    Earlier this year, Apple launched the iPhone 16e. While in many ways it was an iPhone SE successor, the naming scheme changes things up a bit compared to the iPhone SE. Now that it’s part of the mainline iPhone lineup, many have wondered – will this be an annual refresh? Today, we’ll be recapping the rumors.

    iPhone 17e: Annual refresh?
    According to leaker Instant Digital on Weibo, Apple is already preparing trial production of an iPhone 17e, suggesting that it’s almost definitely on the way:

    The setup of the 17e production line is being planned. This answers the question: There will be a 17e next year, and now it is almost in the trial production stage.

    It’s unclear what would change in an iPhone 17e. Dynamic Island would certainly be a welcome upgrade. It’ll also likely adopt the A19 chipset found in the upcoming iPhone 17 models. It might also debut the C2 modem, though that’s just a personal guess.
    One way or another, it seems quite plausible that the new ‘e’ iPhone will be an annual refresh, unlike the iPhone SE that came before it.
    Reputable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also anticipates an iPhone 17e launching in the first half of 2026.
    Beyond iPhone 17e
    Earlier this month, The Information reported that Apple will be transitioning to a split iPhone launch strategy, with iPhone 18 Air, Pro, Pro Max, and the foldable launching in fall 2026, and iPhone 18 and 18e launching in spring 2027.
    While this detail in itself doesn’t confirm an annual refresh for the ‘e’ iPhone, it does at least indicate that new entry-level iPhones will launch more regularly than iPhone SE models, which launched in 2016, 2020, and 2022, leaving an average refresh cycle of 3 years.

    Overall, it’s too early to say for sure. However, I’d lean towards the answer being yes: Apple will probably launch an iPhone 17e in early 2026.
    I do personally hope that Apple diversifies their offerings a little bit. With the entry-level iPhone being now, I think it could potentially be really cool if we saw an iPhone mini renaissance. It could potentially start at making it a much more appealing purchase than the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini at That’s more of a pipe dream, though.

    A new report shows Android phones outfitted with Qualcomm cellular modems outperforming the iPhone 16e with its own Apple C1 modem. Unfortunately, the limited nature of the tests, combined with the fact that it was commissioned by Qualcomm, means we can’t learn much from it.

    The tests were performed by Cellular Insights, and you can read the summary here or the full report here. The general summary of the results is that the Android devices had download speeds around 35 percent faster than the iPhone 16e, and upload speeds between 81 percent and 91 percent faster.

    That the report was paid for by Qualcomm, of course, makes it suspect, but there are other limitations worth noting.

    First, the report doesn’t let us know which Android phones were tested. It says one is “a 2025 flagship device powered by Snapdragon X80 5G Modem-RF System priced at ” and the other is “a 2024 flagship device powered by Snapdragon X75 5G Modem-RF System priced at ” That narrows it down somewhat, but it’s odd that the iPhone 16e is namedand the Android devices are kept somewhat secret.

    Second, the testing all took place in only three locations in a single small geographical area—the Astoria neighborhood in Queens, New York City. Even our own testing, which we noted was quite limited, managed to test five locations around the greater Sacramento area. Finally, the study exclusively used T-Mobile’s commercial SA 5G network. As with our own testing, which took place only on the Verizon network, looking at a single carriercaptures only a very limited experience.

    A more extensive set of tests comes from Ookla, whose report back in March used data from many users across the country testing with its popular Speedtest app. That report captured the experience on all three major carriers, and interestingly, the gap between the iPhone 16and the iPhone 16ewas widest on, you guessed it, T-Mobile’s network.

    So this test looks slightly suspect. Not only is it paid for by Qualcomm, but it pits the iPhone 16e against unnamed Android phones, in just three locations of a single neighborhood, on the carrier in which Qualcomm’s modems just happen to outperform Apple’s by the widest margin. And it only tests upload and download speeds, not other aspects such as stability when moving within and between cell areas, latency, or power utilization. None of this means the report is false, but it gives the appearance of cherry-picking tests to get the results you want.

    Ultimately, there’s nothing of note here. The C1 modem was never meant to outperform Qualcomm’s best modems, only to provide a comparable experience to mid-tier products with good stability and lower power utilization. Apple’s future modemsare expected to increase performance with each generation, ultimately with the aim of beating Qualcomm’s best offerings in 2026 or 2027.

Apple’s future modems (C2 and C3, presumably) are expected to increase performance with each generation, ultimately with the aim of beating Qualcomm’s best offerings in 2026 or 2027.

    According to a recent investor note from GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu, Apple might have a pair of surprises in store for the iPhone 17 lineup this fall. Most notably, Pu has seemingly changed his prediction that the entire iPhone 17 lineup will use a version of the A19 chip. Instead, he now believes the base model iPhone 17 will use the same A18 chip that’s used in the iPhone 16.

    Pu had previously predicted that the entire iPhone 17 lineup would use the A19 chip and the differentiating factor would be the RAM. The analyst had said the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air would have 8GB, while the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max would have 12GB of RAM.
    Now, Pu claims that the iPhone 17 will use 8GB of RAM, while the iPhone 17 Air will feature 12GB of RAM just like the Pro models.
    Also in this analyst note, Pu says that all four iPhone 17 models will adopt a new metalens technology for the proximity sensor. The “metalens” technology may help Apple dramatically reduce the size of the Face ID sensor. Previously, Pu had said this change would only come to the iPhone 17 Pro Max. If it pans out, this means the entire iPhone 17 will feature a smaller Dynamic Island.

    The XRING 01 is just the base of what Xiaomi has in store for future smartphone releases, starting with the company making history by becoming the first Chinese firm to introduce a silicon mass produced on the 3nm process. Eventually, we shall witness the launch of more SoCs tailor-made for the affordable options, with an executive stating that these plans do not just stop here. Similar to Apple’s C1 5G modem, Xiaomi also wants to materialize a baseband chip, but has yet to provide a concrete launch timeline.

    So far, the XRING 01 is currently found in the Xiaomi 15S Pro and the Pad 7 Ultra, and both of them are currently occupying the premium space of their respective categories. The company made the right decision to introduce a flagship custom SoC because it is solid proof that the silicon can compete with the heavy hitters from Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Apple, which have been developing solutions for years. However, Xiaomi will not keep itself limited to the top-end products, because @SKundojjala posted a statement on X from Lu Weibing, a company partner, regarding future plans.
    Currently, Xiaomi wants to focus on the flagship space, but will eventually extend its efforts to the more affordable range. Additionally, the statement mentions that the Chinese technology superstar wants to develop its modem, following in the footsteps of Apple and its C1 5G baseband chip. However, just because a plan is in the pipeline does not necessarily mean that it will be executed immediately, because the Xiaomi executive states that ‘we are just taking off.’

    It could take several years before we witness a custom 5G modem, with Xiaomi likely running into the same development roadblocks as Apple. Another option for the company is to utilize existing technology, such as the XRING 01, in more affordable smartphones and tablets, but that is only when its successor arrives in the near future. Keep in mind that there is a binned version of the XRING 01 that currently fuels the Pad 7 Ultra, giving the company yet another alternative to reduce costs while equipping its non-flagship smartphones with top-end parts.

    For nearly 10 years I have written about science and technology and I’ve been an early adopter of new tech for much longer. As a teenager in the mid-1990s I annoyed the hell out of my family by jamming up the phone line for hours with a dial-up modem; connecting to bulletin board communities all over the country.When I started writing professionally about technology in 2016 I was all for our seemingly inevitable transhumanist future. When the chip is ready I want it immediately stuck in my head, I remember saying proudly in our busy office. Why not improve ourselves where we can?Since then, my general view on technology has dramatically shifted. Watching a growing class of super-billionaires erode the democratizing nature of technology by maintaining corporate controls over what we use and how we use it has fundamentally changed my personal relationship with technology. Seeing deeply disturbing philosophical stances like longtermism, effective altruism, and singulartarianism envelop the minds of those rich, powerful men controlling the world has only further entrenched inequality.A recent Black Mirror episode really rammed home the perils we face by having technology so controlled by capitalist interests. A sick woman is given a brain implant connected to a cloud server to keep her alive. The system is managed through a subscription service where the user pays for monthly access to the cognitive abilities managed by the implant. As time passes, that subscription cost gets more and more expensive - and well, it’s Black Mirror, so you can imagine where things end up.

    The enshittification of our digital world has been impossible to ignore. You’re not imagining things, Google Search is getting worse.But until the emergence of AII’ve never been truly concerned about a technological innovation, in and of itself.A recent article looked at how generative AI tech such as ChatGPT is being used by university students. The piece was authored by a tech admin at New York University and it’s filled with striking insights into how AI is shaking the foundations of educational institutions.Not unsurprisingly, students are using ChatGPT for everything from summarizing complex texts to completely writing essays from scratch. But one of the reflections quoted in the article immediately jumped out at me.When a student was asked why they relied on generative AI so much when putting work together they responded, “You’re asking me to go from point A to point B, why wouldn’t I use a car to get there?”My first response was, of course, why wouldn’t you? It made complete sense.For a second.And then I thought, hang on, what is being lost by speeding from point A to point B in a car?

    Let’s further the analogy. You need to go to the grocery store. It’s a 10-minute walk away but a three-minute drive. Why wouldn’t you drive?Well, the only benefit of driving is saving time. That’s inarguable. You’ll be back home and cooking up your dinner before the person on foot even gets to the grocery store.Congratulations. You saved yourself about 20 minutes. In a world where efficiency trumps everything this is the best choice. Use that extra 20 minutes in your day wisely.But what are the benefits of not driving, taking the extra time, and walking?First, you have environmental benefits. Not using a car unnecessarily; spewing emissions into the air, either directly from combustion or indirectly for those with electric cars.Secondly, you have health benefits from the little bit of exercise you get by walking. Our stationary lives are quite literally killing us so a 20-minute walk a day is likely to be incredibly positive for your health.But there are also more abstract benefits to be gained by walking this short trip from A to B.Walking connects us to our neighborhood. It slows things down. Helps us better understand the community and environment we are living in. A recent study summarized the benefits of walking around your neighborhood, suggesting the practice leads to greater social connectedness and reduced feelings of isolation.So what are we losing when we use a car to get from point A to point B? Potentially a great deal.But let’s move out of abstraction and into the real world.An article in the Columbia Journalism Review asked nearly 20 news media professionals how they were integrating AI into their personal workflow. The responses were wildly varied. Some journalists refused to use AI for anything more than superficial interview transcription, while others use it broadly, to edit text, answer research questions, summarize large bodies of science text, or search massive troves of data for salient bits of information.In general, the line almost all those media professionals shared was they would never explicitly use AI to write their articles. But for some, almost every other stage of the creative process in developing a story was fair game for AI assistance.I found this a little horrifying. Farming out certain creative development processes to AI felt not only ethically wrong but also like key cognitive stages were being lost, skipped over, considered unimportant.I’ve never considered myself to be an extraordinarily creative person. I don’t feel like I come up with new or original ideas when I work. Instead, I see myself more as a compiler. I enjoy finding connections between seemingly disparate things. Linking ideas and using those pieces as building blocks to create my own work. As a writer and journalist I see this process as the whole point.A good example of this is a story I published in late 2023 investigating the relationship between long Covid and psychedelics. The story began earlier in the year when I read an intriguing study linking long Covid with serotonin abnormalities in the gut. Being interested in the science of psychedelics, and knowing that psychedelics very much influence serotonin receptors, I wondered if there could be some kind of link between these two seemingly disparate topics.The idea sat in the back of my mind for several months, until I came across a person who told me they had been actively treating their own long Covid symptoms with a variety of psychedelic remedies. After an expansive and fascinating interview I started diving into different studies looking to understand how certain psychedelics affect the body, and whether there could be any associations with long Covid treatments.Eventually I stumbled across a few compelling associations. It took weeks of reading different scientific studies, speaking to various researchers, and thinking about how several discordant threads could be somehow linked.Could AI have assisted me in the process of developing this story?No. Because ultimately, the story comprised an assortment of novel associations that I drew between disparate ideas all encapsulated within the frame of a person’s subjective experience.And it is this idea of novelty that is key to understanding why modern AI technology is not actually intelligence but a simulation of intelligence.

    ChatGPT, and all the assorted clones that have emerged over the last couple of years, are a form of technology called LLMs. At the risk of enraging those who actually work in this mind-bendingly complex field, I’m going to dangerously over-simplify how these things work.It’s important to know that when you ask a system like ChatGPT a question it doesn’t understand what you are asking it. The response these systems generate to any prompt is simply a simulation of what it computes a response would look like based on a massive dataset.So if I were to ask the system a random question like, “What color are cats?”, the system would scrape the world’s trove of information on cats and colors to create a response that mirrors the way most pre-existing text talks about cats and colors. The system builds its response word by word, creating something that reads coherently to us, by establishing a probability for what word should follow each prior word.
