Mysterious Jawbone Found at an Antique Shop in Taiwan Belonged to a Male Denisovan, Scientists Say
Mysterious Jawbone Found at an Antique Shop in Taiwan Belonged to a Male Denisovan, Scientists Say The fossil, called Penghu 1, is one of the few known pieces of physical evidence from the Denisovans, extinct relatives of modern humans. It suggests the species lived in diverse environments Researchers extracted ancient proteins from the bone and tooth enamel. Chun-Hsiang Chang, Jay Chang Fossil collector Kun-Yu Tsai was perusing antiques in 2008 when an unusual-looking jawbone caught his eye. Intrigued by the object, he purchased it and ultimately donated it to the National Museum of Natural Science in Taiwan. For years, the fossilized jawbone has perplexed researchers. It’s similar to the mandibles of modern humans, but it’s thicker and has bigger teeth—it’s also missing the prominent chin that humans have today. As a result, scientists suspected it belonged to a human ancestor, but they didn’t know which one—until now. The jawbone belonged to a Denisovan, an extinct hominin species first described in 2010, scientists report this week in the journal Science. The discovery suggests Denisovans were adaptable to a variety of environments and climates, from chilly, high-elevation places like Siberia and the Tibetan Plateau to warm, humid locales like Taiwan. Scientists have been trying to solve the mystery of the lower jawbone, known as Penghu 1, for more than a decade. Before ending up at the antique shop in southern Taiwan, it had been dredged up from the Penghu Channel by commercial fishermen. Over time, the bone had taken on a muddy, dark brown hue, while the five still-attached teeth had turned black. At first, researchers tried to extract DNA from the mandible. But because of Taiwan’s warm, muggy climate, which degrades ancient DNA, these attempts were unsuccessful. Undeterred, they decided to try another method: investigating ancient proteins embedded in the fossil’s bone and tooth enamel. Proteins often outlast DNA in fossils, and they can serve as unique signatures for a species. The jawbone belonged to a male Denisovan, an extinct relative of modern humans. Cheng-Han Sun This “paleoproteomic” technique worked. Researchers discovered two protein variants found only in other Denisovan fossils—a smoking gun for identifying which species Penghu 1 had come from. “[The variants] don’t exist in the Neanderthals,” says Bastien Llamas, a geneticist at the University of Adelaide in Australia who was not involved with the research, to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s Anna Salleh. “They don’t exist in humans. They’ve only been detected so far in Denisovans.” They found another protein that’s coded for on the Y chromosome, which revealed the jawbone belonged to a male. Researchers still don’t know when the Denisovan lived, however. They’ve tried numerous ways to come up with a date range for the fossil, including radiocarbon and uranium-series dating. But because of the bone’s condition, they have only been able to narrow down the timeline to two wide potential periods: either between 10,000 to 70,000 years ago or 130,000 to 190,000 years ago. These time frames are associated with lower sea levels, which would have put the fossil discovery site above water, according to Science’s Michael Price. Now that the jawbone has been confirmed as belonging to a Denisovan, it joins the very small ranks of known Denisovan fossils. Only a handful of bones and teeth have been unearthed since scientists first identified the species 15 years ago, so “every piece that is informative changes our picture” of the Denisovans, says study co-author Frido Welker, a molecular anthropologist at the University of Copenhagen, to Scientific American’s Cody Cottier. Meanwhile, scientists are still piecing together how Denisovans fit into the human family tree. Their DNA has been found in modern humans, which points to interbreeding between Denisovans and Homo sapiens. But when and where did the two species overlap? The lack of Denisovan fossils makes these questions even harder to answer, but findings like Penghu 1 “help expand our understanding of where those interactions might have taken place,” says Kelsey Witt, a geneticist at Clemson University who was not involved with the research, to Science. Big Tech cozied up to Trump — it’s not getting much in return
For a while, it looked like President Donald Trump was going to have Big Tech’s back. Now, the tech industry is collateral damage in his global trade war.On Thursday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen floated the idea of placing “a levy on the advertising revenues of digital services” if tariff negotiations with the US go south. This would be the opposite outcome that tech CEOs like Mark Zuckerberg were hoping for when they threw their support behind the new administration. To someone like Zuckerberg, Trump was supposed to be the strong-armed leader to bring the overbearing EU to heel. Instead, the rhetoric between the US and EU is ratcheting up just weeks before the EU is already set to fine Meta (and Apple) for violating its Digital Markets Act. While certainly more of a self-inflicted wound, Elon Musk’s popularity in the US has “inverted as his support for President Trump has increased,” Nate Silver wrote this week. Tesla’s stock price, meanwhile. has lost over a third of its value this year, and, thanks to tariffs, the company has removed the option to buy new, US-made vehicles in China. As I predicted last week, TikTok is particularly screwed by Trump’s extra-aggressive China tariffs, which the country has promised to “fight to the end.” Even as it’s still business as usual for TikTok’s rank and file, the app’s fate in the US feels increasingly precarious. When asked this week about the extended deadline to reach a TikTok deal in the US, a spokesperson for China’s commerce ministry said the government “opposes practices that ignore the laws of the market economy, plunder by force, and damage the legitimate rights and interests of enterprises.” “There’s not going to be much dialogue until that’s resolved,” one of TikTok’s aspiring bidders, AppLovin CEO Adam Foroughi, said this week of the tariffs. The situation is such a mess that the US stock market tanking also “drowned out the ability to infer feedback” from shareholders about AppLovin’s bid, Foroughi told Bloomberg. If anything, this week is a reminder that the tech industry has grown so large and influential that its leading companies are tools for leverage between countries. In times of relative peace, that influence can be beneficial for Big Tech. When things get hostile, Big Tech is put in the crosshairs.ElsewhereMore knives out for OpenAI: While OpenAI’s counter-suit against Elon Musk was expected, I took note of the growing coalition (which includes ex-OpenAI employees) pushing this week to block OpenAI’s switch from a non-profit. Has OpenAI abused its legal status as a charity? Almost certainly. Is enough money and momentum at stake for it not to matter? Probably. But I’m still expecting this detaching from the governing non-profit to be messier than most expect. Google’s layoff confusion: While layoffs have been expected in Google’s Platform and Devices division for a while, some employees were surprised at the terms of the cuts when they finally arrived this week. The hundreds of people impacted get 60 days of garden leave and then 14 weeks of severance, plus one additional week per year served. Strangely, that’s more paid time than was given to the people in the same organization who took voluntary layoffs in January. More headlines: AI models are letting down their guard… ByteDance reportedly made $39 billion from TikTok last year, a 63-percent increase and about 25 percent of its total revenue… Waymo is coming to Market Street in downtown San Francisco… Google employees are now free to talk about the company’s monopoly case against the Department of Justice… Microsoft fired two employees for protesting during its 50th anniversary event… and after denying the reports for weeks, the company finally confirmed that it’s “slowing or pausing some early-stage” data center projects.Job boardSome noteworthy job changes in the tech world:Guillaume Princen is joining Anthropic to lead its EMEA business. Clete Willems is Netflix’s new head of global policy.Mira Murati nabbed Alec Radford and Bob McGrew as advisors for her new AI lab.Dina Powell McCormick and Stripe CEO Patrick Collison joined the board of Meta.Hugo Barra joined the board of Sonos.More linksFrom CEO Andy Jassy’s annual letter to Amazon shareholders (and apparently Nvidia): “AI does not have to be as expensive as it is today, and it won’t be in the future. Chips are the biggest culprit.”The Information’s Wayne Ma interviewed Apple insiders about the leadership failure behind the company’s AI morass. My favorite details: that employees jokingly refer to the AI org as “AIMLess,” and that it took two years to remove the “hey” from the “hey Siri” voice command. A new IEA report says that power for data centers will “account for almost half of the growth in electricity demand between now and 2030.”Video of Careless People author Sarah Wynn-Williams testifying before Congress.Shopify CEO Tobi Lutke’s memo to employees about using AI at work.OpenAI leaders discuss what went into building GPT-4.5. The Pitt: Taylor Dearden and Patrick Ball Are As Anxious About Season 2 As You Are
This article contains spoilers for The Pitt season 1. In the modern era of streaming giants, it’s refreshing when fans don’t have to beg or plead with the TV gods for more television. Fans of shows like Apple’s Severance or Paramount’s Yellowstone can relate, having to wait years in between seasons (or in Yellowstone’s case, almost a year to merely get the last half of a season). Max knew it had something special with critically-acclaimed medical drama The Pitt and has already hinted that it intends the show to be a yearly experience, keeping the proverbial machine as well-oiled as any emergency room needs to be for a projected January 2026 season 2 release. For actors Taylor Dearden and Patrick Ball, that means very little rest between seasons, and not a whole lot of time to even reflect on the success of season one.  Dearden, who plays Dr. Melissa King, might have created the internet’s newest favorite neurodivergent queen. Dearden is no stranger to witnessing the establishment of iconic characters (her father is Walter White, after all) but has barely had a chance to contemplate the show or the character’s importance. When asked if she feels King will resonate with audience members the way that show lead Noah Wyle has for generations of potential doctors through his work on ER, Dearden certainly sees the possibility. But when pressed further about the comparison to Wyle, Dearden gives a sheepish half-smile and simply utters “…not at all.” Ball has a little bit of a different perspective. His parents, much like Dearden’s, undoubtedly influenced his role as the well-coiffed Dr. Frank Langdon, but not in terms of his craft. Arguably his parents could be technical advisors on the show as Ball’s mother was an ER nurse, and his father, a paramedic. So before Ball looks forward to season two, he’s often looked back at his own family history.  “All my parents’ friends are all nurses, doctors, and paramedics.” Ball says. “My mom’s Facebook activity has never been higher. It is booming. Everybody’s super excited and super supportive, and the broader healthcare community has become really engaged in having conversations around the show, which is amazing. This is a community that really needs a space to talk.” That discussion will undoubtedly continue in the months before season two debuts. And, according to Dearden, everything seems to be on schedule.  “I think the writers are doing the same thing as they did before,” she says. “They wrote all 15 episodes at once, so we, as actors, came in with everything kind of set in stone. We go to bootcamp June 1, and then we shoot after that.” As the finale wrapped, audiences were left to think about the proposed time gap between seasons. It’s yet another interesting layer to the storytelling, as audiences have no idea what to expect, or even if certain characters will return given the series’ real-time format. Some of the younger cast members might end up in a different department or a different hospital since their rotations would change. That anxious uncertainty is not simply reserved for the audience, either. The cast is most certainly feeling it, as well.  “I’m getting really antsy because I’m thinking – can you just give us a hint? How, what, when? Is it a month later?” Dearden says with a nervous energy. “I remember reading somewhere, not hearing it, but reading somewhere that our showrunner and creator Scott Gimmel said it’s not going to be the next day, and it’s not going to be a year from then. Well… that leaves every other day. We legitimately have no idea what season two is.” Which makes the offseason conversation even more interesting, especially with some of the cliffhanger endings fans were left with. Luckily for Dearden, her anxiety isn’t exacerbated as Dr. Mel is not necessarily in “cliffhanger” territory. Last we saw her, she was deciding to carbo-load with a well-deserved pizza and pasta night with her sister, Becca (Tal Anderson). The biggest offseason theory surrounding Mel is what toppings they might have got on the pizza.  Join our mailing list Get the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox! On the other side however, is Langdon. Ball was a part of one of the more explosive season 1 storylines, as Langdon was caught stealing and abusing controlled substances. That led to two of the series’ most combative scenes (which is truly saying something considering the nature of the show) between Langdon and Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch (Wyle). Robby, as the Chief Attending Physician, was tipped off to Langdon’s substance abuse, and one of the final scenes in the finale has the two facing off as to whether or not Robby is going to report Langdon’s activity. Ball’s next project, which was just announced, is a Los Angeles production of Hamlet, where Ball will play the titular tragic prince. Any astute fan of the bard will recognize that Hamlet, like so many Shakespearean protagonists, often feels he is a victim of fate, rather than taking responsibility for his own actions. That is a strangely familiar trait that Langdon shows when confronted about his substance abuse.   “Playing Hamlet has been an absolute dream for me, from the time that I decided to become an actor to whenever I realized Langdon was a dream role.” Ball says. “The fact that I’m getting to do both of these things back-to-back like this is just absolutely beyond. And I think [the two characters] do have some overlap. Langdon is much more decisive than Hamlet is, for sure. But they live in the same lineage of anxious young men – that kid who is still trying to figure out his place in the universe.” Audiences won’t know Langdon’s fate until The Pitt season 2’s likely January debut. So what does Ball think Langdon is preoccupied with during this offseason?  “I think he’s thinking about those questions of manhood. Do I have what it takes?” Most importantly, Ball is able to try and ignore those questions and is able to lean into the next project.  “I’m really thankful for Hamlet to have something to do, because I’ve been thinking about season two since the beginning of season one. And as far as what happens – Scott Gimmell and the writers know what they’re doing, and I can’t wait to see what they’re cooking up.” All 15 episodes of The Pitt season 1 are available to stream on Max now.

Apple TV+ is home to three fantastic new shows right now
Apple’s TV division is having a standout year so far. Following the conclusion of Severance, its biggest hit ever, Apple TV+ now has three excellent new shows airing that all offer something unique. #1: Your Friends & Neighbors A few years back, Apple TV+ ran a fun ad featuring “everyone but Jon Hamm.” Hamm actually starred in the video, lamenting that Apple TV+ has all the big celebrities and he’s missing out. Later that year, Hamm actually joined The Morning Show season 3. But now, Apple TV+ has premiered its own Hamm star vehicle: Your Friends & Neighbors. In what’s been described as a cross between Breaking Bad and Big Little Lies, Hamm plays a finance bro who loses everything and resorts to pawning goods stolen from his rich neighbors. Here’s Apple’s series summary: After being fired in disgrace, a hedge fund manager still grappling with his recent divorce, resorts to stealing from his neighbors’ homes in the exceedingly affluent Westmont Village, only to discover that the secrets and affairs hidden behind those wealthy facades might be more dangerous than he ever imagined. Your Friends & Neighbors’ first two episodes just premiered, and Apple has already renewed the show for a second season. #2: The Studio If high-class character drama isn’t your thing, then Apple’s new hit comedy might be. The Studio stars and was co-created by Seth Rogen, and it’s the kind of show that would have formerly made Jon Hamm especially jealous. That’s because Apple has packed a wild number of Hollywood celebrities into the series. The Studio is all about filmmaking, so each episode lends itself to cameos from the likes of Martin Scorsese, Charlize Theron, Olivia Wilde, Zac Efron, Zoë Kravitz, and a lot more. Even Netflix’s CEO gets in on the fun. Here’s the series summary: Seth Rogen stars as Matt Remick, the newly appointed head of embattled Continental Studios. As movies struggle to stay alive and relevant, Matt and his core team of infighting executives battle their insecurities as they wrangle narcissistic artists and craven corporate overlords in the ever-elusive pursuit of making great films. With their power suits masking their never-ending sense of panic, every party, set visit, casting decision, marketing meeting and award show presents them with an opportunity for glittering success or career-ending catastrophe. As someone who eats, sleeps and breathes movies, it’s the job Matt’s been pursuing his whole life, and it may very well destroy him. The Studio has four episodes currently available, with new weekly drops through May 21. #3: Dope Thief Crime thrillers have become a standout genre on Apple TV+, and the latest such release is a strong one. Dope Thief stars Brian Tyree Henry and Wagner Moura and is executive produced by Ridley Scott, who also directed the first episode. With a compelling, action-fueled story that doesn’t get too dark thanks to well-timed comic moments, Dope Thief offers a third distinct, enticing new show on Apple TV+. Here’s Apple’s summary of the series: Based on Dennis Tafoya’s book of the same name, the series follows longtime Philly friends and delinquents who pose as DEA agents to rob an unknown house in the countryside, only to have their small-time grift become a life-and-death enterprise, as they unwittingly reveal and unravel the biggest hidden narcotics corridor on the Eastern Seaboard. Dope Thief has six episodes available now, with weekly releases continuing through April 25. New Apple TV+ shows: wrap-up The strength of Apple’s current TV+ lineup would have seemed like a fluke just a year or two ago, when the streamer’s hit rate wasn’t quite as high. But over the past nine months or so, Apple TV+ has truly been on a hot streak that’s not yet let up. I never thought I’d say this, but: who needs Severance? Apple TV+ is currently available for just *$2.99* per month with a limited-time special. Tesla Shows Off Cheaper and Slower Cybertruck That's an Even Worse Deal
Nerfed.Bargain BasementTesla has introduced a cheaper, entry-level Cybertruck — and by all accounts, it's still not looking like a great deal. The new Long Range Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) was announced by the EV maker on CEO Elon Musk's X-formerly-Twitter on Thursday evening. But at $69,990 — eye roll, please — before a $7,500 federal tax credit, it's still a considerably expensive option compared to the steep competition in the space. That makes it $10,000 cheaper than the Long Range All Wheel Drive trim, but that "long range" in its name? Turns out it only ekes out an additional 25 miles of range as a result, from 350 to 325 miles. And that's not to mention the truck's rapid depreciation, making it a highly questionable investment. As Electrek reported earlier this week, the company is sitting on almost 2,400 unsold Cybertrucks, worth roughly $200 million, and is no longer accepting them as trade-ins.Oh, and did we mention the truck's eight recalls? The Cybertruck has also quickly become a huge target of protestors furious with Musk's embrace of far-right extremism and dismantling of federal agencies, making the "swasticar" an even tougher sell to consumers.Cyber CompromiseBuyers also would have to contend with several other compromises if they were to buy the latest trim, including a lower 7,500-pound towing capacity, and a significantly slower 6.2-second 0-60 mph time, as Teslarati points out.The new trim also sacrifices synthetic leather seats in favor of textile seats, no second-row display, an inferior audio system, and no power outlets in the bed. It also has an adaptive coil spring suspension instead of the well-reviewed adaptive air suspension in the upper trims, which also means that it doesn't have adjustable ride height. In short, there's a chance the latest trim could struggle to boost already waning demand.According to the latest numbers, Tesla only sold 6,406 Cybertrucks in the first quarter of this year, a massive drop from the 12,991 it sold in Q4 of last year.More on the Cybertruck: Official Cybertruck Account Explodes in FuryShare This Article
