  • Shenmue is the most influential game of all time, according to new poll
    www.polygon.com
A public poll to determine the most influential video game of all time, held by the U.K. screen arts academy BAFTA, has returned an extremely surprising (if not totally unworthy) result: Shenmue, Yu Suzukis wildly ambitious 1999 Sega Dreamcast game about one young mans search for justice (and capsule toys).Shenmue beat more routinely canonized classics like Doom, Super Mario Bros., Half-Life, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time to claim the title. Those four games made up the rest of the top five. Minecraft came in sixth place, Tetris in 11th, Final Fantasy 7 in 17th, and Grand Theft Auto 3 placed a lowly 19th.Theres evidence that BAFTAs poll was subject to some brigading among passionate game fans; Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, a (by all accounts very good) role-playing game that has barely been out for two months, came in 7th place, just ahead of Super Mario 64. Still, theres no disputing the worthiness of most of the games in BAFTAs top 21, even if the order is a little idiosyncratic.Shenmue was a passion project for the Sega producer Suzuki, the creator of Out Run and Virtua Fighter. The most expensive game ever made at the time, its a boldly realistic take on the humdrum daily life of Ryo Hazuki, a teenage martial artist out to avenge his fathers murder in the 1980s. It features incredibly detailed environments, a day-and-night system, NPCs who obey their own schedules, dozens of minigames and quite a lot of just waiting around.Shenmue was certainly ahead of its time, although its debatable how influential it has been on other games certainly in comparison to something like GTA 3. Conceived as a multi-part epic, it was a commercial failure, and though Shenmue 2 came out in 2001, it would be 18 years before Suzuki got to continue his story in the crowd-funded Shenmue 3.Responding to the accolade in a statement, Suzuki said, I am deeply honoured and grateful that Shenmue has been selected as the Most Influential Video Game of All Time. At its inception, we set out to explore the question, How real can a game become?, aiming to portray a world and story unprecedented in scale and detail. This distinction serves as a powerful reminder that the challenge we embraced continues to resonate with and inspire so many people even today. It is truly the greatest of encouragement.Above all, we would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the fans around the world who have continued to love and support Shenmue. Your passion and encouragement have guided this journey every step of the way. And the story is not over yet, there is more to come! Thank you very much!BAFTAs poll was conducted as a prelude to the BAFTA Games Awards, which take place next week on April 8. In a similar poll last year, the public selected Tomb Raiders Lara Croft as the most iconic video games character of all time, ahead of Mario, Sonic, and Hitmans Agent 47.Heres the full ranking of the top 21 most influential video games of all time, according to BAFTAs poll:ShenmueDoom (1993)Super Mario Bros.Half-LifeThe Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of TimeMinecraftKingdom Come: Deliverance 2Super Mario 64Half-Life 2The SimsTetrisTomb RaiderPongMetal Gear SolidWorld of WarcraftBaldurs Gate 3Final Fantasy 7Dark SoulsGrand Theft Auto 3The Elder Scrolls 5: SkyrimGrand Theft AutoSee More:

  • All the new video games launching in 2025
    www.polygon.com
After a brutal year for the video game industry, 2025 is looking brighter and much busier if only because Rockstar Games plans to release Grand Theft Auto 6 in 2025, and Nintendo promises to deliver the Switch 2 and a bunch of new games to launch with it.Those arent the only highly anticipated sequels coming in 2025. Video game fans can also expect Ghost of Yotei, Elden Ring Nightreign, Death Stranding 2, Doom: The Dark Ages, Borderlands 4, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Monster Hunter Wilds, Pokmon Legends: Z-A, and Slay the Spire 2. Beyond sequels, there are some other big bets on the calendar for 2025, like Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, Judas, Riots fighting game 2XKO, and South of Midnight. Suffice it to say, its currently looking like a big year for new video game releases.Game release dates are always in flux, though, so Polygons guide to the new video games coming in 2025 will be • Nintendo Switch 2 Will Be a Smash Hit, Says Analyst; High Retail Prices Are Meant to Drive Digital Sales
    wccftech.com
It's time for the first analyst reactions to the Nintendo Switch 2 announcements, starting with the higher-than-expected pricing for both the console itself and its games. According to MIDiA Research's Rhys Elliott, whom we often interviewed exclusively on Wccftech, the console is poised to become a smash hit even at the $450 price. The Nintendo Switch 2 is slightly more expensive than many of us analysts thought, but $450 is still within the $400-500 price range I expected. While I still reckon $400 is the sweet spot, and we'll see a cheaper SKU eventually, $450 is still affordable and in line with other consoles and the Steam Deck.Unlike other manufacturers, Nintendo relies almost solely on its console and console software business, so loss-leading pricing simply wasnt in the cards. At $450, the Switch 2 is still cheap enough for mass-market adoption, and given the stacked and diverse software lineup, I believe it will sell well among core gamers, casuals, families, and more.Perhaps an even tougher pill to swallow for consumers is the increase in Nintendo Switch 2 game prices, chiefly Mario Kart World, which will cost $80 (90 in Europe) if you buy a physical copy. According to Elliott, the rationale is mainly to drive users to purchase digital instead, since Nintendo's split is currently around fifty-fifty (whereas the other consoles made by Microsoft and Sony already skew much more toward digital sales). While the orange mans tariffs and Nintendo wanting to increase ARPPU factor into the reasoning behind Nintendo charging $80 for Mario Kart World, I think theres more at play. Nintendo also wants to nudge consumers to buy games digitally. The lower prices for digital games versus boxed (true for Donkey Kong and Mario Kart) point to this. Another factor is last weeks announcement of the Digital Game Card, which lets players lend games to their Switch Online Family Plan members.A little bit of context here: PlayStation and Xbox have already pushed their platforms to become digital-first, driven by strategies like multi-game subscriptions, digital-only consoles, free-to-plays rise, and platform holders pushing consumers to digital versions via perks (like extra cosmetics and the ability to pre-load a game so its instantly ready to play at launch). So PlayStation and especially Xbox are very digital-first. But Nintendo is different, more 50-50. For consumers, a unique value proposition of physical games is the preowned and rental markets. But Nintendos reliance on physical impacts its bottom line, hence the nudging. Nintendo does not gain revenues from physical renting and resales. After all, a copy of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe could be sold on the reseller market 100 times or rented 100 times, but Nintendo would only capture revenues from that first sale. A digital-only market means more revenue and price control for Nintendo. Long story short, Nintendos use of framing (sticker shock for physical) is actually pushing people to digital, which benefits Nintendo. Are you planning to pre-order a Nintendo Switch 2 when pre-orders open on April 9? • Want The Latest-Generation Gaming PC Hardware At A Not So Outrageous Price? The Andromeda Insights Galaxy Gaming PC Offers An RX 9070 XT & Ryzen 7 9800X3D For $2,099.99 On Amazon

MenuHomeNewsHardwareGamingMobileFinanceDealsReviewsHow ToWccftechDealsWant The Latest-Generation Gaming PC Hardware At A Not So Outrageous Price? The Andromeda Insights Galaxy Gaming PC Offers An RX 9070 XT & Ryzen 7 9800X3D For $2,099.99 On AmazonOmar Sohail Apr 3, 2025 at 06:35am EDTThe price of AMDs Ryzen 7 9800X3D has stabilized a few months after it launched, and it will not be difficult for you to get a hold of a unit for $479.99 on Amazon. Unfortunately, the Radeon RX 9070 XT graphics card is another story, but that is the case with every new release of GPUs, as these are never available at their MSRP. Even if you search the online retailer at this time, the most affordable variant you can get at this time is the XFX Mercury AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT, which is available for $959.99, and that too, if you become a Prime member. If you do not want to jump around these incessant loopholes, the best way to overcome these problems is to purchase a gaming PC. Now, a couple of years ago, we would have been strongly against this suggestion, as it would have been far more affordable to build this machine with parts that were purchased separately, but we are living in different times where GPUs will almost always be sold at outrageous prices. Fortunately, the Andromeda Insights Galaxy gaming PC does not have to give you those headaches because at $2,099.99 on Amazon, it is not a cheap purchase, but it does not go insanely overboard either. For this price, you not only get a combination of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D but you can also drive the Radeon RX 9070 XT daily, which sports a whopping 16GB of GDDR6 VRAM. Complementing the rest of the specifications are 32GB of DDR5 RAM operating at 6,000MHz, a 2TB PCIe NVMe Gen 4 SSD, a B650 motherboard that supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and an 850W power supply. The operating system is Windows 11 Home, and for after-sales support, Andromeda Insights states that buyers will receive a lifetime labor warranty and a lifetime service warranty. However, it is important that you read the finer details.Do keep in mind that computer hardware is not quite as affordable as it was a few years ago, so you need to have realistic expectations of your budget if you want to immerse yourself in fluid, high-resolution gaming sessions. A budget of $2,099.99 is not something that the everyday consumer can entertain, but it still provides some middle ground considering the other options you have at this time.Get the Andromeda Insights Galaxy gaming PC from Amazon- $2,099.99Get the Ryzen 7 9800X3D from Amazon- $479.99Explore AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT GPU options hereSee what else Amazon has discounted todayDeal of the DaySubscribe to get an everyday digest of the latest technology news in your inboxFollow us onTopicsSectionsCompanySome posts on wccftech.com may contain affiliate links. • Witch Watch is the funniest anime Ive seen all year
    www.polygon.com
In the very first episode of Witch Watch, witch in training Nico desperately wants to impress her new roommate (and childhood crush!!!!!!!!) Morihito, after breaking his window and his favorite mug. So, she decides to show off one of her more complicated spells on herself, of course, so she doesnt break any more of his items. In a flash, shes now flattened like a paper doll. But before Morihito can fully react to her magical prowess, a wind catches her and she floats off into the street. Cue a zany chase through the streets as Morihito runs after her.Unfortunately for Nico, this is the first of many shenanigans that speak perfectly to what makes Witch Watch such a fun watch (at her own expense).Witch Watch has an incredibly enticing pitch for anyone who loves magical hijinks and romantic tropes: Nico must move in with her childhood friend Morihito, a humanlike ogre who shes had a crush on since they were kids. She thinks shes just here to finish her witch training (and the fact she gets to live with her crush is simply a huge bonus). Meanwhile, Morihitos father told him the real reason shes here is because Morihito must protect her from an impending prophecy that could spell her doom.Already, the contrast between their motivations is hilarious. She gleefully proclaims that shes here to start her romantic adventures; hes determined to keep her out of harms way, no matter what. It doesnt help that Nico is also eager to show off her magic, since being a good witch means using magic to help others even as Morihito, however, advises her not to attract any attention.Even without the magical hijinks, they already have beautifully clashing personalities that lend to some great romantic tension. Nico is bubbly, impulsive, and seems to speak with the emoji after every sentence. Shes constantly trying to impress Morihito, be it with her magical talents or her appearance. But Morihito is Very Serious, dedicated to his greater mission. He has some quirks, though, like a fixation on brewing his coffee just right and a penchant for vintage clothing. But what really elevates the show from charming to hilarious is how effectively the magic is used for laughs. The physical gags in Witch Watch are so perfectly timed and executed, so even when I expect them, I burst out laughing. I knew that paper doll Nico gag from the trailer, but the exact delivery was just so rapid-fire and zany that even if I kinda knew what was coming, it still got me howling. The nature of Nicos spellcasting means shell announce what effects the spells will have before she uses them; still, knowing what theyre supposed to do did not prepare me for the sheer ridiculousness of seeing them in action. Witch Watch plays with those expectations, indulging them into the most absurd outcome or completely subverting what we think will happen. The first three episodes are chock-full of magically induced physical humor, which only gets funnier the more people get pulled into Nico and Morihitos circle. We dont see a lot of the other characters just yet, but theres a whole classroom of quirky students (and one secret otaku teacher) that well probably get to know along with some other magical characters from Nicos past.Witch Watch is full of classic tropes childhood friends! Roommates! Grumpy and sunshine! which already spells a fun time for anyone looking for a cute romantic comedy. But its the cartoonishly bonkers physical humor that makes it so memorable. Considering just how much the first three episodes alone made me laugh, I cant wait to see where the show goes as the scope of the world expands. Even without the ominous threat chasing after Nico, shes sure to get herself into a whole hodgepodge of magical shenanigans just to impress her crush. And honestly? I get it.Witch Watch kicks off on April 6, streaming on Netflix, Hulu, and Crunchyroll, with the English dub coming April 27.
