• ChatGPT Just Got a Huge Image-Generation Upgrade
    lifehacker.com
OpenAI has significantly leveled up the image generating capabilities of ChatGPT, adding the update as part of the GPT-4o model introduced last May. The new and improved AI generator is rolling out now for all ChatGPT users, across paid plans and the free tier (though free users are more restricted in how much they can use it). It's been possible to generate images through the ChatGPT interface for a while now, though behind the scenes the work was farmed out to the DALL-E 3 image model. Now, everything will be handled by GPT-4o, for a more consistent and native experience. There are lots of improvements here, which cover some of the areas that AI image creator tools have typically struggled with: rendering text, keeping characters consistent across pictures, and drawing diagrams. OpenAI says you can now expect more "precise, accurate, [and] photorealistic" results from your prompts.More realistic and accurate images Generated images aren't perfect every time, but they're getting very close. Credit: Lifehacker via ChatGPT Images made with AI often come with an artificial sheen that tells you they've been dreamt up by algorithms, and that should be less obvious with GPT-4o images. One of the demo pictures shown off by OpenAI has a woman writing on a whiteboard, with a view reflected in itall pretty life-like, though note the small caption at the bottom that tells you this was the best of eight attempts ChatGPT had at the prompt. The AI art users create should also stick more closely to the prompts given, OpenAI says. So, if you want specific objects in specific places, or you need people in certain positions, then these instructions will apparently be carried out more faithfully. One of the more impressive example images shows a four-panel comic strip rendered by ChatGPT, without any obvious errors or inconsistencies.I tried to get ChatGPT to turn an Austen novel into a comic strip, and produce a photorealistic image of a stately home with a garden, and the results were impressiveif not quite perfect. They're certainly significantly better than the images ChatGPT was previously producing, although the rendering takes longer to complete (typically minutes rather than seconds).Text and diagrams are vastly improved Text is no longer a major problemso fake book covers can be made with ease. Credit: Lifehacker via ChatGPT Trying to get AI to render text and diagrams accurately has long been a challenge: The way these tools are built means they're much better at inventing and remixing the images they've been trained on, rather than reproducing an exact copy of the alphabet or a series of rectangles and arrows. The new GPT-4o model can render text and diagrams to a high level of detail and accuracy, so you shouldn't see as many strange mistakes and inconsistencies. OpenAI's showreel included a menu, an invitation, a boarding pass, and a diagram explaining Newton's prism experiment, all generated from a single text prompt. When I asked ChatGPT to produce an infographic explaining DNA in simple terms, and a book cover with a specified title and author, it followed the brief pretty exactlythe graphic was basic but accurate (as per the prompt), and the book cover looked like something you might see in a store. Just as importantly, there were no weird artifacts or inconsistencies in the images.Consistency and editing Professor, is that you? Character and image consistency still need some work. Credit: Lifehacker via ChatGPT I've written before about the limitations of ChatGPT image editing, and this is another area that's been upgraded. It's now easier to keep characters and scenes consistent between images, to only tweak parts of a picture and leave the rest untouched, and to build up different layers of an image. You can even create transparent backgrounds, if needed, or specify colors using hex codes.Other improvements come in the way ChatGPT can accept and remix your own images, and incorporate other information (from the web and its training data): So one of the demo OpenAI pictures was built from the prompt "make a visual infographic describing why SF is so foggy" and ChatGPT did just that (well, best of three). In my own tests, I found ChatGPT much better at editing images, and pretty competent at remixing pictures in different styles. It still struggles to some extent keeping consistency between imagesespecially with complex objects and characters. It's definitely better than it was at this, but there's still a tendency to overdo the edits, making the AI less useful for tweaking images or making a series of several images that need to match.Copyright and safety issues Diagrams are now much less nonsensical and more accurate. Credit: OpenAI As with any generative AI announcement, issues around copyright, misuse, and energy demands are once again brought to mind. OpenAI is on record as saying it's impossible to build these tools without training on copyrighted images, though it has recently started signing content deals with providers such as Shutterstock. Brad Lightcap, OpenAIs chief operating officer, told the Wall Street Journal that the GPT-4o image generator will reject requests to mimic the work of any living artist. When it comes to safety, OpenAI says generated images all come with C2PA metadata to identify them as AI-generatedthough this metadata can be easily removed with something as simple as a screenshot. The AI generator is also built to rebuff any attempts to create "child sexual abuse materials and sexual deepfakes" OpenAI says, as well as other prompts that violate its content policies. This is clearly a major step forward for AI images: The upgraded technology is genuinely jaw-dropping at times, and a lot of the tell-tale signs of AI and the errors made by the tech are vanishing. It does raise some big questions about the future we're all barreling towards though, one where fakes are so easily made, where creative work is done by robots rather than peopleand where we collectively lose our ability to sketch a picture, craft a sentence, or write a line of code. And then how will generative AI find more training data?

  • 'Task Till Dawn' Is a Simple Automation Tool for Windows and Mac
    lifehacker.com
Scheduling your computer to do something every day, every time you log in, or whenever the screen wakes up isn't impossible on most computers, it's just not convenient. Task Scheduler on Windows and Automator for macOS work if you're willing to dig in, but there's a learning curve.Task Till Dawn (which I found via App Addict) is a free Windows and macOS application made by developer Oliver Matuschin that you can use to set up custom automations for everything from starting a backup to changing your desktop wallpaper. To get started, download the application and launch it. You can start creating automations right away. There are four main sections to the automation builder. Metadata allows you to provide a name and description for your automation; Actions defines what the automation does. Credit: Justin Pot Setting up an automation mostly lives in the Actions tab. The left two panels show you the various things your automation can do, and the right panel shows you the steps you've currently set up.The next two tabs, Schedule and Events, allow you to pick when the automation will run. Schedule is fairly self-explanatory: You can choose to launch your automation based on time. This can mean a frequencyfor example, every two hoursor an exact timefor example, 10 a.m. every day. Credit: Justin Pot But you can also trigger automations based on Events, which to me is more interesting. This lets you do things like launch an automation when specific things happen, like your computer waking up or a new hard drive being connected. Credit: Justin Pot The fun here is experimenting and seeing what you can build. I, for example, wanted a Time Machine backup to run on my Mac every time I plugged in my backup drive (named "88MPH"). I set up an automation using the event "When volumes are inserted or drives are connected." I then set up the automation to retrieve the names of connected drives and only proceed if one matches the name of my drive. If a drive does match, the Time Machine backup begins. There's plenty more you can do here. The installation folder comes with a few pre-built workflows for doing things like automatically grabbing photos from a camera and announcing the time out loud every hour. Exploring these is a great way to get a feel for what's possible. The real fun, though, is trying to build something yourself.

  • Trump to impose 25 percent tariffs on all cars not made in the US
    www.engadget.com
President Donald Trump has signed a proclamation imposing 25 percent tariffs on "all cars that are not made in the United States" on top of taxes that are already in place. The tariffs will apply to all imported sedans, SUVs, crossovers, minivans, cargo vans and light trucks. They will also apply to key automotive components not made in the US, including engines, transmissions, powertrain parts and electrical components, and they could expand to cover additional parts if necessary. The new tariffs will take effect on April 2, and the US government expects to start collecting on April 3.According to CNBC, the president assured automakers that there will be "absolutely no tariff" for cars made in the US. The administration is also giving automotive companies importing goods under the US-Mexico-Canada agreement time to get their US-made parts certified so that the additional taxes will only apply to the value of their non-US-made components. Trump first announced that his administration was going to impose 25 percent tariffs on automobile imports back in February. He also said at the time that the government intends to collect an additional 25 percent in taxes, or higher, on semiconductor imports.Trump White House aide Will Scharf said that the new automobile tariffs will earn the US "over $100 billion of new annual revenue." European Commission's president, Ursula von der Leyen, criticized the US government's decision. "As I have said before, tariffs are taxes bad for businesses, worse for consumers equally in the US and the European Union," she said in a statement. In the White House's announcement, however, the administration insisted that tariffs are good for the country's economy and will not lead to inflation or an increase in prices. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/transportation/trump-to-impose-25-percent-tariffs-on-all-cars-not-made-in-the-us-120026997.html?src=rss

  • Noble Audio FoKus Apollo review: The high price of pristine audio
    www.engadget.com
I dont review a lot of $650 headphones. Thats because most audio companies sell their top-of-the-line gear around $300-$400. Noble Audio isnt like most companies. The FoKus Rex5 earbuds, for example, cram in five separate drivers where much of the competition uses two at the most. Noble was also among the first to employ xMEMS drivers in wireless earbuds in a bid to improve bass performance. Enter the FoKus Apollo, a $649 pair of active noise canceling (ANC) headphones with a detachable boom mic and up to 80 hours of battery life. The real star of the show is the driver setup, which Noble says is the first time this configuration appears in wireless headphones. The company is once again on a quest for the absolute best sound quality, but it may sacrifice a little too much along the way. Sound quality is the main attraction Noble Audios proposition is simple: the worlds first headphones that offer a hybrid speaker pairing of a 40mm dynamic driver with a 14.5mm planar magnetic driver. A dynamic driver is nothing new for a set of cans, but adding the latter makes the FoKus Apollos audio setup unique. For the uninitiated, planar magnetic drivers have a thin, flat diaphragm that typically offers a wider, more immersive soundstage and enhanced detail compared to dynamic drivers. Planar magnetic drivers are typically reserved for audiophile-grade headphones since theyre larger and more fragile. With the FoKus Apollo, Noble capitalized on the best of both worlds for the stock tuning. You get the bass power of a dynamic driver with the clarity of a planar magnetic driver. Since planar magnetic units cant move enough air for the robust bass that most of us crave, and as dynamic drivers are limited with mid- and high-range details, the company argues it has created the optimal solution. From the first second of the first song, I could tell the FoKus Apollo was built differently. The addition of planar magnetic drivers offers the most bass-heavy genres an almost absurd amount of detail. Albums like Spiritboxs Tsunami Sea that lack clarity on other headphones greatly benefit from the treble boost, serving up more nuance in the guitar riffs and texture in the kick drum blasts. The FoKus Apollo also excels with mellow styles, allowing you to hear every bit of sound coming from the acoustic guitars, banjo, bass and more on Julien Baker & TORRES Sugar in the Tank. Going from most over-ear headphones to the FoKus Apollo is like going from standard music streaming to vinyl. And I dont think thats hyperbole. FoKus Apollo in-use: ANC, battery life and more Billy Steele for Engadget A pair of $649 ANC headphones better damn well provide some decent noise cancellation, even if youre primarily buying them for the audio performance. Noble opted for a hybrid ANC setup with three microphones on each side and a Qualcomm QCC3084 chip. That processor provides the necessary digital signal processing (DSP) and algorithms to reduce background distractions. Like a lot of ANC headphones, the FoKus Apollo struggles with voices. That means any hopes of silencing a chatty colleague wont pan out. However, the headphones do a solid job with constant noise sources fans, appliances, noise machines, etc. so they do offer some relief. The noise-blocking prowess isnt as good as the likes of Bose, but I found ample room to focus during my test sessions. While the ANC here isnt among the best, its perfectly serviceable in most environments. Noble promises a whopping 60 hours of battery life with ANC enabled, with another 20 hours of use if you turn it off. I found that those figures hold true during my time with the FoKus Apollo. After 30 hours of music, podcasts and work calls with noise cancellation active, the headphones still had 57 percent battery remaining tracking slightly better than the companys stated numbers. The Fokus Apollo comes with all the accessories youd ever need right in the box. Noble includes a detachable boom mic, 3.5mm to 4.4mm adapter, two-prong airline adapter, USB-C cable and 3.5mm aux cable. The headphones can be used with either of those two cords, and the company recommends you do so when employing the microphone for optimal voice quality. If youre planning to use the Fokus Apollo for calls, you can expect mixed results. In quiet spaces with little echo, youll sound good enough for a professional presentation. When you move to a room with some natural reverb, the mics on these headphones pick that up a little too well. Whats more, theyre not great at blocking background sounds, as fans, white noise machines and raucous appliances were all clearly heard on the other end during my tests. Design that matches the sound The FoKus Apollo is really expensive, so Noble couldnt just give us a set of headphones built mostly out of plastic and call it a day. Thankfully, the company chose a mix of anodized aluminum, premium protein leather and a soft Alcantara headband. The leather-wrapped memory foam ear pads are replaceable, which will extend the life of the headphones under heavy use. Theres also a nice textured cloth pattern on the outside of the ear cups and headband that provide both tactile and visual contrast. Noble Audio provides physical controls on the FoKus Apollo, so youll never have to struggle with tap or touch gestures to make changes. On the right side, theres a dedicated button for ANC modes (on, off and transparency) with a three-control array just below it. Here, the top and bottom buttons handle the volume and track adjustments while the center one is used for power, Bluetooth pairing, play/pause and to summon Google Assistant, Siri or some other virtual helper. On the left ear cup, a single slider allows you to mute all the microphones, even the boom when its attached, without reaching for your phone or keyboard. The lack of advanced features Billy Steele for Engadget The FoKus Apollo is really only focused on the basics, so it doesnt offer any of todays advanced features. Heck, there arent even tools that have been on other sets for years like wear detection. Although youll get support for Sonys LDAC codec along with AAC, aptX, aptX HD and SBC, theres no mention of Dolby Atmos or any form of spatial audio. You dont find any discussion of adaptive audio or adaptive ANC that makes automatic adjustments to both overall sound and noise cancellation either. Look, Im well aware the premise here is pristine sound quality above all else. But at $649, which is $100 more than the AirPods Max by the way, I expect some degree of convenience that allows me to keep these headphones on for most of the day. Automatic pausing or wear detection should be standard at this price and it would be nice to have some additional sound/ANC options. Im not picky about whether those are the automatic, adaptive type, or whether theyre settings I have to toggle on in the app. Just, please, give me something more than EQ adjustments when your sound out of the box is already incredible. The competition Once you hit $500 and above, youve surpassed what most companies charge for their flagship-level wireless headphones. Youre also in a price range where Ive only reviewed a handful of models. If money is no object, the $699 Px8 from Bowers & Wilkins delivers excellent sound quality in a design that might be preferable to some folks (theres at least multiple color options). Its ANC performance isnt earth shattering either, and one of my biggest gripes with the companys products is the lack of advanced features like the FoKus Apollo. Theres also the AirPods Max and Dyson On-Trac, but neither of those are easy to recommend. Apples over-ear headphones have barely been updated since they arrived in 2020, except for an upgrade to USB-C and the upcoming addition of lossless audio. Dysons headphones have long battery life and a unique design, but they didnt impress me sound-wise, have average ANC performance and lack the modern features I expect for $500. I also need to mention Master & Dynamics MW75 in the over-$500 discussion. If youre after high-end looks, no other company consistently nails its trademark aesthetic like M&D. True to its lineage, the company pairs leather and metal on these headphones, along with tempered glass panels on the outside of the earcups. Ive always enjoyed the balance of M&Ds stock tuning and the ANC performance is solid. You wont get any advanced features here either, but like the Px8, there are multiple color options if youre after something other than Nobles black and silver paint scheme. Wrap-up I have no doubts there are a lot of people that will thoroughly enjoy the FoKus Apollo. If you crave the absolute best sound quality on the market, these headphones are the best Ive tested in that regard. For me, to pay $649 I expect more in terms of features. The first item would be better ANC performance, but I dont feel like spatial audio support and wear detection are too much to ask. Even without any of that, you do get a novel driver setup that produces some ridiculously detailed sound across diverse genres. • Kohls store closures 2025: Saturday is your last chance to shop at these 27 locations before they shut their doors
    www.fastcompany.com
Back in January, Kohls announced that it would be closing 27 of its stores across America in order to help the company control costs and increase operational efficiency. At the time, Kohls described the closing locations as underperforming and said the closures will occur by April 2025. And now it looks like Kohls remains on track for that by April deadline. As first noticed by USA Today, the 27 stores that Kohls had previously announced would be closing now list their last day of operation as this Saturday, March 29, on Kohls store locator tool. For example, the store locator listing for the Kohls located at 1116 1st Street in Napa, California, now lists, in bright red letters, This store will be closing soon. Our last day of business at this location will be Saturday, March 29th. Other closing locations also show the same message. The listing for the Napa store goes on to reveal that its store hours for the last day of its operation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. After that, the store will shut its doors to customers for good.Kohls store closures 2025 full listThe 27 Kohls stores that are closing are spread across 15 states, with California being hit the hardest with 10 stores closing there. After the stores are closed on Saturday, Kohls will still operate over 1,120 locations across the country.Announcing the closures in January, Kohls CEO Tom Kingsbury said, We always take these decisions very seriously. • For Gen Z, viral videos are the new primetime
    www.fastcompany.com
Gen Z isnt just watching creatorstheyre choosing them over traditional TV and movies.Thats the big takeaway from Deloittes 19th annual Digital Media Trends survey. The report finds that 56% of Gen Z and 43% of millennials find social media content more relevant than traditional entertainment options, and about half feel a stronger personal connection to social media creators than to actors or TV personalities. The entertainment industry is in a battle for attention, competing for an average of six hours of daily screen time per person. But that number isnt increasing. In this landscape, tech platforms have the upper hand over traditional studios and streamers, with online creators catering to every niche imaginable. And younger consumers dont just watch creatorsthey trust them. A majority of Gen Z and millennials say creator content is their favorite type of video, and about half feel a stronger bond with influencers than with TV personalities or actors. These parasocial relationships keep fans invested, scrolling, and coming back for more. For younger audiences, viral videos arent just entertainmenttheyre the new primetime, and creators are todays stars. That doesnt mean the grass never looks greener. A number of creators are making the leap to network TV and streaming platforms, where they can secure lucrative and stable contracts, gain exposure, and grow their audiences. Just as creators are building on their fame in traditional media, celebrities are also establishing themselves as brands and amassing followings on social media. Its not just attention that media and entertainment companies are fighting forits also a limited pool of consumer spending. Subscription fatigue is real, and there are no signs of people paying more for streaming services. Instead, many are frustrated by rising prices and the hassle of juggling multiple subscriptions to access the content they want. Nearly half of those surveyed by Deloitte feel theyre overpaying for streaming services, and 41% say the content isnt worth the cost.To compete for views in todays media landscape, traditional studios and streamers need to get with the program. As recently as two decades ago, pay TV was considered just as essential in the household as toilet paper. Fast forward to today, and for younger generations, TV is background noise while they scroll on their phones.
