The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge is coming out at the end of the month as one of the first slim phones in the world, and we’re excited to see how people will react to holding a phone that’s nearly as thin as a piece of paper.
However, it’s competing against its thick Apple rival, the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
As we settle into the middle of 2025, it’s survival of the fittest — or should we say, “thinnest”? — and the two phones are competing over who weighs less and how much can deliver more to their users regardless of their size.

The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge is as thin as its name suggests, if the exact dimensions listed in the spec chart above are anything to go by.
Leaked images have shown the S25 Edge to have a thin frame around the handset and two vertically-aligned cameras on top of the slight camera bump — a detail that is noticeably absent from the rest of the Galaxy S25 lineup.
They have also shown the phone to have a microphone on the top and bottom, and a side button beneath the volume button on the right edge of the frame.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 Pro Max is a bit thicker at 8.25mm, with a titanium frame with a brushed metal finish, flat edges, and a matte glass back that make it easier to grip the phone.
It has a triple-lens camera layout similar to that of the iPhone 15 Pro Max, and a Camera Control button dug into the right side of the frame underneath the power button, which sticks out like the other buttons sitting on the left edge.
Aside from the thickness (or lack thereof), we’re waiting to see if the S25 Edge comes out looking the way they do in the leaks.
For now, the iPhone 16 Pro Max takes the trophy in the design category.

The Galaxy S25 Edge is rumored to have a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a peak brightness of 2,600 nits, a variable refresh rate up to 120Hz, and a 3120 x 1440 QHD+ resolution, which will allow users to access their photos, videos, files, social media, games and more at a lightning-fast pace.
The quick access will also be helped by the fact that the S25 Edge’s screen will take after the S25 Plus and S25 Ultra and support Dynamic AMOLED 2X and ProScaler, greatly enhancing photo and video quality.
The display on the iPhone 16 Pro Max is 0.2 inches bigger than the S25 Edge, given that it sits at the high-end of the iPhone 16 lineup.
It has a 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with ProMotion and always-on tech, gives off a 2868 x 1320 resolution and a maximum of 2,000 nits, and has an adaptive refresh rate of 120Hz, same as the S25 Edge.
Though both phones have the smoothest refresh rate, the iPhone 16 Pro Max may be too big for some people to hold because of how large the screen is compared to the S25 Edge — and the iPhone 16 Plus, for that matter, as its display measures the same.
You might find an easier time gripping the S25 Edge because its display is smaller.
You’ll have an even better time viewing videos and photos, as well as playing games, with the higher resolution and the quality bump from ProScaler.

Visual quality and performance go hand-in-hand, and no tech company knows that better than Samsung and Apple.
But since the Galaxy S25 Edge comes out in a week, we’ll talk about its performance stats first.
This phone runs 12GB of RAM whether you pick the 256GB or the 512GB version, and they house the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite, which relies on multi-core performance and has eight CPU cores and an Adreno GPU, which runs everyday tasks as smooth as silk.
If you have a tendency to have intense gaming sessions on your phone, you’ll be happy to know that the Galaxy S25 Edge has a vapor chamber and new thermal interface material (TIM) to prevent the phone from overheating — and burning your hands — while playing anything on Xbox Game Pass.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 Pro Max operates on the A18 Pro processor, which makes everything run fast and smooth for how little memory it has — 8GB of RAM.
You can play resource-heavy games on this phone, but because it has only one CPU core, it will overheat pretty quickly if you play on your phone in a hot environment or use a case that doesn’t allow it to cool down as fast as it heats up.
That makes the iPhone 16 Pro Max well suited for those who will only use it for light tasks like web surfing, taking pictures and videos, and texting.
But for people who want to do more on their phone without breaking a sweat, gaming included, the Galaxy S25 Edge is the way to go.

The Galaxy S25 Edge has a 3,900mAh battery, which is slightly smaller than the batteries in the rest of the Galaxy S25 lineup, where the base model has a 4,000mAh battery and the S25 Ultra has a 5,000mAh battery.
Samsung claims that the S25 Edge supports 25W wired charging, 15W wireless charging and reverse wireless charging.
However, Samsung didn’t exactly mention how fast the phone would charge when it’s plugged in.
The iPhone 16 Pro Max, on the other hand, has an even bigger battery with 4,685mAh of power capacity.
It supports 30W fast charging, reaching 50% charge in 30 minutes or less.
It also supports 25W MagSafe wireless charging, 15W Qi2 wireless charging, and 4.5W reverse wireless charging.
This shows that a bigger battery doesn’t always mean faster charging, it just means it takes little longer to get to full charge.
Although, it is tough to call which phone has the best battery and charging time since they’re close is size and capacity, and the speed in which in the S25 Edge reaches a full charge, let alone a half charge, has not been determined.

Despite the Galaxy S25 Edge having two rear cameras, its main camera has a 200-megapixel lens sitting atop the 12MP ultrawide camera.
The latter camera is quite a significant downgrade from the 48MP ultrawide camera found on the S25 Ultra, but that’s only because there aren’t any other cameras aside from the main one to compensate for it.
However, the 200MP camera would provide for high-quality photos and videos, considering how well it captured every detail on the S25 Ultra.
The iPhone 16 Pro Max, meanwhile, has a 48MP Fusion camera, a 48MP ultrawide camera, and a 12MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom, balancing out the visual quality of every picture and video it captures.
The ultrawide camera provides a 120-degree field-of-view for landscaping and group photos, while the 12MP telephoto helps to capture the tiniest objects up close and personal when zoomed in, like small insects and leaf cells.
The 48MP camera ensures every photo and video is crystal clear.
We don’t know how well the cameras on the S25 Edge will pan out, so the iPhone 16 Pro Max gets the photo finish — for now.

The Galaxy S25 Edge will operate on Android 15 out of the box, with Samsung’s One UI 7 layered on top of it.
The combined software guarantees enhanced privacy features, improved multitasking, and AI capabilities like Gemini.
Just like the other phones in the Galaxy S25 line, Samsung has promised seven years of OS and security updates for the S25 Edge.
As for the iPhone 16 Pro Max, it runs on iOS 18 out of the box, but it can be updated to the latest version.
Basically, iOS 18 comes with Apple Intelligence, which will summarize your emails, text messages, social media notifications, and help improve your writing by providing grammar and spelling checks to ensure you get your point across to anyone you’re talking to with poise.
There’s also an advanced Siri that lights an iridescent ring around the display when you say its name.
Apple didn’t say how many years of OS and security updates the phone would get, as it updates the OS for months at a time.

At launch, the Galaxy S25 Edge will be sold at $1,099 for the 256GB variant, and $1,199 for the 512GB version.
As for what colors it will be sold in, it will come in Titanium Icyblue, Titanium Silver, and Titanium Jetblack.
No, the first and third colors are definitely not typos.
The iPhone 16 Pro Max has been on the market since September 2024, and its price depends on how much storage space you need.
The 256GB variant costs about $1,199, while the 512GB version costs $1,399, and the 1TB variant costs $1,599.
It comes in Black Titanium, White Titanium, Natural Titanium, and Desert Titanium.

Although our review has yet to be published, the Galaxy S25 Edge appears to be winning this battle.
It’s easier for big hands to hold for how slim it is, camera design justifies the overall design of the phone, and the performance it delivers is highly optimal, especially for gamers.
Its thinness may make it look fragile, but it has a titanium frame around its circumference and is the first smartphone to have the Gorilla Glass Corning 2 on glass screen, offering the phone double the protection from cracks and scratches if it falls.
Plus, the S25 Edge is a little more affordable than the iPhone 16 Pro Max, which could be helpful information for people who need a new phone but don’t want to break the bank for an Apple phone.
They say great things come in small packages.

Humphrey AI tool powers Scottish Parliament consultation
AI-powered Consult tool has helped the Scottish Parliament to organise feedback from a public consultation into themes

The government has said a new tool called Consult, based on its artificial intelligence (AI)-based suite Humphrey, has been used to analyse a recent consultation from the Scottish Parliament looking at regulation for non-surgical cosmetic procedures.
The trial has the potential to save the government a significant amount of admin time and cost in the analysis of feedback from experts and members of the general public in response to policy proposals.
The trial used the AI tool for analysing comments from experts and the public.
According to the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), using AI to process consultation responses has the potential to save officials 75,000 days of manual analysis every year, which costs £20m in staffing costs.DSIT said Consult was able to summarise what the public had told the government in response to a consultation for the first time – providing nearly identical results to the manual work officials tasked with analysing public consultations.
Reviewing comments from more than 2,000 consultation responses using generative AI, Consult identified key themes from the feedback across each of six qualitative questions.
The themes were checked and refined by experts in the Scottish government, then Consult was used to categories individual responses by theme.
DSIT said this gave officials more time to examine the details of the responses and evaluate the policy implications of feedback received.
As this was the first time Consult was used on a live consultation, experts at the Scottish government manually reviewed every response.
The trial found that when looking to the work of a human reviewing the consultation feedback responses manually compared to Consult, differences in reviewers’ interpretation of the comments received had a negligible impact on how themes were ranked overall.
Commenting on the trial, technology secretary Peter Kyle said: “After demonstrating such promising results, Humphrey will help us cut the costs of governing and make it easier to collect and comprehensively review what experts and the public are telling us on a range of crucial issues.
“The Scottish government has taken a bold first step.
Very soon, I’ll be using Consult, within Humphrey, in my own department and others in Whitehall will be using it too – speeding up our work to deliver the Plan for Change.”
Consult is part of the Humphrey bundle of AI tools designed to speed up the work of civil servants and cut back time spent on admin, and money spent on contractors and forms part of the government’s plan to make better use of technology across public services, in a bid to target the £45bn in productivity savings.
Feedback from officials who worked with Consult from the Scottish government on this first live test included comments such as “pleasantly surprised”, while others said it provided a “useful starting point” in the initial analysis.
According to DSIT, the feedback from the people who worked on the trial consultation suggests that Consult can reduce human biases, which makes the analysis of feedback more consistent.
The government plans to use Consult on major consultations without officials manually reviewing every response individually.
However, DSIT said officials will always review the themes and how responses are sorted into them through an interactive dashboard that will allow them to filter and search for insights.

Most 15-inch laptops come with a 16:10 resolution, which might feel more "natural" for some, but ultimately the distinction is subtle.  Kyle Kucharski/ZDNETWith 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD, Asus is able to keep costs close to that $1,000 price point with just the right amount of hardware on this machine.

In testing the CPU's performance, I got a single-core score of 106 and a multi-core score of 969.
In Geekbench, I got a single-core of 2447 and a multi-core of 14384. Remember that these scores were recorded while the device was plugged into power.
While on battery, I got scores about 30% lower -- somewhat more of a difference than I expected.
This is in comparison to the HP Omnibook X 14, which had a much narrower gap in scores in my testing, something I noted as I was reviewing it. Also: I replaced my laptop with Microsoft's 12-inch Surface Pro - here's my buying advice a week laterThis paints a picture of a laptop that has somewhat variable battery life, depending on what you're doing and what kind of mode you have the laptop in.
There's no escaping the power this display requires, and if you're someone who typically ignores battery setting profiles and keeps your machine blasting at "Best Performance," you may want to adjust the power modes in either the MyAsus software or in Windows (or both) because you'll see a drastic difference. That being said, the Vivobook S 15's 70Wh battery performance is good, but the user must manage it to maximize its efficiency.
During the battery test that ZDNET runs on all laptops, I got about 10 and a half hours before it died, but that number fluctuated in subsequent tests with different power mode settings. Also: Are dual-screen Windows laptop a gimmick or pure genius? My buying advice after testing oneOptimization is the theme here, and this also extends to its performance.
The Windows on ARM architecture provides fantastic up-front performance in ways that are immediately apparent to most users.
But when you start looking closely at more specialized tasks, things have the potential to get tricky. For example, the Vivobook S 15's aforementioned 16:9 resolution OLED screen seems perfect for editing video.
While the integrated Qualcomm Adreno GPU is up to the task, its interaction with different apps and their performance in Windows (via Prism) is still a work in progress.  Kyle Kucharski/ZDNETDuring my testing, I ran DaVinci Resolve for Windows on ARM, and it worked mostly fine, but the performance is still not 100% optimized.
There was some lag, graphic stuttering, and quirkiness, especially with 4K video.
Adobe Photoshop, however, ran smoothly, with local AI-generative tasks popping off seamlessly with help from the NPU on board the Snapdragon.
I expect performance to continue improving as Windows improves and developers improve their products for the platform.The other elephant in the room is gaming, which is not entirely up to speed with Windows on ARM.
Yes, technically, you can game on this laptop, but many titles still don't run, and the ones that do are not well-optimized.
Although the Vivobook S 15 looks like something you might want to game on, I wouldn't recommend it as a dedicated gaming laptop.
At least not yet. Also: This Asus laptop is my go-to pick for creative professionals and design teams - here's whyInstead, I see the Vivobook S 15 as a primary driver for remote workers or digital nomads who are already integrating AI into their workflows and appreciate an aesthetic laptop with a brilliant display that handles media well.
Supporting that use case, it has a generous selection of ports: two USB-A ports on the right-hand side, two USB-C on the left, an HDMI port, a MicroSD slot, and a headphone jack. It also has a "full" keyboard (the number pad on the right side has slightly smaller keys, as typical for sub-16-inch machines), which is satisfying and responsive to typing on.
The keyboard has colorful LED backlighting that can be configured in many different lights and effects.
Still, again, this is not something that I would consider high on the priority list when optimizing battery life.

Hyper-converged infrastructure pioneer Nutanix is among a number of suppliers that smell blood in the water when it comes to VMware and its customers following the virtualisation giant’s acquisition by Broadcom.
At Nutanix’s annual .Next bash in Washington DC last week, migration away from VMware and to – it hopes – its own Acropolis hypervisor (AHV) was a constant theme.
As part of this, it gathered three customers to talk about their experiences of moving from VMware to Nutanix. 
Of these, only one was directly attributable to Broadcom’s licensing changes, but Broadcom-Amazon Web Services (AWS) relations were key to another.
We asked them about their journey to Nutanix and away from VMware, as well as the precise pain points that prompted their decisions.
Here, we talk to:
Dom Johnston, IT manager for Golding in Brisbane, Australia, which is a heavy civil and mining contracting company that has operated on the east coast of Australia for about 75 years. 
Kee Yew Wei, associate vice-president for infrastructure and operations at MSIG, which is a Japan-headquartered insurance company that operates internationally. 
Mike Taylor, hospital ship joint task director for Military Sealift Command and the US Navy, which operates two hospital ships, Mercy (pictured above) and Comfort.

We had a three-year contract with VMware for that platform, which ended in February this year.
About March of last year, there was a fairly public divorce between VMware and AWS.
We weren’t sure where that left us. 
To cut a long story short, with what we saw over the next two to three months from there, we considered the risk of leaving our infrastructure there beyond the end of that three-year contract was too great for us.

So we went out to market to look at alternatives.
And Nutanix has kind of swung in to essentially replace that.
We use NC2 [Nutanix Cloud Clusters] to run our production workloads in AWS, for our DR [disaster recovery] capability, and that’s essentially to directly replace the functionality that existed within AWS and VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery, which was the DR product that sat alongside that. 
So essentially, our DR strategy is that if an event occurs, we immediately spin up the DR environment ready to accept a workload.
In the event that is not required, it’s spun back down again, and we’ve lost, you know, a couple 100 bucks worth of compute usage. 
Kee Yew Wei: Our journey with Nutanix is from 2017.
We were looking for a hyper-converged system to simplify our environment, to do away with the traditional three-tier legacy system, to simplify our environment, and to reduce our datacentre footprint. 
Nutanix is the system, but we didn’t have full confidence in Acropolis at that time, because it was quite new compared to VMware. 
After a couple of years using Nutanix, we built confidence, so we have recently migrated all our VMware to Nutanix AHV.
We completed the full migration last month. 
All this came about after the acquisition by Broadcom, and we received a quotation with a 300% to 400% increase on our renewal pricing.
So, then we made the decision to go for Nutanix. 
We started planning somewhere around Q3 last year and were quite conservative, with completion planned for maybe somewhere in Q2 this year.
My team migrated 1,000 to 2,000 VMs [virtual machines] from Q4 and completed that at the beginning of April.
So today, we are a full Nutanix house.
Mike Taylor: Our story with Nutanix started way back in 2017.
We’d been Nutanix lookers for a long time. 
On my ships, we had 1,000 blade servers and EMC tiered storage taking up multiple racks.
But on the ships, there’s only a finite amount of power they generate, so I needed to find a way to bring everything down into a smaller footprint – but a smarter, smaller footprint, something that would allow me to very elegantly manage and have ease of use that my teams aboard the ships could deal with. 
After a couple of years using Nutanix, we built confidence, so we have recently migrated all our VMware to Nutanix AHV

So, we did a bake-off with Dell, Cisco and Nutanix, and we implemented Nutanix on Mercy in 2019 and Comfort in 2020.
Now, we’re looking at generational refreshes of all of our equipment and probably expanding from there and getting some new features, with redundancy and disaster recovery.
We do have an onboard continuity-of-operations rack, so we have mirrored failover clusters of Nutanix aboard the ships. 
Now we’re all Nutanix.
Everything moved over.
That’s like, out of 80-something servers, we only had two or three servers that had hiccups. 
Taylor: I remember standing in my main datacentre on the hospital ships.
It’s very anticlimactic if you ever get to go; I just have five racks, but two of those five were purely just to run my server infrastructure.
I remember standing there with one of my peers, and we were looking at it and we said, “Oh, hey, we’re still using SAN directors.” And SAN was going away, they were on their way out. 
Dell had come out with stuff like FX, and other people were dabbling with hyper-converged, whereas Nutanix had already done it, and they had their own software, which was easy to understand for my engineers.
So, I’m looking at these racks full of equipment, especially the VNX, which was power hungry.
So, we said, “There has to be a better way to do this.” Energy was the problem.
Energy was the driver to finding a solution. 
We weren’t impacted by the Broadcom event.
We got in before it.
I do still run some VMware, so I am impacted by it there.
The challenge we have incurred in continuing to operate that small part isn’t financial.
It’s purely that I can’t get to updates.
I can’t get to download them.
It’s support aspects of the change that impact us the most, not the financial part of it. 
If we hadn’t moved to Nutanix, if we were still purely ESXi, the financial part would certainly be a burden, like it is for other military commands. 
Johnston: After AWS and VMware had their thing, we were notified by VMware that we were no longer able to spin up our on-demand DR cluster.
They told us that, essentially, we could still use our DR plan if we powered down our production cluster before spinning up a DR cluster.
We were testing quarterly, but we were no longer able to do that.
In fact, we shifted to testing monthly because there was so much uncertainty in that space.
We were left in a situation where, because we couldn’t test, we had zero confidence. 
Kee Yew Wei: It was all about cost.
We got a bill with a 300% to 400% increase on our last renewal.
So, this is one of the key factors that drove us to migrate all our workloads to Nutanix.
Taylor: The trade-offs are very, very light, if any.
My people were very seasoned with ESXi VMware Tools and the orchestration that VMware had. 
But the learning curve for Nutanix is very short.
It’s very easy to pick up, but you have to learn it.
There’s a different way to import an OVA, as opposed to the way you do it within the VMware ecosystem, for example.
So, the trade-off is really just time to become a master at using the system with regard to functionality.

In fact, I think I have enhanced capability using AHV as my hypervisor.
When it comes to security, using VMware with the military, we have to submit vulnerability scans constantly.
That’s just part of our regular drumbeat.
I still run VMware on classified parts of my network, and it is very challenging to keep it secure and up to date.
I don’t have that issue with Nutanix.
Johnson: I second that.
As far as trade-offs are concerned, or the functionality, it’s really just a question of semantics in relation to the differences between the two platforms.
The way that Nutanix handles snapshots is different to the way that VMware handles snapshots.
That was a learning curve for us.
It’s like going from Windows 10 to Windows 11.
Things are in a different spot, but it’s the same functionality. 
You need to prepare your team, get them training, show them what to do.
I don’t think there’s any loss of functionality.
In fact, I think there are faster workflows, better availability of tools. 
Kee Yew Wei: I don’t see trade-offs.
Maybe 10 years ago, compatibility with other suppliers’ software might have been an issue, like backup solutions such as [Veritas] NetBackup.
Maybe seven or eight years ago, they did not support Nutanix.
But that’s not the case today.

Identifying the exact location of a software issue—such as a bug or feature request—remains one of the most labor-intensive tasks in the development lifecycle.
Despite advances in automated patch generation and code assistants, the process of pinpointing where in the codebase a change is needed often consumes more time than determining how to fix it.
Agent-based approaches powered by large language models (LLMs) have made headway by simulating developer workflows through iterative tool use and reasoning.
However, these systems are typically slow, brittle, and expensive to operate, especially when built on closed-source models.
In parallel, existing code retrieval models—while faster—are not optimized for the verbosity and behavioral focus of real-world issue descriptions.
This misalignment between natural language inputs and code search capability presents a fundamental challenge for scalable automated debugging.
SWERank — A Practical Framework for Precise Localization
To address these limitations, Salesforce AI has introduced SWERank, a lightweight and effective retrieve-and-rerank framework tailored for software issue localization.
SWERank is designed to bridge the gap between efficiency and precision by reframing localization as a code ranking task.
The framework consists of two key components:
SWERankEmbed, a bi-encoder retrieval model that encodes GitHub issues and code snippets into a shared embedding space for efficient similarity-based retrieval.
SWERankLLM, a listwise reranker built on instruction-tuned LLMs that refines the ranking of retrieved candidates using contextual understanding.
To train this system, the research team curated SWELOC, a large-scale dataset extracted from public GitHub repositories, linking real-world issue reports with corresponding code changes.
SWELOC introduces contrastive training examples using consistency filtering and hard-negative mining to ensure data quality and relevance.
Architecture and Methodological Contributions
At its core, SWERank follows a two-stage pipeline.
First, SWERankEmbed maps a given issue description and candidate functions into dense vector representations.
Using a contrastive InfoNCE loss, the retriever is trained to increase the similarity between an issue and its true associated function while reducing its similarity to unrelated code snippets.
Notably, the model benefits from carefully mined hard negatives—code functions that are semantically similar but not relevant—which improve the model’s discriminative capability.
The reranking stage leverages SWERankLLM, a listwise LLM-based reranker that processes an issue description along with top-k code candidates and generates a ranked list where the relevant code appears at the top.
Importantly, the training objective is adapted to settings where only the true positive is known.
The model is trained to output the identifier of the relevant code snippet, maintaining compatibility with listwise inference while simplifying the supervision process.
Together, these components allow SWERank to offer high performance without requiring multiple rounds of interaction or costly agent orchestration.
Insights
Evaluations on SWE-Bench-Lite and LocBench—two standard benchmarks for software localization—demonstrate that SWERank achieves state-of-the-art results across file, module, and function levels.
On SWE-Bench-Lite, SWERankEmbed-Large (7B) attained a function-level accuracy@10 of 82.12%, outperforming even LocAgent running with Claude-3.5.
When coupled with SWERankLLM-Large (32B), performance further improved to 88.69%, establishing a new benchmark for this task.
In addition to performance gains, SWERank offers substantial cost benefits.
Compared to Claude-powered agents, which average around $0.66 per example, SWERankLLM’s inference cost is $0.011 for the 7B model and $0.015 for the 32B variant—delivering up to 6x better accuracy-to-cost ratio.
Moreover, the 137M parameter SWERankEmbed-Small model achieves competitive results, demonstrating the framework’s scalability and efficiency even on lightweight architectures.
Beyond benchmark performance, experiments also show that SWELOC data improves a broad class of embedding and reranking models.
Models pre-trained for general-purpose retrieval exhibited significant accuracy gains when fine-tuned with SWELOC, validating its utility as a training resource for issue localization tasks.
Conclusion
SWERank introduces a compelling alternative to traditional agent-based localization approaches by modeling software issue localization as a ranking problem.
Through its retrieve-and-rerank architecture, SWERank delivers state-of-the-art accuracy while maintaining low inference cost and minimal latency.
The accompanying SWELOC dataset provides a high-quality training foundation, enabling robust generalization across various codebases and issue types.
By decoupling localization from agentic multi-step reasoning and grounding it in efficient neural retrieval, Salesforce AI demonstrates that practical, scalable solutions for debugging and code maintenance are not only possible—but well within reach using open-source tools.
SWERank sets a new bar for accuracy, efficiency, and deployability in automated software engineering.

In addition, PlayStation has possibly leaked the date for the next Helldivers 2 major update, and it’s less than a week away.

As spotted by OP, xTekshi, on the Helldivers subreddit, an official PlayStation account for the Czech Republic possibly leaked the date for the next Helldivers 2 major update.
The OP claims to be from the Czech Republic themselves, and they have translated the message that was included in the post.
The seemingly deleted PlayStation post said, “Super Earth is in danger.
All Helldivers must report to their Hellpods immediately.
The battle for humanity itself is about to begin! The big “Heart of Democracy” update is coming on May 20”.
This is by no means official, even though it reportedly came from an official PlayStation account.
The post was also shared by prominent Helldivers 2 leaker, Iron_S1ghts, but, again, it’s still not official as of writing.
If the leaked date is accurate, then we only have less than a week to wait for the new update to drop.
Right now, Super Earth soldiers are tasked with thinning the forces of the Illuminate, but the unfortunate news is that the three planets are “doomed to fall”: Widow’s Harbor, Pilen V, and New Haven.
We will just have to wait and see if the update drops as leaked, but, before then, don’t forget the next Warbond, Masters of Ceremony, comes out on May 15th.

Brace yourself, my fellow Android-appreciating amigos: By this time next week, we’re gonna be positively drowning in all things AI.
All right — to be fair, we already are fairly suffocated by the scent of generative AI (genAI) these days.
But with Google’s annual I/O developers’ conference kickin’ off this coming Tuesday, a whole new wave of over-the-top promises is about to hit hard.
At this point, in fact, signs suggest the conference — which traditionally has featured Android and other associated areas as key parts of its keynote — will revolve mostly around Gemini and (a) breathless hype around feats the generative AI technology can theoretically achieve along with (b) demos of things the system can actually do but with ample factual errors and counterproductive inconsistencies (that conveniently won’t be mentioned as part of the conversation).
For those of us still living in a land where accuracy matters — and if you’re using any of this stuff for professional purposes in particular, my goodness, I hope you’re among us — all this genAI gobbledygook should be interesting mostly just from a limited, carefully controlled perspective that doesn’t exactly jibe with how tech companies are fighting to framing it.
The real meaningful progress here in the Android arena comes down to two key areas that have nothing to do with Gemini or any of the high-profile generative-AI ballyhoo we’ll be hearing about incessantly in the days ahead.
If you’re relying on Android for your professional and/or personal life, these are the areas worth watching.

1.
Stronger Android security
It may not always be the sexiest subject around, but it’s hard to argue with the fact that Android security is one of the most important parts of the platform in front of us.
And this year, amidst all the Gemini and genAI jibber-jabber, El Googeroo’s cookin’ up some significant improvements around Android security that’ll bring a big boost to our devices’ defenses.
Now, for my standard caveat: Android security is far less scary than most headlines make it out to be.
The operating system has long sported numerous layers of built-in protection, and the odds of encountering anything truly troubling in the real world are shockingly slim.
(Consider: When’s the last time you or anyone you knew had a run-in with any of that nasty “Android malware” we’re always hearing about?) Generally speaking, you’ve really gotta go out of your way — and/or exhibit a complete lack of common sense — to see a serious problem.
Even so, extra security can obviously only be a good thing, for business and casual use alike.
And as we speak, Google’s sautéing up a slew o’ new security measures that’ll soon be sliding into our lives — including:
A new Advanced Protection Mode that enables the most secure possible settings across the operating system itself as well as system-level apps and even third-party apps with a single simple switch
An Android Intrusion Detection system that creates an encrypted, locally stored log of system actions and network activity and allows you to search it for potential weak points if you spot any signs of suspicious activity
An elevated in-call scam detection option that seeks out signs of someone trying to trick you into sharing sensitive info (including banking access) and stops you before it’s too late
A beefier on-device scam protection setup for sensing and warning you about all sorts of scams within messages, with privately and entirely local on-device processing
Stronger protections around the factory reset and remote lock processes as well as one-time password access
More extensive ongoing scans of already-installed apps to safeguard against any deceptive behavior
A security-minded auto-restart system that automatically restarts a device — thus re-encrypting all of its data and requiring a password to unlock and get into anything — anytime it’s been inactive for three consecutive days
And expanded access to an Identity Check option that requires biometric authentication to change any sensitive system security settings
Some of these elements may be included in the upcoming Android 16 update, while others could show up separately via smaller subsequent rollouts.
(Google sometimes even sends these sorts of improvements out through under-the-hood updates to Play-Store-housed Android system elements, which means they reach every device worldwide at the same time — without any reliance on notoriously unreliable device-makers to do the lifting.
That happened just recently, in fact, with a new improvement that automatically revokes permissions for any apps that are deemed to be dangerous.)
However and whenever they reach us, though, they’re all actively in the works and headed our way.
And they’re all excellent illustrations of why, even outside of any more apparent surface-level considerations, Android system upgrades absolutely do matter and should always be a key consideration in any device-buying decision.
2.
Smarter Android efficiency
Aside from the important but not exactly visible under-the-hood enhancements, Google’s got a trio of truly tantalizing twists under development for Android — and they’re all things you’ll absolutely notice and almost certainly appreciate.
First and most exciting for me, personally, is the advent of a platform-wide dock-style taskbar that could completely reimagine how we multitask and get around our devices.
It’s seemingly the same concept introduced with the first Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet and available in a limited capacity, in certain large-screen environments, already.
If you’ve ever used a computer of any kind, it’ll immediately feel familiar.

That’s it — the bar at the bottom of the screen.
But mundane as it may seem, man alive, lemme tell ya: It makes a world of difference in your day-to-day Android experience.
That bar, which in its current form can either be summoned on demand with a special swipe gesture or set to remain visible at all times, makes it as easy as can be to pull up any app, anytime — without having to first galumph back to your home screen and wade around to find it.
You can hop instantly to any app you’ve got set as a favorite, swiftly switch to any app you’ve used recently, or access your entire app drawer on demand right then and there, even, with just one more tap.
Maybe even more interesting yet is the way the taskbar puts Android’s long-out-of-sight and oft-forgotten screen-splitting system front and center for the first time in — well, ever.
Just press and hold any icon in the taskbar and drag it up into the main screen area, and…poof: You’ve got both apps visible together.

I’ve been begging Google to bring this same smart setup to all Android environments, regardless of their screen size, since we first saw the thing in action a couple years back.
(You can technically force it to happen on any Android device, incidentally, but it requires some crafty configuring and awkward compromises.) Now, it looks like the company’s listening and we’ll likely see this one in front of us everywhere before long, even if the development hasn’t officially been announced just yet.
If that isn’t enough, signs suggest Google’s also cookin’ up a new native Android Desktop Mode that’d let you plug a phone into an external monitor — with a keyboard and mouse connected — and use it like an actual computer.
You’d see a fully functional desktop-style interface on the monitor while your phone remains in its standard usable state.
It’s similar to systems certain Android device-makers are already offering, but as a native feature built into Android itself, it’d be more broadly available, standardized, and also actively (and consistently) developed and supported.
Again, this one isn’t yet official, but it’s plainly being developed out in the open and where anyone can see it.
Last but not least, a rather bold new design change is now officially comin’ our way — one that brings bulky elements, bright colors, and all sorts of wacky fonts into Android’s exterior.
Like any interface evolution, it’s bound to be divisive.
(To wit: I asked readers of my Android Intelligence newsletter what they thought about the look last Friday, following an early leak of the info.
As of this writing, 17% say they hate it, 14% say they love it, and everyone else falls somewhere in the middle.)
Google, for its part, is convinced the updated visuals will result in an easier-to-use, more efficient Android interface — with “time to tap on key actions decrease[d] by seconds” compared to the current approach.
Only time will tell if that holds true for all of us, but combined with all the other incoming elements we just went over, it doesn’t seem like a stretch to say that the Android experience we know and love is on the brink of a near-total reinvention.
And despite the all-consuming AI focus we’re certain to see at Google I/O next week, none of this has anything to do with Gemini.
