  • iOS 18.4 AirPods Max update will add lossless and ultralow latency audio
    www.macworld.com
MacworldApple announced on Monday that the USB-C-equipped AirPods Max will soon get an update that was inexplicably left off the USB-C model: Users will be able to play lossless audio and ultra-low-latency audio through a wired connection. The new feature will be in a firmware update when iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, and macOS Sequoia 15.4 are released next week.To use the 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio and ultra-low-latency audio, the headphones must be connected to the audio source through a USB-C cable. When Apple updated the AirPods Max with USB-C last September, the new USB-C port was enabled only for charging. The Lightning-equipped AirPods Max are not included in the feature update. The new lossless audio support can be used with Personalized Spatial Audio for a more sonically accurate, uncompressed, and immersive experience, according to an Apple press release. Lossless audio is a key feature for audio producers, while ultralow latency audio is key for gaming and live streams. Apple notes that AirPods Max will become the onlyheadphones that enable musicians to both create andmix in Personalized Spatial Audio with headtracking.Apple also revealed a new 1.2-meter USB-C to 3.5mm audio cable for $39/39/CA$55/AU$65 and is now available in the Apple Store. The cable can be used to connect AirPodsMax to standard headphone audio ports found on devices, airplanes, Macs, and other devices. The cable can also be used with iPhones and iPads to connect to an audio-in port in a car or on speakers.Apple has established that it will regularly update AirPods with new features through firmware updates. Last October, Apple released hearing health features for the AirPods Pro 2 along with the iOS 18.1 update. • Newdery Battery Case for iPhone 16 review: bulky but smartly designed
    www.macworld.com
MacworldAt a glanceExpert's RatingProsHigh-capacity battery packWireless charging inside the caseAffordableConsBulkyOur Verdict For little investment you get a lot of battery power from the Newdery Battery Case, but at the price of added weight and bulk.Price When ReviewedThis value will show the geolocated pricing text for product undefinedBest Pricing TodayPrice When Reviewed35,99While Mophie has always lead the market for iPhone battery cases, Chinese maker Newdery has persevered with quality battery cases for most iPhone models in the past five or so years. It offers a battery case for each of the iPhone 16 range: 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max. Mophie, on the other hand, didnt bother with a case for the 16 Plus when it came to the Mophie Juice Pack for iPhone 16so Plus owners have an easier choice between the two battery cases.DesignThe Newdery Battery Case for iPhone 16 differs from the Mophie Juice Pack for iPhone 16 in a number of wayssome good, some more compromised.Unlike the two-part Mophie design, Newderys battery case is a one-piece. It looks good from the back and provides the necessary screen protection at the front with a raised lip.The back cameras are shielded as the cases battery hump extends higher than the lenses. There are the expected cutouts for all the buttons, mics and speakers, and everything is easily accessible. While Mophie has made its more fragile two-piece design more robust, we still feel safer with Newderys one-section case. There are grips along the side to push the protection even further.Inside, Newdery has dared to think different. While the Mophie Juice Pack continues with the built-in USB-C connector, Newdery uses wireless charging so that there is no risk of jamming the phone into the case too hard and damaging the iPhones charging port.As the charging is wireless, its slower than youd get with the hard connection, but its fast enough for most purposes. The wireless charging occurs within the caseyou cant wirelessly charge the battery case itself. You need to connect the case to a charger via a USB-C cable to refill it ready for the next time.Dominik Tomaszewski / FoundryBecause the Newdery battery has a higher capacity than the Mophie (5000mAh compared to 2800mAh) it is significantly bulkier than the Juice Pack. It is nearly 2cm deep compared to the Mophies 1.6mm depth, and weighs 5oz (143g) compared to 3.6oz (103g). Thats the price you pay for a larger built-in battery.Performance testsThat larger battery might mean a bulker, heavier case but it also brought nearly half as much recharging power again. While the Mophie recharged a faded iPhone 16 Pro back to 50%, the Newdery reached 72%.That might make the difference between getting back to base before the phone again runs out of power, but you do pay for the power with the noticeably bulkier form.Another option is to use of the magnetic battery packs we have tested and reviewed in our roundup of the best iPhone power banks. These wont protect your iPhone like a battery case, but they only have to come with you when you need themalthough battery cases can save the day when you arent expecting to suddenly receive the battery warning of doom.Dominik Tomaszewski / FoundryPriceThe $32.99 / 36.99 Newdery Battery Case is much cheaper than the $99.95 Mophie Juice Pack, as you might expect from a Chinese brand sold predominantly online. Check out the Amazon links here for further discounts. While cheap, we have used Newdery battery cases over long periods of time and have found them reliable.Should you buy the Newdery Battery Case for iPhoneFor little investment you get a lot of battery power from the Newdery Battery Case, but at the price of added weight and bulk. It might be one to keep aside for long journeys if you dont want to lug a power bank around with you, and remember that as a case it offers protection, too.

  • Review: The new M4 MacBook Air is even better for business
    www.computerworld.com
Beneath the hyperbole around Apple Intelligence and intensifying regulation, you might have missed that Apple recently introduced a newMacBook Air equipped with an M4 chip. Its a compelling upgrade to the worlds best-selling laptop, and Ive had time to put it through its paces. Its an important Mac, given that the Air is probably Apples biggest-selling computer. Its journey began back when Apples then-CEO,Steve Jobs drew the first ever model out of a brown paper envelope, stressing the power and portability of the system. We think that this is the future of notebooks. All notebooks will be like this someday, hesaid at that time.He was right, and also wrong, because I dont think theres anything else quite like the MacBook Air at this price. You see, these (from) $999 computers deliver almost equal computational performance when measured in Geekbench 6 to the M1 Max Mac Studio Apple introduced three years ago.I dont know how you see that, but to me, given the extent to which everyone was blown away by just how powerful those Studio Macs were, the fact that you can now put near-equivalent performance under your arm for less than $1,000 should make the M4 MacBook Air popular with consumers and business users alike.Ready for an upgrade?Thats something that matters as Microsoft ends support for Windows 10 later this year, giving lots of PC users a really good opportunity to upgrade to the Mac. Many already areCanalys recently reported that US Mac shipments in Q4 2024 increased 25.9%, year-on-year, even as the PC industry as a whole grew just 5.7%.The Windows refresh cycle provides fertile ground for Apple to target both consumers and businesses that may be open to switching operating systems, Canalys said. The fertility of that ground cannot have been far from Apples mind when it decided to add a 10-core M4 chip to the MacBook Air especially given the speed and energy efficiency that defines the range of every single M-series Mac released. That it managed to reduce the entry-level price by $100 just adds to the appeal.Performance comes at lower costLets roll out the Geekbench 6 benchmarks. They show that, iterationbyiteration, Apple is delivering compelling performance improvements that cement its reputation as the leading PC maker.M1 MacBook Air: 2,346 single-core; 8,356 multi-core.M2 MacBook Air: 2,588 single-core; 9,691, multi-core.M3 MacBook Air: 3,065 single-core; 11,959 multi-core.M4 MacBook Air: 3,833 single-core; 14,871 multi-core.Look at that data. Not only does it illustrate the extent to which Apple Silicon has transformed the Mac, it also shows us just how solid the companys processor development road map has turned out to be. Seeing is believing, and since the first M1 machines appeared, Apple has managed to deliver compelling upgrades on a near-annual basis. It will continue to do so, even as competitors flail in their attempts to catch up on machines that can match Apple on performance, price, and energy consumption. Thanks for the memoryOne big upgrade in this iteration is that Apple doubled the memory inside these systems. Ostensibly to run artificial intelligence in the form of Apple Intelligence, the inclusion of 16GB as the base memory makes for improved performance in everything else you do on your Mac. Dont underestimate the grunt here not only can it handle existing Apple Intelligence operations, but it is plain that once Apple does deliver contextual smarts in Siri, the new Air will be able to handle it, in part thanks to that memory.I also think the combination of a better processor with more built-in memory makes this model a compelling upgrade proposition, even if you are running an M2 MacBook Air, and certainly for M1 users. Of course, if you are using an Intel-based Mac of any kind, then any M-series Mac is a significant upgrade. (You also get a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera for those inevitable video meetings that punctuate most days.)Whats like blue, but not as heavy?Light blue is the new color to show off. Its quite a subtle blue nothing like a sky blue but pleasing all the same. To my mind, its more a blue-tinged silver. But the votes in my house are broadly positive for the new shade, which will no doubt appear in student halls, coffee shops, meeting rooms, and offices near you in the coming months. However, every silver lining comes wrapped up in its very own cloud, and the M4 MacBook Air is no different. The design hasnt shifted one iota its still aluminum, still beautiful, and now features more than 55% recycled content, including a 100% recycled aluminum enclosure. It also means a 13.6-in. display in my test unit, a 2,5601,664-pixel resolution, two Thunderbolt 4, headphone, and one MagSafe 3 port.If you want more display space, youve got it: the M4 Air will run up to two external displays in addition to the built-in Mac display. Once again, this means it can be the heart of all kinds of complex professional tasks; if you want even more performance youll choose a MacBook Pro.So, is this a Pro Mac at a consumer price?Yes, and no. First, it is worth noting that Geekbench currently lists the current M4 MacBook Pro as delivering 3,750 single-core and 14,707 multicores, which basically means the new Air offers close to pro performance, but there are some compromises. Those compromises include a smaller display (compared to a 14.2-in. display), a slightly slower chip with significantly fewer CPU, and GPU cores than in the Pro, less memory and storage upper capacity, and battery life that is four hours shorter. (Youll get 22 hours from a 14-in. M4 MacBook Pro compared to 18 hours from the new Air.)The MacBook Pro also offers much higher memory bandwidth, which means it can handle tougher tasks. The differences basically come down to this: If you are doing computationally intensive work in any profession, youll want to go pro. But if you occasionally need to do something demanding youll be able to achieve it on a MacBook Air, though it might take a bit longer. So, if you have a need for the most robust professional tasks, you should go up the scale, and if you want something thats equal to most challenging tasks, and more than equal for most of the things most people use their computers for, then this is it. It is faster than other PCs in its class with outstanding battery life and speakers smart enough to wrap your ears in a cocoon of spatially balanced sound when you need it.That focus on the user has always been a hallmark of the Air line-up, and the experience of using this one remains just as compelling as it was when that first one jumped out of that brown envelope back in 2010 one of the best in its class.Buying adviceWere running out of superlatives. This is a significant upgrade to an already excellent machine and the addition of an M4 chip just means the worlds best-selling notebook is an even better value than before. I dont believe a PC that offers the combined appeal of these Macs really exists, which means that if you are in the market for a computer upgrade, you should certainly take a look at this. The M4 MacBook Air maintains Apples tradition of notebook excellence. You can follow me on social media! Join me onBlueSky, LinkedIn, andMastodon.

  • ChatGPT use make you feel lonely
    www.computerworld.com
Two new studies from ChatGPT developer Open AI and MIT show that increased use of the chatbot correlates with increased loneliness and less social time with other people, according to Bloomberg.ChatGPT users in the study also reported feeling increasingly emotionally dependent on the chatbot the more often they used it and they perceived their use as increasingly problematic. The first study followed close to 1,000 people for more than a month with varying levels of experience with ChatGPT. They were either given a text version of the chatbot or one of two voice-based versions, which they used for at least five minutes a day. Some were instructed to have open conversations about anything, while others were instructed to have either non-personal or personal conversations with the service. The researchers reportedly saw no difference in results between text-based and voice-based chatbots. The second study analyzed 3 million user conversations from ChatGPT and surveyed how users interacted with the AI tool. The results show that very few people use ChatGPT for emotional conversations.None of the studies have yet been reviewed by other researchers.

  • AI tools help in the creative design and learning process, Oklahoma State research finds
    archinect.com
Research from Oklahoma State UniversityProfessor of Interior Design Tilanka Chandrasekera has decisively shown multiple ways in which AI-enhanced design tools can help students better tap into the creative process. In an article he submitted to the International Journal of Architectural Computing, AI software was shown to accelerate learning when compared to a control group of students who were assigned a similar task without the aid of technology.Image credit: Oklahoma State University, CC BY-NDImage credit: Oklahoma State University, CC BY-NDThough encouraging, Chandrasekera admits that his students may still be overreliant on AI to a fault in terms of their critical thinking capacities. The research comes on the heels of a new AIA study that suggested professional architects are still reluctant to catch on despite its widespread industry acceptance. • Construction starts 19% lower last month than same time in 2024
    archinect.com
Total US construction starts were 19% lower in February 2025 versus February 2024, according to a new report by ConstructConnect. Total nonresidential construction starts last month were 10% lower than February 2024, while total residential starts last month were 31.2% lower than February 2024.Higher inflation elevates borrowing costs for owners and developers, erodes the profitability of future construction projects, and with it, hobbles new construction demand, the platform said, analyzing the findings. The report also identifies a West-East divide in construction activity. Construction spending in the West and Mountain regions is down 40% from one year ago, though California is only down 9%. Meanwhile, Eastern and Southeastern regions are down approximately 20%. Spending is most substantial along the East Coast between Maine and New Jersey, the report notes, with the New England and Middle Atlantic regions both reporting year-to-date growth of over 25%.The report comes one we...

  • Next God of War is a Smaller Side-Story, Out This Year Rumour
    gamingbolt.com
While Sony has begun celebrating the 20th anniversary of the God of War franchise, Giant Bombs Jeff Grubb has reported that there will be a new smaller-scale side-story project that will focus on the life of Kratos in Greece.OK. Everyone keeps asking about this, so Ive tried to find out more, posted Grubb on Bluesky. Theres still a Greek God of War thing coming out this year, but its not a remaster collection. Its a new side-story project.Following up on this, Grubb has also said that something related to a remastered release of the original God of War trilogy might come in the days surrounding the anniversary celebrations. A State of Play surrounding these remasters has reportedly not in the works.I was never told about a Remaster collection, but I asked a source about the rumours (that I saw were focused on a collection) and they told me that nothing God of War would happen at the State of Play but something could show up at the anniversary. The side-story project that Grubb spoke about could be the God of War sequel that was reported to be in the works back in February. According to those reports, the title is set to carry forward the themes of fatherhood from the recent God of War titles by focusing on the relationship between a young Kratos and his father.Since Kratos wasnt aware that his father was Zeus until the events of God of War 2, it is likely that the father figure that Kratos will interact with in this title will instead be a mortal that was tasked with raising him in Sparta. There were also rumours about a God of War game that would take place in ancient Egypt, following up from the last two titles revolving around Norse mythology, while the franchise originally focused on the Greek pantheon.Sony, along with Sony Santa Monica, recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of the God of War franchise with an exhibition and panel at Galaxy Nucleus. While no new games were announced over the weekend, the event did follow the release of the Dark Odyssey Collection release for God of War Ragnark. As part of this release, God of War Ragnark players can adorn Kratos in a black and gold reminiscent of how he is portrayed in some of the older titles flashbacks. The update also brought with it a new armour set for Kratos as well as Atreus and Freya. It also features new appearances for the Leviathan Axe, Blades of Chaos, and Draupnir Spear. In the meantime, a TV adaptation of God of War is currently in the works at Amazon Prime. While the show is yet to release its first episode, Amazon has already ordered a second season. For more details about God of War, check out our review of the soft reboot on the PS4 and PC, as well as our review God of War Ragnarok on the PS5 as well as its eventual PC release.OK.
