• Violent attacks on Tesla dealerships are on the rise as White House vows to crackdown on protesters
    www.fastcompany.com
Cybertrucks set ablaze. Bullets and Molotov cocktails aimed at Tesla showrooms.Attacks on property carrying the logo of Elon Musks electric-car company are cropping up across the U.S. and overseas. While no injuries have been reported, Tesla showrooms, vehicle lots, charging stations and privately owned cars have been targeted. In Canada, Tesla was removed from an international auto show over safety concerns. There has been a clear uptick in Tesla attacks since President Donald Trump took office and empowered Musk to oversee a new Department of Government Efficiency that is slashing government spending. Experts on domestic extremism say its impossible to know yet if the spate of incidents will balloon into a long-term pattern. In Trumps first term, his properties in New York City, Washington and elsewhere became a natural place for protest. In the early days of his second term, Tesla is filling that role.Tesla is an easy target, said Randy Blazak, a sociologist who studies political violence. Theyre rolling down our streets. They have dealerships in our neighborhoods.Musk critics have organized dozens of peaceful demonstrations at Tesla dealerships and factories across North America and Europe. Some Tesla owners, including a U.S. senator who feuded with Musk, have vowed to sell their vehicles. But the attacks are keeping law enforcement busy.Prosecutors in Colorado charged a woman last month in connection with a string of attacks on Tesla dealerships, including Molotov cocktails thrown at vehicles and the words Nazi cars spray-painted on a building. And federal agents in South Carolina last week arrested a man they say set fire to Tesla charging stations near Charleston. An agent from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives wrote in an affidavit that authorities found writings critical of the government and DOGE in his bedroom and wallet. The statement made mention of sending a message based on these beliefs, the agent wrote.A number of the most prominent incidents have been reported in left-leaning cities in the Pacific Northwest, like Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, where anti-Trump and anti-Musk sentiment runs high.An Oregon man is facing charges after allegedly throwing several Molotov cocktails at a Tesla store in Salem, then returning another day and shooting out windows. In the Portland suburb of Tigard, more than a dozen bullets were fired at a Tesla showroom last week, damaging vehicles and windows, the second time in a week that the store was targeted.Four Cybertrucks were set on fire in a Tesla lot in Seattle earlier this month. On Friday, witnesses reported a man poured gasoline on an unoccupied Tesla Model S and started a fire on a Seattle street. In Las Vegas, several Tesla vehicles were set ablaze early Tuesday outside a Tesla service center where the word resist was also painted in red across the buildings front doors. Authorities said at least one person threw Molotov cocktailscrude bombs filled with gasoline or another flammable liquidand fired several rounds from a weapon into the vehicles. Was this terrorism? Was it something else? It certainly has some of the hallmarks that we might thinkthe writing on the wall, potential political agenda, an act of violence, Spencer Evans, the special agent in charge of the Las Vegas FBI office, said at a news conference. None of those factors are lost on us.Tesla becomes a target for the leftTesla was once the darling of the left. Helped to viability by a $465 million federal loan during the Obama administration, the company popularized electric vehicles and proved, despite their early reputation, that they didnt have to be small, stodgy, underpowered and limited in range.More recently, though, Musk has allied himself with the right. He bought the social network Twitter, renamed it X and erased restrictions that had infuriated conservatives. He spent an estimated $250 million to boost Trumps 2024 Republican campaign, becoming by far his biggest benefactor.Musk continues to run Teslaas well as X and the rocket manufacturer SpaceXwhile also serving as Trumps adviser.Tesla stock doubled in value in the weeks after Trumps election but has since shed all those gains.Trump gave a boost to the company when he turned the White House driveway into an electric vehicle showroom. The president promoted the vehicles and said he would purchase an $80,000 Model S, eschewing his fierce past criticism of electric vehicles.Tesla did not respond to a request for comment. Musk briefly addressed the vandalism Monday during an appearance on Sen. Ted Cruzs podcast, saying at least some of it is organized and paid for by left-wing organizations in America, funded by left-wing billionaires, essentially. This level of violence is insane and deeply wrong, Musk wrote Tuesday on X, sharing a video of burning Teslas in Las Vegas. Tesla just makes electric cars and has done nothing to deserve these evil attacks. The progressive group Indivisible, which published a guide for supporters to organize Musk Or Us protests around the country, said in a statement that all of its guidance is publicly available and it explicitly encourages peaceful protest and condemns any acts of violence or vandalism. Some Tesla owners have resorted to cheeky bumper stickers to distance themselves from their vehicles new stigma and perhaps deter would-be vandals. They say things like I bought this before we knew Elon was crazy or I just wanted an electric car. Sorry guys.Prices for used Cybertrucks, Teslas most distinctive product, have dropped nearly 8% since Trump took office, according to CarGurus, which aggregates used car vehicle listings. The market as a whole remained steady over the period. The White House vows a crackdownThe White House has thrown its weight behind Musk, the highest-profile member of Trumps administration and a key donor to committees promoting Trumps political interests. Trump has said Tesla vandalism amounts to domestic terror, and Trump has threatened retribution, warning that those who target the company are going to go through hell.Attorney General Pam Bondi said shed opened an investigation to see how is this being funded, who is behind this.If youre going to touch a Tesla, go to a dealership, do anything, you better watch out because were coming after you, Bondi said Friday on Fox Business Network. In a statement Tuesday, she vowed to continue investigations that impose severe consequences, including for those operating behind the scenes to coordinate and fund these crimes.Colin Clarke, a senior research fellow at the Soufan Center, said left-wing political violence tends to target property rather than people. He views the rise of neo-Nazi groups as a bigger security threat at this point. Its not the type of act that I would prioritize, Clarke said. Not right now compared to all the other threats that are out there.Theresa Ramsdell is the president of the Tesla Owners of Washington state, a club for Tesla enthusiasts, and she and her husband own three of them.Hate on Elon and Trump all you wantthats fine and dandy, its your choice, she said. It doesnt justify ruining somebodys property, vandalizing it, destroying it, setting it on fire. Theres other ways to get your voice heard thats more effective.Someone recently slapped a no Elon sticker on the tailgate of her Cybertruck, but she said she doesnt intend to stop driving her Teslas. Other club members have taken a similar view, she said.I love my car. Its the safest car, Ramsdell said. Im not going to let somebody else judge me for the car I drive.Cooper reported from Phoenix.Jonathan J. Cooper and Gene Johnson, Associated Press

  • A Ruggedized Smartphone with a Removable Screen That Fits In Your Ear
    www.core77.com
This WP200Pro 5G, by Chinese manufacturer Oukitel, is a ruggedized smartphone. The company says the shockproof casing, aluminum frame, impact-resistant glass and reinforced rubber can take a beating, and it's both water- and dust-resistant. It also has a rather bizarre design feature. On the back of the phone is a small additional screen that can display notifications. This screen can be popped out and placed into a wristwatch accessory, and connects to your phone via Bluetooth. And, get this, the screen has an earbud on the back of it, and can be popped into your ear. They've done a real bang-up Photoshop job showing this "Multifunctional Bluetooth Earphone" in use. It will be interesting to see if this feature actually proves useful and catches on. We'll have to wait for the phone to be released; at press time Oukitel hadn't announced a price nor delivery date.

  • Small Space Design: A Camper Van with the Bathroom in the Center
    www.core77.com
Who has it harder: Architects designing tiny houses and micro apartments, or designers of camper vans? I'd say the latter, as they're occasionally dealing with spaces of less than 100 square feet.Like this Marylin Onroad model, for instance. It was built by Camper Schmiede, a German manufacturer, as an exhibition vehicle to show off their design skills within a limited space. The van was designed for digital nomads. The rear cargo area features a seating surface/bed and a height-adjustable table. (Puzzlingly, the company doesn't mention where or how these things stow away.) Above that is a bed, the full width of the interior, that can be lowered from the ceiling. When it comes time to lounge, there's a rather large tailgate hammock/recliner. Up top is a rooftop tent that can sleep two. The front seats can flip around for chowtime. In the kitchen area is where I think the designers made a misstep. That waterfall edge and quarterpipe in the countertop might look cool, but they waste space. In a van, every inch counts, and those radii take up precious space with an unusable surface. You might be wondering where the bathroom is. The water-free toilet, which seals your poo in airtight bags, slides out from the cabinet. For privacy, you yell at your family to go outside. As for the shower, it's actually in the middle of the kitchen; you deploy a rollout partition to enclose it. This means you're showering with your Smeg refrigerator, but with spaces this tight, some sacrifices have to be made. Lastly, up top there's a little lounge space alongside the tent. The solar panels are walkable and non-slip. Though built as an exhibition model, the Marylin Onroad is for sale, with an asking price of 269,000 (USD $288,000).

  • NVIDIA debuts worlds smallest personal supercomputer to push boundaries of generative AI
    www.yankodesign.com
NVIDIA founder and CEO, Jensen Huang revealed to the world the DGX Spark AI supercomputer during the keynote of the GTC 2025 conference in California. Formerly codenamed Project DIGITS, the high-performance desktop supercomputer is powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell Ultra platform. This model can run locally or on an accelerated cloud data center, allowing AI developers, data scientists, robotic developers, researchers, and students to develop applications or conduct generative AI studies without any computing limitations. At the keynote, Jensen said that AI has transformed every layer of the computing stack. It stands to reason a new class of computers would emergedesigned for AI-native developers and to run AI-native applications. According to him, this personal AI computer will take forward AI on the cloud, desktop, or edge applications. Along with the DGX Spark supercomputer, the company also revealed the DGX Station to leverage the capabilities of the Grace Blackwell architecture for more professional applications.Designer: NVIDIAThe DGX Spark is the worlds smallest AI supercomputer destined to overshadow the current generation of computing machines with its exponentially powerful hardware. This compact machine (about the size of an Apple M4 Mac mini) is powered by the small NVIDIA GB10 Grace Blackwell system-on-chip that has a GPU employing fifth-generation Tensor Cores and boasts FP4 support. Just for reference, the chip paired with 128GB unified system memory can perform 1,000 trillion AI computing operations per second. This makes the new supercomputer ideal for AI reasoning models that demand such mind-boggling levels of computing power. Both the GB10 Superchip and the onboard GPU are optimized for memory-intensive AI workloads thanks to the coherent memory model having 5 times the capacity of a fifth-generation PCIe. The transfer of created models from a users desktop to the cloud is going to be equally seamless, making it easier to prototype or fine-tune the workflows. The DGX Spark can be reserved right away for $3,999 with shipping expected by summer this year.To support the computing power of the smaller desktop model is the DGX Station which is more of an enterprise solution for professionals. It comes with the GB300 Grace Blackwell Ultra Desktop Superchip that offers 20 petaflops of performance and 784GB of unified system memory. The solution gets a 72-core Grace Neoverse V2 CPU and has support for FP4 precision. This machine will come loaded with a ConnectX-8 SuperNIC network interface card supporting 800Gb/s throughputs. That is an insane amount of power, but it will eventually become the norm in coming years given the requirement of AI-based smart systems. There is no word yet on the pricing or availability of the DGX Station, but it is expected to be released later this year with manufacturing partners like Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. The post NVIDIA debuts worlds smallest personal supercomputer to push boundaries of generative AI first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Apple Passwords bug left users vulnerable for three months
    www.macworld.com
MacworldIt emerged Tuesday that a serious HTTP bug in Apples Passwords app left users vulnerable to phishing attacks for an astonishing three months after its debut last year.A fix for the vulnerability was included in the iOS 18.2 software update, which rolled out on December 11 last year. But sources indicate that the bug had been there, unpatched, since the launch of iOS 18.0 (and the Passwords app itself) on September 16.The occasional security researchers at Mysk spotted the problem when they noticed that Passwords was fetching logos and icons via unencrypted HTTP traffic and also defaulted to HTTP when opening password reset pages. This left the user vulnerable, the company told 9to5Mac, which explains the issue in more detail that I will attempt here. An attacker with privileged network access could intercept the HTTP request and redirect the user to a phishing website. We were surprised that Apple didnt enforce HTTPS by default for such a sensitive app [and] Apple should provide an option for security-conscious users to disable downloading icons completely.Mysks words were heeded and Apple patched the bug by making Passwords use HTTPS by default. This change was made quietly in iOS 18.2 in December but was only announced on March 17: This issue was addressed by using HTTPS when sending information over the network, Apple now explains in its iOS 18.2 security content page, crediting Talal Haj Bakry and Tommy Mysk of Mysk Inc. for the discovery.Low-profile security patches are one of the reasons why we recommend timely software updates to your Apple devices. To update iOS on your iPhone, open the Settings app, go to General > Software Update, and follow the onscreen instructions.

  • Codeweavers CrossOver for Mac review
    www.macworld.com
MacworldAt a glanceExpert's RatingPros14-day free trialDoesnt require a full version of WindowsImproved interface and ease of useRegular updates, good technical supportConsSome Windows apps arent compatibleCan be complicated to useRequires Rosetta on Apple SiliconOur Verdict Codeweavers is one of the simplest ways to run Windows apps on a Mac, and you dont even need Windows.Price When ReviewedThis value will show the geolocated pricing text for product undefinedBest Pricing TodayCrossOver is based on WINE, which is one of the best options for running Windows software on your Mac. And, like WINE, it uses a compatibility layer that allows Windows apps to run on the Mac without actually requiring a full version of Windows to be installed as well. That can save you a lot of money, as you do need to buy a copy of Windows for use with virtualisation programs such as Parallels Desktop and VMware Fusion. But although WINE is a free, open-source program, its too complicated for most non-technical users, so the team at Codeweavers developed CrossOver as a more straightforward and user-friendly alternative. They also provide good technical support to help with installing a wide variety of Windows games and software.See how CrossOver compares to other Mac Virtual Machines we have tested in: Best Virtual Machine for Mac.Our review is updated for 2025 to take account of the new version: CrossOver 25.CrossOver PriceThat technical support means that CrossOver isnt free, costing $74/60 for a license that provides 12 months of technical support and updates, or you can pay $494/414 for lifetime support. However, theres a 14-day free trial available, so that you can see if it works with the Windows software that you want to run before buying (and theres also a version of CrossOver available for Linux as well).CrossOver PerformanceAt the moment, CrossOver is based on code that was originally written for Intel processors, so it relies on Apples Rosetta to run on Macs with Apple Silicon, but performance still seems to be pretty good, and Codeweavers states that it is working on native support for Apple Silicon for the future.CrossOver works with a wide range of Windows software and apps, but many CrossOver users are dedicated Mac gamers, so much of Codeweavers work is focused on getting it to work with popular Windows games. And, in fact, the Game Porting Kit that Apple provides to help games developers produce Mac versions of their games is based on open-source code from Codeweavers so these guys really know what theyre doing. Theres also a database on their web site that provides compatibility information and advice for running hundreds of Windows apps and games.CrossOver UsabilityCrossOver has always aimed to be more user-friendly than WINE, by allowing you to install Windows apps into bottles which are self-contained files that can be launched and run on your Mac without requiring a full copy of Windows. You can create lots of different bottles for different apps, and bottles can even be configured to provide compatibility with different versions of Windows. This is useful as it allows you to create bottles that are suitable for older games and software that might require a particular version of Windows in order to run properly.Even so, CrossOver can still be quite complicated at times, so version 22 introduced a new interface that was redesigned to be more Mac-like, and also to provide more help when installing many Windows apps and games. When you launch CrossOver you see the main Install window, which lists some popular Windows apps and games, such as The Witcher 3 and Diablo IV, and even productivity tools such as the Quicken accounting software for business users. Theres also a search tool that provides information on hundreds of other Windows apps, and an indication of how well they run with CrossOver. But, as we discovered, there are degrees of compatibility here, with some apps that run well, while others may run with problems and some may simply not work with CrossOver at all. But, somewhat to my surprise, I was able to install and run a 20-year old copy of Microsoft Publisher from an old DVD with no trouble at all, and also Icewind Dale II, an old favourite of mine that doesnt seem to be widely available these days.Latest CrossOver updatesCrossOver continues to receive regular updates, many of which focus on improving support for specific Windows games. Version 22.1 fixed problems that were affecting games such as BioShock Infinite and Grand Theft Auto V, and version 23.0 introduced limited support for some games, such as Diablo IV, that use Microsofts DirectX 12 graphics software (something that even Parallels Desktop is still working on). Diablo IV got a further performance boost with version 23.7, along with Counter Strike 2 and a number of other games, while version 24.0 provided compatibility with the latest version of WINE, as well as a number of additional interface improvements. However, the March 2025 launch of CrossOver 25 is one of the biggest updates of recent years, with CrossOver promising to bring next level gaming to the Mac. Some of the new features in v25 are under-the-bonnet changes, such as adopting the latest version of the underlying WINE technology, which Codeweavers claims includes thousands of programming updates to improve performance and compatibility. This update also introduces a new graphics technology, called DXMT that, according to Codeweavers, provides better performance for less powerful Mac models when running Windows games that use DX11 graphics.Theres improved compatibility with lots of big-name Windows games, allowing you to play games such as Path Of Exile 2, Dragons Dogma 2, and Fallout 76 for the first time. And, along with Steam, CrossOver 25 now supports the Windows versions of the GoG and Epic game stores so that you can download games that you own from those stores. Codeweavers also continues to further streamline the installation process for Windows games and apps for new users who may not have a lot of technical experience. As well as providing a list of popular games and other apps that work well with CrossOver, this new version now has the ability to connect to the compatibility database stored on the Codeweavers website, and can automatically apply the best graphics and audio settings for a variety of different games.Should you buy Codeweavers CrossOver? The sheer effort that the Codeweavers team puts into providing regular updates for CrossOver is impressive, and weve had good experiences using their tech support to get help running the Windows version of Steam on our ageing office iMac. Even so, CrossOver can still be rather complicated for new users, so its definitely worth downloading the trial version to see how well it works with your favourite Windows games and other Windows software.

  • Powering the food industry with AI
    www.technologyreview.com
There has never been a more pressing time for food producers to harness technology to tackle the sectors tough mission. To produce ever more healthy and appealing food for a growing global population in a way that is resilient and affordable, all while minimizing waste and reducing the sectors environmental impact. From farm to factory, artificial intelligence and machine learning can support these goals by increasing efficiency, optimizing supply chains, and accelerating the research and development of new types of healthy products. In agriculture, AI is already helping farmers to monitor crop health, tailor the delivery of inputs, and make harvesting more accurate and efficient. In labs, AI is powering experiments in gene editing to improve crop resilience and enhance the nutritional value of raw ingredients. For processed foods, AI is optimizingproduction economics, improving the texture and flavor of products like alternative proteins and healthier snacks, and strengthening food safety processes too.DOWNLOAD THE REPORTBut despite this promise, industry adoption still lags. Data-sharing remains limited and companies across the value chain have vastly different needs and capabilities. There are also few standards and data governance protocols in place, and more talent and skills are needed to keep pace with the technological wave. All the same, progress is being made and the potential for AI in the food sector is huge. Key findings from the report are as follows:Predictive analytics are accelerating R&D cycles in crop and food science. AI reduces the time and resources needed to experiment with new food productsand turns traditional trial-and-error cycles into more efficient data-driven discoveries. Advanced models and simulations enable scientists to explore natural ingredients and processes by simulating thousands of conditions, configurations, and genetic variations until they crack the right combination.AI is bringing data-driven insights to a fragmented supply chain. AI can revolutionize the food industrys complex value chain by breaking operational silos and translating vast streams of data into actionable intelligence. Notably, large language models (LLMs) and chatbots can serve as digital interpreters, democratizing access to data analysis for farmers and growers, and enabling more informed, strategic decisions by food companies.Partnerships are crucial for maximizing respective strengths. While large agricultural companies lead inAI implementation, promising breakthroughs often emerge from strategic collaborations that leverage complementary strengths with academic institutions and startups. Large companies contribute extensive datasets and industry experience, while startups bring innovation, creativity, and a clean data slate. Combining expertise in a collaborative approach can increase the uptake of AI.Download the full report. This content was produced by Insights, the custom content arm of MIT Technology Review.
