Working intuitively while focusing on the environment and our place within it, she merges organic motifs and animals with humans and historical references. The inherent simplicity of a blank piece of paper is a compelling attribute for Peterson, who is fascinated by the possibilities of texture, pattern, and the relationship between positive and negative space. Originally, the artist made drawings on large sheets, which she began to cut into in order to rearrange compositional elements. She became increasingly interested in the art of the incision and removed other media altogether.Lost and SearchingMy choice of paper echoes the idea of the fragility that I want to convey as I look at the precariousness of ecological systems, Peterson tells Colossal. The works structural integrity is, at times, reliant on its interconnectivity; if elements disconnect, the entire system is in threat of collapsing. An overarching theme in Petersons work revolves around interconnectionboth natural and human-madehighlighting how our global trade systems, manufacturing, and agriculture are fundamentally reliant on our environment, even as they contribute to an ever-growing climate crisis. She often combines human interactions with botanical details, like a sunken ship in Lost and Searching or the salient history of European colonialist expansion in Empire Builder. The artist is interested in our global systems as something of untamed wonder, a gaze that was once reserved for the natural world, she says. She often juxtaposes botanical details with human-made structures, such as ships or buildings. Nature is now often seen as contained patchwork or a constructed binary to a technological world that is now the wild frontier.Petersons work is currently on view in Nordic Echoes Tradition in Contemporary Art at Scandinavia House, which runs from April 5 to August 2 in New York City. The show celebrates contemporary folk arts from the Upper Midwest, featuring more than 50 works by 24 artists. • Protect your genetic data: Urgent steps after 23andMe bankruptcy

Tech Protect your genetic data: Urgent steps after 23andMe bankruptcy Take these action steps next to protect your DNA rights and privacy Published March 25, 2025 10:00am EDT close Idaho murder case DNA issues raise questions about 23andMe, Ancestry DNA Former prosecutor and defense attorney Robert Schalk breaks down Idaho murders suspect Brian Kohbergers defense team demanding all DNA-related evidence on "Fox News Live." The genetic testing company 23andMe, once a pioneer in consumer DNA testing, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy amid financial struggles, a leadership shakeup and growing concerns about the security of its customers' genetic data. Let's take a look at the implications of this development and some steps to safeguard your sensitive information.Stay protected & informed! Get security alerts & expert tech tips sign up for Kurts The CyberGuy Report now. 23andMe saliva collection kit (23andMe) (Kurt "CyberGuy" Knutsson)The fall of 23andMe: A timeline of challenges23andMe's journey from a $6 billion valuation in 2021 to bankruptcy in 2025 has been marked by significant hurdles.Data breach in 2023: Acyberattack compromised the genetic and personal data of nearly 7 million users, leading to lawsuits and reputational damage.Leadership reshuffle: CEO Anne Wojcicki resigned as part of the bankruptcy announcement, positioning herself as a potential buyer of the company.Financial decline: The companys stock plummeted from over $300 per share to less than $1, reflecting its deteriorating financial health.Workforce reductions: In November 2024, 23andMe laid off 40% of its employees as part of restructuring efforts.Bankruptcy filing and sale process: On March 23, 2025, 23andMe initiated voluntary Chapter 11 proceedings in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Missouri to facilitate a sale process aimed at maximizing the value of its business. The company intends to continue its normal operations throughout this process and has emphasized that there will be no changes to how customer data is stored, managed or protected.Despite these challenges, the company has stated that its bankruptcy filing will not affect how it manages or protects customer data. However, concerns remain about the potential sale of its assets, including sensitive genetic information. 23andMe saliva collection kit (23andMe) (Kurt "CyberGuy" Knutsson)23andMe board seeks to maximize value through a court-supervised sale"After a thorough evaluation of strategic alternatives, we have determined that a court-supervised sale process is the best path forward to maximize the value of the business," said Mark Jensen, chair and member of the special committee of the board of directors of 23andMe."We expect the court-supervised process will advance our efforts to address the operational and financial challenges we face, including further cost reductions and the resolution of legal and leasehold liabilities. We believe in the value of our people and our assets and hope that this process allows our mission of helping people access, understand and benefit from the human genome to live on for the benefit of customers and patients."Jensen continued,"We want to thank our employees for their dedication to 23andMes mission. We are committed to supporting them as we move through the process. In addition, we are committed to continuing to safeguard customer data and being transparent about the management of user data going forward, and data privacy will be an important consideration in any potential transaction." 23andMe saliva collection kit (23andMe) (Kurt "CyberGuy" Knutsson)What happens to your genetic data during bankruptcy? When a company like 23andMe files for bankruptcy, its assets, including customer data, can become part of the sale process. While privacy laws in some states, such asCalifornia's Genetic Information Privacy Act, require explicit consent before transferring genetic data to a new owner, the risk of misuse or unauthorized access remains.23andMe has assured customers that any buyer will be required to comply with applicable privacy laws. However, genetic data is a valuable asset that could be exploited if not adequately safeguarded.Additionally, only a week and a half ago, 23andMe updated their terms and conditions, which I've reviewed. They've added an important legal disclosure that could prevent an individual from filing a lawsuit with expectations of a court trial. Instead, unless you opt out by notifying 23andme within 30 days of first use, you are automatically bound to the new terms that force parties into an arbitration path for any legal remedies that could arise now or in the future.I strongly urge you to protect your rights by emailing arbitrationoptout@23andme.com with a clear notification that you intend to opt out of arbitration. Make sure to use the email address associated with your 23andme account. That would be the first thing you should do in my next steps that you may wish to take to protect your rights and privacy now.Steps to protect your genetic dataIf youre a 23andMe user or considering using similar services, here are steps you can take to protect your sensitive information and safeguard your data from potential misuse or theft.1) Opt out of arbitration: If you wish to retain your right to sue the company in case of future issues, opt out of arbitration agreements by emailing your notification to opt out of arbitration arbitrationoptout@23andme.com within 30 days of first use.2) Review privacy preferences: Regularly check your privacy and data-sharing settings to ensure they align with your comfort level.3) Limit research participation: Disable participation in research or product development initiatives if youre concerned about how your data might be used.4) Download and secure your data: Before considering account deletion, download your genetic record and store it securely on an encrypted device or cloud service.5) Request data deletion: If you no longer wish for your data to be stored by 23andMe, request its deletion through your account settings. Ensure you also ask for the destruction of any physical samples.6) Use strong passwords and multifactor authentication:Creating unique, complex passwords for each of your accounts and devices is essential. Avoid reusing passwords across multiple accounts; this kind of password reuse was a factor in the recent23andMe data breach. Enable two-factor authentication wherever its offered to add an extra layer of security that helps prevent unauthorized access even if your password is compromised.Check out my best expert-reviewed password managers for 2025 here.7) Monitor for suspicious activity and use identity theft protection: Genetic data leaks can lead to identity theft or medical fraud. Consider signing up for an identity theft protection service that monitors personal information, such as your Social Security number, phone number and email, alerting you if this data is found on the dark web. Some identity theft services also include up to $1 million in identity theft insurance to cover losses and legal fees and a dedicated fraud resolution team with a U.S.-based case manager to help you recover any stolen assets or identity.See my expert recommendations here: Best identity theft protection services for 2025 here.Kurt's key takeawaysThe bankruptcy of 23andMe serves as a cautionary tale about the risks associated with sharing sensitive genetic information. While the company has pledged to maintain its privacy standards during this turbulent period, consumers must remain vigilant. By taking control of your data now, whether through enhanced privacy settings or deletion, you can better protect yourself against potential misuse in uncertain times.Do you think genetic testing companies are doing enough to protect your data in the face of financial instability and potential bankruptcy? • The 30+ best anti-Amazon Spring Sale deals 2025: Walmart, Best Buy, Costco, and more
    www.zdnet.com
When is Amazon's Spring Sale 2025?Amazon's Big Spring Sale returns Tuesday, March 25, and ends Monday, March 31.Are deals really better during Amazon sales?Deals on flagship Amazon products are typically the best during Amazon's own sales. These sales are also a great opportunity to scoop up decent savings across dozens of categories. Keep in mind that you'll be able to shop at plenty of other retailers during the same period as Amazon's sale as retailers look to compete. Will other retailers offer spring savings?Yes, other major retailers will likely offer their discounts via competing sales. Often, retailers like Walmart, Best Buy, Target, and more directly match (or sometimes outdo) Amazon's pricing during sale events. It's not unusual to see the same products on sale for the same price across many retailers. I expect many competing sale events to precede, overlap, or follow Amazon's spring sale. How did we choose these anti-Amazon Spring Sale deals?ZDNET only writes about deals we want to buy -- devices and products we desire, need or would recommend. Our experts looked for deals that were at least 20% off (or are hardly ever on sale), using established price comparison tools and trackers to determine whether the deal is on sale and how frequently it drops. We also reviewed customer reviews to find out what matters to real people who already own and use the deals we recommend. Our recommendations may also be based on our testing -- in addition to extensive research and comparison shopping. • Netflixs The Electric State Should Raise Concerns At Marvel
    www.forbes.com
The Electric StateNetflixWhile Netflix original movies do not have to be critical hits to be successes, there is starting to be no getting around the fact that The Electric State is shaping up to be a disaster for the service. The reportedly $320 million Russo Brothers production starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt is one of the most expensive movies ever made. Its viewership is now lower on Netflixs Top 10 list than Kraven the Hunter, one of the worst-performing superhero movies at the box office ever, a film so bad it killed the entire Sony spider-universe.The Electric State is also bad with a frankly stunning 15% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, something that even makes Zack Snyders Rebel Moon movies look good. There are insider reports that Marvels Kevin Feige is concerned about the film and will be taking a more active role in the Russos upcoming dual Avengers movies. If that isnt true, it should be, given what weve just seen here.We do not have an updated set of viewership numbers for The Electric State yet, but the film is down to #6 in Netflixs top 10 list, behind some extremely random entries. Den of Thieves 2 has now been planted at #1. A tornado documentary next, then Despicable Me 4, Kraven and M. Night Shyamalans Trap. This has been the case for a few days now, and it was under a week after release that it had dropped off being #1, which you just do not want to see with a movie this expensive, which Netflix hoped would be one of its biggest ever. The Electric StateNetflixWith a 25 million view start and this much of a drop-off, Im finding it hard to believe that The Electric State will be able to crawl its way into Netflixs top 10 most viewed movie list behind well, every single movie that cost less there, some quite cheap. Netflixs recently released Carry-On, for instance, cost $47 million, approximately 14 percent of The Electric State. Something went very wrong here, and this should result in three things:Netflix examining how much it spends on original content, even if it claims to have infinite money to make it.Netflix getting more involved in at least some level of quality control in these big projects so they dont produce embarrassing disasters.I think its more than fair for the Russos to be scrutinized at this point, and heading straight into two hugely important Avengers movies right after producing this film is unsettling, even given their past successful history with Marvel. Will any of that happen? Well see, but no, I dont think this is going to be a critics hated it but it did massive numbers situation in the end.Follow me , and .Pick up my sci-fi novels the and

A hot potato: It's another day, another company raising the prices of its already expensive RTX 5090 graphics cards. On this occasion, the culprit is Zotac, which has also removed any flagship cards priced at MSRP from its storefront. As highlighted by a Reddit user, the cheapest RTX 5090 Zotac card on the company's store, the Solid OC, is now $2,700, while the RTX 5090 Amp Extreme Infinity is $3,000. That's an increase of $500 on each card compared to their original prices.Zotac's store no longer lists any RTX 5090 cards at MSRP, either. The company did list a non-OC version for the Solid on the site at Nvidia's recommended $1,999 price, but it appears that the model was pulled after selling just a few units.Zotac 5090 Amp Extreme is now $3000 and the 5090 Solid OC is now $2700byu/waldesnachtbrahms innvidiaZotac isn't alone when it comes to hiking card prices and removing or increasing the price of MSRP models. It was reported in February that both MSI and Asus had done the same thing, increasing RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 prices by up to $400.Extra tariffs on Chinese goods are likely contributing to the price hikes, as most graphics cards are assembled and tested in China. But that's far from the only reason. There's also the restricted supply and higher manufacturing costs to consider. Moreover, some companies are simply charging more for these cards because they know the huge demand ensures people will pay a fortune for them.VideoCardz also notes that Zotac introduced a method for loyal community members to buy RTX 50-series cards in February. Designed to combat scalpers and bots, the program offers priority access to members of the Zotac Gaming Discord server. However, it seems the company has been offering hardly any cards through this service. In one case, only three RTX 5080 Amp Extreme Infinity cards were available. // Related StoriesThe graphics card market is going through the kind of turmoil not seen since the bad old days of 2020 and 2021, when the pandemic-induced chip crisis and a crypto boom led to similar high prices and lack of stock globally. It seems the only place to find an RTX 5000 at MSRP recently has been a food truck at Nvidia's GTC conference.

Facepalm: The FBI is once again warning about an SMS phishing campaign targeting drivers and car owners. The unknown cybercriminals are trying to steal users' data and money, though avoiding the scam seems easy enough: you just have to do nothing and completely ignore the incoming text message. In April 2024, the FBI warned US citizens about an ongoing smishing (or SMS phishing) campaign spreading unsolicited requests to pay for nonexistent road tolls. Now, the bureau's Seattle division is repeating the alert through its official X/Twitter account. If you have received a text message suggesting you may have unpaid tolls on your vehicle, FBI Seattle said, you are likely facing a scammer trying to get your personal information.According to the original alert released last year, this peculiar smishing scam affected thousands of people since early March 2024. The texts were arranged to look as if they were coming from a legitimate state toll collector, with at least three different states involved. The scam was seemingly moving from state-to-state, the FBI warned. The text, almost identical in language in every single message, claimed that the recipient had to pay a small amount of money for a road toll. To avoid paying a $50 fee, the victim was invited to visit a seemingly secure website to settle the issue online. The "outstanding toll amount" included in the SMS was similar among the many complaints received by the FBI, while the URL provided and the phone number tended to change from state to state. The federal bureau is asking users affected by the smishing campaign to file a complaint through its Internet Crime Complaint Center website. People should always look for legitimate toll services and their official websites before clicking a link in an SMS, the FBI warned, while all smishing texts should, of course, be deleted right away. // Related StoriesAlerts about unpaid balance can be an annoying and concerning, especially since scammers are smart enough to make their message sound urgent and official. People may be encouraged to take an offer and avoid paying for a late fee, especially if they drive their car frequently and visit different US states. The FBI's smishing alert dates back over a year, but it is now being relaunched with no specific information about the current threat levels. Official data says that there are around 242 million driver's licenses in the US right now, so the amount of attempted SMS scams is likely high enough to warrant a new FBI alert on the matter. As the FTC said earlier this year, if someone is asking for money via SMS, it's probably a scam.

  • The future of smartphone cameras might lie in old-school tech
    www.digitaltrends.com
With each generation, phone cameras tend to get a little bit better, a little bit clearer, and, unfortunately, a little bit bigger but Huaweis latest patent could offer a solution. The manufacturer filed a patent for a new type of periscope camera lens system that does away with the traditional method of using mirrors and instead opts for an extended lens.If you arent familiar, this style of camera lens system lets the photographer move the lens forward and back to adjust zoom distance. When not in use, the lens sits much closer to the phone than current lenses. The mirror system used to zoom in and out requires a certain amount of space, and an extendable lens decreases that while also allowing for more granular control.Recommended VideosTheres another perk to swapping to this, too. Huaweis patent specifically lists mechanical parts rather than electronics, and that makes the system more repairable overall. If something breaks, individual pieces can be replaced within reason, of course rather than replacing the entire camera unit. That will help bring prices down, too, in theory.Any win for repairability is a win for consumers.https://x.com/xleaks7/status/1904169555045257446Please enable Javascript to view this contentHowever, all of this relies on Huawei implementing the technology. Filing a patent doesnt necessarily mean the system will be used. The cost of producing and installing it might prove too high or too troublesome to be worthwhile. Only time will tell whether Huawei chooses to go through with it, and even if the company does use the technology, theres no guarantee others will follow. That said, Huawei has always been an innovative company. The world owes the first tri-fold phone to the company the Huawei Mate XT so its possible Huawei will continue the tradition of beating the rest of the competition to new tech.I prefer to be optimistic. The next step in phone camera evolution could lie in returning to older systems, and future generations of smartphones could have a more powerful camera that doesnt need a profile-shattering camera bump to work properly. There are other considerations, like how to properly protect mechanical components against drops and how cases will accommodate the adjustable size, but those are bridges to be crossed at a later date.Editors Recommendations
