As President Trump pushes his massive global tariffs into effect, Americas former trading partners are designing their own, retaliatory tariffs, that are sure to have a walloping effect on Americans pocketbooks. On Thursday, the recently elected prime minister of Canada, Mark Carney, announced a new 25 percent tariff on American-made automobiles. The tariffs will apply to all vehicles that do not comply with the USMCA, the trade agreement between Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. that was signed into law several years ago. However, the tariffs dont apply to car parts. Carney said he thought Canada would earn approximately $5.7 billion from the new measures. The U.S. has already levied multiple tariffs against Canada, including on the nations steel and aluminum, and on Canadian exports. Canada and Mexico were exempted from the far-reaching tariffs that Trump announced this week (dubbed reciprocal tariffs) which were aimed at dozens of countries all over the worldthough the previous measures remain. Our response to these latest tariffs is to fight, to protect, and to build, Carney said, during a press conference. We will fight the U.S. tariffs with retaliatory trade actions of our own that will have maximum impact in the United States and minimum impacts here in Canada. We take these measures reluctantly, Mr. Carney told reporters. He went on: We can do better than the United States. Exactly where that comes out depends on how much damage they do to their economy. Carney took the opportunity to point out that Trump was effectively violating the trade agreement that his own administration had negotiated during his first term in office. Indeed, the USMCA was put into place in 2020, towards the end of Trumps first tenure at the White House. Carney also pointed out that Trumps trade war would ultimately hurt many Americans and that he, therefore, believed the tariffs would be rescinded eventually. Given the prospective damage to their own people, the American administration should eventually change course, Carney said. Although their policy will hurt American families until that pain becomes impossible to ignore, I do not believe they will change direction, so the road to that point may indeed be long. And will be hard on Canadians just as it will be on other partners of the United States.Carney also spoke pessimistically about U.S.-Canadian relations: The global economy is fundamentally different today than it was yesterday. The system of global trade anchored on the United States is over. Our old relationship of steadily deepening integration with the United States is over. The 80-year period when the United States embraced the mantle of economic leadershipis over. This is a tragedy, he added. It is also the new reality. We must respond with both purpose and force.

Much of the residential neighborhoods are made up of a mixed-use fabric, where the predominant constructions from several decades ago are the so-called "casa chorizo" and horizontally owned houses, commonly known as PH (Propiedad Horizontal). It is interesting to review how, over the years, these constructions have been modified due to changes in building regulations, which allowed the creation of new typologies, mainly responding to new ways of living within the city. The renovation of these constructions, many of which are used for residential purposes, has also been a conscious response to avoid overbuilding in an already densely populated city. While these projects have been a recurring practice in Buenos Aires for several years now, many young architects of new generations are taking on these challenges, thus generating a trend that seems to have no end and where we find new solutions in each renovation.To improve the habitability of these existing constructions, various resources have been employed to optimize spatial amplitude, improve the entry of light and natural ventilation, integrate vegetation or green spaces, and add or unify areas according to new needs. A predominant premise in this type of work is the preservation and enhancement of the existing architectural heritage, thereby maintaining the historical identity of the houses individually as well as being an integral part of a very characteristic urban context.We see how strategies such as the demolition of interior walls to connect spaces have been implemented, always respecting and valuing the original structures to make use of the constructive elements and highlight the dialogue between the past and the contemporary. Additionally, the introduction of lightweight and dry constructions, such as metal structures for mezzanines, enclosure systems, facades, and articulating elements in interiors, are practical and interesting solutions that once again fuse the old with the new. The restoration of original floors, vaulted ceilings, and brick walls also promotes a conscious architecture both economically and sustainably. Moreover, the adaptation of these homes has led to the design of smaller-scale furniture and custom elements that meet specific needs and provide a highly interesting spatial quality.
