  • Why DOOM: The Dark Ages Will be the Best DOOM Ever
    gamingbolt.com
Doom isnt typically an experience you associate the word large with. Replayable, yes. Rife with secrets, definitely. Rip and tear? Until it is done. But classic Doom, Doom 2, and even Doom 64 are considerably well-paced romps of brutality. Even DOOM (2016) feels easily digestible in that regard its not impossible to finish its story within two evenings and have your feel of demonic deconstruction.DOOM Eternal changed that, which was apparent in how long your average stage (and encounter) could take to complete, depending on your mastery of the mechanics and knowledge of where to go. A higher skill ceiling is nothing to fuss about, but id Software went further by stuffing the title with all the lore and world-building it could muster. You could get by with a glance at the Slayers Testaments in 2016, but Eternal demanded you understand the gravity, the weight of the conflict and its players. Suffice it to say that there is so much going on in the DOOM universe beyond the copious amounts of demonic disembowelment. Both parts of its DLC are their own full-fledged game in terms of content and complexity; everything combined makes for one of the biggest first-person shooter campaigns ever. On average, HowLongToBeat estimates that the entire main story of Eternal and its DLC could take 24 hours to complete. Completionists could easily hit 41 hours if they aim for everything (and you should, since theres a wealth of content and secrets to discover). Why does any of this matter? Because when I tell you that DOOM: The Dark Ages is shaping up to be the biggest, and perhaps even the greatest DOOM yet, its magnitude is apparent.First is the setting. The Dark Ages addresses an essential component of the Slayers story namely, what happened before the events of DOOM (2016). While id Software hasnt confirmed whether well experience every little detail the Doom Marines arrival in Argent Dnur, his joining the Night Sentinels, and eventually becoming the only thing that demons fear it promises that fans will witness the Slayers creation and turns the tide of the war.For some perspective, the battles described in Argent Dnur arent the skirmishes seen in DOOM (2016) or DOOM Eternal. These are full-fledged warzones, where the Sentinels face off against hordes of demons. No, the Slayer isnt suddenly going all Battlefield, but its worth appreciating how much larger the conflicts are, both in scale and importance. Youre controlling a brutal weapon of war, but youre still fighting in the same war, which means levels to your delivery of death.Weve already seen that with the new dragon mount and Atlan mech. id has already confirmed that these arent specific set pieces youll control for brief moments but are fully fleshed out with their own mechanics. Dogfights with demonic forces and landing in structures to clear out foes before jumping back into the fray seem to be the order of the day. As for the Atlan, youll go toe-to-toe with giant demons in kaiju-like battles of a scale unlike any seen thus far. Whether youre a fan of Pacific Rim, Power Rangers or SHOGO: Mobile Armor Division (rest in peace, Monolith), this alone could be worth the price of admission. But thats only the tip of the iceberg. Several weapons like the Shotgun and Super Shotgun return in classic fashion, but almost everything else has been revamped from top-to-bottom. Then you have the new guns like the Skull Crusher, which uses skulls as ammo and grinds them into shards to launch at enemies, outright eviscerating them up close.Meanwhile, the Railspike is perfect for Half-Life fans who miss the crossbow, allowing them to pin enemies into walls and provide some much-needed home dcor for Hell. Then you have the new melee weapons like the flail, mace and gauntlet or the Shield Saw, which allows for parrying and throwing at enemies like a buzzsaw. And while the acrobatics of DOOM Eternal made for some fun times, The Dark Ages is aiming for a heavier, meaner Slayer. One more grounded and powerful, built like a tank (with Frank Millers The Dark Knight cited as an inspiration). Yet it also brings us back to the era of classic Doom with its boots-on-the-ground approach. The action will be unrelentingly furious, though, with even more demons to battle than ever before. But above all else, id Software promises this to be the biggest campaign its ever made by a good bit. Director Hugo Martin said its really long, with an extensive amount of side content to discover. I think its gonna be mostly about secret hunting. If you explore all the secrets and youre a completionist, youre certainly gonna make it a much larger experience for yourself. He also hypes the levels as the largest spaces weve ever made. However, they arent going to be too long, with the team referring to an hour as the sweet spot to ensure they dont overstay their welcome. Even if youre not going out of your way to discover everything, this is a massive campaign delivering tons of variety. One example provided by Martin to EDGE is how you could begin in a dungeon-like space which transitions in the second half of the level into a more open-ended portion.Further sealing the deal is the lack of multiplayer and while that translates to fewer marketing blurbs compared to DOOM (2016) or Eternal, it also means id Software could devote all its attention to the campaign. As executive producer Marty Stratton explained, We know that our campaigns are to a great extent what people come to the modern DOOM games to play, so we decided to put all of our efforts behind that and really create the biggest and best DOOM game weve ever made.Scrapping multiplayer also means the studio can focus on features like the dragon mount and Atlan mech. I dont know about you but those are some pretty nice compromises after everything weve seen thus far. What truly sells this for me is id Software understanding that bigger doesnt automatically equal better. It isnt trying to create these large meandering levels just to drag on the campaign or add as much content as possible to ensure you get your $70 worth. The pacing, the level of polish, the emphasis on story-telling and its importance (especially for such a critical juncture of the Slayers life) the team is focusing on these things to provide the best possible experience for fans.DOOM: The Dark Ages launches on May 15th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC alongside Game Pass. And as I look back on the series and how far its come with its scale, fidelity, and the sheer amount of secrets and variety of demons to stomp, it really does feel like a culmination of everything thus far. The best of the old and new, but elevated to new heights and begging for players to fully uncover its depths.Note: The views expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of, and should not be attributed to, GamingBolt as an organization.

And for those who really want to test their platforming skills, an Online Mode with events and leaderboards is also included.Tempest RisingIf youve been feeling the lack of any Command and Conquer-like titles over the past several years, Slipgate Ironworks Tempest Rising may help. Its out on April 24th for PC, offering two playable factions with unique units, two campaigns, online multiplayer, custom games, and the base-building real-time strategy you know and love.Forever SkiesA survival crafting game in a post-apocalyptic setting may not inspire the most interest, but Forever Skies offers some intriguing spins on the formula. Instead of exploring the dust-covered Earth on foot, youre venturing through the skies on an airship, gathering resources to upgrade it from various skyscrapers and structures. What awaits on the surface? Youll have to find out when Forever Skies exits early access and launches on April 14th for PS5 and PC.Crashlands 2The sequel to Butterscotch Shenanigans survival crafting classic finally arrives on April 10th and sees Flux Dabes returning to Woanope to reunite with her buddies. Things quickly go wrong though, and after yet another crash landing, she embarks on a journey to find out whats happening while combating dangerous creatures, unlocking upgrades, and more. With vastly improved visuals, new recipes, and more, Crashlands 2 could be the perfect cozy crafting sim for fans when it launches on PC, iOS, and Android.Monaco 2Speaking of a long-awaited sequel to a classic title, Monaco 2 also launches on April 10th for PC, Xbox Series X/S and PS5. Much like the original, youre still conducting heists alone or with up to three other players but there are new characters and playstyles and Blueprint Mode for finer planning. Whether youre in it for the zany yet stylish campaign or the long haul with its procedurally generated levels, Monaco 2 should be a worthy follow-up.

  • Britain's Famous Sutton Hoo Helmet May Have Come From Denmark, Not Sweden, New Discovery Suggests
    www.smithsonianmag.com
Peter Pentz, a curator at the National Museum of Denmark, sees many similarites between the stamp and the Sutton Hoo helmet. John Fhr Engedal Nissen / The National Museum of DenmarkTwo years ago, Jan Hjort was using a metal detector to scan a field on the Danish island of Tsinge when he discovered a small piece of metal covered in engravings. At first, Hjort didnt think much of his find. But when he took a closer look, he realized hed likely stumbled upon something remarkable. Now, researchers say Hjorts find has the potential to rewrite the history of one of Britains most famous artifacts. The images on the small metal stamp are similar to those found on the Sutton Hoo helmet, which was unearthed from an Anglo-Saxon ship burial site in Britain in 1939.Archaeologists have long theorized the helmet originated in Sweden. But Hjorts discovery suggests it may have come from Denmark instead. Discovered in pieces, the Sutton Hoo helmet has been carefully pieced back together. It's now on display at the British Museum. The Trustees of the British MuseumThe helmet was among more than 260 items discovered at an estate in Suffolk, England, in the late 1930s. Self-taught archaeologist Basil Brown and landowner Edith Pretty unearthed elaborately decorated weapons, armor, military equipment, gold coins, horse bridles and an 88-foot-long burial ship that once held human remains. The treasures date to the sixth or seventh century C.E.Scholars believe Sutton Hoo may have been the final resting place of Raedwald, a king of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of East Anglia who died around 624 C.E. The site drew comparisons to Egypts Valley of the Kings, and the hoard became known as Britains Tutankhamun. The helmet was found in pieces, which researchers painstakingly pieced back together. The restored helmetwhich is made of iron and tinned copper alloyis now on display at the British Museum and often appears on guidebooks and posters, per the London Times Kaya Burgess.Functional and beautiful, the helmet is covered in intricate imagery, including bears, warriors on horseback and a dragon. Because of similarities to motifs found on helmets in eastern Sweden, archaeologists long assumed the Sutton Hoo helmet originated there, too. They suspected it might have been an heirloom or a diplomatic gift to Raedwald. But the newly discovered metal stamp, which is known as a patrice, suggests the helmet could have come from Denmark, according to a translatedstatementfrom the National Museum of Denmark. Researchers discovered many similarities between the two artifacts, including the shape of the horses harness, the cuff on the warriors wrist and the warriors hair. The horses also appear to be almost identical. The small metal stamp was discovered on the Danish island of Tsinge. Mads Lou Bendtsen / The National Museum of DenmarkThe stylistic similarities are so significant, says Peter Pentz, a curator at the National Museum of Denmark, to BBC News Adrienne Murray and James Brooks. This is the closest link we've ever seen. The motifs are so similar that Pentz believes they were not only made in the same place, but were also made by the same craftsmen, according to the statement. If the Suttoo Hoo helmet did come from Denmark, that revelation could significantly alter our understanding of the power dynamics in Northern Europe during the 7th century, Pentz tells Arkeonews. It suggests Denmark played a more influential role in Northern Europe than historians previously thought. Denmark may even have been one of the regions leading central powers, with England and Sweden as peripheral outposts. But not everyone is convinced the stamp proves a link between the Sutton Hoo helmet and Denmark, per BBC News. Its possible the stamp originated somewhere else and then was transported to Denmark, for example. And similar motifs have also been found in Germany, which suggests they may not be unique to Denmark.Researchers hope to perform 3D scans of the helmet and the stamp so they can make a more detailed comparison. In the meantime, the metal stamp will be displayed at the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen starting in April.Get the latest stories in your inbox every weekday.Filed Under: Archaeology, Denmark, England, European History, History, Sweden

  • A Gladiator's Marble-Etched Epitaph Is Found in an Ancient Roman Necropolis
    www.smithsonianmag.com
Researchers found grave goods while excavating theLiternum necropolis. Naples Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts and LandscapeOver 2,200 years ago, the Republic of Rome founded a colony called Liternum on Italys west coast, just north of present-day Naples. Once home to Cornelius Scipio Africanus, a famed Roman general who defeated Hannibal, the former port city is now an archaeological park, and its ruins include a forum, temple, amphitheater and various burials, including those of Scipio Africanus andas researchers recently discoveredat least one gladiator.According to a translated statement by Naples Superintendent of Archaeology, Fine arts and Landscape, an excavation led by archaeologist Simona Formola recently unearthed two embellished tombs in Liternums necropolis, as well as many smaller burials. The two decorated funerary enclosures were once covered in white plaster and painted red. Theyre separated by a very deep stone well, which may have served a ritualistic purpose, per the statement. One of the enclosures contains a square mausoleum measuring almost 100 square feet. The structure is made of opus reticulatumbricks laid in a diamond patternand contains a volcanic rock called tuff: details suggesting high status individuals were buried here, as Artnet News Richard Whiddington reports. Inside the mausoleum, niches were cut into the plaster, likely to hold funerary urns spanning generations. An aerial view of the excavated cemetery Naples Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape One decorated tomb was plastered and painted red. Naples Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts and LandscapeSurrounding the enclosures in the Liternum necropolis are some 20 other burials, including cappuccina tombssimple burials reserved for lower-class ancient Romans. Cappuccina tombs were typically made of clay roof tiles, arranged to form a peaked enclosure over the deceased. The necropolis also contains enchytrismos burials, in which a body is buried inside a large ceramic jug, and some well-crafted, rectangular tombs made of bricks. One of the Liternum necropolis graves is marked by a slab of engraved marble: It indicates the deceased was a gladiator, one of the many slaves or criminals forced to fight and die for the entertainment of ancient Romans in amphitheaters like the Colosseum. A few gladiators rose to prominencelike Spartacus, who led a slave rebellion against the republicbut most of these men were simply expendable pieces of entertainment for Rome. As the local official writes on Facebook, the recently discovered epitaph is a rare and touching testimony to the memory of these fighters in Roman society.Based on the burial structures and artifacts found in the Liternum graveslike coins, lamps and small vasesresearchers believe the cemetery was used between the latter first century B.C.E. and the third century C.E. This era aligns with the onset of Romes Imperial period, which began with the rise of Augustus, the first Roman emperor, around 27 B.C.E. Within the next few centuries, the Roman Empire reached peak power and expansiveness. Researchers found cappuccina tombs, simple burials made of clay roof tiles. Naples Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape The cemetery contained upper-class mausoleums and lower-class individual burials. Naples Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts and LandscapeAnother significant discovery in the Liternum graveyard came last year, when Formolas team opened its Tomb of Cerberus and discovered frescoes depicting not only the eponymous Hound of Hades, but also marine centaurs. The necropolis has illuminated ancient Roman funerary practices, according to the superintendent.Mariano Nuzzo in the statement. This necropolis, thanks to its excellently preserved wall structures and tombs, adds an important piece to our knowledge regarding the history of the colony of Liternum.
