  • The Anki Vector Died And Gave Birth To The Focus Buddy: Hands-on at BEYOND Expo 2025

Remember the Vector? A tiny tractor-shaped anthropomorphized robot that sat on your desk, held up snacks, and kept you company? If you do, you also remember its unceremonious demise. Anki folded due to bankruptcy, selling all its assets to another company that pretty much killed the Vector’s functionality. It’s sort of like the Humane AI pin, which ended up getting pretty much shuttered after the company declared it was shutting down. There are now thousands of Anki Vector toys just gathering dust, sitting in the shadow of what could have been.
However, a similar product may be fulfilling the Vector’s role, with the exact same demeanor and cuteness. Meet the Focus Buddy, a tiny robot designed to look like an anthropomorphic computer, sitting on your desk. Like the Vector, the Focus Buddy interacts with you, through input and expression – however, it has a more distinct purpose than simply entertainment – its purpose is to boost human focus.
    Designer: Neurofocus.ai

Focus Buddy is a tiny touch-enabled device that uses a combination of sensors to check your attentiveness. Think a pomodoro timer but with AI chops. It’s playful, but plays a pretty fundamental role in your productivity, checking to see if you’re attentive, distracted, or just dissociating.

The tiny device, no larger than a chonky webcam, sits on your tabletop, with a 2-ish inch screen that usually shows a friendly face with blinking eyes similar to the Anki Vector. Tap the screen, and you can access a variety of settings as well as games that help boost your focus.

The way the Focus Buddy works is simple yet advanced. A webcam on top captures your face, reading your gaze, how many times you blink, and whether you look attentive, sleepy, or just listless. However, a millimeter-wave sensor inside the robot also manages to read your heart rate, combining the two metrics to judge your focus. If it detects a drop, it alerts you, and encourages you to either get back to work, or boost your focus using one of its on-board focus-enhancing exercises.

The device is currently in a very rudimentary phase, with its makers looking to slowly reach critical mass. For now, however, the Focus Buddy is a perfect symbol of what the Vector could have been – a buddy that guides you through the day and enables you to be your best self. Also, it’s the perfect size for cat-hats, so you can customize your Focus Buddy with a rodeo had, a tiara, probably even a modded 3D printed Batman or Iron Man mask that works without blocking the screen or impeding the webcam!

As Gamers Express Concern About Borderlands 4 Potentially Costing Gearbox Chief Randy Pitchford Says: ‘If You’re a Real Fan, You’ll Find a Way to Make It Happen’ - IGN

Gearbox chief Randy Pitchford has responded to a fan who expressed concern about the prospect of paying for Borderlands 4, saying: “if you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way to make it happen.”

    www.ign.com

    The Quote

    Here's the exchange:

"Randy, this game better not be 80 dollars. Don't take that risk, a lot of gamers aren't gonna pay 80 dollars and feed this notion of constant increase of the price tag. You are the CEO, you have some say with the price when it comes to your publisher."

    And here's Randy Pitchford's response:

"A) Not my call. B) If you're a real fan, you'll find a way to make it happen. My local game store had Starflight for Sega Genesis for in 1991 when I was just out of high school working minimum wage at an ice cream parlor in Pismo Beach and I found a way to make it happen."

Unsure of the price, and it's not his call

Last week, during a PAX East panel, Pitchford insisted that he didn't know the Borderlands 4 price but refused to rule out "I'll tell you the truth. I don't know. That is the truth. I'll hit it straight on. It's an interesting time," he said.

"On one level, we've got a competitive marketplace where the people that make those choices want to sell as many units as possible and they want to be careful about people that are price-sensitive. There are some folks who don't want to see prices go up, even the ones deciding what the prices are.

Take-Two Boss is open to In a recent interview, IGN asked Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick if the company would go to for its games. Zelnick wouldn't say either way, but did say consumers would be "willing to pay for the very best."

"I have said for a long time that we offer enormous value and that that's our job," Zelnick said. "Of course, we certainly believe that compared to other forms of entertainment, whether that's movie tickets or live events or streaming services, the value for our entertainment that we offer is just astonishing, and it's our job. It's our job to deliver much more value than what we charge. That's our goal. We think consumers are willing to pay for the very best. It's our job to make the very best."

    More at the Link

Firstly, if the game is going to cost I would HOPE that means the Switch 2 version would be on the cart. Game-Key prices are going to garner even more ire when they're used for fully priced titles instead of "cheaper" releases.

With that said, 2K was one of the first publishers to instantly jump on the price raise when the PS5/XSX launched, so I would definitely expect to be the new norm in the US for any titles from them and Borderlands 4 being the start wouldn't be a stretch. I am curious to see how the higher base price impacts games where selling a season pass alongside it is a big deal. Could just be everything costs more across the board, but I guess we'll see.

Would not be surprised, the industry kept waiting for the moment to increase priceagain and Nintendo just opened the way for everyone else, haha.

Sometimes it really is better to not say anything at all. Much, much easier too.

Like, before you say something publicly, think to yourself "am I about to say something incredibly out of touch that makes me sound like a prick, even if I really strongly believe it?". Randy and lot of these execs seem to lack that filter.

He's right but it sounds obnoxious to say that out loud lmao. Borderlands is a series whose games are always packed with content and post-launch support so it's not like these guys are trying to sell you a 15 hour game that you'll play once and then never touch again. For games like this the value proposition is still high even at

Always find it funny how that element is just ignored a lot of the time.
Games used to cost -! Ignoring the fact that having a roof over your head was vastly cheaper to acquire among other things.

[IGN] Fans concerned about Borderlands 4 Potentially Costing $80, Gearbox's Randy P. Says: ‘If You’re a Real Fan, You’ll Find a Way to Make it happen'
Jawmuncher Crisis Dino Moderator Oct 25, 2017 44,816 Ibis Island As Gamers Express Concern About Borderlands 4 Potentially Costing $80, Gearbox Chief Randy Pitchford Says: ‘If You’re a Real Fan, You’ll Find a Way to Make It Happen’ - IGN Gearbox chief Randy Pitchford has responded to a fan who expressed concern about the prospect of paying $80 for Borderlands 4, saying: “if you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way to make it happen.” www.ign.com The Quote Here's the exchange: "Randy, this game better not be 80 dollars. Don't take that risk, a lot of gamers aren't gonna pay 80 dollars and feed this notion of constant increase of the price tag. You are the CEO, you have some say with the price when it comes to your publisher." And here's Randy Pitchford's response: "A) Not my call. B) If you're a real fan, you'll find a way to make it happen. My local game store had Starflight for Sega Genesis for $80 in 1991 when I was just out of high school working minimum wage at an ice cream parlor in Pismo Beach and I found a way to make it happen." Click to expand... Click to shrink... Unsure of the price, and it's not his call Last week, during a PAX East panel, Pitchford insisted that he didn't know the Borderlands 4 price but refused to rule out $80. "I'll tell you the truth. Click to expand... Click to shrink... Take-Two Boss is open to $80 In a recent interview, IGN asked Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick if the company would go to $80 for its games. Zelnick wouldn't say either way, but did say consumers would be "willing to pay for the very best." "I have said for a long time that we offer enormous value and that that's our job," Zelnick said. It's our job to make the very best." Click to expand... Click to shrink... More at the Link Firstly, if the game is going to cost $80, I would HOPE that means the Switch 2 version would be on the cart. Game-Key prices are going to garner even more ire when they're used for fully priced titles instead of "cheaper" releases. With that said, 2K was one of the first publishers to instantly jump on the $70 price raise when the PS5/XSX launched, so I would definitely expect $80 to be the new norm in the US for any titles from them and Borderlands 4 being the start wouldn't be a stretch. I am curious to see how the higher base price impacts games where selling a season pass alongside it is a big deal (As DLC for BL has always been a key part of its success). Could just be everything costs more across the board, but I guess we'll see.  Last edited: Today at 10:35 AM Zukkoyaki Member Oct 25, 2017 14,279 I really like Gearbox's games but Randy is a dumbass.   Bucca Member Oct 25, 2017 5,517 fuckin lmao   Kouriozan Member Oct 25, 2017 24,800 Would not be surprised, the industry kept waiting for the moment to increase price (of AAAs) again and Nintendo just opened the way for everyone else, haha.   PlanetSmasher The Abominable Showman Member Oct 25, 2017 132,841 Even if he is technically right (I saved up my allowance for the SNES JRPGs I wanted to play in the 90s) it's really not something you come out and say.   Greywaren Member Jul 16, 2019 13,084 Spain I know there are way worse people out there, but I really, REALLY can't stand this guy. Growing up in Switzerland, Constance Jaeggi’s journey from a suburban area of central Europe to the rural grasslands of Texas was guided by what she describes as an “unexplainable fascination” with horses. She moved to the U.S. to pursue a competitive riding career and attend university, eventually becoming a rancher and essentially revolving her entire life around the gentle giants.
“Throughout college, I was spending all my weekends and free time on horseback,” Jaeggi tells Colossal. Over time, she was drawn to exploring horse culture through visual means, picking up a camera and documenting the animals, people, and landscapes around her. “I was curious about the age-old human-horse relationship and how that impacts humans’ relationship with horses today,” she adds. “Photography was a way to lean into that curiosity and express myself differently.”

While attending rodeos and traveling throughout the western community, Jaeggi became acquainted with the custom of escaramuza. It’s the only female event of the Mexican national sport charrería, and the activity combines equestrian and livestock competitions like roping and working with cattle.
Escaramuza, which translates to “skirmish,” was inspired by the women soldiers, or soldaderas, of the Mexican Revolution in the early 20th century and contemporary narratives like “La Adelita.” Teams traditionally consist of 16 women, with eight competing at a time for a maximum of eight minutes. Carrying out elaborately choreographed dances in vibrant, traditional, handmade Mexican dresses, escaramuzas ride sidesaddle and are judged on their synchronicity, precision, garments, and elegance.
“When the Cowgirl Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, approached me about creating a photo exhibition on the escaramuza tradition, I knew very little about it other than the beauty of the dresses and elegant performance aspect of it,” Jaeggi says. “As I started researching, I was captivated by the history of the tradition, the gender dynamics within charrería, how those are evolving, and the stories of the contemporary riders I spoke to.”
The oral histories of the women she met form the foundation for Jaeggi’s ongoing series, Escaramuza, the Poetics of Home, which is on view now at the Poetry Foundation in Chicago. “I wasn’t initially sure how, but I knew I needed to bring their voices back into the work somehow,” the artist says.

Jaeggi chronicled teams in Illinois, Colorado, Texas, Washington, Idaho, Georgia, California, Oregon, Iowa, and Arizona, interviewing riders as she went. During the journey, she met two poets, ire’ne lara silva and Angelina Sáenz, whose poems accompany the images and take inspiration from the women’s stories.
“Poetry felt like a good way to really emphasize some of the strong themes that came out of my conversations with the riders, and Angelina and ire’ne were in a good position to understand and relate to the cultural background of these women,” Jaeggi says.
Escaramuza, the Poetics of Home centers portraits of Mexican-American women in full regalia, highlighting colorful, coordinated dresses and their iconic wide-brimmed sombreros. Jaeggi portrays empowered, strong, and resilient individuals who balance numerous responsibilities. “A lot of the women I met are full time students or have full time jobs—sometimes multiple jobs—and are raising children,” Jaeggi says.

The sport is also dangerous. Competitors perform intense and complicated maneuvers, criss-crossing one another at high speed, which riding side-saddle makes even more challenging because the person only has control of one side of the horse.
“There is a narrative around immigration and the role it plays in the development of the sport in the U.S.,” Jaeggi says, sharing that as she spoke to these women, learning about their work and lives, many shared experiences of “not feeling Mexican enough when traveling to Mexico but not feeling American enough at home either.” And as a gendered event governed by strict charrería rules, many experience frustration at the rigidity of the dress code they’re required to adhere to, which is not the case for male charros.
