• Googles Gmail UpgradeNew Warning For 3 Billion Users

New Gmail warningNurPhoto via Getty ImagesJust days after Google confirmed it is bringing its next AI upgrade to Gmail, with major privacy implications, theres more good and bad news for the 3 billion users relying on Google to deliver secure, spam-free email to their phones and computers. It turns out that a dangerous email attack has operated under the radar for years until now.First to the good news. Googles tightening restrictions on the mass delivery of spam emails to your inbox is working and its having a devastating impact on the industry spawned to plague you with marketing messages. Over the last year, industry website MarTech says the industry has seen engagement rates (open and click rates, especially) drop considerably. Their emails only show up in the inboxes of people already engaging with the brand. For most subscribers, the emails are getting flagged as spam. This is having the desired effect, albeit for many of these brands, this is the first time they have encountered this issue [and] for brands with a recent history of combatting spam labels, normal mitigation practices have either been unsuccessful or only effective in the short term. Bad for brands and marketeers, good for email users.Be warned, though, the industry is shaping new advice to bypass the new measures. Email deliverability is more of an art than a science, says Martech. Ensure your team maintains an open dialogue about strategies to stay out of the spam folder, and test initiatives that have proven effective for similar brands.Apples own spam crackdown has had the same effect, but the Gmail impact is much greater. According to Statista, Gmail and related e-mail addresses given out by Google positively dominate the U.S. market, this despite the latest privacy warnings, with its new AI upgrade leaving many users feeling anxious and appalled at the thought that a generative AI would be reading their personal emails. For its part, when asked about the new AI upgrade Google told me our priority is respecting our users privacy while giving them choice and control over their data. To that end, this particular tool is one of the 'smart features that users can control in their personalization settings. You can read more about those privacy settings.Gmail versus the restStatistaBut Gmail (and other) security restrictions are not bulletproof far from it. Infloblox warns it recently discovered a DNS technique used to tailor content to victims. This works by way of a phishing kit that creatively employs DNS mail exchange (MX) records to dynamically serve fake, tailored, login pages, spoofing over 100 brands. The attacks evade detection by exploiting the DNS over HTTPS (DoH) upgrade.According to the research team, most of the hyperlinks in the spam emails use domains related to compromised WordPress websites, URL shorteners, or free web hosting. This includes abusing legitimate adtech infrastructure to generate redirect links to the phishing webpages. They also exploit open redirect vulnerabilities on DoubleClick, an advertising network owned by Google. As Bleeping Computer explains, the operation dubbed Morphing Meerkat can impersonate more than 114 email and service providers, including Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, DHL, Maersk, and RakBank, delivering messages with subject lines crafted to prompt urgent action like Action Required: Account Deactivation. One devious twist in these attacks is that after serving malicious login pages for a users email service to steal credentials, an attack can then redirect to the real email login page to avoid suspicion and leave a user thinking they mistyped their credentials.Infoblox says the threat actor behind the campaigns often exploits open redirects on adtech infrastructure, compromises domains for phishing distribution, and distributes stolen credentials through several mechanisms, including Telegram. Alarmingly this has operated under everyones radar. Although there have been reports of individual instances related to this activity, we have not seen reporting on this PhaaS and MX record technique, despite it being in operation for years. All the more reason not to click, download or open unless youre absolutely sure. And yet another clear warning as to why email with its archaic architecture needs a rethink rather than a series of security upgrades that leave core weaknesses untouched.

  • It's about to get easier and cheaper for wealthy people to move to New Zealand. Americans are the most intrigued.

Forty percent of inquiries about New Zealand's revamped golden visa program have come from Americans, the government said. nazar_ab/Getty Images 2025-03-30T08:43:02Z SaveSaved Read in app This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Become an Insider and start reading now.Have an account? Starting April 1, New Zealand is easing its golden visa rules to lure wealthy people to move there. Most visa inquiries so far have come from Americans, the New Zealand government told BI.Americans jarred by political tumult may be drawn to New Zealand's lifestyle, safety, and stability.New Zealand's breathtaking landscapes and temperate climate lured 370,000 American visitors in 2024, according to government arrival data.Other Americans may want to make more permanent trips.About 40% of inquiries about New Zealand's "golden visa" program have come from the US, according to Benny Goodman, the investment general manager for New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, or NZTE.Some Americans are exploring moves out of the country because of dissatisfaction with the political climate. Google searches for "moving to New Zealand" spiked around Election Day and Inauguration Day, as did related searches for "moving to Canada" and "how to move out of the US."Starting April 1, it'll get a little easier for wealthy foreigners to pay for a pathway to New Zealand residency. The country is changing the requirements for its golden visa program, formally called the "active investor plus" visa. The lightening of golden visa requirements comes as New Zealand is trying to boost an economy grappling with recession, its worst downturn since 1991 except for the pandemic. The government is itching for high-net-worth immigrants, according to Dominic Jones, the managing director of Greener Pastures New Zealand, which helps people get residency through investment.Jones said there are three main reasons wealthy Americans might be drawn to New Zealand: its laid-back lifestyle, its political stability, and its lack of crime."If you go back 10 or 20 years, the drivers around safety in particular may not have been that important, but now it's increasingly on people's minds," he said.Americans are intrigued by the new visa optionsThe new golden visa requirements are as follows: Prospective residents can invest $5 million New Zealand dollars (or about $2.8 million) in "higher-risk" investments, like managed funds, and hold them for at least three years to receive permanent residency.Investors can choose a second option and invest $10 million New Zealand dollars (or about $5.7 million)Previously, there were three, not two, different investment groups, more time required in the country to qualify for residency, and an English-speaking requirement that has been removed. The previous minimum investment was more expensive: $15 million New Zealand dollars.Bloomberg reported in February that only 43 golden visa applicants from all countries were approved between 2022 and 2025, when the old rules were in place. They brought in a total of $545 million New Zealand dollars.According to the New Zealand Herald, since the changes were announced in February, NZTE saw a 400% rise in visits to its visa web pages.Since Greener Pastures' website launched in December, inquiries about relocating from America to New Zealand have tripled, beating out increases in interest from other countries, said Mischa Mannix-Opie, the director of client experience at Greener Pastures."Americans have been our key focus that's been our priority," she told BI. "That's where we've seen the biggest lift which has been quite pleasing for us to see."There are also less-expensive options to spend a few months in New Zealand, including a digital nomad visa that allows travelers to work from New Zealand for up to 92 days. If you qualify, it costs about $193.Some Americans are already enjoying the New Zealand lifestyle.Take Garvey Daniels, who moved his family from California to New Zealand in 2022, after falling in love with the scenery while living there in the '90s.Daniels told BI in 2023 that he worries less about his kids' safety in New Zealand."My kids just get to go and have an education," he said. "They can walk to the dairy with their friends, and if they decide they want to go eat ice cream on the beach and they're not home right away, I don't go into a mad panic."Recommended video

  • Americans haven't been this freaked out about their jobs since the Great Recession
    www.businessinsider.com
This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Become an Insider and start reading now.Have an account? You know that sensation when something feels off, but you can't quite put your finger on it? That sensation of "I don't feel so good about this," even though the "this" is a little fuzzy. That's the state of work for many people right now. So if you're a little uneasy about the job market, you're not alone. The economy's felt like the other shoe is about to drop for quite some time now. There was the euphoria of the Great Resignation, the post-pandemic era where workers had a lot of temporary power and did some job-hopping. That gave way to the confusing negativity of the vibecession, when Americans said the economy was terrible even though, on paper, it was good and, despite their negativity, consumers kept spending like it was good, too. Then we got to the Big Stay, where workers decided to stick to what they were doing, whether they were happy about it or not. Sentiment picked up a bit after the 2024 election when people thought a Trump 2.0 economy would look as rosy as they remembered Trump 1.0. But now, the bad vibes are back. Workers are not feeling great about the labor market or their own jobs. The Big Stay has transformed into the Big Cling to Your Desk, Suck Up to Your Boss, Be Seen in the Office.Consumer sentiment has been on the downswing recently, in part because people are feeling queasy about work. The Conference Board's consumer confidence index fell in March, driven largely by declines in people's outlooks on income, business, and the labor market. The concerns about the future pushed the Conference Board's expectations index to its lowest point in 12 years, below the level that tends to signal a recession. While people feel OK about the current labor market, they're worried about their future employment prospects and their future incomes."That's a sign that people are getting worried about their own situation," said Stephanie Guichard, a senior economist at The Conference Board, in an interview. She added that people are beginning to say they're more worried about their family financial situations, too. "We are at the point where they may start changing their behavior."Surveys from the University of Michigan reflect a similar doom-and-gloom mood toward the labor market. Consumers' expectations for unemployment over the next year are at their worst level since the Great Recession two-thirds of them think unemployment will go up. According to the University of Michigan's most recent reading, consumer sentiment has declined across the economy, cutting across age, income, and politics, as people are feeling increasingly anxious about a wide variety of measures, including their own personal finances and the labor market. Even high-income consumers are worried about their situations. As with the Conference Board's findings, the University of Michigan's survey shows people aren't just worried about the broader labor market, they're worried about themselves."If labor markets truly weaken or people believe that labor markets are going to weaken, and now they're expecting their incomes to be less stable than they were before, they're not going to be willing to go out on a limb and spend at the same high level, take financial risks, make more investments, start new businesses," said Joanne Hsu, the director of consumer surveys at the University of Michigan. "People are not going to be comfortable doing that if they're perceiving weaknesses throughout the economy."Everybody hates uncertainty, whether you're talking about executives down to front-line workers. On paper, the labor market remains quite solid. The unemployment rate is healthy relative to history, though it's a bit elevated from recent historic lows, and layoffs remain steady. The quit rate is a little below where it was pre-pandemic, which reflects the "stay where you are" attitude, but overall, signs from "hard" data are flashing yellow.Daniel Zhao, the lead economist at Glassdoor, told me that mentions of layoffs in the platform's employee reviews are up by 5% compared to last year and are steadily climbing. "Even if workers are still employed, that doesn't necessarily mean they are happy in their jobs," he said. Some of the commentary is from people talking about the ongoing effects of previous layoffs, expressing feelings of burnout because their workplaces are understaffed. Or, they're worried that they'll get swept up in the next round of cuts. "Employees might not see any reason why there wouldn't be another round of layoffs if they feel like the business and the economy are in a similar position," he said. Related stories People see the headlines about a white-collar recession, and they're unnerved, whether they're knowledge workers or not. They see the news that businesses may be rethinking hiring plans and wonder if they'd be able to find a new gig if necessary. The word of the day is "uncertainty" the US Economic Policy Uncertain Index is higher than it was during the pandemic. There's a constant sense of whiplash across many parts of the economy and politics. What's happening with tariffs seems to change daily. Announcements of mass government firings and confusing reinstatements are happening constantly. Many businesses and workers expected Donald Trump's second term to look like his first one, with tax cuts and relatively unserious tariff threats and a general business-friendly stance. Instead, they're faced with a new version of Trump whose tariff gyrations are making business planning impossible and who doesn't seem to care if the stock market falls because of his actions."Everybody hates uncertainty, whether you're talking about executives down to front-line workers," Zhao said."A lot of people only are like, 'Wow, the mix of policies is worse than I thought, but I'm not exactly sure what policies are being implemented and what I should prepare for," said Guy Berger, the director of economic research at the Burning Glass Institute, a labor-analytics firm. There's a level of paralysis amid the chaos. With so much instability, many workers and businesses feel like they have no choice but to stay put. That means employees are sticking with their jobs, and businesses are easing off the gas on hiring plans until there's a better sense of what's going on.Everybody's just kind of frozen, waiting and seeing."People are hesitant to really even expand sizably or leave their job and find other ones that are a better fit," Allison Shrivastava, an economist at Indeed, said. "Everybody's just kind of frozen, waiting and seeing."Some of the worker sentiments and anxieties are not that different from, say, 2023 or 2024. There's long been a subtle recognition that nothing lasts forever, including an extra-worker-friendly jobs market. The vibes have been off for a few years now. But the economists I spoke with said that something distinct is happening that may make things different. Instead of gesturing broadly at the state of things, workers are specifically negative about their personal outlooks. The level of uncertainty in the economy is palpable. That means they may be likelier to decide to really batten down the hatches, try really hard to hold onto their jobs, and, in turn, start reigning in their spending. (Though that last one is TBD throughout this inflationary and vibecessionary period, consumer spending has been remarkably resilient.)"Employees do feel pretty uncertain about the future," Zhao said.Berger emphasized that just because workers feel worse doesn't mean they're right that things actually are worse. As mentioned, on paper, the labor market and economy look pretty good. Stocks are down, yes, but as the saying goes, the stock market is not the economy."So far, everything we've seen in terms of data is pretty small scale," he said. "There's nothing here that so far suggests that we've fallen into this doom loop where we're going to tip into a downturn where things are going to get worse. If I had to guess, it's going to be an incremental worsening."For workers who are on edge, the idea of incremental worsening isn't especially heartening. That means many people may be making the calculation that it's better to stay where they are, avoid asking for too much, and hope to stay in the boss' good graces. Why the Xbox 360 is still Microsofts most successful console Readers FeatureGameCentralPublished March 30, 2025 9:00am Xbox 360 will be 20 in November (Microsoft)A reader reminisces over the Xbox 360 console and it games, as Microsofts groundbreaking format prepares to celebrate its 20th anniversary. The Xbox 360 is eight months away from celebrating the 20th anniversary of its launch. The Xbox 360 brought us hundreds of classic games, along with the very popular Xbox Live Arcade and popular indie titles (such as CastleMiner Z, a personal favourite of mine) along with the introduction of party chat and playable demos, including multiplayer. The console today remains Microsofts best-selling console. It played host to very popular games series such as Crackdown, Left 4 Dead, Saints Row, Dead Rising, Gears Of War, Halo, Call Of Duty, and Command & Conquer. As well as some of my personal favourite shoot em-ups: The Outfit, Frontlines: Fuel Of War, Syndicate, and Condemned, plus Xbox Arcade games such as Uno, Texas Holdem, 1 Vs 100, South Park: Lets Go Tower Defence. The Xbox 360 fought off a rocky launch, with its Red Ring Of Death, and despite this set back it still managed to cement itself as one of the best consoles to be produced by Microsoft.Microsoft could celebrate the 20th anniversary with its fans by offering everyone on the Xbox Network three of the best Xbox 360 games, all backwards compatible on the Xbox Series X. Newer generations of players would also enjoy these classics and would get to experience some of the best games Microsoft has to offer from the past. While the Xbox 360 store is closed the servers are still active and multiplayer could still be enjoyed. One particular memory fans of this console may also have is the free demo discs that came with the Official Xbox Magazine, ensuring those without Xbox Live access got to play new demos without the need to download or have an internet connection. This was a great way to ensure no one missed out and was one of the best magazines available for the Xbox 360 platform. One thing I remember with the demo discs was the menu music, which was catchy and great to listen to.Im sure many other people have great memories of this platform, such as making new friends and some funny moments playing the online games. The Xbox Live Vision camera was also a great accessory, that did add more fun to games and provided a social aspect to the Xbox 360 by allowing video features. There are fans who still have a good collection of Xbox 360 games today, which they can play on the Xbox Series X with some optimisation. Crackdown, for example, looks great on the Xbox Series X with better visuals.I first purchased an Xbox 360 way back in January of 2006, which was not a very good year for me but it did help me get through this bad time. The Xbox 360 is the best console Microsoft ever produced and without its great games and features gaming would not be what it is today, nor would we have seen the new technologies developed. What a console and Im sure Xbox fans will agree the Xbox 360 will be remembered for many generations.More TrendingThanks for reading and heres to a spectacular 20th anniversary for the Xbox 360.By reader gaz be rotten (gamertag) The most successful Xbox (Microsoft)The readers features do not necessarily represent the views of GameCentral or Metro. You can submit your own 500 to 600-word reader feature at any time, which if used will be published in the next appropriate weekend slot. DinhRArchitects: NAW StudioAreaArea of this architecture projectArea:385 mYearCompletion year of this architecture project Year: 2023 PhotographsPhotographs:DinhR Lead Architects: NAW More SpecsLess SpecsSave this picture!Text description provided by the architects. Perhaps, land feng shui is always one of the major issues that Vietnamese homeowners are always concerned about when it comes to home design and construction. At the House + Studio, its special land position is the biggest problem that NAW studio needs to solve. Located on a 180 square meter plot of land, facing East - Northeast on My Thi Street in Da Nang City, the House + Studio has a location that makes the homeowner worry a lot about, which is directly opposite a large church, and a cemetery in the area. The family's daily activities always face many disadvantages because of this location.Save this picture! In addition, according to the homeowner's request, the house design must ensure that the living space of the two households living inside must be completely independent in traffic and living, but can still communicate conveniently with each other in daily life. That means the design must ensure the construction of two complete apartments inside the same house.Save this picture! The House + Studio, as its name suggests, is a combination of soft curves from the facade to the interior layout of the house. Curved architecture can create a sense of movement and flow inside the house. Curves can attract the eye and bring a sense of continuity while adding interest and aesthetic appeal to the architecture. Right from the facade, the curves are arranged in a certain ratio so that the architectural shape becomes the most prominent. Besides, this facade form is also an effective solution for blocking the view, limiting direct sunlight from inside the house to the shrine and vice versa.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Inside the house, there continue to be eye-catching curves cleverly divided into pieces, creating diverse visual fields during activities. The house consists of 1 ground floor and 2 floors, with the 1st and 2nd floors belonging to the owner of the 1st apartment, and the 3rd floor is a 2nd independent apartment. Traffic in the house is divided into two main vertical traffic axes; the 1st and 2nd floor stairs inside the house are used for apartment 1, and the front staircase runs through three floors and is the main entrance for apartment 2.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! Both apartments ensure all necessary functions of the living room, kitchen, bedroom, working room, auxiliary room, etc., complete for the whole family to live in. The main interior color tone is still a repetition of white, gray, and wood tones that are combined, emphasizing simplicity and efficiency in design, as well as expressing the personality of the homeowner.Save this picture! An indispensable part of any design by Naw studio is to handle the internal microclimate in the house itself. The solution that the NAW Studio chose for the House + Studio this time is the "Wind Trap" solution, a solution that is not new in architectural physics but is still very effective for this hot and sunny central weather. At first glance, you can see that the facade of the house is quite stuffy due to having to deal with the shielding according to the homeowner's wishes, but contrary to that outlook, the system of horizontal wind shutters will bring fresh air from outside into the house by the pressure difference created when there is a large vertical skylight right in the middle of the house. The wind penetrates every corner and quickly escapes outside from the skylight, creating continuous air convection to keep the house cool. The placement of green trees is also carefully calculated by the NAW Studio to optimize the quality of air brought into the house, with green patches always located at the air vents.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officeNAW StudioOfficeMaterialConcreteMaterials and TagsPublished on March 30, 2025Cite: "House + Studio / NAW Studio" 30 Mar 2025.
