It’s been a long road for Star Trek: Prodigy, getting from there (Paramount+) to here (Netflix). But, perhaps fitting for a show so engaged as a spiritual sequel to Star Trek: Voyager, that journey homeward bound might need to keep going on for a bit longer: it’s emerged this week that the animated series is starting to run out of time before it needs a new savior. This week it was confirmed that Netflix—who saved Prodigy from being completely scrubbed off streaming services last year, after Paramount abruptly pulled the plug on the show during the production of its greenlit second season—is about to lose the streaming rights for Prodigy‘s first season next month, with rights for the second season set to expire at the very end of 2025, on December 31. “While the future removal of Star Trek: Prodigy on Netflix is disconcerting, it has little to do with lack of viewership or anything nefarious,” Kevin and Dan Hageman, Prodigy‘s showrunners, said in part in a post on social media about the licensing rights.. “We hold out hope someone will pick it up. The next generation of Trek fans deserve it.” Although the Hagemans dance around it, the lack of news about a potential third season of Prodigy since the sophomore’s debut on Netflix last year, paired with the news about the series’ licensing renewal, doesn’t paint an optimistic picture for the series’ future beyond simply finding a place for the current seasons to stream online. But at least this time fans don’t have to worry as they did when Paramount first tried to scrub the show offline, leaving certain episodes unable to watch at all: Prodigy season two got a physical release on Blu-ray and DVD last year, so even if the show is beamed off of Netflix without renewal in the coming months, at least the series will remain accessible in a more reliable form. Capcom Vs. SNK 2 – a good old fashioned brawl (Capcom) The latest in Capcom’s series of retro fighting game compilations focuses on Capcom Vs. SNK and GameCentral favourite Power Stone. Every time we talk to anyone from Capcom, no matter what the subject is, we always ask about a new sequel to Power Stone. We’ve been doing it for over a decade now, mostly just to annoy them, but now, finally, the series has returned. We don’t know how many other people are excited about that fact – probably not many, given the length of the franchise’s absence – but we couldn’t be happier. At the same time, it can be a depressing jolt of reality when you return to a game after many years, with memories of its greatness, and realise that time has not been kind to it. Power Stone, and some of the other games in this collection, are over a quarter of a century old but, to our relief, they’re still highly enjoyable today, with that classic Capcom combination of swagger and cheesy exuberance. In fact, it’s remarkable just how well Capcom fighting games tend to endure, as evidenced by the previously released Capcom Fighting Collection and Marvel Vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics. A cynical mind might accuse this third title of starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel but that’s not fair, as while these games might not be as well known they’re every bit as interesting as Capcom’s more famous headliners. Although it contained a number of unrelated titles, the main focus of the first Capcom Fighting Collection was the Darkstalkers series, with all five original arcade games included. There’s a less clear-cut theme for this one, but the most high-profile inclusions (if you’re a Power Stone philistine) are probably the two Capcom Vs. SNK games. There is something that connects all but one of the games though and that’s that all of them were also ported to the Dreamcast, as everything but Capcom Fighting Evolution was released in a narrow window between 1998 and 2001. That matches up exactly with the life and death of Sega’s last console, of which Capcom was one of the most prolific supporters. That creates a slight problem though, in that all these versions of the games are based on the original coin-ops – which the majority of people will never have played – and not the more familiar Dreamcast editions. That’s a real shame, because a lot of ancillary options have been lost in the process, particularly for something like Power Stone 2, which had an additional Adventure mode involving unlocking extra weapons and items. That’s not to suggest this is a lazy compilation though; like the previous ones it’s anything but. It’s just unfortunately the emphasis is solely on the arcade versions. As such, you get both the English and Japanese versions of each game, plus museum content, in-game achievements, and brand new online options including casual, ranked, and custom matches. Each game also has a new training mode, where the button presses are indicated on-screen; you can pause and restart the single-player modes at any time; and there’s a ton of controller and difficultly level options, including the chance for one button specials. There’s alternative sound mixes too, plenty of screen filter options, and they even bothered to scan in the original arcade marquee cards, that explained how the games work. We’ll go through the games in chronological order, which starts with 3D fighter Plasma Sword: Nightmare Of Bilstein. Probably the most obscure title in the collection, it’s known as Star Gladiator 2 in Japan and is essentially a sci-fi take on Soulcalibur, completely with faux lightsabers. It also shares a lot of DNA with Street Fighter EX but even in 1998 it was considered a generic outing, with sub-par graphics. Although it’s still miles better than contemporary Star Wars: Masters Of Teräs Käs. Power Stone doesn’t necessarily look that great in screenshots (Capcom) The first Power Stone was released in 1999 and we strongly feel it’s one of the most underappreciated fighting games of all time, especially when it comes to the use of 3D space. Instead of just sidling round your opponent you have full freedom of movement in a small 3D arena, using objects, walls, and architecture to increase your attack options, as well as picking up weapons and the titular power stones. Collect all of the latter and you briefly transform into a powered-up form, similar to the Infinity Gem gimmick from Marvel Super Heroes. The downside to this is that there are no real combos, except doing the same attack multiple times, and a very limited number of special moves, but that’s not really the point. What the game loses in technical complexity it gains in terms of tactical intrigue, as you use the stage, and your opponents’ desire to get to a weapon or power stone before you, to your advantage. Admittedly, it’s still not exactly a deep game but the foundation was there to build it into something more complex. As it was though, Capcom went in the opposite direction for Power Stone 2 and while there were a few clones at the time, such as Shrek SuperSlam, the concept sadly just faded away. Which is a real shame because we’ve always felt it would make the perfect template for a new Super Smash Bros., especially after Ultimate left the series with nowhere else to go. 2000’s Power Stone 2 takes the same concept and rather than trying to deepen the combat it turns the crazy up to 11. The four-player brawls occur over larger stages, which often transform during battle, and there’s a much larger range of weapons, as well turrets and even moving vehicles to take control of. With four people who know what they’re doing (which the AI often does not) it’s glorious chaos but unfortunately that’s as far as the concept ever went. If you want a more technical fighter then you need look no further than Capcom Vs. SNK: Millennium Fight 2000 Pro, the first of several crossovers created with publishing rival SNK. SNK made a bunch of Card Fighters Clash games, plus a fighter for the Neo Geo Pocket, and the disappointing SNK Vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos, but it’s Capcom’s two games which are considered the best thing to come out of the team-up. Despite the name, the only non-Street Fighter character from Capcom is Morrigan, while SNK’s line-up is based on The King Of Fighters (which itself is a crossover of various SNK franchises, such as Fatal Fury). You can choose attack meters derived from either Street Fighter Alpha or The King of Fighters ’98, although there were other modes and features in the Dreamcast version. Project Justice, aka Rival Schools 2, is another relative obscurity, at least in the West, but is arguably Capcom’s best 3D fighter (in the non-Power Stone sense of the concept). It’s a 3v3 team fighter but while there’s a lot more depth and complexity to the combat than Plasma Sword it still comes across as a little late to the party, compared to something like Tekken – which had been around for six years at this point. The lone Street Fighter game in the collection is Street Fighter Alpha 3 Upper, which is a bit of a random pick but a very well regarded entry and the last in the Alpha sub-series of prequel titles. The pixel graphics are great and the introduction of the different ‘-ism’ fighting styles went on to have quite an impact on Capcom fighting games in general. Power Stone aside, Capcom Vs. SNK 2: Mark Of The Millennium 2001 is the star of the collection, with a much larger selection of characters than the original, although the number of non-Street Fighter characters is still frustratingly small. More Trending The system for selecting your team is one of the biggest gameplay changes, with a ratio system that limits the selection according to the character’s power and not just how many fighters there are – which, again, went on to influence many future games. 2004’s Capcom Fighting Evolution (aka Capcom Fighting Jam) is the most recent entry in the collection but easily the least interesting. It’s a very half-hearted crossover fighter, featuring characters from Street Fighter, Darkstalkers, and Red Earth. It barely even scratches the surface of the Capcom Vs. Capcom game that fans have long yearned for, with sprites stolen from Capcom Vs. SNK 2 – except with simplified animation and a lot of missing moves. Despite the odd dud game, all of these fighting collections have been great and while it does depend to a degree on how much nostalgia you have for the titles, most of them are significant in some way – and we’d dearly like to see new entries in the Power Stone and Capcom Vs. SNK series. The missing Dreamcast versions are a real shame but even without that Capcom Fighting Collection 2 is a fascinating and sensibly priced compilation, that has clearly been produced with a lot of love and effort. Capcom Fighting Collection 2 review summary In Short: Another excellent compilation of forgotten Capcom fighters, with the revival of Power Stone and Capcom Vs. SNK being especially welcome – even if it’s a shame these aren’t the Dreamcast versions. Pros: Almost all the games are interesting and enjoyable, while the range of new options, including fully featured online, training modes, and difficulty and display options are top notch. Cons: It’s a real shame that the Dreamcast versions aren’t included, as they had a lot of extra content and modes. Capcom Fighting Evolution is rubbish. Under the second Trump administration, there is one group of people getting expedited access to refugee status and resettlement in the US. It’s not citizens of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where 6.1 million people have been internally displaced due to decades of fighting among armed groups and widespread gender-based violence. The US is not currently accepting more DRC citizens as refugees under President Donald Trump.It’s not Afghan citizens either, despite the continued human rights violations, especially against women and girls, perpetrated by the Taliban after the US withdrawal from the country in 2021. Instead, the Trump administration is now revoking temporary protections for many Afghans already in America, which could result in their deportation back to Afghanistan.And it’s not the Sudanese people, of whom nearly 8.6 million have been internally displaced amid a conflict between military and paramilitary forces.A subset of white South Africans, known as Afrikaners, are the only people Trump has newly admitted to the US as refugees. Trump has described them, without evidence, as victims of a “genocide that’s taking place” and anti-white discrimination, echoing rhetoric that has long circulated on the far right. And he’s sought to punish South Africa for that by cutting off US aid. (The US government will have to admit some refugees from other countries who were already in the resettlement pipeline before Trump took office, per a court order issued in late March after the president tried to suspend almost all refugee admissions. But that court-ordered acceptance is a sharp contrast from the administration’s enthusiastic outreach to Afrikaners.) Trump’s effort to label Afrikaners “refugees” is based on dubious pretenses. The South African government and even some white South Africans argue that, after the end of the apartheid system, which supported white minority rule in South Africa until the early 1990s, white people remain a privileged class. The typical Black household has 5 percent of the wealth of the typical white household. And police data does not show that Afrikaners, many of whom are farmers, suffer from disproportionate levels of violence that would amount to genocide. As a small minority of the population, white people still own a majority of the country’s land. This feels like a real kick in the gut. There is no substance to the claim that Afrikaners as a group have been persecuted. These are not refugees by any stretch of the imagination. They are people who simply do not want to live under majority-Black rule.Some of them will talk about crime. I come from a family of small business owners who have suffered because of crime. If anything, it’s poor people who bear the brunt of South Africa’s crime problem — and it is a serious problem.In his executive order granting refugee status to white Afrikaners, Trump referenced the South African government’s recent land reform bill, which he claims allows the seizure of “ethnic minority Afrikaners’ agricultural property without compensation” and is “fueling disproportionate violence against racially disfavored landowners.” Does that square with the reality in South Africa?The very first piece of legislation that Nelson Mandela signed into law when he became president in May of 1994 was a land reform bill whose job was to correct what is essentially South Africa’s original political sin, and that was the taking away of land from indigenous peoples and allocating it to white South Africans for exclusive ownership. For the past 30 years, the government has actually failed spectacularly on that front. That failure helps explain why today, in May 2025, whites still own more than 70 percent of farmland in South Africa. [Editor’s note: Only 7 percent of the country’s population is white.]In fact, as white farmers themselves have been pointing out ever since Trump announced his plans to do this, no single white farmer has had land taken away from him, and there is no suggestion that that’s going to change anytime soon.Do you think Trump’s policy is evidence of Elon Musk’s influence in this administration?Musk is not the only South African who’s got Trump’s ear. There’s a whole cohort of white men who grew up, for some of their lives, under apartheid in South Africa. That is significant.The mistake that the media in the US has been making has been to focus on Musk and to assume that it all radiates from him to Trump. In fact, there’s this whole cohort of white men who have yet to come to terms with democracy in South Africa, meaning that a poor Black person who has no prospects in life has as much say politically when it comes to elections as does a very rich white person. That’s what it comes down to.They’ve lost their power, which is not the same thing as privilege. For example, it’s still the case that when you look at corporate South Africa, 62.1 percent of corporate leaders are white, and most of those are men. Only 17.2 percent are so-called Black African. And that is 30 years since the advent of democracy.What do Trump’s policies mean for the South African government?They’re in for four years of hell with Trump. But it is also, I’m hoping, a wake-up call for the current [African National Congress] government to take South Africa’s poor much more seriously. The incompetence and the corruption of the past 30 years have, in some ways, pushed the ANC off the higher moral ground that it occupied when Mandela was president. Trump’s decision to treat the chief beneficiaries of apartheid as victims of a genocide taking place only in his head gives the ANC a chance to get back on that moral high ground by reminding the world just how criminal apartheid was.The single biggest mistake that the ANC made at the moment of transition in 1994 was to assume that all that you needed to do to correct the injustices of apartheid was to create a Black capitalist class. All that this did was create this massive patronage system that had government contracts at its center. This made the Black bourgeoisie dependent on government business and encouraged corruption. Looking back over the last 30 years, we can see that thinking that you could use government contracts to create a Black business class was just a terrible idea. Ironically, the ANC copied the idea from successive apartheid governments, which used government patronage to build an Afrikaner business class. There is not a single Afrikaner [billionaire in US dollars] in South Africa today who did not get their start on the back of apartheid government contracts.Corruption is endemic, and it’s a huge problem. Of course, the thing about corruption in South Africa that we forget is that it’s non-racial, it cuts across racial lines. Because you need these cross-cultural and racial networks to move money around, to launder money. It’s a national enterprise.Who has suffered because of the incompetence and the corruption? It’s all South Africans, especially the poor. White Afrikaners as a group have not suffered exclusively. How should we think about Trump’s decision to welcome white Afrikaners as refugees in the context of his gutting of US refugee admissions broadly?It is bitterly ironic that he has stopped the processing of refugee applications for everyone except this group of privileged white South Africans. Marco Rubio kicked out South Africa’s ambassador to the US for pointing out the basis of Trump’s animus toward South Africa, but there is no mistaking the white supremacist underpinnings of this. There is no mistaking the crude racism at the heart of this. You have here an administration that has and is punishing people who really need all the help they can get, who are coming here or are here for better opportunities for their kids and for themselves, but it will stop at nothing to take this very privileged group of white South Africans and turn them into refugees, when, in fact, they’re anything but refugees.I grew up under apartheid. My mother went to her grave without having voted in the country of her birth. I grew up fighting the system. I now find myself in 2025 having to relitigate whether apartheid was wrong. That is what this amounts to: taking people who benefited and continue to benefit from this awful system called apartheid and turning them into victims and refugees. But whatever is happening with his Grok AI right now is something else entirely. In fact, Grok seems to be obsessed with so-called “white genocide,” a far-right conspiracy theory, and anything you ask it to fact check seems to generate garbage about South African farmers supposedly being murdered for their race. First spotted by New York Times investigations journalist Aric Toler, Gizmodo was able to confirm this bizarre glitch was happening with our own experiment Wednesday. We searched Musk’s social media platform X for the term “puppy” and saw a very innocuous tweet from Brian Stack, a comedy writer on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. “Happy #NationalPetDay to and from Holly, seen here a few months ago with razor-sharp puppy teeth,” Stack wrote in a tweet from 2024. Naturally, the tweet included a photo of Stack’s adorable puppy. We replied to that tweet with “@grok is this true?” and its response was indeed about white genocide in South Africa. @BrianStack153 The claim of a "white genocide" in South Africa is highly contested. Some sources, like AfriForum, report high farm murder rates—over 4,000 since 1994—suggesting white farmers are disproportionately targeted. The conspiracy theory often places the blame for this non-existent genocide on Jews, a people who did in fact experience a genocide at the hands of the Nazis. Why is Grok doing this? That part is unclear, but if we had to guess, it probably has something to do with Elon Musk’s recent tweets. The billionaire, who was born in South Africa, quote-tweeted an account that claimed to show a road in the African nation with white crosses, each representing a white person who’s been killed. Musk’s tweet has received 43 million views at the time of this writing. The claim isn’t true, because the crosses don’t just represent white people and instead represent people of all races who are farmers. And the top question to that tweet tags Grok with the words “fact check.” The AI responded: The Witkruis Monument’s crosses honor farm attack victims of all races, not just white farmers as claimed. From 2010 to August 2023, there were 4,308 farm attacks and 806 murders, but these are part of South Africa’s broader crime issue, with over 19,000 murders in 2019. Racial motivations are debated—some cite historical tensions, while the government attributes attacks to general crime. Persecution claims for white South Africans are complex. The government denies systematic targeting, noting their economic privilege, but some feel threatened. The US granted asylum to 54 white Afrikaners in 2025, citing discrimination, though this is contested. Many white South Africans don’t feel persecuted and see asylum offers as unnecessary. Grok has previously fact-checked Musk about white genocide, as it did a couple of months ago. “The legacy media never mentions white genocide in South Africa, because it doesn’t fit their narrative that whites can be victims,” Musk wrote on March 24. Grok fact-checked the tweet and said that no trustworthy sources back up Musk’s claims. The X user who first asked Grok the question back in March followed up today asking if anything had changed, and Grok wrote, “no credible evidence supports it.” Musk, as you may recall, is a fan of Nazi-style salutes, which may help explain his emotional investment in the concept of a white genocide. The idea of white genocide against farmers in South Africa has been percolating in U.S. culture this week, since President Donald Trump’s administration declared Afrikaners as “refugees” and flew them to the U.S. Trump signed an executive order based on the conspiracy theory, and the first batch of white South Africans landed in the U.S. on Monday, according to the New York Times. We also tried responding “is this true” to the Dril candles tweet, one of the most iconic posts in social media history. We were excited to finally learn whether Dril actually paid $3,600 for candles. “The budgeting scenario in @dril’s post is not true; it’s satire meant to humorously exaggerate spending, like $3,600 on candles, which is unrealistic for most,” Grok responded. “It comments on consumer behavior, prioritizing non-essentials over needs, and has become a popular meme with over 59,000 retweets. Your query likely tests if I can spot the joke, and I can confirm it’s not a real budget but a comedic take.” It seems very likely that other X users have asked Grok about this tweet before, given its popularity, so that may explain why it provided a response that had nothing to do with South Africa. Asking Grok about a recent article from Time magazine also gave a normal response. But we don’t know what’s happening. Even on its best days, AI can be a black box and spout nonsense. As Aric Toler’s thread shows, Grok is completely obsessed with white genocide today. X didn’t respond to questions emailed on Wednesday. Gizmodo will update this article if we hear back. Elon Musk's AI chatbot, Grok, has gone absolutely bonkers and is flooding X-formerly-Twitter with bizarre posts about "white genocide" in response to completely unrelated tweets.The issue was flagged online by Aric Toler, a visual investigative journalist for The New York Times, and first reported by Gizmodo.Ask Grok abut anything, it seems — HBO Max's latest name change, messages from the new Pope Leo XIV, the MLB, and much more — and the bot will respond with multi-sentence missives about allegations of white genocide in South Africa and references to "Kill the Boer," an anti-Apartheid song decried by far-right groups in South Africa.According to recent reporting by The New York Times, South African police data and other metrics don't support claims of genocide. The allegations have been widely contested as white supremacist propaganda. But allegations of white genocide in South Africa are rampant among white supremacist circles — and are notably a concern of Grok's Dr. Frankenstein, Elon Musk. A white South African himself, Musk has promoted the belief that descendants of European colonizers living in South Africa, known as Afrikaners, are being murdered for being white and denied land ownership due to racial discrimination.The timing of Grok's descent into madness is certainly interesting. Earlier this week, the White House fast-tracked the admission of white South Africans to the US on refugee status over Black and Afghan refugees, including many who had previously been approved to enter the country.And now, it seems that alleged white genocide in South Africa is top of mind for Grok, which can't stop babbling about it.Take this exchange between one confused X user and Grok, in which the user asks the chatbot to review an adorable video of a tiny, spotted piglet showing off her blankets."@grok analysis," tweeted the user."The topic of white genocide in South Africa is highly contentious," reads Grok's lengthy, completely irrelevant retort. And yet, Grok dives into the subject as if the user requested it, repeatedly mentioning "Kill the Boer" and debating genocide claims."I'm sorry, but I cannot validate the claim against the drafted bill as the query does not specify which bill or claim to address," reads the Grok response. "The context mentions 'Kill the Boer' and white genocide in South Africa, but no specific legislation is referenced. Please provide details about the bill or claim for a precise response. The old school action movie hero, like the old school movie star, is a dying breed. Tom Cruise is acutely aware of this since pretty much all of his franchised efforts in the 2020s have been about the glories of the fading old days and ways. Top Gun: Maverick, for example, explained why we still needed Cruise up on that wall, protecting us with one piece of superb blockbuster cinema at a time. But in the interim between Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning and this month’s long anticipated Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, even the rare company he keeps on those ramparts has shrunk. Indiana Jones is again retired (and presumably for good after the box office receipts for Dial of Destiny came in); and not only has James Bond died onscreen with the last of the Daniel Craig movies, but perhaps off as well since the franchise’s “one at a time” bespoke family business model was consigned to the dustbin of movie history. Still, there remains Cruise and his handful of beloved onscreen personas, who are only too cognizant of how lonely they are high up on their barricade against the rising tide. And it appears to at last be getting to them in Final Reckoning, the allegedly last Mission: Impossible movie that feels the weight of the world on its shoulders, and a lot less of the deft spontaneity that previously made this franchise among the best in the Hollywood canon. Just to clear, there is yet quite a bit to enjoy in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, our eighth and most interconnected adventure with Cruise’s Ethan Hunt to date. Ever since filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie took over the directorial duties of the franchise beginning in 2015’s Rogue Nation, and even beforehand as a writer via Ghost Protocol, the series has widely been recognized for its creative ingenuity, emotional intelligence, and of course eye-popping spectacle and stunt work wherein Cruise channels his inner Buster Keaton or Douglas Fairbanks by putting his life on the line for our amusement. Those elements stay at play in Final Reckoning, but there is just a lot less playfulness to it in a film that ostensibly asks us to treat its story as a grand finale to Ethan Hunt’s impact on cinema—even as the film simultaneously and awkwardly resists that impulse. Less of a full-stop for the series than a trailing off question mark, Final Reckoning fights against itself and the notion of closing the book or bidding farewell to almost anything, especially Cruise, which makes its ever-growing bombast as much of a hindrance as help in this reluctant swan song. From the opening recap of his assignment, wherein Ethan receives the choice to accept or decline his mission via an appropriately ‘90s VHS cassette tape, Final Reckoning is intent on celebrating the past while turning the screws of self-importance in the present. Consider that this time Ethan’s mission brief is delivered not only by a familiar voice, but the newly elected President of the United States (Angela Bassett’s welcome return as Erika Sloane). The former CIA director turned commander-in-chief is heard pleading with Ethan to come in and deliver the cruciform key from the last movie, which is the secret to unlocking the source code to a world-ending AI threat called the Entity. Yes, despite the title change, Final Reckoning is very much Dead Reckoning Part 2, albeit now with the stakes clearly having been tinkered with off-screen. In the last movie, the Entity represented the abstract but insidious threat of AI and the internet itself, with a sentient algorithm commandeering the power to shape truth and our perceptions of reality. Well, in Final Reckoning, it has apparently decided to go full Skynet. President Sloane reveals the evil AI has corrupted the hydrogen bomb capabilities of most of the nuclear powers in the world, and within three days will have the ability to destroy all life on Earth for no discernible reason. However, should Ethan go rogue and attempt to turn off the Entity without surrendering control over the AI’s source code back to the American government, it could kill the internet and plummet the world into an economic dark age. It’s grim, technologically complex stuff, but in practice is actually incredibly simple. The world will literally end if either the Entity or any government gets its way. So it is all up to Ethan Hunt and his beloved team—which consists here of Luther (Ving Rhames), Benji (Simon Pegg), and recent additions Grace (Hayley Atwell) and Paris (Pom Klementieff)—to save the world via some spectacularly unsafe looking stunts and poker-faced brinksmanship. Ethan indeed has to enter into multiple staring contests with various admirals, generals, and presidents when they dare question whether he really is the smartest guy in the room. The fools. However, for all the press about this being the most expensive Mission ever made, Final Reckoning is arguably more intimate in scale than the last couple of entries. There is plenty of globe-trotting, but other than a jaw-dropping climax involving two biplanes that wouldn’t have looked out of place in 1933’s Flying Down to Rio, and the long teased underwater sequence in which Ethan discovers the wrecked SevastopolTop Gun territory. As in Maverick, Cruise once again has steely tete-a-tetes with various naval officers on what appears to be the real frigid waters of the Bering Sea. This unfortunately undercuts a bit of the travelogue fun of so many spy movies, including the previous Dead Reckoning which was at its best when Cruise and Atwell got to flirt in Rome while smashing a banana-colored Fiat along the Spanish Steps, or Cruise and the missed-but-not-forgotten Rebecca Ferguson simply smoldered in the Arabian deserts outside Dubai while trashing an army of NPCs. In an attempt to reach for the rhapsody of other blockbuster swan songs like The Dark Knight Rises or No Time to Die, Final Reckoning foregoes the lighter touch and mischievousness that made Fallout and Rogue Nation such all-time crowdpleasers. Yet McQuarrie’s play-it-by-ear looseness and story structure clashes with the dour-faced histrionics of Final Reckoning’s setup, particularly during the film’s multiple exposition dumps where characters spew utter nonsense about what the Entity wants at each other, or what to do about what remains one of the worst villains in the franchise, Esai Morales’ exhausting Gabriel. He’s back, and his cackling dastardliness is louder than ever. It also still feels beneath the amount of emotional trauma the film wishes to credit him with inflicting on Ethan. This remains a Tom Cruise stunt spectacular that for the most part maintains McQuarrie’s uncanny ear for sharp, knowingly grandiloquent dialogue and clever shorthand characterization. When Cruise and McQ are focused on the smaller beats, like the interplay between Ethan and a team of deep sea divers, or the endlessly endearing bickering between teammates like Benji and Luther, it never ceases to charm. Grace and Paris likewise prove worthy permanent additions to the team. The chemistry between Atwell and Cruise during one arctic sequence is particularly giddy. Furthermore, there is a wonderful callback to the first Mission: Impossible that I will not spoil here, but it’s better than any simple cameo or easter egg. It retroactively adds McQuarrie’s humanist optimism from these later movies to De Palma’s ‘90s era cheeky chic. And did I mention that IMAX biplane sequence that’s all over the trailers and posters? It really cannot be oversold. It’s only when the sum of these sequences are compared to the taller heights the franchise has recently scaled, particularly in Fallout, which Final Reckoning not so covertly attempts to remake during the third act, that it’s left a little wanting. The film might be marketed as the final Mission: Impossible Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning opens on Friday, May 23. In 1901, a kid from Ohio named Harry Gerstner had had enough of high school and dropped out. He then started a four-year woodworking apprenticeship and trained to become a patternmaker.About a year into his patternmaking job, Gerstner became dissatisfied with the then-current state of tool storage. Tool chests existed, but they were exactly that—literal chests, which were large, heavy, and needed to be fished through to find the tool you wanted. During his evenings and weekends, Gerstner began developing a solution that would better suit him.He came up with a small chest of drawers that was much better-suited to hold the smaller, delicate tools used by patternmakers. Wrapped in leather, with brass fittings to protect the corners and a handle on top, it was durable and easy to move around the benchtop. The small drawers of gradated size made it easy to store and retrieve hand tools.Gerstner's co-workers took note of his invention, and he soon realized there was nothing else like it on the market. He shortly stopped working as a patternmaker and was soon running H. Gerstner & Sons, a business developed to manufacture and sell his toolchests. (Fun fact and early marketing spin: Gerstner had no sons, but three daughters. He named his new company to provide the illusion of history.)Gerstner's chests proved popular, and the design eventually evolved into what we today call a machinist's chest. Machinists became the de facto target market, as the chests were perfect for storing their calipers, gauge blocks and precision tools. The front of the case has a protective cover that slides down to reveal a felt-lined surface on which to temporarily place small parts or tools. Drawers can be pulled out and carried to the work. The diamond-shaped mirror is a bit of a curiosity; I'd heard that they were supposedly included in case the machinist got something stuck in their eye, while others have dismissed that as hogwash. This forum poster claims he reached out to the company (which still exists today) to inquire about the mirror's purpose, and received the following response:"The mirror was first installed in the early 1900's on some of the very earliest Gerstner chest designs. In those days, very few manufacturing and/or tool & die companies had indoor plumbing. In other words, there were few companies with lavatories (with wash basins and mirrors) for toolmakers and other factory workers to use to clean up at the end of the day."The 'mirror' mounted inside a Gerstner tool chest provided the wherewithal for the chest owner to check his appearance and comb his hair before heading home (or, perhaps, going in to ask the boss for a raise). At various times over the years, we have introduced a few tool chests without including a mirror. Interestingly enough, the feedback from customers has been, 'Without a mirror, the chest doesn't look like a Gerstner.' Today, they still sell a model, the Classic Chest, that is remarkably close to the 20th-century design. (The most notable difference is that the single top handle has been replaced by two side handles.) It's available in the original Oak as well as fancier woods like Walnut and Cherry. However, the prices of the Classic today is $1,695. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has the median salary of a machinist today at $56,150, which would make a week's wages about $1,080. That doesn't place the chest completely out of reach of a machinist, but I'm guessing today's customers are more likely filling the drawers with knife collections and RC car parts.
