Labubu’s Creator on the Ugly-Cute Sensation That’s Taken Over the World

Labubus have captivated the world under a spell of mischievous fantasy that is making the plush purse baubles a must-have collector’s toy.
And if you’re a Jim Henson creature fan (think Labyrinth and Dark Crystal) or grew up on Where the Wild Things Are with a dash of Donnie Darko’s Frank the Bunny, you’ll find them hard to resist.
Much like the lucky spirits of forest folklore that inspired them, Labubus are everywhere all at once and yet hard to find if you’re trying to buy one.
Pop Mart, which distributes artist Kasing Lung’s beloved characters in vinyl and plush collectible form, releases drops that immediately sell out.
Cutesy toy collectors are often having to turn to re-sellers at a steeper mark-up than the $20-30 the keychains usually go for, with prices often reaching hundreds of dollars for elusive variants.
And while Pop Mart encourages fans to shop through official outlets, many fall for the trap of the Lafufus—faux Labubus, many of which are so cursed-looking, with eyes that fall out or bald peeled heads, they’ve garnered their own cult following as well.
“The Monsters,” as the series that spawned Labubu is called, continue to gain global recognition through popularity in the fantasy cottagecore realms of the internet.
Labubu is the breakout species of the Monsters crew; the main character is also named Labubu and became the standout of the group thanks to the extreme ugly-cute quality that made her a viral sensation.
Other characters in the Smurf-like tribe of Labubu include the rare pink Mokoko and the Labubu leader Zimomo (who has a tail), who also have a cult following of their own.

io9’s conversation with Labubu figure creator Kasing Lung, conducted over email, delves into how Nordic supernatural folklore inspired the fuzzy elven creatures.
Also—as fans ourselves, often awake at all hours of the night trying to nab an official Labubu on the Pop Mart app—we were excited to explore with Lung why he thinks the Monsters’ enchanting whimsy has taken over the world.
Sabina Graves, io9: I’ve read that the creation of the Monsters was inspired by your time in the Netherlands when you were young.
What about that experience inspired the Monsters story book idea, and how did that shift to making them into a physical art form? Kasing Lung: That’s right—Labubu was born from my fascination with Nordic mythology and European folklore, which I was surrounded by while growing up in the Netherlands.
I’ve always been drawn to creatures that live in the space between fantasy and reality—figures that are both familiar and mysterious.
I wanted to create a character that embodied that duality: mischievous yet endearing, strange yet deeply human.
Labubu, like all the characters in the Monsters universe, has an emotional depth that makes her feel alive.
When I partnered with Pop Mart, I was able to bring that imagination into the physical world—transforming Labubu from a storybook figure into something people could collect, connect with, and make their own.
io9: What makes Pop Mart the ideal collaborator to share the Monsters with the world? Were you a part of collector culture growing up, and if so, what toys did you collect? Lung: Pop Mart’s design-forward philosophy makes them an ideal collaborator for any artist.
They prioritize artistic integrity and allow creators like me the freedom to develop characters without compromise.
That kind of trust is rare.
It means every figure stays true to its roots—from concept to final collectible—and collectors can feel that authenticity in every piece.
As for collecting, yes—I have always been interested in that world.
I was drawn to toys that sparked imagination, whether it was action figures, miniature creatures, or things with unexpected personality.
I think that fascination with small, expressive objects has stayed with me.
The Monsters are really just a grown-up extension of that childlike wonder.

What do you think about the current fashion craze that the Monsters are a part of?
Lung: Seeing Labubu embraced by fans worldwide, from dedicated collectors to global icons, is surreal and incredibly humbling.
When I first started sketching Labubu, I wasn’t thinking about fame or fashion trends.
I was just following a feeling, creating something that felt true to me.
So to now see people lining up for drops, customizing their collections, and making Labubu part of their daily lives—it’s overwhelming in the best way.
What’s happening in fashion feels like a natural evolution.
Today, people want to wear their personalities, to show the world who they are through what they carry, collect, and wear.
Labubu speaks to that desire for something playful, expressive, and a little bit rebellious.
The fact that the Monsters are becoming part of that cultural language means the world to me.
It pushes me to keep expanding the universe, to keep creating characters that surprise people and give them something they can connect with—emotionally and personally.
io9: What are your plans to continue to expand the stories for the Monsters characters alongside the figures release? Are there any collaborations and projects related to them coming up that you can share that will open up their story to more fans around the world?
Lung: Right now, I’m letting the Monsters story evolve naturally.
These characters are always growing in my mind, and every new figure is a chance to explore a different side of their world.
I never want to force their direction—it’s more about following the emotion behind them and letting that guide the creative process.
In terms of collaborations, there are definitely exciting projects in the works.
Most recently, we collaborated with One Piece for the Monsters × One Piece Series Figures.
While I can’t reveal too much just yet, I’m always looking for opportunities to expand the Monsters into new mediums and formats, so fans can experience them in deeper and more immersive ways.

FX announces release dates for three of 2025’s most anticipated TV shows

FX has announced the release dates for three of its most anticipated shows of 2025: The Bear season 4, Alien: Earth, and The Lowdown.
Chaos returns to the kitchen in The Bear season 4, which premieres on Wednesday, June 25.
All 10 episodes will stream on Hulu at 8 p.m.
ET/5 p.m.
PT.
The series streams on Disney+ internationally.

Fallout renewed for season 3 but has ‘season 6 type of endpoint’
Get ready for more Wasteland adventures because Prime Video’s Fallout has already been renewed for season 3. The news arrives months before the show’s December season 2 premiere, which is set to explore New Vegas. Prime Video said in a press release on Monday, that season 2 of Fallout “will pick up in the aftermath of Season One’s epic finale and take audiences along for a journey through the wasteland of the Mojave to the post-apocalyptic city of New Vegas.” So, to all the Fallout: New Vegas purists out there — worry not, Prime Video sees you. As for season 3, no further details have been shared regarding where the story will take viewers or what characters from the video game universe will make their debut. While we wait for season 2 and pray that season 3 maintains the series’ high bar, there appear to be plans to keep this series going well beyond that. During an interview at Comic Con Liverpool, Aaron Moten, the actor who plays former Brotherhood of Steel soldier Maximus, opened up about where Lucy and friends could take us. “When I signed on to do the series, we would have a starting point and they gave me the endpoint,” Moten said. “And that endpoint hasn’t changed. But it is season 5, [season] 6 type of endpoint. We’ve always known that we were gonna take our time with the development of the characters.” Now, let’s be real, Fallout has to nail seasons 2 and 3 before we can even think about seasons 5 or 6. Amazon renews Fallout months before season 2's premiere

The second season of the Fallout TV series doesn't even have a concrete release date in December yet, but Amazon has already renewed the show for a third season. Amazon has announced that it has greenlit the new season at its annual presentation in New York City. The company said Fallout has had more than 100 million viewers since it dropped on Prime Video in April 2024 and remains one of its top-three most watched titles ever. If you'll recall, the live adaptation was so well-received, Fallout 4 enjoyed a resurgence in sales nearly a decade after its release. Amazon also renewed the series for a second season just a few days after the first season debuted on its streaming service. Based on the video game franchise of the same name, Fallout is set 200 years into the future after an apocalyptic event. In the story, the humans who survived the apocalypse hid in luxury fallout shelters where their descendants remained for hundreds of years. The show follows Lucy as she leaves her shelter after an attack by outsiders to find her father who'd been kidnapped. Along the way, she meets more characters, including a squire from the Brotherhood of Steel and a ghoul bounty hunter. Amazon has yet to reveal season 3's story, which doesn't come as a surprise, seeing as the second season has yet to drop. One last trailer for From the World of John Wick: Ballerina.

We're about three weeks out from the theatrical release of From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas.
So naturally Lionsgate has released one final trailer to whet audience appetites for what promises to be a fiery, action-packed addition to the hugely successful franchise.
(Some spoilers for 2019's John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum.)
Chronologically, Ballerina takes place during the events of John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum.
As previously reported, Parabellum found Wick declared excommunicado from the High Table for killing crime lord Santino D'Antonio on the grounds of the Continental.
On the run with a bounty on his head, he makes his way to the headquarters of the Ruska Roma crime syndicate, led by the Director (Anjelica Huston).
The Director also trains young girls to be ballerina-assassins, and one young ballerina (played by Unity Phelan) is shown rehearsing in the scene.
That dancer, Eve Macarro, is the main character in Ballerina, now played by de Armas.
Huston returns as the Director, Ian McShane is back as Winston, and Lance Reddick makes one final (posthumous) appearance as the Continental concierge, Charon.
New cast members include Gabriel Byrne as the main villain, the Chancellor, who turns an entire town against Eve; Sharon Duncan-Brewster as Nogi, Eve's mentor; Norman Reedus as Daniel Pine; and Catalina Sandino Moreno and David Castaneda in as-yet-undisclosed roles.
The first trailer was released last September and focused heavily on Eve's backstory: Having been orphaned, she chose to train with the Ruska Roma in hopes of avenging her father's brutal death.
Wick only made a brief appearance, but he had more screen time in the second trailer, released in March, in which the pair face off in an atmospheric wintry landscape.
This final trailer opens with Eve looking up while directly in Wick's crosshairs.
Much of the ensuing footage isn't new, but it does show de Armas to her best deadly advantage as she takes on combatant after combatant in true John Wick style.
Her vow: "This isn't done until they're dead."

It is also outfitted with sophisticated communications capability to allow the president to securely run the country from the plane and protect him from cyberattacks."It's designed to transport the president in a safe way and be able to withstand physical attacks, but to also ensure that the president maintains communication with military, his cabinet, other government leaders in a safe and secure manner," said John Cohen, an ABC News contributor and former acting Homeland Security official. "Any building or vehicle or airplane that the president is located is a high-value target for foreign intelligence services who want to gather as much information about the president."Air Force One can also remain in the air for several days due to its ability to refuel in midair. "From an intelligence perspective, it's not the brightest move."Blocker cited that when the U.S. embassy was being built in Moscow in the 1980s, the U.S. had to "take it down to its bare bones" because the Russians "put bugs through every room, every facility.""I think the people of Troy, when they accepted that horse, regretted it after the fact also," he said.The complexity and time needed to retrofit and inspect the plane raise questions on cost and a timeline."Even under the best of circumstances, it's going to take a significant effort for the military to be satisfied that the aircraft is constructed safely, that it's not compromised from the standpoint of intelligence collection capabilities being planted on it, and that it is built in a way that it will be able to assimilate the sensitive communications and countermeasure capabilities that are that are present on any plane that's Air Force One," Cohen said. Spotify is turning up the volume on personalization with a new feature that lets Premium users make real-time music requests using just their voice.
The music streamer has officially launched DJ requests, an interactive update to its AI-powered DJ feature, now available in over 60 markets worldwide.According to Spotify, this upgrade comes in response to growing user demand for more control and interactivity during listening sessions.
Now, instead of passively enjoying a curated mix created by AI, listeners can shape the vibe on the fly, asking for anything from a specific genre or artist to a soundtrack that fits their current mood or activity.How DJ requests workTo try it out, Premium users can simply go to the Search tab in the Spotify app and type in "DJ." After pressing play, the AI DJ kicks off a personalized mix complete with commentary.
When it's time to switch things up, users can press and hold the DJ button in the lower right corner until a beep sounds.
That’s the cue to speak a request, such as:"Play me some electronic beats for a midday run.""Surprise me with some indie tracks I’ve never heard before.""Play modern country songs for my cowboy era.""Play something chill for a rainy afternoon.""Give me K-pop hits with strong choreography vibes." Spotify’s AI DJ now takes requests

The music streamer has officially launched DJ requests, an interactive update to its AI-powered DJ feature, now available in over 60 markets worldwide.According to Spotify, this upgrade comes in response to growing user demand for more control and interactivity during listening sessions. Now, instead of passively enjoying a curated mix created by AI, listeners can shape the vibe on the fly, asking for anything from a specific genre or artist to a soundtrack that fits their current mood or activity.How DJ requests workTo try it out, Premium users can simply go to the Search tab in the Spotify app and type in "DJ." After pressing play, the AI DJ kicks off a personalized mix complete with commentary. When it's time to switch things up, users can press and hold the DJ button in the lower right corner until a beep sounds. That’s the cue to speak a request, such as:"Play me some electronic beats for a midday run.""Surprise me with some indie tracks I’ve never heard before.""Play modern country songs for my cowboy era.""Play something chill for a rainy afternoon.""Give me K-pop hits with strong choreography vibes."
