It does so many things, but because you have to log into it on so many devices, theres always a risk of your account being compromised, even if you are careful. How can you tell if your Apple Account has been hacked? And if so, what can you do to get back control? Here are a few things you should know in case your Apple Account has been compromised.Warnings that your Apple Account has been compromisedApple may alert you to any suspicious activity with your Apple Account, but depending on how it has been compromised, here are some warning signs that someone is making an unauthorized attempt to access your Apple Account:Notifications. Apple sends a notification or an email when an attempt to log on from an unrecognized device, or when an attempt to change your password is made.Unsolicited two-factor authentication code. You get a code that you did not request, or you did not perform an action that triggers a code.Password failure. Your password stops working and messages appear that you need to input your password.Unusual activity. You notice things are happening that you didnt do, such as deleted files or sent emails or texts, or you may see an unfamiliar device in the Devices section of your Apple Account in Settings. How to check if someone is using your Apple AccountAside from the above warnings, one surefire way to see if someone has accessed your Apple Account is to check the devices associated with your account. When signing into your Apple Account on the web, youll see a Devices tab in the left column. Check it and youll see all devices that are connected to your Apple ID so you can check it for any unrecognizable ones. If you see any, you can click a device and click the Remove from account button to delete it. Its a good practice to remove older devices as well in case you want to sell them or give them to a friend.Your Apple Account information on the web at account.apple.com.FoundryHow to regain control of your Apple AccountIf you cant log into your Apple Account and think someone else has control of it, here is what you can do to take back the keys.Reset your Apple Account password. • I cant wait to make an appointment with Apples AI doctor
    www.macworld.com
MacworldWith Apple having delayed its most ambitious Apple Intelligence features, you might find yourself thinking: its probably best if the company just focuses on other endeavors for the time being, like a rumored iOS redesign or even pushing forward its Vision Pro platform. Nope, not so much. According to a report from Bloombergs Mark Gurman, Apple is embarking on future AI-based features, including most prominently an AI-based doctor dubbed Project Mulberry.Yep: Just when you think youre done talking about AI, they pull you back in.It aint called hardware because its easyOn the face of it, this venture is no surprise. Apples been heavily invested in health technology for yearsIve argued in the past that its a signature endeavor of Tim Cooks tenure as Apple CEO. From the Apple Watch to the Health app, Apple has made it clear that it considers health features part of the core functionality of its platform.Apple seems to have hit a wall when it comes to developing more health features in its hardware. So software and AI seem like a natural transition.FoundryBut the company has found itself stymied on the hardware front in recent years. Reported attempts to develop both non-invasive glucose tracking and blood pressure monitoring have proved to be difficult nuts to crack, and will probably take a few more years before they are practical. Fundamentally, those are just very difficult problems to solve when youre limited to products like a watch on the wrist or headphones in peoples ears.Given those limitations, it makes sense that Apple would turn to software solutions to fill in the gaps in the health arena. And on the face of it, some of what AI technology offers provides a reasonable option: the ability to synthesize and summarize disparate data and turn that into helpful advice. But, surprise, surprise, its not without its potential pitfalls.Doctor, doctor, Mr. MDAccording to Gurmans report, Apple is working on training this AI doctor on information from in-house physicians. Which, while positive, doesnt necessarily eliminate the risks of relying on AI technologyspecifically, its tendency to make up information. Even in cases where large language models are trained on specific data, it still demonstrates those kinds of problems. Obviously, health is an extremely sensitive area: one would have to be extremely careful not to give incorrect advice that might inadvertently lead to harm.Image Playgrounds results arent very impressive. Can an Apple Intelligence health advisor do better?FoundryOne option would be to carefully control and monitor inputs and outputs as Apple does with some of its other AI-based products, such as Image Playground. But as Image Playgrounds mediocre output demonstrates, thats not without its own problemsa health agent that is carefully controlled could result in offering anodyne, common-sensical advice: sleep more, eat better, exercise more. One hardly needs any technology feature, much less an AI-based one, to provide those kinds of insights. But the risk is that no matter how well Apple trains its model, it cant avoid the possibility of bad advice. The non-deterministic nature of an AI language model means you cant predict exactly what output it will give. And if its untrustworthy, just like in the case of a feature that tells you when to leave to pick your mom up at the airport, people simply wont use it. Health is a place where people dont want to mess around, and even a one-percent chance of bad advice will likely be too much for a lot of people.Health and human servicesAll of that said, it is worth noting Apples excellent track record with health and fitness. Features like AirPods Pros Hearing Aid and the Apple Watchs A-Fib detection have had meaningful impacts on peoples lives, and many of those features themselves rely on machine learning in one form or another. The devil is always in the details, and reports like these only give us part of the picture. Peoplemyself includedare, I think, rightly skeptical whenever a new feature purports to be based on AI, given the contentious nature of the technology. Its entirely possible that what we envision this feature to be is not exactly what Apple will eventually roll outif it even ends up bringing it all the way to fruition, hardly a guarantee given its recent track record.Still, a move like this is classic Apple, not necessarily just about selling more productseven services, for which the company is notably hungry for revenuebut about enhancing its platform and making it more attractive to consumers. And I even believe, if I may be permitted a non-cynical moment, because the company is truly passionate about helping its customers live happy and healthy lives.

  • The future of AI search is Googles to lose
    www.computerworld.com
When Google unveiled a new neural network design in 2017 called the Transformer architecture, it probably had no idea this would threaten Google Searchs dominance within seven years. When OpenAI applied Googles Transformer architecture to generative language models, the GPT was born. (GPT stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer.)OpenAI then took the GPT concept and created a chatbot by incorporating reinforcement learning from human feedback, ranked responses, dialogue optimizations, and safety measures. The result was ChatGPT, which OpenAI made public on Nov. 30, 2022.ChatGPT changed the world. Now, AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Metas Meta AI, Microsofts Copilot, Anthropics Claude AI, Perplexity AIs Perplexity, xAIs Grok, and even Googles own Gemini are changing how people search for information online. Instead of relying on Google, some users are turning to AI chatbots. To stop bleeding users, Google has been planning to integrate its own AI technology into the Google Search Experience for the general public, first with AI Overviews in May 2024, which now reportedly has more than 1 billion users, and more recently withAI Mode(March 2025).AI Mode is an experimental serviceavailable to people who signed up for Google Search Labs. Its based on a customized version of Googles Gemini 2.0.Note that AI Overviews, which many users found initially problematic (recommending glue for pizza recipes or suggesting the health benefits of eating rocks), was based on Gemini 1.5 Flash until March when it was updated to Gemini 2.0.In its current state, Googles AI Mode is truly great. Its better than most comparable chatbots in several respects, especially two very important ones. Why attribution mattersThe best feature is that Google surfaces attribution. Just last week, Ico-hosted a TWiT podcast about AIcalled Intelligent Machines, where I advocated for RAG-based chatbots (Retrieval-Augmented Generation systems like Perplexity that use data from searches in their results, rather than just the old data in their training datasets) showing their links conspicuously on the right side of the search. Im in favor of highlighting and offering the easiest access to the actual sources of information rather than stolen knowledge being genericized, commoditized, and buried by AI chatbots. What I described and advocated for in that podcast is exactly what Google Searchs AI Mode does.Like Perplexity, Google AI Mode is a RAG system that performs a Google Search (Perplexity uses Googles PageRank, too), then gets its information for the result from the pages on the other side of those links. But Google AI Mode does a better job showing the main links used for information provided in the answer, complete with an image for each link drawn from the source, where available. This is importantfor the reasons Ive already detailed. AI chatbots are threatening to bury and replace the very sources theyre built on. By highlighting the sources with links, users can explore those original sources from the chatbot response you know, like a search engine.Still, Google understands that even with highlighted sourcing, people are far less likely to click through to linked sources than with Google Search.Less is moreAnother surprising AI Mode virtue is brevity. Unlike most AI chatbots, which often provide long-winded explanations that go off into tangents and background content, Googles AI Mode gets right to the point with very concise responses. Results tend to be very high quality. AI Mode uses whats called a query fan-out technique to handle complex searches. It turns a prompt into multiple related queries targeting different subtopics and data sources, and the results are then combined into a single, detailed response that covers more ground than a traditional search. It also uses a method called agentic reinforcement learning, developed with Googles DeepMind group, to improve the accuracy of its AI-generated responses. This technique rewards the model for producing statements that are more likely to be correct and supported by reliable sources, such as Googles Knowledge Graph or live web data, while also encouraging the retrieval of additional factual information.Despite all this, Google warns that AI Mode can hallucinate, lie, give opinions instead of facts, and generally misbehave in the ways AI chatbots sometimes do.AI Mode offers a surprisingly appealing user interface with a responsive design and fluid layout. And its fast. Besides these qualities, AI Mode has other, more standard benefits found elsewhere, including multimodal queries support, meaning it accepts voice, text, or image inputs. If the subject of the prompt is deemed controversial or problematic in some way, AI Mode throws up its conceptual hands and delivers a list of URLs like old-fashioned Google Search rather than a typed-out response. When AI Mode becomes the leading search option offered by Google and I think thats likely the book on SEO will have to be torn up and re-written. At this point, its not clear how, exactly. Beyond that, the rules for advertising will also need to be re-written.AI Mode is currently a fantastic search replacement. But in the future, how Google handles monetization will make or break the service.Advertising and the future of searchGoogle isnt exactly sure how it will integrate ads into AI Mode searches. If AI Overviews suggests a direction, then Googles AI Mode will likely show ads under the AI answer and will be labeled Sponsored. The ads will come from the same places as normal Google ads, like Search and Shopping, and will try to match the content searched for. The ads should link to things that are helpful for your search. For example, if you search for how-to information like how to get wine stains out of a shirt, ads for Wine Away and other such products will appear below or within the results.Ultimately, its advertising thats likely to lead AI Mode astray, given how Google Search itself has evolved over time.Ads now often blend seamlessly with organic search results, making it harder for users to distinguish between paid content and genuine information. The prominence of ads pushes organic content further down the page, especially on mobile devices, reducing visibility for non-sponsored links and forcing users to scroll more to find unbiased results. Googles strategy of embedding ads within organic listings also disrupts the traditional flow of search results, subtly prioritizing monetization over clarity and usability. So, while AI Mode is a refreshing change from plain old Google Search and clearly one of the best AI chatbots out there, Im pessimistic that Google will be able to monetize the feature without making the user experience much worse. Its a real challenge, because the company really depends on search-based ad revenue. How Google can keep making money on search ads in the age of AI, smart glasses and other trends isnt yet clear. But changes are coming. And it will be interesting to see how Google navigates the future of AI search and advertising.

  • How and where Trump's new tariffs affect Apple
    appleinsider.com
President Trump's new tariffs go far beyond China, and hit every nation in the world. Here's how badly Apple has been hit, and where it has been struck globally.Donald Trump's signed tariff plan - Photo credit CNBCIn February 2025, the Bank of America said that the impact of tariffs on Apple would be significant. Before the extent of the tariffs were announced, Bank of America estimated that they would mean Apple may have to raise iPhone prices by 10%.Apple has yet to make any announcements about price changes. It might have attempted to swallow small increases in component costs, but it is unlikely to absorb these massive ones. The company has previously made a point of how it has kept the iPhone costs the same for years although only in the US. Continue Reading on AppleInsider | Discuss on our Forums

  • Suburbia 2.0: Design Solutions for Sustainable Sprawl, From Dead Ends to Destinations

Architects: Want to have your project featured? Showcase your work by uploading projects to Architizerand sign up for ourinspirational newsletters.Picket fences, emerald lawns, and colorfully painted houses, neatly arranged in linear and circular rows, were once the hallmarks of the American Dream. In the 1950s, living in the suburbs, far away from the hustle of the bustling city, was a symbol of the ideal life and yet, even back then, the concept of suburbia was always a struggle in architectural debates. The reinforced segregation, the false visions of idyllic domesticity, and the uniform and counter-normative designs posed great challenges for architects dealing with the suburbs.Today, urban sprawl has once again taken center stage in architectural discussions. In this post-pandemic era, the rising housing market, refugee crises and youth unemployment are driving more people toward the outskirts of cities, forcing them into an urban model that does not truly meets their needs. For decades now, suburbs were considered somewhat of a dead zone, where trade, culture and entertainment could be accessed only by commuting to the big city. Still, concepts like the 15-minute city and mixed-use architecture are gradually explored as a means to improve the suburbia model in response to the rapid urban sprawl. Consequently, can the suburbia design be adapted to meet the demands of the future or does the solution lie in abandoning the model altogether?Real de los Reyes by Miguel de la Torre mta+v, Coyoacn, Mexico CityWhat defines a suburb? At its core, the single-family home serves as the fundamental unit of suburbia. The streets, highways, and infrastructural grid shape its most dominant features, while a handful of shopping centers, scattered along the outskirts, provide access to essential goods and community services. But what if we reimagined and redesigned these three defining elements? In the 1920s, Frank Lloyd Wright intensified and extended the single family home. He brought the logic of the skyscraper to the domestic scale, constructing housing units that were arranged around a central core, focusing on shared open spaces and asymmetrical designs that irregularly joined together. One century later, the Real de los Reyes project by Miguel de la Torre mta+v introduces a new model for suburban living.Located in the Coyoacan borough, south Mexico City, this group of houses is situated within a historic colonial district, filled with museums, craft markets and recreational spaces. This multi-unit residency offers an array of multifunctional interior and exterior spaces in multiple levels, accommodating to versatile ways of living. Even through the project is situated within a vibrant communal neighborhood, the design borrows elements from the surrounding context and proposes a micro-community within a thoughtfully structured residential plan.SouthWorks by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, Ithaca, New YorkIn parallel, SouthWorks by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, an adaptive reuse speculative project of the historic Morse Chain Industrial site in Ithaca, showcases the power of mixed-use development and infrastructure. The project spans in nearly two million square feet of research, maker, fabrication, commercial, and public spaces, as well as mixed-income housing, activating the community and its economy, while celebrating its unique industrial history. It features 900 planned units of affordable, workforce, and market rate housing and provides multiple types of transportation options, thus minimizing the need for private vehicles. The project also employs passive design and is supported by on-site geothermal and photovoltaic solar generation.Sitting within a very different context, the 520-acre Downsview Framework Plan by Henning Larsen reimagines the future for the expansive North End neighborhood of Toronto and lays the foundation for a thriving community for generations to come. The project transforms the former Downsview Airport site and surrounding land into a new type of community, by employing climate-responsive design. One hundred acres of green spaces and integrated hydrological elements will become the new infrastructure of the neighborhood, which in turn is comprised of mid-rise residences and repurposed historic buildings found on site. The proposal is inspired by the 15-minute City concept, providing easy access to a network of residential, commercial, retail, institutional and industrial amenities through a short walk, roll, bike, or public transit ride.Downsview Framework Plan by Henning Larsen, Toronto, CanadaIt is not arbitrary that all three proposals are not tabula rasa projects. In the 1950s, the conditions of suburbia were vastly different, with many plots of uninhabited land being available for development without facing any sort of negative criticism. Today, however, architects are preaching about mindful construction and the importance of adaptive reuse, urging developers to take advantage of existing building fabrics in the outskirts of cities. Additionally, the traditional suburbia model has also proved quite unsuccessful, prompting an urgent need for innovative, community-driven alternatives.Frankly, reversing suburbia does not necessarily mean erasing it but rather rethinking its purpose, structure and potential. As cities continue to expand, the challenge lies in transforming suburban landscapes into vibrant, sustainable and inclusive environments. By embracing adaptive reuse, mixed-use developments, and organic infrastructure suburbs can evolve from isolated residential zones into dynamic, self-sufficient communities. These three projects demonstrate that the future of suburbia is not about abandonment, but reinvention where connectivity replaces isolation, density enhances livability, and sustainability drives growth. If urban sprawl is to be addressed effectively, then suburbia must no longer be a relic of the past but a model for the future.Architects: Want to have your project featured?
