  • Boston Celtics owners net nearly 1,700% return on record $6.1 billion sale of NBA team: Report
    www.fastcompany.com
The NBAs Boston Celtics are used to packing their arena with a sea of green. Now, the companys owners, the Grousbeck family, are seeing green.Thats because the franchise has reportedly been sold for $6.1 billion, per ESPN, to a group led by Bill Chisholm, managing partner at private equity firm Symphony Technology Group. The sale would be the largest for a sports franchise in North American history, beating out the sale of the NFLs Washington Commanders franchise two years ago, which tallied $6.05 billion. The sale would still need to be approved by the NBA Board of Governors. Fast Company has reached out to both the Celtics and Symphony Technology Group for comment. The sale comes on the heels of the Celtics winning the NBA championship last year, the 18th in franchise history. It was announced that the Grousbeck family, the franchises primary owner, would seek to sell the team last summer as well. It bought the team in 2002 for $360 million, and if the $6.1 billion sale does go through, the family would see a roughly 1,700% return on investment. The sale also shows that sports franchise values are steadily increasing. In 2023, both the Phoenix Suns and Milwaukee Bucks were also sold, for $4 billion and $3.5 billion respectively. At the tail end of that year, the Dallas Mavericks were also sold for $3.5 billion. The $6.1 billion valuation would put the Celtics near the upper echelon of North American sports franchises. The most recent rankings from Forbes, which regularly publishes a list of the most valuable sports teams, ranks the NFLs Dallas Cowboys at the top with an estimated value of more than $10 billion. Two other NBA franchises are among the top five: The Golden State Warriors are valued at $8.8 billion, and the New York Knicks are valued at $7.5 billion.

  • AT2 Aerospace Z1 can bridge remote areas with people and cargo
    www.yankodesign.com
When you envision the future, you probably think of hovercrafts, flying cars, and all the other flying things weve seen on The Jetsons and other sci-fi movies and TV shows. But one thing that I randomly think about is what if you needed to transport more people and more cargo? Then you probably still get stuck with airplanes and cargo planes like what we already currently have. But have we ever thought of using blimps and balloons? Apparently, people already have. Designer: AT2 AerospaceThe AT2 Aerospace Z1 airship is a groundbreaking hybrid aircraft designed for efficient transport to remote locations. Combining hydrogen-powered thrust vectoring and helium buoyancy, the Z1 can efficiently carry people and goods over 1,000 miles (1,600 km) per trip. Originally a Lockheed Martin project, the Z1 was acquired by AT2 Aerospace, led by Dr. Bob Boyd. Its unique tri-lobe design maximizes lift, with 80% derived from helium and 20% from thrust. The central lobe houses cargo and a 19-passenger gondola, while the lower side lobes feature the Air Cushion Landing System. This system allows the airship to land on virtually any surface, including snow, ice, water, sand, and fields, eliminating the need for traditional transportation infrastructure. The underside fan system can also run in reverse to suck the Z1 to the ground after its landed, adding stability when unloading passengers and cargo. It is designed to fly up to 1,400 nautical miles (2,593 km) on a single filling of compressed hydrogen and carry a payload of more than 23 tons (20.8 tonnes). The Z1 promises to significantly reduce cargo transport costs, potentially by 15-40% compared to traditional fixed-wing aircraft per ton/mile. Potential applications include bringing supplies and materials back and forth to remote sites like Arctic mines and oil and gas operations. With recent purchase orders from Straightline Aviation and Arctic Airships, the AT2 Aerospace Z1 airship appears to be on track for further development and launch. This heralds a potential shift in how we approach transportation, especially in challenging environments. The Z1 isnt just a nostalgic nod to airships of the past; it represents a sophisticated fusion of cutting-edge technology and practical engineering. Its ability to operate independently of traditional runways, coupled with its substantial payload capacity and reduced operational costs, positions it as a game-changer.Imagine a future where remote communities are seamlessly connected, where disaster relief efforts are expedited, and where industrial operations in harsh environments are made significantly more efficient. The AT2 Aerospace Z1 airship offers a glimpse into that future, demonstrating that sometimes, the most innovative solutions come from reimagining established concepts. By blending the timeless principles of buoyancy with modern propulsion and materials, the Z1 is poised to redefine our expectations of air travel and cargo transport, proving that the future of flight might just be a little lighter than we thought. Its a reminder that even in an age of rapid technological advancement, theres still room for the elegant and efficient simplicity of the airship, reimagined for the 21st century. The post AT2 Aerospace Z1 can bridge remote areas with people and cargo first appeared on Yanko Design.
