• Waymo plans robotaxi launch in Washington, DC in 2026
    www.theverge.com
Waymo announced that Washington, DC will be its next robotaxi city. The company aims to launch its Waymo One ridehailing service in the nations capitol in 2026 though it acknowledged that it will first need to change the city law prohibiting fully autonomous vehicles without safety drivers. Currently, companies that want to test autonomous vehicles in DC are required to have a human driver behind the steering wheel in case something goes wrong. Tech advocates have been pressing the city council to loosen the restrictions to allow fully autonomous vehicles on public roads. A spokesperson for the DC transportation department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Alphabet-owned companys manually driven vehicles have been spotted around DC since last year. A Waymo product manager told a local news outlet that the company was primarily focused on neighborhoods like Dupont Circle, Foggy Bottom, and Penn Quarter. Waymo has not commented on the size of its service area nor which neighborhoods it is targeting if it launches next year. The Alphabet-owned companys manually driven vehicles have been spotted around DC since last year.Launching a robotaxi service in the heart of the federal government is a risky move. The feds have largely taken a back seat in regulating autonomous vehicles, leaving it to the states to develop their own rulebooks for safe deployment. Legislation that would dramatically increase the number of AVs on the road has been stalled in Congress for over seven years, with lawmakers at odds over a range of issues, including safety, liability, and the right number of exemptions from federal motor vehicle safety standards. But beyond that, DC is its own city with its own transportation challenges. It has some of the worst traffic congestion in the US thanks to an ever-expanding population and stagnate infrastructure. Waymo hasnt said how many vehicles it intends to bring to DC. Waymo currently operates its driverless ridehailing vehicles in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix. It recently launched a partnership with Uber in Austin, and it plans to expand that deal to Atlanta later this year. It also plans to operate robotaxis in Silicon Valley and Miami. In DC, customers will use the companys ridehail app, Waymo One, to summon driverless vehicles. Waymo currently provides 200,000 passenger trips a week using the app. DC has seen some autonomous testing before. Cruise, General Motors now-defunct AV subsidiary, tested several of its vehicles there. Another defunct company, Ford-backed Argo AI, has also previously tested autonomous vehicles in the district. Waymo markets itself as a safer option than human-driven vehicles. The company has released insurance data that shows its vehicles cause less property damage and fewer bodily injuries when they crash than human drivers.See More:

  • Nvidias AI assistant is here to optimize your gaming PC
    www.theverge.com
Nvidias G-Assist was originally anApril Fools prank in 2017 before becoming a real tech demo last year and a functioning AI assistant for RTX GPU owners today. Project G-Assist is now available inside the Nvidia app, and will help to optimize game and system settings, measure frame rates, and even change the lighting on connected devices.G-Assist works as an AI assistant through voice or text prompts, so you can ask questions like How does DLSS Frame Generation work? and the assistant will give you a ChatGPT-like output. Where it gets a lot more interesting is the ability to ask G-Assist to optimize games for the best performance or image quality, or have it control the lighting of supported devices from Logitech, Corsair, MSI, and Nanoleaf. You can even ask G-Assist to analyze and optimize your entire PC, so it will detect if a game has a frame rate limiter, whether performance of your GPU is limited, and what you can do to improve overall performance. It can even detect if refresh rates arent maxed out on a display and recommend options like overclocking a GPU or lowering in-game resolutions to hit a desired frame rate.G-Assist uses a local small language model that requires nearly 10GB of space for the assistant functions and voice capabilities. The AI assistant works on a variety of RTX 30-, 40-, and 50-series desktop GPUs, but youll need a card with at least 12GB of VRAM.G-Assist is available as an optional part of an update to the Nvidia app that also includes new DLSS override options and the ability to adjust display scaling and color settings. You can download Nvidias app right here.

  • Step Inside the Newly Unveiled Private Quarters of Henry Clay Frick
    www.elledecor.com
On January 27, 1914, the interior designer Elsie de Wolfe sent a brazen business pitch to one of the worlds wealthiest men. Please dont forget me!! she wrote to the industrialist Henry Clay Frick. I am specially good at detail and the fitting up and the comfort of womens rooms, the intimate little touches that no mere man, no matter how clever he may be, can ever know. The ploy worked, and with that, the doyenne of American decor inserted herself into one of the most coveted commissions of the Gilded Age: the decoration of a suite of rooms in Fricks newly built neoclassical mansion on Fifth Avenue between 70th and 71st streets. On April 17 the Frick Collection will reopen to the public after a four-year renovation of the museums home: an Indiana limestone mansion designed by Carrre and Hastings that has been updated and expanded by Selldorf Architects with Beyer Blinder Belle Architects and Planners. There is a refreshed reception hall, an auditorium for lectures and concerts, and a restored Fifth Avenue faade graced by magnolia trees planted in the 1930s that should bloom on cue for the reopening.JASON SCHMIDTThe paneling by the workshop of Andr Carlhian was restored to its original cream hue.But those in the know will head straight to the Grand Staircase, where a gold rope has blocked visitors since the mansion became a museum in 1935, and ascend past the stair halls soaring pipe organ to the second floor. This is where Henry Clay Frick lived with his wife Adelaide Howard Childs Frick and their daughter Helen Clay Frick. These private quarters will be revealed to visitors for the first time in the museums history. In a suite of exquisite spaces, the Boucher RoomAdelaides former boudoirstands apart. It gets its name from eight allegorical panels painted in the Rococo style by Franois Boucher and his workshop. This serene space, with its cream palette, 18th-century furnishings, and Svres porcelains, must have been a respite for Adelaide, whose bedroom was nearby.JASON SCHMIDTThe west walls boiserie and mirrored cabinet were missing and have been reproduced based on archival images. But the history of the Boucher Room has been anything but harmonious. Fricks wealth, and his decision in 1915 to turn the home into a museum after his death, created a feeding frenzy of decorative arts professionals intent on getting in on the action. Just as de Wolfe was finishing the design of Adelaides boudoir, the British art dealer Joseph Duveenwho also sold the Fricks his Fragonard panelspersuaded them to dismantle the space and install the Boucher artworks with new boiserie paneling by French decorative arts specialist Andr Carlhian. Frick died of a heart attack in 1919, having lived in his mansion for just five years. When the museum opened in 1935, four years after Adelaides death, the second floor was converted into offices. The Boucher Roomincluding the panels, the parquet de Versailles floor, and some of the furniturewas moved to the first floor for public viewing, where it remained until 2020, when the Frick was closed for the pandemic, followed by its major renovation. Ira W. Martin / Courtesy Frick Collection / Frick Art Research Library Archives (Boucher Room 1927)The Boucher Room as it appeared in 1927.Xavier F. Salomon, the museums deputy director and Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator, led the efforts to restore and open the second floor. It was his idea to bring the Boucher Room back to its original location. People thought he was cuckoo, says Aimee Ng, the Fricks John Updike Curator. It was highly laborious and very costly. But it was the one chance to do it.The museums chief conservator, Joseph Godla, enlisted period room specialists Traditional Line to disassemble the Boucher Room and bring it back upstairs via the Grand Staircase. The woodwork around the panels had to be refitted, an entire wall of cabinetry recreated, and the draperies rewoven on 19th-century French looms. One of the biggest discoveriesby paint analyst Susan Buckis that the room wasnt originally blue. It was cream with a stri glaze, says Godla, who had the hue recreated. Details of the Boucher RoomNow it looks much as it did in Adelaides time, with its blue silk divan unearthed from more than eight decades in storage, antique marble busts, and cherubic Boucher children in a space with windows that look out directly at Central Park. On the same floor the familys breakfast room, bedrooms, and sitting rooms have all been extensively restored and turned into galleries. Even in a museum filled with Vermeers and Rembrandts, the Fricks private quarters are a unique draw, offering a glimpse into life as it was lived by the wealthiest in the Gilded Age. The house itself, Ng says, was Fricks largest work of art. This story originally appeared in the April 2025 issue of Elle Decor. • SAP becomes Europes most valuable company, ASML holds fourth place
    thenextweb.com
Just five months after surpassing ASML, German software giant SAP has overtaken Novo Nordisk to become Europes most valuable listed company.SAPs shares rose 1.6% on Monday, bringing its market cap to 313bn. That was just enough to nudge Danish weight loss drugmaker Novo off the top spot.SAPs stock has risen more than 40% in the past year, amid booming demand for its AI-driven enterprise resource planning software (ERP). The cloud-based software centralises business data, allowing multiple departments to access and share information in one place. In contrast, Novo is having a tougher time on the stock market. Novos flagship product is Ozempic, a weight loss drug championed by celebrities and the ultra-wealthy, including Elon Musk. However, trials of the firms newest weight loss therapy, CagriSema, havent generated the same excitement. The drug was shown to be less effective than anticipated, causing shares to drop 50% from their 2024 high.Novo isnt the only company feeling the impact of SAPs stock rally. In October, the software firm rode overtook ASML to become Europes most valuable tech company.Check It OutASML, based in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, makes chip-making equipment for most of the worlds largest semiconductor companies. As the only firm that manufactures the EUV lithography machines required to produce the worlds most advanced computer chips, the Dutch business has become an investor darling. However, ASMLs shares plummeted dramatically in in October, wiping 50bn off its market cap in one fell swoop. The plunge came after the Dutch firm said it did not receive the expected number of orders for its lithography machines and expects fewer net sales for 2025 than previously estimated. That news also sparked a global sell-off on chip stocks, as investors worried that demand may be faltering. However, analysts were quick to point out that weak orders at ASML were more a sign that chipmakers had been stockpiling chips than a longer-term problem.Since then, ASMLs stock has soared, plunged, and risen again. In January, shares jumped as much as 12% the largest increase in nearly five years following a surge in order bookings. The company currently ranks as Europes fourth most valuable, with Paris-based LVMH in third place behind SAP and Novo. The shifting fortunes of Europes biggest companies reflect the volatility of todays global markets. • Apple and others face ruinous liability from TikTok ban, Trump is warned
    9to5mac.com
A group of US senators have written to President Trump to warn him that his handling of the TikTok ban is leaving Apple, Google, and Oracle exposed to ruinous legal liability. The three companies are potentially at risk of being fined up to $850B (yes, billion not million) for continuing to offer the app despite it being banned from the US The story so farThe law requiresthe app to be sold to an American companyUntil that happens, TikTok remains banned in the USThat is, the app can be used, but US companies cant host it or offer it for downloadTikTokbriefly went offlinein the USTrump issued an executive orderpausing enforcementof the lawBut the law remains in effect, and Trumps orderis probably unlawfulApple didnt accept Trumps assurance and kept it out of the App StoreOracle chose to break the law to continue hosting it in the USApple later accepted an assurance from the DOJ and returned it to the App StoreApple and others face ruinous liabilityThree US senators have now written to Trump warning him that his handling of the matter is leaving three US tech giants exposed to unprecedented financial liability.Although we continue to oppose the TikTok ban, it is unacceptable and unworkable for your Administration to continue ignoring the requirements in the law, as you did in January by extending the divestment deadline to April 5 [][Instead of legally extending the deadline] you directed the Department of Justice to not enforce the law for 75 days. This prescribed non-enforcement of the TikTok ban was not only unlawful but also raised serious questions about TikToks future, as the law imposes liability up to $850 billion on companies for facilitating TikToks continued operations in the United States, such as Oracle for providing cloud computing services to TikTok and Apple and Google for distributing TikTok in their respective app stores. Moreover, the statute of limitations for violations of the Act is five years. As a result, even if Oracle, Apple, or Google were confident that your executive order would protect them from ruinous legal liability for violating the TikTok ban during the 75-day period, a future administration could reverse that decision. The letter also warns that one of the potential solutions proposed by Trump Oracle taking a small stake in the company and being responsible for safeguarding the data of US users would not be compliant with the law.The senators urge Trump to work with Congress to legally extend the deadline.Highlighted accessoriesPhoto byRobonUnsplashAdd 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. • Apple Maps Look Around cars will now also take photos to help train Apple Intelligence models
    9to5mac.com
You may have seen Apple Maps survey cars in your area before. As they drive around, the cars take photos and 3D scans to generate ground truth data that can be used to improve map accuracy and offer features like Look Around, Apples equivalent of Google Street View. But now the data collected from these cars will also have another purpose. In an updated disclosure on the Apple Maps Image Collection website, Apple says that starting this month, imagery from its vehicle surveys will also be used to train generative AI models, like those used for Apple Intelligence features such as Image Playground and Clean Up.Apple Maps collects photos through vehicle surveys, using cars equipped with an array of cameras, and pedestrian surveys, where contractors walk around areas wearing special equipment on a backpack. The Image Collection website details where Apple plans to visit over the next few months; it returns to the same locations periodically to refresh its data as needed. The text at the top of that page has not changed for a long time, until sometime earlier this month when the new paragraph was added about using the data to train AI models.Heres the newly added message:In addition to improving Apple Maps and the algorithms that blur faces and license plates in images published in Look Around feature, Apple also will use blurred imagery collected during surveys conducted beginning in March 2025 to develop and improve other Apple products and services. This includes using data to train models powering Apple products and services, including models related to image recognition, creation, and enhancement. As always, Apple protects the privacy of individuals while collecting these photos. This includes blurring any visible faces or license plates. The blurred versions are what will be contributed to the AI data sources. The current set of Apple Intelligence features includes a few different features that rely on image generation models. Clean Up is available through the Photos app, and allows users to quickly remove distracting background objects from a photo. Image Playground lets you type in a few keywords and generate a new image in an animation, sketch or illustration style. And Image Wand helps improve your documents and notes, by creating an accompanying image based on a rough line sketch using the Apple Pencil. The Photos app also has vastly improved image recognition capabilities on Apple Intelligence-capable devices, improving the accuracy of keyword search and enabling the ability to create Memory Movies based on a prompt from the user.Add 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. • AI-Powered SaaS Security: Keeping Pace with an Expanding Attack Surface
    thehackernews.com
Mar 25, 2025The Hacker NewsSaaS Security / Artificial IntelligenceOrganizations now use an average of 112 SaaS applicationsa number that keeps growing. In a 2024 study, 49% of 644 respondents who frequently used Microsoft 365 believed that they had less than 10 apps connected to the platform, despite the fact that aggregated data indicated over 1,000+ Microsoft 365 SaaS-to-SaaS connections on average per deployment. And that's just one major SaaS provider. Imagine other unforeseen critical security risks:Each SaaS app has unique security configurationsmaking misconfigurations a top risk.Business-critical apps (CRM, finance, and collaboration tools) store vast amounts of sensitive data, making them prime targets for attackers.Shadow IT and third-party integrations introduce hidden vulnerabilities that often go unnoticed.Large and small third-party AI service providers (e.g. audio/video transcription service) may not comply with legal and regulatory requirements, or properly test and review code.Major SaaS providers also have thousands of developers pushing changes every day. Understanding each SaaS app, assessing risks, and securing configurations is overwhelming and inhumanly possible. And much of it is just noise. Perhaps nothing malicious is going on at scale, but small details can often be overlooked.Traditional security approaches simply cannot scale to meet these demands, leaving organizations exposed to potential breaches.AI: The Only Way to Keep UpThe complexity of SaaS security is outpacing the resources and effort needed to secure it. AI is no longer optional, it's essential. AI-driven security solutions like AskOmni by AppOmniwhich combine Generative AI (or GenAI) and advanced analyticsare transforming SaaS security by: Delivering instant security insights through conversational AI. Investigating security events efficiently. Turning complex SaaS security questions into clear, actionable answers. Visualizing risks for deeper understanding. Breaking language barriersmulti-lingual support enables security teams to interact with AI in Japanese, French, and English. With multi-lingual support, teams worldwide can interact with security data in their native languageenhancing accessibility and response times. For example, with its ability to stitch together context from disparate data points, AskOmni can notify administrators about issues caused by overprovisioning of privileges, taking into account access patterns, sensitive data, or compliance requirements, and guide them through the remediation process. Beyond typical threat notifications, AskOmni alerts administrators to new threats, explaining potential consequences and offering prioritized remediation steps. The Power of AI + Data DepthHigh-quality data is the fuel that powers GenAI, but it's often in short supply. While GenAI is increasingly used to create synthetic data for simulations, detection testing, or red-teaming exercises, the quality of that data determines the effectiveness of the outcomes. Generative models require clean, relevant, and unbiased datasets to avoid producing inaccurate or misleading results. That's a major challenge in cybersecurity domains where high-fidelity threat intel, logs, and labeled incident data are scarce or siloed. For instance, building a GenAI model to simulate cloud breach scenarios demands access to detailed, context-rich telemetrysomething that's not always available due to privacy concerns or lack of standardized formats. But GenAI can be a powerful tool that can automate threat research to accelerate incident reporting, helping streamline workflows for researchers, engineers, and analysts alike. Its success, however, depends on solving the data quality and availability gap first. In SaaS security, finding fast, actionable answers traditionally means sifting through data, which can be time-consuming and requires expertise.AI is only as effective as the data it analyzes. The ability to analyze security events allows AI to provide deep visibility into SaaS environments and detect threats with greater accuracy. Security teams benefit from AI's ability to prioritize risks, correlate complex security observations, and provide recommendations grounded in real-world expertise. With 101+ million users secured and 2+ billion security events processed daily, AppOmni ensures:Deep visibility into SaaS environmentsAccurate risk detection and prioritizationActionable security insights grounded in expertiseReal-World Impact: AI in ActionA global enterprise recently leveraged AI to assess its complex SaaS environment. With just a few prompts, AskOmni efficiently analyzed the system and highlighted key areas for focus. AskOmni provided the following insights that one customer was able to immediately action and remediate:An application bypassing IP restrictions: a critical misconfiguration.Unauthorized self-authorization in Salesforce: a major security gap.Outdated high-risk applications: flagged before they could be exploited.Without AI, identifying these risks would have taken hours or been missed entirely. The Present and Future Belongs to AI-Driven SaaS SecurityAI is not just enhancing the security of SaaS applications it's redefining what is possible. Organizations using AI-powered security tools will gain a critical edge in protecting their data and staying ahead of cyber threats.Stop searching, start asking. • How WFH and RTO Burnout Differ
    www.informationweek.com
Lisa Morgan, Freelance WriterMarch 25, 20258 Min Readdesigner491 via Alamy StockTodays professionals are under constant pressure to improve their efficiency as the pace of business accelerates. Burnout is a common thing as workers try to multitask across several platforms and communication channels, often simultaneously, amid personal challenges such as caregiving and in-office politics. Notably, burnout symptoms differ, depending on whether employees work from home (WFH) or have been subject to return to office (RTO) mandates.Burnout differs between settings and how an employee is working, says Nicole Issa, founder and licensed psychologist at The Center for Dynamic and Behavioral Therapy. Remote workers can experience burnout due to a lack of work-life boundaries, social isolation and the pressure to be constantly available via tech. Office-based employees often struggle with long commutes, loss of autonomy, and workplace stressors such as micromanagement or rigid schedules. Both environments become a perfect storm for burnout, but the triggers do differ.Justina Raskauskiene, human resource team lead at ecommerce marketing platform Omnisend, agrees. How burnout manifests depends on the work environment, says Raskauskiene. Remote workers often risk blurring the lines between work and personal life, feeling like they [must] always be on, or unable to distance themselves from work. All of this makes it more likely theyll work overtime. Plus, its no secret that fewer in-person interactions often equal poorer emotional well-being. In-office employees, on the other hand, may struggle with burnout due to a demanding company culture, excessive workloads or even the stress of a mandatory RTO policy. Reduced flexibility always carries the risk of contributing to employees stress and dissatisfaction.Related:Many employees are now in the sandwich generation -- caregiving for children, parents or both.As our population ages, more and more employees will become caregivers. This isnt just a personal crisis; its a ticking time bomb for our economy, says Jennifer Fink, community educator at Alzheimer's Association. Seventy three percent of employees have some sort of caregiving responsibilities. Employees with caregiving responsibilities cost their employers an estimated 8% - an additional $13.4 billion per year! By creating a caregiving-friendly workplace, organizations can unlock employee potential, reduce frustration and boost their bottom lines. [C]reating a caregiving-friendly culture isnt expensive especially when the return on the investment is considered.Related:Katie Roland, chief human resources officer at KCSA Strategic Communications, says burnout occurs when employees feel they are giving more than they are getting. It can happen because they are actually overprogrammed and dont feel compensated enough, or because they are working in a hostile environment and are masking all day, says Roland. It can be because they have responsibilities in life and at work, and they do not have the flexibility to manage both the way they feel they need to, making them feel constantly inadequate. Essentially, burnout is exhaustion. Many seasoned leaders are instinctively doubling down on RTO, implementing technology to oversee productivity, and demanding respect. What organizations need to understand is that employees who are trusted to do their job, and manage their life as needed, will produce far more for you than someone you try to control and monitor, says Roland. Nobody likes to be micromanaged. Instead figure out how to partner with your employees to find solutions that work on both ends. What HR/Hiring Managers Should Do About ItSusan Snipes, head of people at Remote People, says HR leaders need to be prepared to address burnout in all its forms for both in-office and remote team members.Related:Flexibility is the word of the day! Flexibility should be incorporated into all aspects of the employee experience from benefits to policies and procedures, says Snipes. Benefits like hybrid work, flexible schedules, and mental health days go a long way toward preventing employee burnout.Nicole Issa, The Center for Dynamic and Behavioral TherapyNicole Issa, The Center for Dynamic and Behavioral TherapyThe Center for Dynamic and Behavioral Therapys Issa suggests that chief human resources officers (CHRO) and hiring managers could approach burnout as a strategic issue rather than individual failings. This means being proactive about identifying risk factors and offering flexibility where possible, says Issa. Trying to build a company culture that prioritizes well-being should be top of the list for companies now. For remote employees, organizations should set clear expectations around availability, encourage a digital detox and provide routes for social connection. For in-office workers, offering hybrid working models, focusing on meaningful in-person collaboration and ensuring workload balance is key.Utilizing Data Is Also ImportantAbsenteeism, tardiness, lack of vacation usage, etc. all can help identify the potential issue -- there may be an issue with individuals or potentially managers, says Fran Maxwell, global lead at business consulting firm Protiviti. If they have a robust people analytics function, they can proactively determine which employees could start to become burnt out and can work with their managers to proactively support their employees. This would include looking at time, assuming the organization tracks time, or more simply looking at vacation time accrued and taken.MDR provider Expel discovered that quantifying workloads creates a common language between technical teams and business leaders. According to Amy Rossi, chief people officer at Expel, the most effective solution combines data with empathy.Organizations need metrics to identify burnout risks objectively, but they also need leaders who understand the human elements at play, says Amy Rossi, chief people officer at Expel. By adapting capacity utilization formulas to track workloads, teams can turn burnout from an abstract concern into concrete data that can inform staffing, scheduling, and resource allocation decisions. This approach has revolutionized how we manage and reduce burnout across both remote and in-office settings.Omnisends Raskauskiene says HR can monitor employee sentiment and job satisfaction through surveys and by encouraging leaders to keep an eye on employees moods.Educate them how to notice early burnout signs and react appropriately, says Raskauskiene We also encourage managers to hold regular one-on-ones, where both sides can share any struggles or concerns. Ultimately, it comes down to fostering a culture of open communication and direct feedback. In addition to establishing clear work hour timeframes, Omnisend promotes emotional well-being initiatives, such as offering psychological support and funding therapy.Provitis Maxwell recommends that leadership model the right behaviors and ensure they demonstrate that taking time away from work is both encouraged and important. He also says organizational leaders should ensure managers are properly trained on spotting burnout signs and how to prevent and support employees that are showing symptoms. However, leaders need to be patient.Fran Maxwell, ProtivitiFran Maxwell, ProtivitiBe intentional and start with leaders. Clearly articulate the expected behaviors at each level within the organization and hold each other accountable for those behaviors, says Maxwell. It is important to remember that its not going to change overnight, and people need to be communicated to, at a minimum, seven different times before the change will sync in.Alzheimer's Associations Fink warns that caregiving is tough -- a juggling act that can drain a person emotionally, physically and financially. When youre constantly putting out fires for others, your own well-being often takes a backseat. Neglecting yourself hurts everyone, says Fink. Thirty to 40% of caregivers struggle with depression and emotional stress. Theyre more likely to be in poor health, which means higher healthcare costs for your company. Taking care of your caregivers just makes sense. Its an investment in your people that always pays off in the end.For WFH employees, Mike Szczesny, owner and vice president at EDCO Awards & Specialties, recommends having clear working time boundaries and promoting the need to step away from the desk for regular breaks to alleviate always-on fatigue. Also promote virtual activities that build up a sense of belonging in the team and align goals for a greater purpose. For in-office employees, organizations should shift their attitudes toward working hours and consider more flexible hybrid arrangements. They should also create work environments that make people more productive while also enabling them to relax and provide reassurance to address issues concerning being present in the office for long periods of time.He also says active internal organizational strategies for preventing burnout should include regular pulse surveys, encouraging use of mental health services, and granting employees the freedom to customize their job.People operations or talent acquisition leaders and all other leaders must act with compassion, candor and genuine appreciation of their employees actual requirements, says Szczesny. Applying bespoke solutions, encouraging collaboration and giving control to employees can improve resilience and productive behavior that is sustainable over the long term.Lisa Sterling, chief people officer at survey and people analytics company Perceptyx, says organizational leadership should be open and direct about burnout.Talking about the symptoms and signs openly demonstrates to people that its important and top of mind. Further, it is important to establish clear expectations as well as boundaries, so people know what to expect. Leaders [must] demonstrate the desired behaviors first and foremost, says Sterling. Create a space for individuals to lean on and receive support from one another. By fostering these relationships people can leverage each other and share their feelings and thoughts with one another which can lead to a culture of empathy and fostering a sense of belongingness. What Happens When Burnout Is IgnoredIgnoring burnout can be very costly to an organization, and it doesnt always take the form of quiet quitting.Ignoring burnout will eventually have costly consequences for businesses when its not dealt with, says The Center for Dynamic and Behavioral Therapys Issa. Employees who feel unsupported will disengage, leading to quiet quitting and high turnover. The best employees are often the first to leave when they feel undervalued or overworked. This can set off a vicious cycle of higher workloads and reduced morale.Instead, companies should be creating a culture of psychological safety where employees feel heard and supported.A company's negligence in fixing persistent burnout patterns will result in lower employee output, greater employee attrition and a lesser reputation for the firm as an employer, says EDCO Awards & Specialties Szczesny. Not addressing burnout during these times of vigorous competition for talent may translate to the loss of valuable employees to firms that take their health and wellbeing seriously.About the AuthorLisa MorganFreelance WriterLisa Morgan is a freelance writer who covers business and IT strategy and emergingtechnology for InformationWeek.
