• The folding iPhones killer feature might be a LiquidMetal hinge
    www.macworld.com
MacworldBack in 2010, when the iPhone was still a small player in the smartphone game, Apple made a move that was seemingly aimed at taking the iPhone to the next level. It purchased worldwide exclusive rights to use material developed by LiquidMetal, a zirconium-based alloy with an amorphous structure used for small high-precision, high-performance parts.Until now, it hasnt been clear why Apple purchased the company. The most notable LiquidMetal product has been the iPhones SIM ejector tool, and it has reportedly been used in some Apple Watch parts as well. However, a new rumor suggests that Apples investment in LiquidMetal could play a major role in the folding iPhone.According to Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is working on a hinge for a folding phone that will use liquid metal instead of traditional metal. According to recent industry research, Apple is focused on improving durability, enhancing screen flatness, and minimizing crease marks in its foldable iPhone design, he writes. To achieve these goals, key components like the hinges will be crafted from liquid metal using a die-casting process. To be clear, the company LiquidMetal does not make metal parts that are actually fluid. Quite the opposite: It specializes in a special die-casting process that produces exceptionally strong, hard, and precise metal parts that do not require further shaping and finishing. The liquid part comes from the casting process and the amorphous atomic structure of the metal before casting, not the final form of the metal.Kuo points to liquid metal purveyor EonTec as the primary beneficiary of Apples decision and doesnt mention Apples own investment in LiquidMetal, but it has surely played a role in the development of the phone.Apple is expected to launch its first folding iPhone in 2026. For the latest news and rumors, stay tuned to our folding iPhone rumor roundup.

  • New AI weather forecasting system called a huge step forward
    www.computerworld.com
Researchers at the University of Cambridge, together with the Alan Turing Institute, Microsoft Research, and the European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasts, have developed a new AI-based weather forecasting system Aardvark Weather that could revolutionize the field of meteorology.Aardvark Weather can apparently provide weather forecasts that are tens of times more accurate, while requiring dramatically less computing power than modern systems. Aardvark is thousands of times faster than all previous methods of weather forecasting, Professor Richard Turner of Cambridges Department of Engineering, who led the research, said in a statement. The AI system achieved this by replacing the entire process of weather forecasting with a single machine-learning model; it can take in observations from satellites, weather stations and other sensors and then generate both global and local forecasts. In the past, a forecast required several different models, each of which relies on a supercomputer and a support team to run. With Aardvark Weather, the same work can be completed in just a few minutes and with a standard desktop computer. The results were published in the journal Nature.

  • OpenAI has released its first research into how using ChatGPT affects peoples emotional wellbeing
    www.technologyreview.com
OpenAI says over 400 million people use ChatGPT every week. But how does interacting with it affect us? Does it make us more or less lonely? These are some of the questions OpenAI set out to investigate, in partnership with the MIT Media Lab, in a pair of new studies. They found that only a small subset of users engage emotionally with ChatGPT. This isnt surprising given that ChatGPT isnt marketed as an AI companion app like Replika or Character.AI, says Kate Devlin, a professor of AI and society at Kings College London, who did not work on the project. ChatGPT has been set up as a productivity tool, she says. But we know that people are using it like a companion app anyway. In fact, the people who do use it that way are likely to interact with it for extended periods of time, some of them averaging about half an hour a day.The authors are very clear about what the limitations of these studies are, but its exciting to see theyve done this, Devlin says. To have access to this level of data is incredible. The researchers found some intriguing differences between how men and women respond to using ChatGPT. After using the chatbot for four weeks, female study participants were slightly less likely to socialize with people than their male counterparts who did the same. Meanwhile, participants who set ChatGPTs voice mode to a gender that was not their own for their interactions reported significantly higher levels of loneliness and more emotional dependency on the chatbot at the end of the experiment. OpenAI currently has no plans to publish either study.Chatbots powered by large language models are still a nascent technology, and its difficult to study how they affect us emotionally. A lot of existing research in the areaincluding some of the new work by OpenAI and MITrelies upon self-reported data, which may not always be accurate or reliable. That said, this latest research does chime with what scientists so far have discovered about how emotionally compelling chatbot conversations can be. For example, in 2023 MIT Media Lab researchers found that chatbots tend to mirror the emotional sentiment of a users messages, suggesting a kind of feedback loop where the happier you act, the happier the AI seems, or on the flipside, if you act sadder, so does the AI.OpenAI and the MIT Media Lab used a two-pronged method. First they collected and analyzed real-world data from close to 40 million interactions with ChatGPT. Then they asked the 4,076 users whod had those interactions how they made them feel. Next, the Media Lab recruited almost 1,000 people to take part in a four-week trial. This was more in-depth, examining how participants interacted with ChatGPT for a minimum of five minutes each day. At the end of the experiment, participants completed a questionnaire to measure their perceptions of the chatbot, their subjective feelings of loneliness, their levels of social engagement, their emotional dependence on the bot, and their sense of whether their use of the bot was problematic. They found that participants who trusted and bonded with ChatGPT more were likelier than others to be lonely, and to rely on it more. This work is an important first step toward greater insight into ChatGPTs impact on us, which could help AI platforms enable safer and healthier interactions, says Jason Phang, an OpenAI policy researcher who worked on the project.A lot of what were doing here is preliminary, but were trying to start the conversation with the field about the kinds of things that we can start to measure, and to start thinking about what the long-term impact on users is, he says.Although the research is welcome, its still difficult to identify when a human isand isntengaging with technology on an emotional level, says Devlin. She says the study participants may have been experiencing emotions that werent recorded by the researchers. In terms of what the teams set out to measure, people might not necessarily have been using ChatGPT in an emotional way, but you cant divorce being a human from your interactions [with technology], she says. We use these emotion classifiers that we have created to look for certain thingsbut what that actually means to someones life is really hard to extrapolate.

  • iPhone fold report resurrects decade-old liquid metal component rumor
    appleinsider.com
A rumor from long ago may finally come true, with liquid metal hinges and bearings predicted to be used in the iPhone Fold.Renders of a possible iPhone foldFoldable screens currently display a very visible crease after they have been used for a time, but it's previously been claimed that Apple has at least reduced this. Now Ming-Chi Kuo is backing that up with a report, seemingly based on his supply chain contacts, about one way Apple is achieving this."[In] order to improve the durability, screen flatness and crease-free screen of the foldable iPhone," writes Kuo on Twitter, "Apple will use liquid metal materials for key component bearings (hinge) and process them through die casting." • The First Berserker: Khazan Everything You Need to Know
    gamingbolt.com
After a successful demo, The First Berserker: Khazan is slated to launch on March 27th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC (with Deluxe Edition owners getting access on March 24th). With its sleek anime aesthetic, fast-paced brutal action and intriguing tale of revenge, it could be a dark horse in an otherwise packed month. Here are 15 things you need to know before picking it up.Dungeon and Fighter ConnectionSince it was first announced, The First Berserker: Khazan has shared an indelible connection to Dungeon and Fighter. Dungeon Fighter Online players will have encountered the disgraced general (no spoilers on how that turns out), but this story plays out during the Pell Los Empires reign. It explores Khazans story and his rise as the infamous berserker after betrayal.EnvironmentsIf youve played the demo, the sheer variety of environments seen thus far has been impressive. Players go from a snowy pass teeming with beasts and soldiers to a spiritual journey on the mountainside and eventually, a dark dungeon full of dragon-like hybrids. Another location was recently revealed in a new trailer the Rovelion Imperial Theater, the home of arts and culture in the Pell Los Empire (or at least it used to be). Now there are traps and nobles of the past lurking in the darkness, seemingly creating hallucinations.CombatFor those who havent played the demo, The First Berseker: Khazans combat is essentially a Souls-like. You have a stamina meter, can execute light and heavy attacks, and claim several sites of the Blade Nexus as checkpoints. Much like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, enemies have a posture gauge (known as Fortitude) that you must break to deal critical damage.Parrying and EvasionParrying and dodging are a given, but timing them is key. A properly executed parry means less stamina lost and stamina will become essential in some boss fights allowing you to maintain the aggression. If you dodge right before an enemys attack lands, youll execute a Brink Dodge, which can be useful in conjunction with certain skills.CounterattacksNot every attack can be parried or dodged, however, and thats where Counterattack comes in. Execute it perfectly and youll perform a Nioh 2-like Burst Counter, which staggers the enemy and regenerates all your stamina. Mess it up, however, and you take tons of damage. Be careful, though, as Elite enemies can also perform Counterattacks (which is as cool-looking as it is frightening).Weapons and SkillsThus far, we know of three weapons that Khazan wields the Spear, Greatsword and dual-wielding a Sword and Axe. Each possesses unique attacks and playstyles, whether you prefer extensive mobility with the Sword and Axe, more range with the Spear or slow but hard-hitting attacks with the Greatsword. You cant swap between weapons (at least, not in the demo), which encourages zeroing in on a build and playstyle. Each weapon also has unique skills, unlocked with skill points, like Ruthless for rapidly slashing away at any enemy with the Sword and Axe, or Breakthrough for charging at an enemy with the Greatsword before bringing it down in a massive swing. My favorite is Moonlight Stance, which creates afterimages for 15 seconds that deal additional damage. Skills consume Spirit, so managing it during a battle along with your stamina and Fortitude is also key.Berserker ModeA recent trailer also revealed what seems to be Berserker Mode for Khazan, which sees him taking on the Blade Phantoms armor and gaining new skills, even seemingly transitioning between multiple weapon types. Not many details have been provided, but it looks sick as hell.Summoning AlliesWhile Dungeon Fighter Online is known for its multiplayer, you wont find such modes here. That doesnt mean you cant summon allies to your cause, however. Available from the third level onwards, the Spirit of Advocacy will fight by your side (and youll probably need it, given the boss). However, like Nioh, theres also the Remnant of Adversity, who you can challenge and earn drops from. They also drop Lacrima of Circulation, which you need to summon allied Spirits.Easy ModeIf the combat and overall difficulty are too much, The First Berserker: Khazan sports an Easy Mode, providing a means to stress less and enjoy the narrative. However, at least in the demo, you must finish the first mission to unlock it. Its unlikely to be different in the game, but regardless, be prepared.TransmogThough its not the be-all, end-all of the action RPG gameplay, loot is important, and so is looking amazing. So what happens if you want to change your looks but retain the same equipment? Transmog is thankfully available to facilitate thisafter you finish your first playthrough, as confirmed by creative director Junho Lee in a Reddit AMA. Why its set up like this is unknown, but its there.New Game+New Game Plus is also available, and itll function more akin to Nioh. While you can enjoy everything in the game within the first playthrough, Lee said higher playthroughs can unlock more options and abilities. Certain restrictions are also lifted, and while that seems to refer to transmog, perhaps there are more game-changing features to discover.Multiple EndingsAnother reason to embark on another playthrough is the multiple endings. Khazan isnt on some casual stroll of the Pell Los Empire and as such, certain decisions may impact the overall narrative. Whether its as involved as, say, the process of unlocking other endings in Elden Ring remains to be seen, but Khazans story seemingly has more than one outcome.PlaytimeWhether youre in it for the story or taking on every challenge, The First Berserker promises a meaty experience. If you pursue the True Ending, it can take more than 80 hours to finish, per Lee. How much this will vary depending on skill (and the amount of grinding previously done in the demo) remains to be seen, but either way, its a long game.Potential Post-Launch FeaturesKhazan is seemingly poised to receive DLC in the future, though the direction, content, and schedule hasnt been finalized. However, Lee confirmed that several modes are being discussed. Potential boss rush or boss rematch features? One can certainly hope.PC RequirementsThe minimum requirements arent too demanding, consisting of an Intel Core i3-6300 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200, 12 GB RAM, and a GeForce GTX 970 or Radeon RX 580 or Arc A580. This is enough to run the game in 1080p/30 FPS at Low settings. The recommended requirements, on the other hand, demand a Core i7-6700K or Ryzen 5 3600, 16 GB RAM, and an RTX 2070, a Radeon RX 5700XT or Arc A750 for 1080p/60 FPS at High settings. You also need 70 GB of installation space with a solid-state drive mandatory all around.
