• Kazuyo Sejima Reimagines a Young Couple's Century-Old Kyoto Home
    www.architecturaldigest.com
When we were building here, a lot of the neighbors asked if it was going to be a restaurant, says Shirato with a laugh, explaining that their 13-foot-long kitchen island is the largest piece made for a private residence by local metalworkers Konbu Brothers. These were some of the many artisansintensely vettedthat Sejima and Tanase engaged for this project. Others were the carpenters, in the southwest of Kyoto, who built a bed, drawers, and stairs out of Japanese cypress, and the craftspeople who replaced the kawara, or roof tiles. Its very tough to keep these crafts alive, says Shirato, explaining that even the vernacular knowledge necessary to build a machiya is slowly slipping away. Preserving a machiya takes a lot of effort, he continues. But we think keeping an existing structure for generations instead of tearing it down and rebuilding is much more sustainable.Swords from the Kamakura period, around 1300, and the edo period, early 1600s, displayed on the Ritzwell sideboard. The painting is by Akiko Kondo, and the Heian period dish sports a kintsugi fix from the 15th or 16th century.Yoshihiro MakinoHear that? asks Brustad, toward the end of dinner. Theres a tapping sound outside. Its the hinoyoujin, or fire watch. Every night people walk the neighborhood clapping bamboo sticks to remind you to put out your fire. Few households still burn them at night, but this centuries-old ritual has persisted. Brustad and Shirato, some of the younger members of the local district association, hope to join in one of these days, finding their place in the tight weave of the neighborhood. In the airy mezzanine space, the antique folding screen was scored at Blue Parrot, a local shop, and the bed and cabinet were designed by Yoshitaka Tanase and produced by a local woodworker in Japanese cypress.Yoshihiro MakinoFor Sejima, it was critical that the houseand its residentsexist in harmony with this community. Early in the process she presented five different design proposals, constructed out of paper. They didnt just depict the house itself but every structure in the surrounding blocks. By studying these models, the architect and her clients could see how the home related to the neighborhood. She wants the building to be contained, Shirato reflects. But also part of the community. This story appears in ADs April issue. Never miss a story when you subscribe to AD.

  • How to Clean Outdoor Cushions So They Look Brand New
    www.architecturaldigest.com
    1. Remove the cushion covers and put them directly in the washing machine.2. After inserting your detergent where indicated by your machine, add a laundry sanitizer in the fabric softener compartment of your machine, or it put directly into your rinse cycleeither way, the bacteria will be killed. (For standard machines, use two capfuls filled to line one of the dosing cup, and for HE machines, use two capfuls filled to line two of the dosing cup.)3. Run a regular laundry cycle and be sure to use the extra rinse function, primarily so the machine will be cleaner for your next load of laundry.4. Run the covers through the dryer on a low heat cycle and let them air dry fully afterward if they are damp. Ensure the inserts of the pillows are completely dry before putting the covers back on.Bleach is safe for use on white outdoor cushions but may cause discoloration on any cushions in other colors.Photo: PBFloyd/Getty ImagesHow often should I clean outdoor cushions? At a bare minimum, a couple of times a season. Ideally, do a quick clean at the start and end of the outdoor season, plus spot cleans in between. (If youre hosting a garden party or cocktail hour, youll definitely want to make sure youve cleaned your outdoor cushions in advance of a guests arrival. Nobody wants to take a seat on mystery stains!)Can I pressure-wash outdoor cushions?Yes and no. Some outdoor cushion upholstery is strong enough to withstand pressure-washing, but others may experience a hurricanes worth of damagewith torn seams, fabric pilling, or even foam ejection. Proceed with caution. If you go this route, use the lowest pressure setting and a wide spray tip and keep a safe distance. How do I clean Sunbrella outdoor cushions? We turned to Blake Collins, director of Sunbrella Care, for insights. To clean outdoor cushions, I recommend mixing 1/4 cup of dish soap with a gallon of water and use a sponge or soft-bristle brush to gently agitate and thoroughly clean fabric seam-to-seam, then rinse and position cushions upright to air-dry and prevent water rings, Collins says. For added protection, consider using a fabric treatment like Sunbrella Restore to help repel water and extend the life of the cushions. What is the easiest way to clean outdoor cushions? If your cushions have removable covers that can be safely washed in a washing machine, then thats the best way. If you need to hand wash the cushions, products like white vinegar, baking soda, Borax, a dish soap like Dawn, or dedicated fabric cleaning products can be used to spot clean the fabric. The cleaning method need not be anything fancy; a soft scrub brush or a sponge should be all you need. What causes black spots on outdoor cushions? The black spots on outdoor cushions and other outdoor fabric are likely either mildew of mold. Both mildew and mold are types of fungus that can form on anything from a plant in the forest to a bathroom wall to a cushion in your outdoor living space, and both can trigger mild to severe allergic and respiratory ailments in humans and animals. These fungi can grow when conditions are moist and at least a few degrees above the freezing point, so they can appear in most seasons in most places. To prevent mold and mildew on outdoor cushions, keep the furniture covered or store the cushions in a shed, garage, or inside when you are not using them. Can I use bleach on outdoor cushions? While of course bleach is safe to use on white outdoor cushions, it may cause discoloration on cushions with colors or patterns. You can use a color-fast bleach product on outdoor fabrics, but its still best to use a spray bottle and test the cleaner on a small portion of the fabric before you use it on an entire cushion, just in case it does cause color issues. What is the best cleaning solution for outdoor cushion covers? In most cases, a blend of white vinegar and baking soda is the best cleaning solution for outdoor cushions. This time-tested duo should be able to cut through build-up and get your cushions looking like new again. If you do need to use a more powerful cleaning product, just make sure you try it on a small area of the cushion before applying it to the prominent affected area or over the entire surface of the fabric to avoid permanently discoloring a cushion cover.

  • A French university is offering scientific asylum for US talent. The brain drain has started | Alexander Hurst
    www.theguardian.com
In six weeks, the Trump administrations rapid scheduled disassembly of American science has been as sharp and deep as its trashing of the USs alliances and goodwill; Earth science, weather forecasting and early warning systems, medical research (including cancer research), Nasa. Academic grants more broadly have been cut, paused and subject to review for a long list of banned words (including such contentious terms as political and women). This has caused universities across the country to reduce their intake of PhD students, medical students and other graduate students, introduce hiring freezes and even rescind some offers of admission. More than 12,500 US citizens currently in other countries on Fulbright research grants recently had their funding paused, along with 7,400 foreign scholars currently hosted in the US, leaving them financially stranded. And, when it came to one foreign academic visiting the US, detaining them and refusing them entry.Even more worryingly, the administration is specifically targeting some universities, including pulling $400m in funding from Columbia University, and $800m from Johns Hopkins, forcing it to lay off 2,000 people. Furthermore, the legally dubious arrest and detention of Mahmoud Khalil, and the cancelling of his green card, is sure to have a chilling effect on foreign students and researchers already in the US and on the desire of others to go there in the future. As Christina Pagel, a German-British professor at University College London, writes: This isnt chaos. Instead, the attacks on research appear to follow a three-pronged objective: to forcibly align science with state ideology; undermine academic independence and suppress dissent; and maintain geopolitical and economic goals. The Saturn V rockets that took US astronauts to space and eventually the moon in the 1960s owed their existence to Operation Paperclip, which brought 1,500 former Nazi scientists (such as Wernher von Braun, the former director of Nasas Marshall Space Flight Center) to the US. In the week after Donald Trumps election, I wondered whether the German philosopher Jrgen Habermas may inadvertently get his wish (of a Europe that unified through opposition to the US) and suggested that Europe position itself to reverse the decades-long transatlantic brain drain by welcoming highly educated American researchers and scientists who were sure to find themselves under attack. This time, there is no moral quandary about it, no Nazi pasts to ignore; only as much advantage to be gained as can be in a world where the EU must hold the ground for liberal democratic society, joined by Canada to the west, and Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand to the east.To some extent, EU governments and institutions are already picking up on the opportunity. For example, on 7 March, the University of Aix-Marseille announced Safe Place for Science, a three-year, 15m programme to bring 15 American scientists working in climate, health and astrophysics to its campus. According to a university spokesperson, more than 60 applications have been received, 30 of them coming within the first 24 hours. The university indicated that it has been in contact with other universities and the French government about expanding scientific asylum on both a national and European level, and to help coordinate welcoming and relocating different researchers.US federal government spending on all research and development (R&D) totalled roughly $195bn in 2024. That sounds imposing, but lets put it into greater context. As of 2023, US GDP was $27.7tn and EU GDP was $26.5tn, when adjusted for purchasing power parity. Taken as a whole, both polities are roughly the same economic size. Lets imagine that the EU were to put real money on the table to lure science of all kinds out of the US and to the continent. It wouldnt need to match $195bn, euro for dollar, in part because more than half the US total is defence R&D, and the EU is already boosting defence spending bigly. So, say it just picked a bold, round number that lends itself well to narrative, storytelling and headlines, and is enough to rope in the cuts happening in the US.A sum of 25bn a year would represent just under 0.1% of the EUs GDP, and even less if the UK, Norway and Switzerland (all of which participate in the Horizon Europe research funding programme) were included. As it is, R&D spending in the EU lags behind the US and a report ordered by the European Commissions research department recently recommended more than doubling Horizon Europes 95bn, seven-year budget. What Im suggesting goes further, yes. But not only is it well within the EUs ability to afford, it would ultimately pay for itself: research found that non-defence R&D spending returned 200% for the US during the postwar period. But let me push the boundary of fantastical again, and suggest that the EU may lure not just American researchers, but American universities themselves. According to the Cross Border Education Research Team, US universities maintain 29 actual campuses in Europe (and far more if you include centres and study abroad programmes). There are dozens of American colleges and universities with enormous endowments that regularly splash out hundreds of millions of dollars at a time on new buildings. If US crackdowns (like the recent demands made of Columbia) on academic freedom, funding, and foreign students and faculties become more frequent, they may find the idea of second campuses in Europe tempting indeed.Alexander Hurst is a Guardian Europe columnistDo you have an opinion on the issues raised in this article? Level HeadsHollow Knight: Silksong gets some Steam changes, and you don't need me to tell you its fans are reacting with calm and restraintThey're ok, I swear - just big fans of GeForce Now.Image credit: Team Cherry News by Mark Warren Senior Staff Writer Published on March 24, 2025 Calm down. Are you calm? This is for your own good. Ok, you may proceed. Another thing that could hint at something happening with Hollow Knight: Silksong has reared its head. This time it's some Steam backend changes, and the Silksong faithful definitely aren't losing their minds again. To be fair, given even the likes of Xbox have been cheekily teasing these poor souls who've been disappointed more often than your parents when you tell them what you're doing with your life, you can't blame them for having their equivalent of a big party over some text that mentions Nvidia GeForce now.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Anyway, let's get into what's kicked their Hornet's nest this time. It's some updates the game's backend got today, March 24, which have been spotted via SteamDB.What do they reveal? Well, that the game's legal lines have been changed to say copyright Team Cherry 2025, rather than the same thing, but with the year 2019. Some assets have also been tweaked, with some seeming to point towards the game being available via Nvidia's GeForce Now streaming service whenever it drops. STEAM CHANGES YOO byu/thelazycoati inSilksongTo see this content please enable targeting cookies.Naturally, the Silksong hive is taking this as the latest sign that actual info about the game might be coming soon, and with Nintendo's early April Switch 2 direct on the immediate horizon, that understandably looks to be where a lot of the hopes are being pinned. Here's hoping the hype doesn't fall flat on its face yet again, leaving the poor Silksongers to keep on wandering the lonely roads of the internet, Silksongless. They've been waiting since at least 2019, to be fair, and endured stuff like cake theories in that time, so you can get why they'll cling to stuff like these Steam updates. Their knees are weak, their arms are heavy, as they wonder what's going on with this game already, did Team Cherry forgetti? Are you still belting out your Silksong of hope with all your heart? Return to Robo-nam?Helldivers 2's Galactic War looks like it could be headed back to the game's most infamous planet, and grizzled vets are wondering what fresh horrors may awaitAssuming it happens, are you ready for Malevelon Creek round two?Image credit: Arrowhead News by Mark Warren Senior Staff Writer Published on March 24, 2025 If you're one of the Helldivers 2 who's long boasted about being a veteran of the game's most famous battle, or are a newer recruit who's only ever heard the stories, it seems you could be in luck. Arrowhead's latest message as the war rages on suggests the fighting's headed back to the corner of the galaxy that's home to the infamous Malevelon Creek. If you're in that second category, and somehow haven't heard folks in-game or on the socials saying stuff like 'Remember the Creek' or 'I left part of myself on the Creek', let me introduce you to one of the first planets that - in Helldivers 2's earliest days last year - earned itself a reputation for particularly fierce fighting. The Automaton-infested Malevelon Creek was quickly nicknamed 'Robot Vietnam', both due to how intense a battleground it was, and its cool Terminator-esque vibes. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Well, having faded into obscurity a bit, it now looks like it could be on the conflict menu once again soon. "The Automaton Incineration Corps has stolen vast swaths of ground from our citizens, burning thousands of toxin-free homes to the ground," reads the message Arrowhead put out after players failed the latest major order, "The Helldivers fought valiantly, but the underhanded opportunism of the Automatons allowed the enemy significant gains. The enemy remains at large.""Reports indicate the enemy's strategic goal is to seize old industrial assets in the Severin Sector, where the Automatons first emerged. Insufficient E-710 was gathered to deploy the Penrose Energy Siphon. The asset remains on standby, inactive as the Meridian Singularity rapidly moves towards Ivis." THEY'RE HEADING FOR THE CREEK! byu/Spacy2561 inHelldiversTo see this content please enable targeting cookies. It's the bit about the Severin Sector that's got folks speculating about a return to Robot Vietnam, since that system's home to five planets - Maia, Durgen, Ubanea, Tibit, and - you guessed it - Malevelon Creek. What will a return to the Creek look like, given all that's changed in the game and all the new gear players have gotten since it last played a major role in the war? Well, that's the question HD2 vets on Reddit are asking. The greenhorns are gonna be disappointed with the Creek," one argued, "When we were there last time it was with the old bots and a lot of new players. It's not gonna be anywhere near as bad this time... I hope.""If we do go back to the Creek, I hope we get some new set pieces to signify the campaign fought there," another player suggested, "Used weapon pods that are overgrown, maybe destroyed objectives that are slowly being rebuilt, completed RTF markers on normal POIs, maybe bunkers that are already opened, but are filled with rubble and debris. Just something to signify that helldivers were here before and fought hard. It'd be a little disappointing to go back and see that nothing significant has changed."Are you keen for Robot Vietnam round two to happen, or would you rather not risk it potentially not hitting the same way it once did? • Tony Hawk Has Reportedly Demanded Bam Margera Be Included In New Game
    www.nintendolife.com
Image: ActivisionWhen Activision announced Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 for release on 11th July 2025, reports began to circulate that suggested original skater Bam Margera may not be included in the new remake.Known for his roles in Jackass and Viva la Bam, Margera's inclusion in Pro Skater 3 + 4 is reportedly back on the cards thanks to none other than Tony Hawk himself. According to The Nine Club skating podcast (thanks, VGC), co-host Roger Bagley claimed that Margera had been added into the game at the last minute following a demand from Hawk.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube799kWatch on YouTube Well, heres what happened. The game was already done. Tony called up Activision and was like hey, were putting Bam in the thing, and they were like hey, we cant.He goes no, youre gonna do it, and basically made them fly Bam back out there to get body-scanned and everything else, and get him back in the game.Naturally, none of this has been officially confirmed at the time of writing, but it would no doubt be welcome news to fans of the original THPS3. Bam Margera was a prominent figure at the time thanks to his TV work, though his life unfortunately took a turn for the worse following the death of his friend and fellow Jackass star Ryan Dunn in 2011.Since then, Margera has been involved in multiple legal issues and has struggled with alcoholism. In 2021, his involvment in Jackass Forever ended during production, with his involvement limited to just a single skit. • 23andMe faces an uncertain future so does your genetic data
    techcrunch.com
DNA and genetic testing firm 23andMe is in turmoil following a 2023 data breach and its ongoing financial decline. The once-pioneering giant now faces an uncertain future as bankruptcy looms over the company, intensifying concerns about what might happen to the genetic data of 23andMes some 15 million customers.Best known for its saliva-based test kits that offer a glimpse into a persons genetic ancestry, 23andMe has seen its value plummet more than 99% from its $6 billion peak since going public in early 2021 after failing to turn a profit. That lack of profit was attributed to waning consumer interest in 23andMes use-once test kits and lackluster growth of its subscription services. The company was also floored by a huge months-long data breach that saw hackers steal the ancestry data of almost 7 million users throughout 2023. The company agreed in September to pay $30 million to settle a lawsuit related to the breach.Less than a week later, 23andMe founder and CEO Anne Wojcicki said she was considering third-party takeover proposals for the company. Wojcicki quickly walked back the statement, instead saying she planned to take the company private. But the damage was done, and all of the companys independent board members resigned with immediate effect. After filing for bankruptcy protection in March 2024, the companys assets including vast banks of DNA data will be sold through a court-supervised sale. Wojcicki also resigned from the company.Where does that leave millions of peoples genetic data?23andMe bound largely by its own rulesAs evidenced by its 2023 data breach, which saw hackers steal information such as users genetic predisposition and ancestry reports, 23andMe collects a ton of information on its users. If youre one of the many millions that have shipped your saliva to 23andMe to learn about your ancestry, you may have assumed that this data will remain private under law, such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. HIPAA, as its known, sets the standards for protecting sensitive health information from being disclosed without a persons knowledge or consent. However, 23andMe is not a company covered under HIPAA. As such, 23andMe is largely bound only by its own privacy policies, which it can change at any time.Andy Kill, a spokesperson for 23andMe, told TechCrunch that the company believes this is a more appropriate and transparent model for the data we handle, rather than the HIPAA model employed by the traditional healthcare industry.A lack of federal regulation and a cluttered mess of state privacy laws ultimately means that if 23andMe faces a sale, the data of millions of Americans is also on the table. The companys privacy policy says that its customers personal information may be accessed, sold or transferred as part of a bankruptcy, merger, acquisition, reorganization, or sale. The fact that customer data is a saleable asset has also been made clear by Wojcicki, who reportedly told investors that 23andMe will no longer pursue its cost-intensive drug development programs and will instead focus on marketing its vast database of customer data to pharmaceutical companies and researchers.23andMe maintains that its data privacy policies would not change in the event of a sale. These policies state that the company will never share users information with insurance companies, or with law enforcement without a warrant. The latter have increasingly turned to third-party DNA companies for genetic information, but 23andMe has so far resisted all U.S. law enforcement requests for such data, according to its long-running transparency report.Potential buyers of 23andMe may have entirely different ideas about how to use the companys potentially valuable trove of DNA data. Privacy advocates at the digital rights group Electronic Frontier Foundation have already urged 23andMe to resist a sale to any company with ties to law enforcement, warning that customers genetics data could be used by police to indiscriminately search for evidence of crimes. Our own commitment to apply the terms of our privacy policy to the personal information of our customers in the event of a sale or transfer is clear: the 23andMe Terms of Service and Privacy Statement would remain in place unless and until customers are presented with, and agree to, new terms and statements and only after receiving appropriate notice of any new terms, under applicable data protection laws, Kill told TechCrunch.Proactively deleting your accountNow as 23andMe faces bankruptcy, there are calls for 23andMe customers to take action now to protect their data from being sold.Californias attorney general Rob Bonta said in a statement after 23andMe filed for bankruptcy that state residents have a right to demand the deletion of their genetic data under state law.Meredith Whittaker, the president of end-to-end encrypted messaging app Signal, said in a post on X: Its not just you. If anyone in your family gave their DNA to [23andMe], for all of your sakes, close your/their account now.Eva Galperin, the director of cybersecurity at the EFF, also warned users to take action. If you have a 23andMe account, today is a good day to login and request the deletion of your data, said Galperin in a post on X.Requesting the deletion of your data on 23andMe is relatively easy.Log in to your 23andMe account and navigate to Settings > Account Information > Delete Your Account. 23andMe will prompt you to confirm your decision, warning that deleting your account is permanent and irreversible. There is an important caveat. As noted in 23andMes privacy policy, account deletion is subject to retention requirements and certain exceptions, which means the company may hold on to some of your data for an unspecified amount of time. For example, 23andMe will retain your genetic information, date of birth, and gender as required for compliance and will retain limited data related to your deletion request, including but not limited to, your email address, account deletion request identifier, communications related to inquiries or complaints and legal agreements.Similarly, if youve already agreed to 23andMe sharing your data for research purposes, you can reverse that consent, but theres no way for you to delete that information. Kill tells TechCrunch that around 80% of 23andMe customers roughly 12 million people consent to participate in its research program.First published on October 19, 2024 and updated since.
