gravitational maps, 52 seem to be geologically active. The predicted and real data lined up so well for some coronae that “we could hardly believe our eyes,” says the study’s other co-lead author Gael Cascioli of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Most of the active coronae were encircled by trenches, a hint that old crust dives into Venus’s mantle around these rocky rings, where it is driven downward as buoyant rock rises from below in the middle of each corona’s ring structure. “Basically, if something goes down, something goes up,” Gülcher says. Where the lithosphere is softer and more pliable, bits of it could break off and “drip” down into the mantle in globs. In places where the lithosphere is stiffer, entire slabs of crust could subduct in a small-scale, circular mirror of Earth’s subduction zones, like those that form the Pacific Ocean’s famed volcanic Ring of Fire.Working with 30-year-old data comes with an obvious limitation: the data quality often isn’t very good compared with newer observations. The new study’s researchers did well with what they had, Byrne says. But NASA’s upcoming VERITAS (Venus Emissivity, Radio Science, InSAR, Topography, and Spectroscopy) mission could do much better—and the team predicted exactly how much better in the paper. “The improvement would be extraordinary,” Cascioli says. Instead of being limited to analyzing 75 coronae, VERITAS’s gravity dataset should allow scientists to examine hundreds of the strange ring-shaped features.For the foreseeable future, Venus is the only other large, rocky world that we or our robotic emissaries will ever reach. Understanding why Earth and Venus ended up so different despite having so much in common helps us understand our own planet—and whether the rocky worlds we’re beginning to glimpse around other stars are more like Earth or instead resemble its evil twin.“Venus is the world that we probably understand least,” Byrne says. “Yet it’s the one, arguably, I think, that’s the most important.”

It feels like the Tony Gilroy-created Andor Star WarsAndor season 2 would tie directly with the start of Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Though we all know how that tragic tale goes, the fact that a number of Andor’s major players are nowhere to be seen in the 2016 war epic had us worrying about their fates. After the shocking death of Kyle Soller’s Syril Karn during the Ghorman Massacre of episode 8, the final arc of episodes quickly whittled down the Andor cast to make room for the Rogue One crew. The inclusion of Ben Mendelsohn’s Orson Krennic, Forest Whitaker’s Saw Gerrera, and Diego Luna’s titular Cassian AndorRogue One, the same couldn’t be said for Stellan Skarsgård’s Luthen Rael and Anton Lesser’s Lio Partagaz. However, it’s arguably Andor’s greatest villain who gets a fate worse than death.  Denise Gough’s Dedra Meero seemed like the perfect little Imperial drone after being raised in an Imperial Kinder-block and being molded into a high-ranking supervisor in the Imperial Security Bureau (ISB). Unfortunately, this put her on a collision course with Krennic, who’s never been afraid to show he’s only looking out for himself. Things started to unravel in Andor episode 10, and after having dispatched ISB mole Lonni Jung (Robert Emms), Luthen set about erasing his existence as the Rebel spy known as Axis. It was too late for Luthen, but when Dedra arrived at his antiquities shop to confront him, things didn’t go the way she’d planned. It’s here that Dedra unveiled the Imperial N-S9 Starpath Unit that had put her on Luthen’s trail four years earlier. It’s her obsession with Axis that brings her here, and just like Syril’s vendetta against Cassian Andor sealed his fate just a few episodes earlier, she’s the architect of her own downfall. Luthen was never going to go quietly, but having achieved his goal of spreading the rebellion across the galaxy, he tries to take his life by stabbing himself with a Nautolan bleeder. Although he survives his injuries, the fact that a smug Dedra thought she could take him in and claim the glory for himself by making an unsanctioned arrest attempt without backup has riled Krennic. Things only got worse when Krennic learns Lonni had accessed Meero’s files regarding the Death Star, and although she bats off his (incorrect) assumption that she’s a Rebel spy, the catalogue of errors sees her sent to one of the Narkina moons where Cassian was locked up in season 1.  Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Gilroy expanded on how Meero served as an unwilling way for the Rebels to access the information on the Death Star, which ultimately catapults the story into Rogue One. “The whole ISB is coming to an end. If you think about it, if that was the CIA or any intelligence bureau,” mused Gilroy. “With those kinds of breaches and that kind of disaster happening simultaneously, it would be a cleaning of house. So she’s definitely going to go down.” Speaking to TV Line, Gough described how she was “so happy” for the audience for Dedra to end up where she is. Discussing how she’s left locked up in an Imperial prison, Gough cheered: “It’s so gratifying” to see Dedra’s location because we know what goes on in Narkina 5. Saying it’s “a perfect little button at the end of this season. You can’t have a character like that just get away with [the things she did].” As for the idea that Dedra could’ve gone the way of so many other iconic Star Wars villains, she concluded, “I’m glad she wasn’t killed. I’m really glad that we get to see her in that uniform, in that Narkina 5 [cell].” Soller similarly reflected on Dedra’s indefinite incarceration, saying how it’s poignant to see “someone who’s been so about control being put into the ultimate controlled space.” Star Wars has a habit of killing off its villains, with everyone from Emperor Palpatine (twice) to Count Dooku getting their comeuppance. Darth Maul (twice) and Jabba the Hutt all met their makers, while Grand Admiral Thrawn faced a similarly dismal fate to Dedra when he was marooned in space – although he returned in Ahsoka to presumably be killed further down the line. Just like how Syril, Partagaz, and eventually Krennic were chewed up and spat out by the system, Dedra’s fate was written in the stars as the Emperor put his plans for the Death Star into play. Even though the repeated imagery of Meero feeling choked after she was assaulted back in the season 1 finale had some believing we’d get a last-minute cameo from Darth Vader to kill her off with one of his iconic Force chokes, she gets a much better send-off.  Knowing that Dedra is presumably forced to help finish the Death Star or construct the second Death Star when the first is destroyed is equally ironic. It’s a tragic arc akin to Cassian helping build the weapon that will kill him in Rogue One, but more than this, Dedra will likely never know what happens to the ISB or the Empire. Taking Andor and Rogue One as a complete story, the high body count leaves a handful of characters like Dedra, Bix (Adria Arjona), Kleya (Elizabeth Dulau), and Vel (Faye Marsay) alive when Rogue One’s credits roll. Whereas the others get something of a happy ending, Dedra’s is far from it.  While leaving Dedra on one of the Narkina moons leaves the door open for her to return further down the line, there’s no need to. As machine learning systems become integral to various applications, from recommendation engines to autonomous systems, there’s a growing need to address their environmental sustainability. These systems require extensive computational resources, often running on custom-designed hardware accelerators. Their energy demands are substantial during training and inference phases, contributing to operational carbon emissions. Also, the hardware that powers these models carries its environmental burden, called embodied carbon, from manufacturing, materials, and life-cycle operations. Addressing these dual carbon sources is essential for reducing the ecological impact of machine learning technologies, especially as global adoption continues to accelerate across industries and use cases. Despite increasing awareness, current strategies for mitigating the carbon impact of machine learning systems remain fragmented. Most methods focus on operational efficiency, reducing energy consumption during training and inference, or improving hardware utilization. However, few approaches consider both sides of the equation: the carbon emitted during hardware operation and that embedded in the hardware’s design and manufacturing process. This split perspective overlooks how decisions made at the model design stage influence hardware efficiency and vice versa. Multi-modal models, which integrate visual and textual data, exacerbate this issue due to their inherently complex and heterogeneous computing requirements. Several techniques currently employed to enhance AI model efficiency, including pruning and distillation, aim to maintain accuracy while decreasing inference time or energy use. Hardware-aware neural architecture search (NAS) methods further explore architectural variants to fine-tune performance, typically favoring latency or energy minimization. Despite their sophistication, these methods often fail to account for embodied carbon, the emissions tied to the physical hardware’s construction and lifetime. Frameworks such as ACT, IMEC.netzero, and LLMCarbon have recently started modeling embodied carbon independently, but they lack the integration necessary for holistic optimization. Similarly, adaptations of CLIP for edge use cases, including TinyCLIP and ViT-based models, prioritize deployment feasibility and speed, overlooking total carbon output. These approaches provide partial solutions that are effective within their scope but insufficient for meaningful environmental mitigation. Researchers from FAIR at Meta and Georgia Institute of Technology developed CATransformers, a framework that introduces carbon as a primary design consideration. This innovation allows researchers to co-optimize model architectures and hardware accelerators by jointly evaluating their performance against carbon metrics. The solution targets devices for edge inference, where both embodied and operational emissions must be controlled due to hardware constraints. Unlike traditional methods, CATransformers enables early design space exploration using a multi-objective Bayesian optimization engine that evaluates trade-offs among latency, energy consumption, accuracy, and total carbon footprint. This dual consideration enables model configurations that reduce emissions without sacrificing the quality or responsiveness of the models, offering a meaningful step toward sustainable AI systems. The core functionality of CATransformers lies in its three-module architecture:  A multi-objective optimizer An ML model evaluator A hardware estimator The model evaluator generates model variants by pruning a large base CLIP model, altering dimensions such as the number of layers, feedforward network size, attention heads, and embedding width. These pruned versions are then passed to the hardware estimator, which uses profiling tools to estimate each configuration’s latency, energy usage, and total carbon emissions. The optimizer then selects the best-performing setups by balancing all metrics. This structure allows rapid evaluation of the interdependencies between model design and hardware deployment, offering precise insight into how architectural choices affect total emissions and performance outcomes. The practical output of CATransformers is the CarbonCLIP family of models, which delivers substantial gains over existing small-scale CLIP baselines. CarbonCLIP-S achieves the same accuracy as TinyCLIP-39M but reduces total carbon emissions by 17% and maintains latency under 15 milliseconds. CarbonCLIP-XS, a more compact version, offers 8% better accuracy than TinyCLIP-8M while reducing emissions by 3% and ensuring latency remains below 10 milliseconds. Notably, when comparing configurations optimized solely for latency, the hardware requirements often doubled, leading to significantly higher embodied carbon. In contrast, configurations optimized for carbon and latency achieved a 19-20% reduction in total emissions with minimal latency trade-offs. These findings underscore the importance of integrated carbon-aware design. Several Key Takeaways from the Research on CATransformers include: CATransformers introduces carbon-aware co-optimization for machine learning systems by evaluating operational and embodied carbon emissions. The framework applies multi-objective Bayesian optimization, integrating accuracy, latency, energy, and carbon footprint into the search process. A family of CLIP-based models, CarbonCLIP-S and CarbonCLIP-XS, was developed using this method. CarbonCLIP-S achieves a 17% reduction in emissions compared to TinyCLIP-39M, with similar accuracy and <15 ms latency. CarbonCLIP-XS offers 8% improved accuracy over TinyCLIP-8M while reducing carbon by 3% and achieving <10 ms latency. Designs optimized only for latency led to an increase of up to 2.4× in embodied carbon, showing the risk of ignoring sustainability. Combined optimization strategies provided 19-20% carbon reductions with minimal latency increases, demonstrating a practical trade-off path. The framework includes pruning strategies, hardware estimation, and architectural simulation based on real-world hardware templates. This research lays the groundwork for sustainable ML system design by embedding environmental metrics into the optimization pipeline. In conclusion, this research sheds light on a practical path toward building environmentally responsible AI systems. By aligning model design with hardware capabilities from the outset and factoring in carbon impact, the researchers demonstrate that it’s possible to make smarter choices that don’t just chase speed or energy savings but genuinely reduce emissions. The results highlight that conventional methods can unintentionally lead to higher carbon costs when optimized for narrow goals like latency. With CATransformers, developers have a tool to rethink how performance and sustainability can go hand in hand, especially as AI continues to scale across industries. As long as we keep producing new gadgets and devices, there will be all kinds of waste that will probably end up in the landfill eventually once they reach end of life. Good thing there are designers that are constantly seeking innovative ways to integrate sustainability into their creations. One of those designers is Joe Doucet, known for his thought-provoking and often minimalist aesthetic. This time he has taken this sustainability challenge by creating a piece of furniture that is also a compelling statement about the potential for repurposing discarded materials and transforming them into objects of beauty and functionality. The OLO Table is constructed from discarded electronic waste with old refrigerators, keyboards, and computer mice are given a new lease on life. Designer: Joe Doucet The material at the heart of this innovative table is Polygood Oyster, a testament to the transformative power of recycling. This unique material is meticulously crafted from polystyrene, carefully extracted from a diverse range of electronic waste. Once harvested, the polystyrene undergoes a process of thermoforming, where heat and pressure are applied to shape it into the desired forms, in this case, the table’s base. The inherent beauty of Polygood lies in its composition. The recycling process leaves behind a captivating tapestry of colorful flecks and fragments, remnants of the electronics from which it originated. These visual inclusions aren’t imperfections; they serve as a tangible layer of history, each table subtly narrating the story of its past life. This intriguing visual element adds depth and character to the piece, making it a unique object of conversation. Furthermore, the fluid geometry of the OLO table, with its seamless and monolithic top flowing into semi-circular legs, directly embodies the closed-loop design philosophy championed by both Joe Doucet and The Good Plastic Company, the manufacturers of Polygood. This continuous form visually represents the cyclical nature of the material, where discarded resources are given new purpose in a closed system, minimizing waste and maximizing material value. The OLO table is more than just an aesthetically pleasing piece of furniture; it embodies a powerful message about circularity and the value of waste. By utilizing discarded electronics, Doucet addresses the growing problem of e-waste, transforming what is typically considered refuse into a desirable and functional object. This approach challenges our perception of waste and highlights the potential for innovative upcycling in the design industry. However, you probably won’t be able to add this to your space as it’s a one-off creation and there are no plans to produce more in the future.
