• A Projector that Borrows from the Rubik's Cube
    www.core77.com
Here's an interesting way to solve a problem with form. Your typical projector comes with adjustable feet or an adjustable stand in order for you to select the appropriate angle of projection. But this PlayCube Projector, by Chinese manufacturer TCL, borrows from a certain popular puzzle to provide angle adjustments: "Inspired by the Rubik's Cube, TCL PlayCube Projector has a unique rotating mechanism, bringing fun to home and outdoor use. Its compact cube design delivers 750 ISO lumen high-quality projection, with flexible angle adjustments through a patented rotation, requiring no external stand." This seems like one of those ideas that looked great at the napkin stage. I imagine in real life it would be fiddly to use; the rotating mechanism needs to be "sticky" enough to hold its position, yet smooth enough to allow for fine adjustments. TCL says the PlayCube will hit the market later this year, though they've yet to announce pricing.

  • New Lightweight British EVs Blur Line Between Footwear/Automotive Design
    www.core77.com
A British startup called Longbow Motors, formed by ex-Tesla and -Lucid employees, aims to create lightweight EVs that harken back to traditional British sports cars. They've unveiled two of their designs, a no-windshield Speedster and a fixed-roof Roadster, that seem to blur the line between footwear design and automotive design: Longbow calls these aluminum-framed designs "an entirely new species: the Featherweight Electric Vehicle (FEV)." The company is obsessed with making the cars as lightweight as possible, and claim the Speedster will be 895 kg (1,973 lbs), the Roadster 995 kg (2,193 lbs). "Adding lightness is the open secret to true speed not just in a straight line, but in every nuance of motion. Weight invites complexity, blunts agility and dulls the senses." "Speed, agility and safety are inseparable each shaped by the artistry of lightweight engineering."With 0-62 mph figures in the mid-3-second range for both cars, Longbow hopes the vehicles will deliver "nimble agility and near-weightless poise, evoking the effortless thrill that defined Britain's most legendary sports cars." Both vehicles are projected to have a range around 275 miles. The Speedster is expected to retail for 84,995 (USD $110,009) , while the Roadster is a bit easier on the wallet at 64,995 (USD $84,123). Longbow says the hand-built cars will be on the market next year.

  • Dual-Screen Journal Concept Bridges Memories and Connections for Elderly Users
    www.yankodesign.com
The golden years often bring unique challenges in maintaining meaningful connections with loved ones, especially when physical distance separates families. As aging progresses, memory concerns can further complicate these relationships, creating communication barriers that leave elderly individuals feeling isolated. Traditional memory-keeping methods like photo albums and handwritten journals have served generations well, but they lack the immediacy and connectivity that todays world demands. While smartphones and tablets offer connectivity, their interfaces often intimidate older users who didnt grow up with digital technology.A new dual-screen journal concept aims to address these challenges by combining the familiar comfort of handwritten journaling with modern digital sharing capabilities, potentially revolutionizing how seniors document and share their life experiences. This dual-screen device bridges this gap by mimicking the physical experience of writing in a notebook while seamlessly enabling digital sharing, creating an intuitive platform for memory preservation that feels both familiar and modern.Designers: Arushi Srivastava, Soham ChatterjeeThe concept draws inspiration from devices like the Microsoft Surface Duo, featuring a hinged design that opens like a traditional book. When unfolded, the two screens create a paper-like writing surface that responds to stylus input, somewhat resembling the tactile experience of writing in a physical journal. Mimicking an already familiar object helps reduce the technological learning curve for elderly users, allowing them to focus on writing down their thoughts and memories rather than struggling with unfamiliar technology.Unlike conventional notebooks, this digital journal concept offers immediate sharing capabilities. Users can selectively share specific journal pages with family members through simple, intuitive controls. This selective sharing feature preserves privacy while enabling meaningful connectiongrandparents might share a childhood story with grandchildren, document family recipes, or simply update loved ones about their daily activities without the frustration of scanning physical pages or navigating complicated apps. The dual-screen approach offers significant advantages over single-screen tablets. The book-like format creates a natural division between private and shareable content, helping users mentally organize their thoughts. The physical act of turning from one screen to another mimics page-turning, reinforcing the familiar journaling experience that many seniors find comforting and therapeutic. This familiarity encourages regular use, potentially supporting cognitive health through consistent writing practice.Memory researchers have long recognized journalings benefits for cognitive maintenance and emotional well-being. By combining this therapeutic activity with social connection, the dual-screen journal concept addresses multiple needs simultaneously. Regular documentation helps preserve memories that might otherwise fade, while the sharing capability maintains family bonds across distances. For families concerned about cognitive decline, these shared journal entries can also provide subtle insights into their loved ones well-being without intrusive monitoring.Despite its promising concept, designers must address several challenges before such a device can succeed in the senior market. Interface simplicity remains paramount. Too many features or complicated navigation would undermine the concepts accessibility. Privacy protections must be robust yet straightforward, ensuring users maintain complete control over what they share. Battery life, durability, and large, legible text options would also be essential considerations for elderly users with varying physical capabilities. The dual-screen journal represents a thoughtful response to the universal human need for connection and memory preservation. By honoring seniors preferences for familiar writing experiences while gently introducing digital sharing benefits, this concept demonstrates how technology can serve human needs rather than forcing adaptation to technological constraints. As our population ages, such empathetic design approaches will become increasingly valuable in maintaining intergenerational bonds and preserving our collective stories. The post Dual-Screen Journal Concept Bridges Memories and Connections for Elderly Users first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Toyota FT-me EV with solar panel on top spices up micro mobility market
    www.yankodesign.com
Theres no doubt that traffic congestion is becoming a nemesis in urban settings. This is reason enough for every major automotive manufacturer to go the electric way with the accompanying compact form factor. A countless number of personal commuters and two-seater versions have given us reason enough to make a radical change in the perception of future commuting. The FT-Me compact two-seater concept by the Japanese automaker is designed with a vision to navigate the bustling city traffic with maximum efficiency. This jet helmet-inspired commuter has a sharp element to it, even though it measures just 2.5 meters long and weighs just 937 pounds. These dimensions pit it right against the likes of Citroen Ami or Microline, coming in the European L6e category. The top speed is capped at 28 mph to comply with the classification requirements, and even a teenager can drive it since itll come under the quadricycle category.Designer: ToyotaThe primary focus of the designers for this vehicle is high maneuverability and compact design that fits into tight parking spaces as well. The propulsion system on the vehicle consumes three times less energy (per mile) than any other comparable system. The estimated range on the pint-sized commuter in tests is 62 miles on a single charge. On top of that, it has solar panels on the roof to provide a few extra miles of range, extending it to around 118 on a sunny day. According to the maker, the peculiar black and contrasting white scheme is symbolic of the sense of safety, robustness, and a lightweight, go-anywhere attitude. The sense of airiness on the inside is honed by the 360-degree visibility on all sides which makes it perfect for any kind of user.At its core, the lightweight vehicle is a two-seater commuter, but the passenger seat can be easily removed to use as cargo space. There is enough to fit a foldable bicycle or anything measuring 1.2 meters long. This attribute could make it a practical choice for delivery companies or last-mile cargo haulers that want to transport lightweight loads. Toyota has been mindful enough to include drivers with disability since it comes with hand-controlled acceleration and brake controls on the steering wheel. Smart features come in the form of keyless entry courtesy of the smartphone app.The bi-tone exterior that extends to the wheels is not just for the sharp looks as it aids the other motorists to spot the car in dark conditions. Especially when you choose the custom panels with murals or graphics on them. Toyota has not detailed any of the specifications or the availability of the pint-sized EV, but we expect it to be priced anywhere between $8,000 $10,000 on the higher side. If Toyota plans to bring the FT-Me micromobility vehicle to the US, it has to compete with the likes of Ami for sure. The post Toyota FT-me EV with solar panel on top spices up micro mobility market first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • In a twist, Apple has two new Mac displays in the works
    www.macworld.com
MacworldApples Macs are all up to date (well, except for the Mac Pro), but the companys displays are a bit outdated. Good news, though: according to a report by Bloombergs Mark Gurman, new models are in the works but they wont arrive for at least several more months. It had previously reported that Apple is working on a new Studio Display (codenamed J427) for release by the end of 2025 or in early 2026. In this latest report, Gurman reiterates the same information but adds one twist that Apple is working on a second display (codenamed J527). Gurman speculates that the second display could be a second model with a different screen size or set of specifications, but its most likely a new Pro Display XDR.The current Studio Display was released two years ago and the Pro Display XDR is over five years old. While both are great products, they dont offer several features that have been developed since their release. For example, both displays have a maximum refresh rate of 60Hz, which is acceptable for most people, but 120Hz (or even 144Hz) is offered by most high-end third-party displays.According to reports on Apples release schedule, the company has plans to release M5 MacBook Pros in November. That could also include a new Mac Pro, which would be an appropriate time to release the new displays. However, if you cant wait, there are plenty of great displays you can buy now that are more affordable than Apples offerings. Check out Macworlds best monitors roundup to help you find a display for your Mac.
