  • Death Toll Passes 2,000 After Magnitude 7.7 Earthquake Hits Myanmar, Among the Most Powerful Quakes in the Region Since 1900
    www.smithsonianmag.com
The Myanmar Fire Services Department conducts emergency search and rescue operations after the March 28 earthquake. Myanmar Fire Services Department's Facebook Account / handout / Anadolu via Getty ImagesA devastating magnitude 7.7 earthquake, followed by powerful aftershocks, struck war-torn Myanmar on Fridaymarking one of the countrys strongest quakes in more than a century. Its epicenter was near Myanmars second largest city of Mandalay and the neighboring Sagaing in the central part of the country. Residents felt the shaking severely even in Thailands capital city, Bangkok, located hundreds of miles away.According to Myanmars military leaders, more than 2,000 deaths, 3,900 injured and 270 missing people were confirmed by Monday, as reported by the Associated Press David Rising. The United States Geological Survey (USGS), however, estimates the deaths could ultimately surpass 10,000. In Bangkok, the earthquake caused a skyscraper under construction to collapse, with 17 reported dead and 76 missing, per the United Nations (U.N.).The earthquake struck around 12:50 p.m. local time and occurred as the result of strike slip faulting between the India and Eurasia plates, the USGS tectonic summary reads. This type of earthquake results from a sideways motion along a fault line. What made this one especially deadly was its strength, location near populated areas and shallow depth of just about six miles, writes Science News Carolyn Gramling. Merely ten minutes later, the region was struck by a magnitude 6.4 aftershock. The shaking damaged public infrastructure, including buildings and roads, and it destroyed the bridge that connects Mandalay to Sagaing, said Marie Manrique, program coordinator for the International Federation of the Red Cross, to reporters, per Reuters Olivia Le Poidevin. Additionally, Manrique expressed concerns for large-scale dams.A situation report by the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs also outlines severe damage at hotels, universities, historical and religious sites, electricity and water infrastructure, communication towers and the Mandalay International Airport.I couldnt process what was happening. I just ran. I barely escaped. The moment I stepped outside, bricks started falling from the ceiling. We all ran to the open field near our house, recounts a 16-year-old student who was in Mandalay during the earthquake, in a Save the Children statement. This was the first earthquake I had ever experienced. It was terrifying.Since 1900, the region has experienced similarly powerful earthquakes six times, not including the most recent one, according to the USGS. In 1990, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake brought down 32 buildings. The New York Times Adam Satariano and Paul Mozur reported Friday that Myanmars military government is censoring some online information regarding the disaster. But the countrys hospitals are reportedly overwhelmed by patients necessitating medical care. Myanmar is currently in a civil war that followed a military coup in February 2021 and has displaced more than three million people. The situation is very complicated, because there are significant communication blackouts in some of the hardest hit areas, and this is due to the ongoing conflict, Federica Franco, the leader of Doctors Without Borders work in Myanmar, says in a voice note sent from Yangon and published by the humanitarian organization. The leader of the military government has announced an open invitation to any organizations and nations willing to come and help the people in need within our country, in what CNNs Ross Adkin, Alex Stambaugh and Kocha Olarn have described as a rare plea from a regime that had largely isolated itself from the world for years. Countries including China, India, Malaysia, Russia and Thailand have sent rescue teams to look for survivors among the rubble.Get the latest stories in your inbox every weekday.Filed Under: Death, Earthquakes, Natural Disasters

  • Archaeologists Unearth Rare Reminder of Britain's Brief Reign Over the 'Nation's Oldest City'
    www.smithsonianmag.com
The excavations that uncovered the British fortifications took place at the site of a proposed single-family home in St. Augustine, Florida. City of St. Augustine Archaeology ProgramWhen a house is slated to be built in the historic districts of St. Augustine, Florida, the city requires that archaeologists conduct a surveyand, if need be, an excavationof the site prior to construction. The aim of this rule, unusual in a state undergoing a population and development boom, is to salvage and document whatever remnants of the past might lie beneath the topsoil of the city that bills itself as the nations oldest.Last month, city archaeologists were called in to examine the proposed site of a single-family home in Lincolnville, a neighborhood that was once home to a Native American village, an orange grove plantation and a prominent historically Black community. As part of initial testing, the archaeologists dug 1-foot-by-1-foot holes across the vacant lot. Immediately, the site showed signs of intrigue. The soil just looked odd, recalls city archaeologist Andrea White on the Break Room, a podcast run by the city. It was mottled kind of like rye bread. It had different colors mixed in all together. So that tells us someone has dug this soil up before.Using ground-penetrating radar from the Florida Public Archaeology Network and a backhoe from the citys Department of Public Works, the researchers stripped back the soil from the site and discovered a long, 15-foot-wide ditch that extended across the property line. What they had unearthed was the first archaeological evidence of British fortifications built during the 20-year interlude when Britain controlled Florida in the mid-18th century.Britain took over St. Augustine in 1763, after the Treaty of Paris ended the Seven Years War and two centuries of Spanish rule over Florida. Founded by Spanish conquistadors under Pedro Menndez de Avils in 1565, St. Augustine served as the capital of British East Florida until the Spanish regained control of the peninsula after the American Revolution in 1783. Archaeologists excavate the site in St. Augustine's historic Lincolnville neighborhood. City of St. Augustine Archaeology ProgramDuring that 20-year period, the British inherited Spanish forts and added a network of seven redoubtslong, earthen moundsto beef up defenses.Thats whats interesting about these British redoubts, theyre the only defenses that the British built themselves, White tells the Associated Press David Fischer. This specific redoubt was built in 1781 as part of a secondary ring of defenses to protect the city from attacks from the west and the San Sebastian River, White says on the Break Room.Speaking with First Coast News Jessica Clark, White compares the redoubt to a gun platform or someplace [that] people could have used to shoot at their enemy.Unlike a garrison station or a full-fledged fort, the redoubt didnt house soldiers, so there was no refuse to discover, White tells the St. Augustine Records Lucia Viti. At best, maybe one or two soldiers were stationed at that location. Aerial view of the redoubt, marked by a darker color soil City of St. Augustine Archaeology ProgramFor this reason, artifacts discovered at the site have been sparse. But seeds found at the bottom of the ditch, including tobacco, okra and muscadine, could be evidence of historical agriculture or plants grown to reinforce the earthworks with their roots, according to the Break Room. When the British left St. Augustine two years after the redoubt was built, its likely that they razed the earthworks into ditches or let the once-grandiose defenses naturally deteriorate, White tells the Record.Despite the crucial role that the redoubts played in St. Augustines history, archaeologists have long struggled to pinpoint the exact location of the defenses.Part of the confusion arose from discrepancies between historical maps of British St. Augustine. Although several maps depict the redoubts, they all have slightly different sizes and dimensions, White tells the Break Room.Comparing historical maps bearing little resemblance to modern-day St. Augustine with very small house lots where archaeologists are allowed to dig is a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack, the citys archaeology program explains in a Facebook post. A general location plus or minus one [or] two city blocks leaves an awful lot of ground to cover. This time, the archaeologists got lucky. They hope that this first redoubt site can serve as an anchor to reference against the historical maps and locate the other six locations of the British defense network. Its a testament that even though weve been doing archaeology for over 30 years in St. Augustine, theres still more to find, Katherine Sims, an archaeologist for the city, tells First Coast News. You never really know until you put a shovel in the ground.Get the latest stories in your inbox every weekday.

Amaze founder and director steps back following investigation into "inappropriate" behaviorTeam apologized to "all the performers, DJs, artists, venue workers and visitors who were affected"Image credit: Amaze News by Vikki Blake Contributor Published on March 31, 2025 Amaze founder and director Thorsten Wiedemann has "stepped back" and apologized, admitting in a public statement that he had "acted inappropriately" and was "verbally offensive" towards colleagues and guests at an event in August. In a statement, the organisation - which celebrates independent and arthouse games, immersive media, and digital culture - acknowledged "violations" of its safe space policy and code of conduct occurred in Sheffield, UK.Citing "serious concerns about the safety and integrity of [its] events," the Amaze Berlin team confirmed it had investigated "different instances of unprofessional behavior leading up to the event and inappropriate conduct, as well as offensive verbal comments and non-sexual harassment under the influence of alcohol during the event."Calling such behavior "unacceptable," the team apologized to "all members of the Sheffield production, the performers, DJs, artists, venue workers, and visitors who were affected."Wiedemann also individually apologized, stating: "I want to sincerely apologize for my behavior at Amaze Sheffield in August 2024. Reflecting on my actions, I recognize that I acted inappropriately and will take full responsibility. I yelled at the production and organizing team when the party was shut down, which was completely disrespectful. I was verbally offensive towards a participating DJ and their music, which was uncalled for. I invaded others' personal space, which was inconsiderate and out of line."I deeply regret my behavior throughout the event and understand how it negatively impacted others. This was entirely wrong, and I am committed to learning from this experience to ensure it never happens again and try to repair what got broken."To those affected, and to the Amaze Berlin team and community, Im sorry for betraying your trust. I am grateful to those who came forward and reported the incidents," Wiedemann added."As a consequence, I will step back from my role in this years Berlin festival program and pause all representative and handover partner duties. This will allow the team the space to strengthen our Safer Space policies and ensure the integrity of all future events."Wiedemann added that Amaze was founded to "create a respectful, inclusive, and inspiring space within the games and cultural industries," stating: "That mission remains unchanged. Misconduct - whether by guests, team members, or myself - has no place in this community."As a consequence of the upheld complaint, Wiedemann will "temporarily step back" from all "public roles" and will not attend the Amaze Berlin 2025 program. The organisation has also decentralized the decision-making process and delegated key responsibilities, committing to creating safer spaces, ensuring all events adhere to its code of conduct, and updating its emergency response structure."Amaze is more than one person," Wiedemann concluded. "Its a global movement built by many. I hope that during my absence, you will give me the opportunity to improve and learn from my mistakes so that we can continue working toward our visionbringing diverse artists from around the world together and elevating arthouse games to a new level."

  • How to Build a Prototype X-ray Judgment Tool (Open Source Medical Inference System) Using TorchXRayVision, Gradio, and PyTorch
    www.marktechpost.com
In this tutorial, we demonstrate how to build a prototype X-ray judgment tool using open-source libraries in Google Colab. By leveraging the power of TorchXRayVision for loading pre-trained DenseNet models and Gradio for creating an interactive user interface, we show how to process and classify chest X-ray images with minimal setup. This notebook guides you through image preprocessing, model inference, and result interpretation, all designed to run seamlessly on Colab without requiring external API keys or logins. Please note that this demo is intended for educational purposes only and should not be used as a substitute for professional clinical diagnosis.!pip install torchxrayvision gradioFirst, we install the torchxrayvision library for X-ray analysis and Gradio to create an interactive interface.import torchimport torchxrayvision as xrvimport torchvision.transforms as transformsimport gradio as grWe import PyTorch for deep learning operations, TorchXRayVision for Xray analysis, torchvisions transforms for image preprocessing, and Gradio for building an interactive UI.model = xrv.models.DenseNet(weights="densenet121-res224-all")model.eval() Then, we load a pre-trained DenseNet model using the densenet121-res224-all weights and set it to evaluation mode for inference.try: pathology_labels = model.meta["labels"] print("Retrieved pathology labels from model.meta.")except Exception as e: print("Could not retrieve labels from model.meta. • Logitech G Pro X TKL Rapid Gaming Keyboard Review
    www.ign.com
Logitech is entering a new generation of its Pro series product line of PC peripherals, which focuses on high-performance gaming. With the Pro X TKL Rapid, we have a tenkeyless keyboard chock-full of fresh features centered around a magnetic switch technology thats new for Logitech, wedging itself among some of the best gaming keyboards available today. This comes with intricately adjustable functionality and robust RGB customization Logitech users have become accustomed to. After putting it through its paces, the Pro X TKL Rapid proves to be an impressive piece of gear that abandons most flashy aesthetics in favor of letting the keys be the star of the show.At first glance, the TKL Rapid looks like any other Logitech G series keyboard. Its a simple black rectangle with thin bezels with RGB lights shining through each key. Hovering atop the standard layout are a series of media keys and a large volume control wheel on the top right, which is quite nice to use. Because of its tenkeyless design, the TKL Rapid has a mercifully small footprint for a keyboard focused on performance, I appreciate how much it doesnt get in the way of whatever else is happening on my desk.Logitech G Pro X TKL Rapid - PhotosIts visible parts dont stand out on the black colorway, which is the model Ive been testing. For those who want a little more visual pizazz, it comes in white or pink variants as well. The keys are made of recycled ABS plastic, as is the frame, with a solid aluminum slab supporting the keyboards frame. There are certainly better quality and more stylish keycaps out there, but what comes stock is comfortable enough, if not completely unremarkable in feel at least it doesnt stand out for any bad reasons. The keys are stable on the switches, with no wiggle that Ive noticed on the keycaps. Of course, these are parts keyboard enthusiasts can swap out, and the TKL Rapid is compatible with third-party keycaps if you want to make it more unique. The TKL Rapids special sauce is under the caps in the debuting magnetic analog switches and its further enhanced by the level of customization within Logitechs robust G Hub app. The move from mechanical to analog switches to make gaming better isnt just a marketing move; it really can make a difference (as is the case in the many Hall Effect gaming keyboards weve reviewed recently). Instead of having a set actuation point built into a mechanism, analog switches can be adjusted via software and set the actuation point of each key, letting it recognize inputs at varying travel distances without having to swap out the switch. Even better, it can be changed on each individual key, allowing for incredible personalization. Logitech G Hub Software - ScreenshotsStraight out of the box, my first hours using the keyboard were troubling, but once I dialed in the right settings, the experience came together nicely. On default settings, I was initially consistently mistyping, chalking it up to getting used to the device. After a lengthy session of using the keyboard, it simply didnt feel quite right. Thats until I installed G Hub and started messing around with the actuation point of my keys. By default, the Pro X TKL Rapid is set to a 2.0mm actuation, which was a little too shallow for my typing style, especially considering the keyboards superlight 35g actuation force. Luckily, this can be shifted anywhere between the extremely light touch of 0.1mm to almost the complete depth of the key press at 4.0mm. Once I dialed in around 3.0mm, it was a revelation, and I started enjoying the keyboard a whole lot more. The more you tweak the Logitech G Pro X TKL Rapid, the more youll get from this remarkable keyboard. Its notable that while we are dealing with magnetic technology, adjusting the actuation point doesnt change the pressure needed to press a key, which doesnt take much, considering the TKL Rapid is made with competitive gaming in mind. Rather, it reads magnetic fields within the switch as the key travels and triggers at whatever distance is set for that key in G Hub. Logitech isnt a pioneer with these switches, and Hall Effect is gradually becoming the standard in high-end keyboards, but theyre utilized very well in this model and helped open my mind on whats possible with a gaming keyboard.Complementing the adjustable actuation points is Rapid Trigger, a feature that affects how far upward the key needs to ascend before it is considered to be released. If you use it, the key doesnt have to return to its default position to reset, which has had promising results while playing games. Testing the feature with Diablo IV, I was undoubtedly unleashing my abilities faster, setting the Rapid Trigger to reset at 0.5mm, with a range of 0.1mm to 2.0mm to play with. It certainly makes a difference in fast-paced games where a critically-timed button press is of the utmost importance.Looking to upgrade your mouse, too?Logitech G502 X LightspeedLogitech brings its high-performance Hero sensor to the ergonomic workhorse in the G502. Its deep grooves, solid grip, and wide base make it super comfortable and the extra buttons elevate it as a productivity workhorse.See it at AmazonCheck out our roundup of the best gaming mice! Not only can you globally set the actuation points and Rapid Trigger for the entire keyboard, but each key can be adjusted individually for both features and save profiles to be loaded for specific games when they launch. Your Overwatch 2 setting preferences are bound to be different from League of Legends or Path of Exile, and I absolutely love how I can fine-tune the TKL Rapid for each game in mind. Because there are a lot of complications with every key potentially having different activation and release points, the TKL Rapid includes a Key Priority setting. With this tool, I was able to pair two keys that may be pressed around the same time, like my Mages spells on the number row in World of Warcraft, and determine which one is more important to be the one that is accepted at that moment. There are varying options like Key Travel Priority, which chooses the key thats pressed furthest, or Absolute Priority, which will, well, choose which one key will absolutely work instead of the other. As someone who sometimes fumbles my spells in tense situations, it certainly helped clean up my casting rotation during dungeons and eliminate mistakes. But really, this is Logitech's version of SOCD input, or simultaneous opposite cardinal direction, which is a contentious feature in competitive gaming. In a shooter, this lets you counter-strafe (or jiggle strafe) without interuption which would be impossible otherwise, making you a much harder target. You can, and will, get kicked from Counter-Strike 2 matches, for example. (We found out the hard way when reviewing the Razer BlackWidow V4 Pro 75.) If you use this feature, just be mindful of the context in which you use it in.Taking the Plank to GoWhile its not the typical use case for a keyboard like this, during my time with the Pro X TKL Rapid, I took it with me on a road trip, and it traveled surprisingly well. Due to its tenkeyless design, its narrower frame fits wonderfully in my backpack. Paired with its removable USB-C cable thats slim enough to slip into an available pocket, I didnt have to worry about sacrificing critical space next to or around the keyboard. The keys are still full-sized, so theres still a consideration of how far they protrude, but Im happy to report its not at all farfetched to take the TKL Rapid on the go.Of course, being a premium product, Logitechs usual suite of features applies to the TKL Rapid. It features full RGB lighting on every key, which can be adjusted per key in G Hub. It hits just about every color in the rainbow except a clean white and some shades of purple, which both end up more blue than anything, which is slightly disappointing. Game Mode is also available, with a physical button above the first section of F keys, which disables buttons like the Windows and menu keys, which can interrupt heated matches if pressed by mistake. In addition, it provides the option to choose which other keys youd like to wipe the functionality off, leaving only your critical keys active while Game Mode is engaged. Along with key mapping and more layout profiles to flip through with G-Shift, the TKL Pro is endlessly customizable for whatever game you want to adapt to.Purchasing GuideThe Logitech G Pro X TKL Rapid is available for $169.99 from retailers such as Amazon or directly from the Logitech. While we received the black color scheme for review, it also comes in bright magenta and all-white colorway.
