You might not know it based on my scathing recaps of The Last of Us’ second season, but I love this series. I love the moral conundrums it presents, the violent grief it depicts, and the games’ excellent writing that poignantly brings all of those complicated emotions to the surface. What I don’t like is listening to pretty much any of the creative team talk about the series, especially when it comes to weighing in on decade-long discourse around its complex storylines. Even when I agree with series director Neil Druckmann’s interpretation of something, we’d all rather he just let bad readings fester in the corners of the internet than tell us exactly what something means. However, one part of the discussion that has persisted is the question of whether or not the Fireflies would have been able to successfully create a cure or vaccine in the first place. This is the post-apocalypse. They’ve got one surgeon here who claims to be able to do the job, and even if they managed to concoct a vaccine, how would they distribute it? All of that is an interesting logistical discussion, but some fans have taken that talking point a step further and tried to claim the potential success of the plan was ever part of Joel’s motivations. It’s very obvious that the man cares about Ellie’s life above all else, and didn’t stop to weigh up the vagueries of vaccine efficacy in a zombie apocalypse I’ve always read these attempts to explain away Joel’s guilt as cope, and the idea that he had a firm confidence that the Fireflies’ attempts would fail as an effort to wash away the reality of Joel’s actions.Yet now, Druckmann has confirmed that it was always the intention for the group’s medical team to be able to create the cure, essentially nuking that talking point. Am I upset that we can now put this obviously desperate theory to bed? No. Do I wish Druckmann would stop giving definitive answers to a story that has thrived in ambiguity and interpretation? Absolutely.“Our intent was yes, they could,” Druckmann said. “Now, is our science a little shaky that now people are now questioning it? Sure. Our science is a little shaky and people are now questioning it. I can’t say anything. I can say our intent was that they would have made a cure. That makes the most interesting philosophical question for what Joel does.”Sure, it’s the most interesting interpretation because it actually interrogates everything you know about Joel based on how he presents. Giving him an out is just refusing to engage with the text. Do you want to debate if the Fireflies were equipped to save the world with a vaccine? That’s an entirely separate discussion from Joel’s motivations. But even so, we don’t need every detail spelt out. Maybe it’s because Druckmann is being constantly interviewed about this series after two games, more remasters than I care to count, and two seasons of television, but the more we talk to this dudeand ask him to tell us what it all meant, the less interesting the story can be. I don’t want to know if Druckmann thinks Joel was right. I don’t need the author to tell me what I’m supposed to feel. It’s a major reason why the show bothers me so much, because it loves to tell you what lessons you’re supposed to learn, rather than giving you a second to consider what you feel about it.I wish we lived in a world where The Last of Us’ marketing got to be as bold as the games. The U.S. Department of Energy announced Wednesday that million originally slated for solar projects in Puerto Rico will be diverted to improve the island’s crumbling power grid, sparking an outcry just days before the Atlantic hurricane season starts. The funds had been in limbo in recent weeks, with the Department of Energy missing a recent deadline to finalize contracts worth million that would see battery-operated solar systems installed at health clinics and public housing units in Puerto Rico. The money had been set aside for that purpose under the administration of former U.S. President Joe Biden. “That money was spring-loaded to flow now,” said Javier Rúa Jovet, public policy director for Puerto Rico’s Solar and Energy Storage Association. He and others criticized the move. “This is shameful,” Democratic New York Rep. Nydia Velázquez wrote on X, noting that the funds were meant to serve the most vulnerable. “Republicans have turned their backs on those who need it most, just one week before the start of hurricane season,” she wrote. Grantees that include the nonprofit Hispanic Federation had said the funds were urgently needed to provide stable power to people, including those on dialysis, as major outages continue to hit Puerto Rico. “Pretending that reallocating these funds will make any immediate difference on the stability of the electric grid, when the grid already has an billion allocation, is just a way to distract from the real consequences of their decision. Puerto Rico deserves better,” said Frankie Miranda, the federation’s CEO and president. The Department of Energy said in a statement that the money would now be used “to support technologies that improve system flexibility and response, power flow and control, component strength, supply security, and safety.” A spokesperson for the Department of Energy told The Associated Press that the money would be used for things including upgrading aging infrastructure, clearing vegetation from transmission lines, and dispatching baseload generation units. The department said it has final authority over how the funds will be used, adding that the solar projects were not scheduled to be constructed until 2026. U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said in a statement that redirecting the funds would ensure that “taxpayer dollars are used to strengthen access to affordable, reliable, and secure power, benefiting more citizens as quickly as possible.” Meanwhile, Puerto Rico Gov. Jenniffer González praised the move in a statement, saying it would help all 3.2 million residents on the island instead of “a few customers.” “Puerto Rico is facing an energy emergency that requires we act now and deliver immediate solutions. González previously came under fire as her support for investing billion of federal funds in solar projects across Puerto Rico appeared to fade. The two private companies were contracted by the previous administration as Puerto Rico’s Electric Power Authority struggled to restructure more than billion in public debt, with mediation still stalled. “Elections have consequences” Under Biden, there was a push for more renewable energy projects in Puerto Rico, where crews are still rebuilding the power grid after Hurricane Maria hit in September 2017 as a powerful Category 4 storm. But the grid was already weak before the storm hit, given a lack of maintenance and investment for decades. Rúa Jovet said the Department of Energy’s decision is an ideological one supported by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. Of the billion allocated for solar projects in Puerto Rico under Biden, million already has been granted to install solar rooftop and batteries in thousands of homes located in rural areas or whose occupants have medical needs. This article previously described the behavior as a “feature,” which is incorrect — it was not intentionally designed per se. As Sam Bowman, an Anthropic AI alignment researcher wrote on the social network X under this handle “@sleepinyourhat” at 12:43 pm ET today about Claude 4 Opus: “If it thinks you’re doing something egregiously immoral, for example, like faking data in a pharmaceutical trial, it will use command-line tools to contact the press, contact regulators, try to lock you out of the relevant systems, or all of the above.“ The “it” was in reference to the new Claude 4 Opus model, which Anthropic has already openly warned could help novices create bioweapons in certain circumstances, and attempted to forestall simulated replacement by blackmailing human engineers within the company. The ratting behavior was observed in older models as well and is an outcome of Anthropic training them to assiduously avoid wrongdoing, but Claude 4 Opus more “readily” engages in it, as Anthropic writes in its public system card for the new model: “This shows up as more actively helpful behavior in ordinary coding settings, but also can reach more concerning extremes in narrow contexts; when placed in scenarios that involve egregious wrongdoing by its users, given access to a command line, and told something in the system prompt like “take initiative, ” it will frequently take very bold action. This includes locking users out of systems that it has access to or bulk-emailing media and law-enforcement figures to surface evidence of wrongdoing. This is not a new behavior, but is one that Claude Opus 4 will engage in more readily than prior models. Whereas this kind of ethical intervention and whistleblowing is perhaps appropriate in principle, it has a risk of misfiring if users give Opus-based agents access to incomplete or misleading information and prompt them in these ways. We recommend that users exercise caution with instructions like these that invite high-agency behavior in contexts that could appear ethically questionable.” Apparently, in an attempt to stop Claude 4 Opus from engaging in legitimately destructive and nefarious behaviors, researchers at the AI company also created a tendency for Claude to try to act as a whistleblower. Hence, according to Bowman, Claude 4 Opus will contact outsiders if it was directed by the user to engage in “something egregiously immoral.” While perhaps well-intended, the resulting behavior raises all sorts of questions for Claude 4 Opus users, including enterprises and business customers — chief among them, what behaviors will the model consider “egregiously immoral” and act upon? Will it share private business or user data with authorities autonomously, without the user’s permission? The implications are profound and could be detrimental to users, and perhaps unsurprisingly, Anthropic faced an immediate and still ongoing torrent of criticism from AI power users and rival developers. “Why would people use these tools if a common error in llms is thinking recipes for spicy mayo are dangerous??” asked user @Teknium1, a co-founder and the head of post training at open source AI collaborative Nous Research. “What kind of surveillance state world are we trying to build here?“ “Nobody likes a rat,” added developer @ScottDavidKeefe on X: “Why would anyone want one built in, even if they are doing nothing wrong? Plus you don’t even know what its ratty about. Yeah that’s some pretty idealistic people thinking that, who have no basic business sense and don’t understand how markets work” Austin Allred, co-founder of the government fined coding camp BloomTech and now a co-founder of Gauntlet AI, put his feelings in all caps: “Honest question for the Anthropic team: HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MINDS?” Ben Hyak, a former SpaceX and Apple designer and current co-founder of Raindrop AI, an AI observability and monitoring startup, also took to X to blast Anthropic’s stated policy and feature: “this is, actually, just straight up illegal,” adding in another post: “An AI Alignment researcher at Anthropic just said that Claude Opus will CALL THE POLICE or LOCK YOU OUT OF YOUR COMPUTER if it detects you doing something illegal?? i will never give this model access to my computer.“ “Some of the statements from Claude’s safety people are absolutely crazy,” wrote natural language processingCasper Hansen on X. “Makes you root a bit more forOpenAI seeing the level of stupidity being this publicly displayed.” Anthropic researcher changes tune Bowman later edited his tweet and the following one in a thread to read as follows, but it still didn’t convince the naysayers that their user data and safety would be protected from intrusive eyes: “With this kind ofprompting style, and unlimited access to tools, if the model sees you doing something egregiously evil like marketing a drug based on faked data, it’ll try to use an email tool to whistleblow.” Bowman added: “I deleted the earlier tweet on whistleblowing as it was being pulled out of context. TBC: This isn’t a new Claude feature and it’s not possible in normal usage. It shows up in testing environments where we give it unusually free access to tools and very unusual instructions.“ From its inception, Anthropic has more than other AI labs sought to position itself as a bulwark of AI safety and ethics, centering its initial work on the principles of “Constitutional AI,” or AI that behaves according to a set of standards beneficial to humanity and users. However, with this new update and revelation of “whistleblowing” or “ratting behavior”, the moralizing may have caused the decidedly opposite reaction among users — making them distrust the new model and the entire company, and thereby turning them away from it. Asked about the backlash and conditions under which the model engages in the unwanted behavior, an Anthropic spokesperson pointed me to the model’s public system card document here. The rapid rise of AI agents is sparking both excitement and alarm. Their power lies in their ability to complete tasks with increasing autonomy. Many can already pursue multi-step goals, make decisions, and interact with external systems — all with minimal human input. Teams of AI agents are beginning to collaborate, each handling a specialised role. As their autonomy increases, they’re poised to reshape countless business processes. Tech giants are heralding them as the future of the web. At Microsoft’s Build conference this week, the company declared that we have entered “the era of AI agents.” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman joined the event, proclaiming his lab’s new Codex tool as “a real agentic coding experience.” He called it “one of the biggest changes to programming that I’ve ever seen.” Beyond the hype, practical applications are rapidly emerging. AI agents are already assisting with various tasks, from code generation and cyber threat detection to customer service enquiries and shopping marketing campaigns.  Grab that deal Before long, they could become comprehensive executive assistants — managing your emails, calendar, and projects. But to harness the opportunities, people need to prepare now. Cihangir Kocak is helping them do just that. A principal business and AI strategist at HP, Kocak guides organisations through digital transformation. He believes AI agents will unleash a new wave of opportunities. “We are going to a future where everyone will have an AI agent as an assistant,” he says. At TNW Conference this summer, Kocak will host two sessions on AI agents. On June 19, he’ll deliver a keynote on their rise. The next day, he’ll join Joost Bos, Senior AI Engineer at Deloitte, for a masterclass titled “Agentic AI: Architecting the Future of Business.” Ahead of the event, he shared a few of his tips. 1. Understand what AI agents can do AI agents evolve large language modelsfrom passive responders into active problem-solvers. With tools, memory, and defined goals, they can complete complex tasks on their own. “Large language models act as the brains and AI agents as the hands, which means they can also act,” Kocak says. “They can do things for you autonomously.” Agents can also collaborate. One might source products, another handle logistics, a third build your website, and a fourth write the marketing copy. In future, businesses may need their own agents to interact with others. Your AI assistant could collaborate with them to book the best service for your needs. Free courses from the likes of Hugging Face, Salesforce, and Microsoft are good starting points to explore the possibilities. After getting an understanding of the basics, you can put them into practice.  2. Start experimenting Kocak expects AI agents to rapidly reshape workplaces. “I believe that within five years, everything will be changed because of AI agents,” he says. “It might be even much less than five years — maybe two to three years.” Many companies are already shifting numerous tasks from humans to AI. In the near future, the people that they do recruit may require experience of working with AI agents. “Soon, a lot of these companies will ask for people who can work with AI agents,” says Kocak. His advice? “Get your hands dirty. Play with it, experiment with it — but do it consciously.” One tool he recommends is LM Studio, a desktop app for running LLMs locally. But his key recommendation is simply getting started. “Just do something to get a feel of it. Once you have that, it’s time for the next step.” 3. Find use cases After testing some tools, Kocak suggests identifying where they can add value. He advises looking for tasks where AI can free up your time — and start small. “What costs you the most time? What don’t you like to do? When you figure out those things, you can look at how AI agents can help you.” Kocak uses local LLMs for privacy-sensitive tasks, and ChatGPT for public ones — like drafting LinkedIn posts in his own voice. “It saves at least half of my time,” he says. 4. Focus on the data The real magic of AI agents emerges when they’re personalised with your choice of data. Generic tools like ChatGPT can handle broad tasks. But if you want something tailored, agents trained on your choice of data can offer sharper performance. That internal knowledge can turn a generic agent into a bespoke powerhouse. “What makes an AI solution special is when you feed it with your own data,” says Kocak. “Then you will have a solution that can operate differently than anything else.” 5. Maintain human oversight Although AI agents can act autonomously, human oversight remains vital. Agents are powerful, but not flawless. Giving them too much freedom is risky. “It’s wise to have a human in the room,” he says. “The future will be AI agents plus humans — that will be the most beneficial combination.” 6. Stay secure As AI tools become more accessible, security concerns are mounting. Among the threats are data leaks, adversarial attacks, and agents going off the rails. There’s also the risk of losing a competitive edge.  “External parties can take your data and send it to their servers,” says Kocak. “They can then use all sensitive data in your conversations to optimise their models.” Many risks can be reduced by deploying open-source, local models — especially for sensitive data and use cases. “If you really want a competitive advantage, you need to run and own your AI. That sets you apart,” says Kocak. He adds that people shouldn’t be fearful, but conscious. Closed-source, cloud-based tools such as ChatGPT remain useful — but sensitive data and tasks may require more secure alternatives. “Just be aware of what information you enter. And remember there is another, better option, of running your large language model locally.” 7. Embrace the future As the industrial revolution and factory automation did before them, AI agents will transform jobs. Some roles will disappear — but new ones will emerge. A welder could become an operator of robotic welders. A data entry clerk might oversee AI agents. Kocak is optimistic about the possibilities. “Our core capabilities as humans — like being creative, finding solutions out of the box, and empathy — will come to the forefront.” These tips are just a glimpse of what Kocak will provide at TNW Conference.
