  • US music subscriptions cross 100 million as digital downloads drop
    www.theverge.com
Business is still booming for music streaming services, which crossed the 100 million US subscriber mark in 2024, according to the Record Industry Association of Americas (RIAA) latest revenue report. Overall sales were also bolstered by physical media, which is growing at a slightly faster rate than digital, thanks in large part to continually increasing vinyl sales.Paid subscriptions, ad-supported services, digital and customized radio, social media platforms, digital fitness apps and others grew 4% to a record high $14.9 billion in revenue, writes the RIAA. Thats about half a billion dollars more than the previous years take.A lot of the growth in streaming services comes from Spotify, which recently announced it had finally turned a profit for a full year in 2024. That year, the company continued to increase prices and grew its Premium subscriber base to 263 million worldwide. Spotify didnt say how many of its subscribers were in the US.Meanwhile, vinyl, which experienced a 7 percent growth and has now outsold CDs for the third consecutive year, pulled in $1.4 billion of an overall $2 billion spent on physical media. CD revenue was up by a percent, earning $541 million for the year. Digital downloads were down by 14.9 percent versus last year and make up just two percent of the overall take.

  • Nvidia says ‘the age of generalist robotics is here’
    www.theverge.com
Nvidia has announced that Isaac GR00T N1 the companys open-source, pretrained but customizable foundation model thats designed to expedite the development and capabilities of humanoid robots is now available. The age of generalist robotics is here, says Nvidia founder and CEO, Jensen Huang. With Nvidia Isaac GR00T N1 and new data-generation and robot-learning frameworks, robotics developers everywhere will open the next frontier in the age of AI.During his GTC 2025 keynote today, Huang demonstrated 1Xs NEO Gamma humanoid robot performing autonomous tidying jobs using a post-trained policy built on the GR00T N1 model. The future of humanoids is about adaptability and learning, says 1X Technologies CEO Bernt Brnich. NVIDIAs GR00T N1 model provides a major breakthrough for robot reasoning and skills. With a minimal amount of post-training data, we were able to fully deploy on NEO Gamma furthering our mission of creating robots that are not tools, but companions that can assist humans in meaningful, immeasurable ways. You might recall seeing this freakishly lifelike bot a few weeks ago in Nothings teaser for its latest phone. We didnt post it because it looked like another human in a robot suit thanks, Elon.Other companies developing humanoid robots who have had early access to the GR00T N1 model include Boston Dynamics, the creators of Atlas; Agility Robotics; Mentee Robotics; and Neura Robotics.Originally announced as Project GR00T a year ago, the GR00T N1 foundation model utilizes a dual-system architecture inspired by human cognition.System 1, as Nvidia calls it, is described as a fast-thinking action model that behaves similarly to human reflexes and intuition. It was trained on data collected through human demonstrations and synthetic data generated by Nvidias Omniverse platform.System 2, which is powered by a vision language model, is a slow-thinking model that reasons about its environment and the instructions it has received to plan actions. Those plans are passed along to System 1, which translates them into precise, continuous robot movements that include grasping, moving objects with one or two arms, as well as more complex multistep tasks that involve combinations of basic skills. While the GR00T N1 foundation model is pretrained with generalized humanoid reasoning and skills, developers can customize its behavior and capabilities for specific needs by post-training it with data gathered from human demonstrations or simulations.Nvidia has made GR00T N1 training data and task evaluation scenarios available for download through Hugging Face and GitHub.See More:

  • MemQ: Enhancing Knowledge Graph Question Answering with Memory-Augmented Query Reconstruction
    www.marktechpost.com
LLMs have shown strong performance in Knowledge Graph Question Answering (KGQA) by leveraging planning and interactive strategies to query knowledge graphs. Many existing approaches rely on SPARQL-based tools to retrieve information, allowing models to generate accurate answers. Some methods enhance LLMs reasoning abilities by constructing tool-based reasoning paths, while others employ decision-making frameworks that use environmental feedback to interact with knowledge graphs. Although these strategies have improved KGQA accuracy, they often blur the distinction between tool use and actual reasoning. This confusion reduces interpretability, diminishes readability, and increases the risk of hallucinated tool invocations, where models generate incorrect or irrelevant responses due to over-reliance on parametric knowledge. To address these limitations, researchers have explored memory-augmented techniques that provide external knowledge storage to support complex reasoning. Prior work has integrated memory modules for long-term context retention, enabling more reliable decision-making. Early KGQA methods used key-value memory and graph neural networks to infer answers, while recent LLM-based approaches leverage large-scale models for enhanced reasoning. Some strategies employ supervised fine-tuning to improve understanding, while others use discriminative techniques to mitigate hallucinations. However, existing KGQA methods still struggle to separate reasoning from tool invocation, leading to a lack of focus on logical inference.Researchers from the Harbin Institute of Technology propose Memory-augmented Query Reconstruction (MemQ), a framework that separates reasoning from tool invocation in LLM-based KGQA. MemQ establishes a structured query memory using LLM-generated descriptions of decomposed query statements, enabling independent reasoning. This approach enhances readability by generating explicit reasoning steps and retrieving relevant memory based on semantic similarity. MemQ improves interpretability and reduces hallucinated tool use by eliminating unnecessary tool reliance. Experimental results show that MemQ achieves state-of-the-art performance on WebQSP and CWQ benchmarks, demonstrating its effectiveness in enhancing LLM-based KGQA reasoning.MemQ is designed to separate reasoning from tool invocation in LLM-based KGQA through three key tasks: memory construction, knowledge reasoning, and query reconstruction. Memory construction involves storing query statements with corresponding natural language descriptions for efficient retrieval. The knowledge reasoning process generates structured multi-step reasoning plans, ensuring logical progression in answering queries. Query reconstruction then retrieves relevant query statements based on semantic similarity and assembles them into a final query. MemQ enhances reasoning by fine-tuning LLMs with explanation-statement pairs and uses an adaptive memory recall strategy, outperforming prior methods on WebQSP and CWQ benchmarks with state-of-the-art results. The experiments assess MemQs performance in knowledge graph question-answering using WebQSP and CWQ datasets. Hits@1 and F1 scores serve as evaluation metrics, with comparisons against tool-based baselines like RoG and ToG. MemQ, built on Llama2-7b, outperforms previous methods, showing improved reasoning via a memory-augmented approach. Analytical experiments highlight superior structural and edge accuracy. Ablation studies confirm MemQs effectiveness in tool utilization and reasoning stability. Additional analyses explore reasoning errors, hallucinations, data efficiency, and model universality, demonstrating its adaptability across architectures. MemQ significantly enhances structured reasoning while reducing errors in multi-step queries. In conclusion, the study introduces MemQ, a memory-augmented framework that separates LLM reasoning from tool invocation to reduce hallucinations in KGQA. MemQ improves query reconstruction and enhances reasoning clarity by incorporating a query memory module. The approach enables natural language reasoning while mitigating errors in tool usage. Experiments on WebQSP and CWQ benchmarks demonstrate that MemQ outperforms existing methods, achieving state-of-the-art results. By addressing the confusion between tool utilization and reasoning, MemQ enhances the readability and accuracy of LLM-generated responses, offering a more effective approach to KGQA.Check outthe Paper. All credit for this research goes to the researchers of this project. • Split Fiction Dev Calls EA a 'Good Partner' as Hazelight Begins Work on Next Game
    www.ign.com
Hazelight director Josef Fares has taken the time to clear the air about his studios relationship with EA while promising that the It Takes Two and Split Fiction developer is already working on its next game. The creative behind the infamous f*** the Oscars line spoke about Hazelights past, present, and future during an interview on the Friends Per Second podcast. For those who enjoyed Split Fiction, the studios most recent critically acclaimed co-op adventure, he says the team is already putting some early ideas together. For me, personally, every time a game is out, Im kind of done with it. Im kind of like, OK, heres the next thing, Fares explained when talking about his mentality after releasing Split Fiction. This has been a bit extra special. I would say that its been the best-received game we have done, but to be honest, everybody is super happy, but Im so fully-focused and excited on the next thing that we already have started.PlayFares declined to share too much about what Hazelight's mysterious next title is called, what its about, or what kind of game it will be, mostly because work only began around one month ago. Hazelight is well known for the mark its left on co-op gaming, but for now, well have to wait at least a few more years to hear how it plans to follow Split Fiction. There is a reason why I cant talk about the next game; its because its quite early, Fares added. You do know, at Hazelight, we dont work on [a] game more than three or four years. Three or four years is not so far away. Then were going to talk more about it. Its way too early, but just know this: we are very, very, very, very excited here. Very excited, and we started working on this a month ago-ish.A Tale of Two StudiosHazelight has worked with publisher EA on several titles in the last seven years. While games like A Way Out and It Takes Two have continued to secure the studios place as a leading developer in the industry, Fares said the company has had zero input when it comes to the games the developer chooses to work on.Heres the thing, people dont understand this: EA is a supporter. We dont pitch games to them, he explained. We say, Were going to do this. Thats it. They have zero, and I mean zero, thing to say about what were doing next. While EA has a mixed reputation as a publisher, Fares said his experience with EA has been largely positive as Hazelight charges forward to whats coming next. With that said, I have to say, theyre a good partner, Fares added. Nobody believes me. Whatever I say, theyre like, Yeah, yeah. Its EA. Look, I dont know anything about what EA are doing. Maybe theyre f***ing up with other developers. With us, no. They respect us. They respect what we do. Im very clear with them that they cannot interfere with what we do. Now, we have become one of their most successful studios.Split Fiction has easily solidified its place as another Hazelight success story in more ways than one. While it quickly propelled itself to high ratings from critics (IGN's Split Fiction review returned a 9/10), it also managed to sell 1 million copies in only 48 hours and 2 million copies in just one week. That means its already outpacing its previous title, It Takes Two, which had sold 20 million copies as of October 2024.Michael Cripe is a freelance contributor with IGN. • First Look at 5 New Cards From Tarkir: Dragonstorm, Magic: The Gathering's Next Set
    www.ign.com
While Magic: The Gatherings big crossovers with things like Final Fantasy and Spider-Man might be stealing the spotlight lately, the next set in the line-up is already storming toward us. Tarkir: Dragonstorm returns to Magics own plane of Tarkir, and weve got an exclusive first look at a five cards that I expect well be seeing a lot of at the draft table next month. (The expansion is available to preorder now on Amazon).Flip through the gallery below to see all five cards, and read on for a word from Wizards of the Coast about their design and the set as a whole.Magic: The Gathering - 5 New Cards from Tarkir: DragonstormThese five cards are whats referred to as a cycle, with all of them sharing some common design ground spread across each of Magics colors. In this case, all five are cheap, common-rarity creatures with an ability tied to one of Tarkirs three-color clans, and another that allows you to turn mana into a color from that clan. Three-color limited environments need quite a bit of mana fixing, at all rarities explains Wizards of the Coast Senior Game Designer Adam Prosak. We wanted lots of decks to be able to access mana fixing, so we created quite a few designs dedicated to helping solve mana issues. In particular, these creatures allow you to play to the board while developing your mana at the same time - many other designs (such as tapped lands) only make mana and you tend to fall behind in order to fix your mana.Preorder MTG Tarkir: Dragonstorm CardsMagic: The Gathering Tarkir: Dragonstorm - Play Booster Box $164.70 at AmazonMagic: The Gathering Tarkir: Dragonstorm - Collector Booster Box $299.88 at AmazonMagic: The Gathering Tarkir: Dragonstorm - Collector Booster $24.99 at AmazonMagic: The Gathering Tarkir: Dragonstorm - Commander Deck Bundle - Includes All 5 Decks $224.95 at AmazonMagic: The Gathering Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander Deck - Abzan Armor $44.99 at AmazonMagic: The Gathering Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander Deck - Jeskai Striker $44.99 at AmazonMagic: The Gathering Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander Deck - Sultai Arisen$44.99 at AmazonMagic: The Gathering Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander Deck - Mardu Surge $44.99 at AmazonMagic: The Gathering Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander Deck - Temur Roar $44.99 at AmazonSenior Worldbuilding Designer Lauren Bond says that while that mechanical side came first with this particular cycle, the team often relies on common cards as a place to showcase the world of a set - in this case, how these clans are different from the last time players saw them. The passionate action-oriented monks of the Jeskai, the Whispers using Temur magic, Nagas in the Sultai as protectors (and avengers) of the jungle, Mardu military prowess including supporting roles (and that dragons can come in many shapes and sizes!), and Abzan clerics regrowing the lost kin trees.PlayOne criticism of some recent Magic sets has been an overreliance on tropes or thematic gimmicks, even while revisiting previous planes, which makes Dragonstorm standout in its comparatively straightforward return to Tarkir. Senior Worldbuilding Art Director Forrest Schehl says that feedback like that is important to WOTC, but that top-level pitch for Tarkir was established well before the release of Murders at Karlov Manor and the sets that followed, and didnt change after them.We wanted to combine Dragons and Clans in a way that hadnt been seen on Tarkir in the same set and the Dragonstorms that were a defining feature of the plane were going to play a big role in shaping how we approached this return-to. The pressure to get it right was something Lauren and I felt from day one, we always wanted to build the next chapter of this beloved plane with authenticity and substance.Tarkir: Dragonstorm is up for preorder now, with the set scheduled for release in both paper and digitally on April 11 and in-store prerelease events kicking off on April 4. Read on for the full interview with Wizards of the Coasts Adam Prosak, Lauren Bond, and Forrest Schehl:IGN: This card cycle seems laser targeted at being much-needed glue for Limited - what were the goals these cards needed to achieve?Adam Prosak, Senior Game Designer: Three-color limited environments need quite a bit of mana fixing, at all rarities. We wanted lots of decks to be able to access mana fixing, so we created quite a few designs dedicated to helping solve mana issues. In particular, these creatures allow you to play to the board while developing your mana at the same time - many other designs (such as tapped lands) only make mana and you tend to fall behind in order to fix your mana. They also strike me as lore glue, if you will, with each providing some insight into their clans. Was that an explicit part of their role in the set?Lauren Bond, Senior Worldbuilding Designer: While the mechanics of these cards came first, as worldbuilders we often look to common cards (especially cycles) as a place to showcase key elements of setting as players will see them frequently in drafts. This cycle being anchored in the returning color of each clan was an opportunity to show how that color manifests in the new version of the clan. The passionate action-oriented monks of the Jeskai, the Whispers using Temur magic, Nagas in the Sultai as protectors (and avengers) of the jungle, Mardu military prowess including supporting roles (and that dragons can come in many shapes and sizes!), and Abzan clerics regrowing the lost kin trees. Three-color sets arent made very often, can you talk about some of the challenges of doing them and how you tried to address those in Dragonstorm?AP: By their nature, three-color cards go into fewer decks than their monocolor (or two color) counterparts. They are often exciting, as long as they arent overdone.Building a sealed/draft environment is the biggest challenge most constructed formats easily allow for three colors, so its not too challenging for three color cards to find a home. On the other hand, we have to provide enough mana fixing to allow players to play their three color cards, without making it so plentiful that there every deck can play all five colors easily. This will be the first time since 2023's Lost Caverns of Ixalan that a Standard set has returned to an existing plane without some sort of thematic twist like Aetherdrift or Murders at Karlov Manor, and the rest of 2025s line-up means it will be the last time a set does so for roughly another year after that at least. With that in mind, is there an added pressure here to do justice to what fans are expecting of both Tarkir and a classic Magic setting in general? Forrest Schehl, Senior Worldbuilding Art Director: Fan feedback is super important to us and is something we take into consideration during early development of every new set we make. That being said, the top-level pitch for Tarkir was established well before the release of Murders at Karlov Manor and remained the same throughout development. We wanted to combine Dragons and Clans in a way that hadnt been seen on Tarkir in the same set and the Dragonstorms that were a defining feature of the plane were going to play a big role in shaping how we approached this return-to. The pressure to get it right was something Lauren and I felt from day one, we always wanted to build the next chapter of this beloved plane with authenticity and substance.Lastly, while its one that was previously revealed, I have to ask about Stormscale Scion - a card that is mocking the Storm Scale itself! People have had a lot of fun talking about this card and the unexpected return of Storm to Standard, was that a hard decision to make? Is there a bit of an enticing challenge to returning to risky mechanics like that, Affinity, or Phyrexian Mana in recent years? AP: I find that making new cards for existing mechanics is often easier than making new mechanics. With existing mechanics, we are able to learn some lessons about what worked well and what pitfalls to avoid. With the Stormscale Scion, we found that the card is fun and powerful even with a few copies, so we leaned into that rather than some of the other storm cards that win you the game, but only if youve cast lots of spells.Tom Marks is IGN's Executive Reviews Editor. • Are Tiny Paintings the Next Big Thing?
    www.elledecor.com
In a world where bravado can often be measured by size, a new trend in interior design is challenging the markets appetite for grandiosity. Enter the tiny painting trend, where instead of overcrowding a space with a sprawling gallery wall or imposing piece, theres a growing interest in smaller, more intimate kinds of art. In 2018, there was a marked push towards larger paintings, according to artnets Kate Brown. At fairs and in galleries, canvases towered with a cold confidence that felt, at moments, unmerited, Brown wrote. However, recently, smaller artworks have become more apparent in galleries and on fair floors. And now that she mentioned it, were seeing it everywhere. Take Brooklyn-based Jennifer J. Lee, who assisted the abstract painter Julie Mehretu on a large-scale commission for the lobby of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Shes been working smaller lately, with her latest work on view in an exhibition titled Small Fixations. Meanwhile, theres Lisbon-based Mia Middleton who makes small-scale photorealist freeze frames; Istanbul-based Hasan Kale who paints incredibly detailed scenes on bottle caps, halved almonds, matchstick heads, and butterfly wings; and New York-based Izzy Barber, who creates micro-sized observational plein air paintings. The works of these artists, among so many others, offer a refreshing promptan invitation to step in and get intimate. View full post on Instagram For Brown, there might be a simple explanation for this phenomenon. She referred to the High Heel Index theory, a measurement in the world of trend forecasting coined by former IBM consumer products expert Trevor Davis. Davis found that shoe heel height is correlated with economic upturns, with recession periods being met by lower heel height. Could the same be said for the length (and width) of paintings and art? Brown asks. Surely, material costs, studio space, and shipping fees all come into play in trying times (consider the pandemic, when many artists were literally working at their kitchen tables). While necessity can dictate trends, many designers are here for it, experimenting with the small art experience in new ways. ELLE DECOR A-List designer Ghislaine Vias says she's been inspired, recently, by small portrait series in very traditional houses. It's always fun to reinterpret traditional design elements, taking them out of their expected context and giving them a refresh in contemporary interiors," she says. Playing with scale can have a dramatic effect, and a series of tiny paintingsespecially in places where one might expect an oversized piece like above a bedadds an unexpected element to a space."Brooklyn-based interior designer Taylor Migliazzo Simon, the mind behind this year's takeoff 'Unexpected Red Theory' trend, agrees. She recently took to Instagram in praise of tiny art. There's no such thing as art that is too small, she said in the post. Its almost tongue and cheek kind of fun but can still feel refined.View full post on InstagramOther designers are skeptical. This is just another design trend, says ELLE DECOR A-List designer Joy Moyler, noting that she has yet to field a client request for a tiny art wall. Some images just need to be larger, bolder, if you will, to read and make an impact, she says. My preference is a mix of large and small framesthese collages read more as a sculptural element on the wall. For those looking to think micro-sized in their own space, Vias advises homeowners to be unconventional. When you're about to do the obviouslike hanging a large piece of art or two on a large wallconsider turning things upside down, she explains. The key to this is placement: I dont have many design rules but scale is important. If the scale isnt considered, it can feel awkward. This style can also work in contrast with oversized art, Vias adds. Try placing an extra large piece on one wall and juxtapose it with a cluster of tiny paintings nearby. This creates a playful tension. Or, consider layering a small portrait over wallpaper: If you have a bold, modern graphic print you can opt for a 17th-century portrait, while for a smaller scale wallcovering you can pair it with a contemporary black and white photograph," she says. "There are endlessly fun ways to experiment."Rachel SilvaAssociate Digital EditorRachel Silva is the associate digital editor at ELLE DECOR, where she covers all things design, architecture, and lifestyle.
