Microsoft’s Xbox app is now available on LG smart TVs
Microsoft revealed earlier this year that LG TVs would get access to Xbox Cloud Gaming, and now the Xbox TV app is rolling out to select LG smart TV models starting today. The Xbox app will let LG TV owners stream Xbox games directly to their TVs, and use a wireless controller to play them. The Xbox app will be available for LG’s 2022 OLED TVs, select 2023 smart TVs, and newer models and smart monitors that are running webOS24 or higher. It will also soon be available for LG’s portable StanbyME screens. The Xbox app is built into the LG gaming portal on the latest 2025 LG TVs, but for older models you’ll have to head into the LG app store and download the Xbox app. LG’s 2022 OLED TVs and select 2023 smart TVs will also need the latest firmware upgrade to run the Xbox app, and you’ll have to connect a Bluetooth-enabled controller and subscribe to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate to stream Xbox games to your TV. Microsoft first launched its Xbox TV app on Samsung’s range of smart TVs in 2022, before expanding it to older models a year later. The app looks very similar to the web version of Xbox Cloud Gaming, and aims to provide a console-like experience without the need to purchase an Xbox Series S / X device. The Xbox TV app is a big part of Microsoft’s strategy to expand Xbox to multiple devices and make it clear that it thinks every screen is an Xbox now.

Elon Musk’s robotaxi fantasy is starting to unravel
Last night, Elon Musk did what he does best: promise “millions” of autonomous Tesla vehicles would be on the road by the end of next year. It’s become a familiar refrain. Every year since at least 2020, Musk has promised Tesla vehicles will finally achieve their full self-driving capabilities. And every year, those promises fail to come to fruition. Tesla has come under investigation for numerous fatalities involving its vehicles and its driver assist features, Autopilot and Full Self-Driving. His rivals continue to outpace him. And Musk has even acknowledged his overly optimistic outlook by labeling himself “the boy who cried FSD.”“I predict that there will be millions of Teslas operating autonomously, fully autonomously, in the second half of next year.”That fantasy of millions of autonomous Tesla vehicles is getting closer to reality, Musk promised again last night. You’ll be able to sleep in your car and wake up at your destination by the end of this year, he vowed. As Tesla’s financial problems mount, the billionaire CEO seems eager to shift focus away from the drab realities of running a car company amid a tumultuous global trade war, and toward a more idealized vision of a future-focused company producing millions of robots, both humanoid and car.But that fantasy is looking increasingly out of reach, especially as Musk confronts the limitations of Tesla’s technology, and the current political reality he helped usher in.During the call, it was clear that Musk is intent on continuing to pursue the goal of deploying fully autonomous vehicles using a camera-only sensor suite and an end-to-end neural network that’s been trained on billions of driving miles from the company’s fleet.Tesla doesn’t have a PR department and stopped responding to questions from reporters almost six years ago. So often Musk’s claims about full self-driving go completely unchallenged, and rarely is he asked to defend his positions. Since his acquisition of Twitter, and its rebranding as X, Musk has been able to count on his legion of fans to amplify his promises about autonomous cars to the broader world, with little pushback.Tesla’s earnings calls remain the last place where Musk fields questions about the company’s technology — and often those questions are packaged with a lot of fawning and ingratiating remarks from financial analysts who have developed parasocial relationships with the billionaire CEO over the past decade. But last night, Musk faced several pointed queries about Tesla’s plans to roll out driverless cars in Austin in just a few short months, as investors continue to struggle to parse reality from fiction. As Tesla’s financial problems mount, the billionaire CEO seems eager to shift focus away from the drab realities of running a car company.Last year, Musk said that Tesla would rollout “unsupervised” robotaxis in Austin, Texas starting in June 2025. And in the call last night, Musk stuck to that deadline, but added a little more color about what to expect. He said the paid ridehailing service would consist of 10-20 Model Y vehicles with remote operators in case any of the cars get stuck. So unsupervised, but also teleoperated in case of emergency.Tesla’s robotaxis will have “audio input” to listen for approaching emergency vehicles — well, at least some of them will, according to Ashok Elluswamy, VP of Autopilot and AI software. “The customer facing versions don’t have audio input, but the version that’s going to be in Austin will have audio input,” he said.Musk has long promised Level 5 autonomy, which describes driverless vehicles that can travel anywhere, under any conditions, without limitations. But last night, he corrected himself: there will be some limitations. A “blizzard in Manhattan,” for example, may be off limits for Tesla’s self-driving taxis. In other words, geofencing, a practice used by every other operator of autonomous vehicles, but typically shunned by Musk because it conflicts with his vision of an unfettered, decentralized fleet of driverless cars free to roam anywhere they want.“It’s increasingly obvious that there’s some value to having a localized set of parameters for different regions and localities,” Musk said. One analyst asked about the reliability of Tesla’s cameras when confronting sun glare, fog, or dust. Musk claimed that the company’s vision system bypasses image processing and instead uses direct photon counting to account for “noise” like glare or dust.Other robotaxi operators have determined that cameras aren’t enough to reliably guide a driverless car through a complex environment. Companies like Waymo, which currently is doing 200,000 fully autonomous taxi trips each week, rely on a sensor suite that includes lidar, radar, and ultrasonic sensors for redundancy in case the vehicle runs into any difficulty. Musk calls lidar “a crutch.”During the call, Musk mocked Waymo’s approach as costing “way more money” than his company. Tesla builds its own cars, its own computers, and its own sensors. It’s more vertically integrated, which Musk argues give it the “leg up” over its rivals. Of course, he made no mention of the major hardware replacement that millions of Tesla vehicles will require in order to achieve their promise of full self-driving — a process he previously described as “painful” and expensive.“It’s increasingly obvious that there’s some value to having a localized set of parameters for different regions and localities.”“Teslas are… probably costing a quarter or 20 percent of what a Waymo costs and made in very high volume,” Musk said. “So, you know, ironically, we’re the ones that made the bet that a pure AI solution with cameras… is the right move.”Hurdles remain, Musk admitted. Tesla will have “10 million autonomous cars” on the road in a few years, unless “we’re blocked by regulatory situations.” What sort of regulatory situations, he didn’t enumerate. Right now, there’s nothing standing in Tesla’s way from deploying dozens or even hundreds of driverless cars if it chooses. The Trump administration, led by Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, have slashed thousands of jobs, including roles in regulatory agencies investigating the safety of Tesla’s self-driving systems.Tariffs and the rising trade war could be a sticking point. Tesla’s Cybercab production could be disrupted after the company reportedly paused component imports from China thanks to President Trump’s 145 percent tariff on the county.Waymo’s fully driverless cars are currently operating in four cities, including Austin, with more on the way. Tesla has yet to demonstrate its cars can operate autonomously on public roads, preferring to stick to controlled demonstrations on closed lots or private roads. But the real proof is right around the corner — if you continue to believe in Elon Musk’s promises.See More:

Yes, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered Still Has All the Bugs, Glitches, and Memes Fans Know and Love From 20 Years Ago
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has only been out for 24 hours, but already players are enjoying its nostalgia-fueled gameplay — bugs and all.Every veteran Bethesda fan knows the studio’s games come with a generous dollop of jank. Oblivion, which first launched in 2006, was one of the chief culprits, with objects flying all over the place, characters making poorly-timed (but often hilarious) on-screen interjections, and things happening in the background that, in the context of what was going on in the foreground, were perfect meme material.PlayNearly 20 years later, and Bethesda’s remaster (not a remake, it’s insisted), has all the “charm,” of the original, as Todd Howard put it. And that’s not an issue. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.“Oblivion is back,” is what players of the remaster are saying in response to clips of the game going wrong in some way, or doing that Bethesda game thing of having a random NPC's face steal the scene.Rawr byu/Kryptnyt inoblivionEven glitches players exploited in the original Oblivion have been found to work in the remaster. And players are recreating Oblivion memes, trying to recapture the hilarity of the game’s NPC behavior as it was all those years ago.None of Oblivion Remastered’s jank is seriously affecting player enjoyment of the game. For some it offers a warm familiarity. Can you imagine if the game had stripped all this out? It would feel… soulless, somehow, and nothing like the original fans fondly remember. Perhaps such attention on polish is best reserved for The Elder Scrolls VI.Bugs, glitches, and memes are just one aspect of Oblivion Remastered’s success, which has seen players use the character creator to come up with some hilarious and nightmarish faces. There are also already loads of mods available, despite Oblivion Remastered not officially supporting them. And it really does look like Oblivion Remastered is a hit. On Steam it enjoyed an impressive peak concurrent player count of over 180,000 on release day — a figure that’s set to increase as the game heads into its first weekend on sale. We've got a comprehensive guide to everything you'll find in Oblivion Remastered, including an expansive Interactive Map, complete Walkthroughs for the Main Questline and every Guild Quest, How to Build the Perfect Character, Things to Do First, and much more.Wesley is the UK News Editor for IGN. Captain America 4’s Carl Lumbly Discusses His Complicated Superhero History
Early in Captain America: Brave New World, Sam Wilson takes his pal Joaquin Torres to get some training. At first Joaquin scoffs at the trainer chosen by Sam, a physically imposing, but decidedly older man. But when Sam tells Joaquin the trainer’s name, Joaquin is overcome with awe. After all, the man is Isaiah Bradley, the lost Captain America, who gained powers when the Super-Soldier serum was forced upon him. As we learned in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Isaiah went on several missions for the U.S. government in the 1950s, only to be captured by Hydra and disavowed by the military, left to rot in prison. When Sam took on the mantle of Captain America from Steve Rogers, he made it his mission to get Isaiah the respect he deserves, as the great, lost Captain America. Does that respect mean that we’ll see Isaiah finally suited up, joining the Avengers in a Captain America costume? Isaiah’s actor Carl Lumbly isn’t too sure. “I’m not sure if you remember M.A.N.T.I.S.,” Lumbly responds when Den of Geek asks about his hopes to play in-costume Captain America in an upcoming Avengers film. “That was my first experience with spandex. And I can say I’ve been happy to live without spandex.” Lumbly starred as Dr. Miles Hawkins in M.A.N.T.I.S., a superhero series created by none other than Sam Raimi and Batman (1989) screenwriter Sam Hamm, which ran for one season on the Fox Network in 1994-1995. In his masked persona, Hawkins wore armor as much he did spandex, but that was enough for Lumbly. “The materials now are probably more forgiving, but no,” he laughs. To be sure, Lumbly has earned the right to pass on putting on a costume. He is a bonafide legend in the world of genre fiction. His credits include playing John Parker in The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension, voicing the Martian Manhunter in Justice League Unlimited, and appearing as C. Auguste Dupin in Mike Flanagan‘s The Fall of the House of Usher. Although his superhero bonafides cannot be disputed now, Lumbly admits he was slow to the genre. “I was not allowed to read comic books when I was young,” he says. “I was told that they were not acceptable forms of literature and I love reading and I love books. So when I came to comic books to do J’onn J’onzz the Martial Manhunter in the DC world, I became aware of the depth of these stories that I that dismissed as romps.” “These characters are saying things to one another inside these stories that you probably couldn’t get away with in some of the other literature that I was more familiar with, because people would say it’s so didactic or on the nose. But the fact that comic book stories all start with an image without words gives them a power that allows the words to reach even further. “It hits people in the spot before they realize the shot’s been fired.” It’s that power to slip hard truths past resisting audiences that drew Lumbly to the MCU in the first place. Lumbly describes Isaiah Bradley as “a witness” and wanted to play the character because of the “story that he told about himself as a young man, going through what he went through during the war and his perspectives on where things are now.” “I just felt that it was a beautifully written, shared life experience, and I wanted to take a shot at it. And I took that shot. It was very affecting for me,” he says. “I felt very close to what he was saying, not my circumstances, not my experience, but certainly similar to many stories that I’ve heard about. Stories about people who have sacrificed, people who have been betrayed, and people who keep going.” Join our mailing list Get the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox! The truth of that story helps Lumbly stay true to the character, even through the spectacle that is the MCU. “It’s not my responsibility,” he says of the larger task of keeping up with Isaiah’s place in the ever-expanding shared universe. “I literally just lived with the character and the characters relationship to the other characters laid out in a Marvel universe, which is different from the universe that I thought was the universe.” “I think my responsibility is to put myself fully in the world that has been laid out in the text and be as truthful inside it as possible. I felt that was my one edict, that Isaiah’s story was truth.” That’s a great word to use to describe Isaiah, who made his debut in the 2002 comic miniseries Truth: Red, White & Black, written by Robert Morales and illustrated by Kyle Baker. Drawing inspiration from the real-world Tuskegee Experiments, Truth connected the Captain America story to the country’s history of violence against Black people. Troubling as it is, Lumbly sees hope in Isaiah’s story. “He’s simply talking about what happened, what he saw. And I think that is something that a lot of people can relate to.” “It takes a lot to go through terrible things, talk about how terrible they were, and still be present to move forward beyond what was terrible into the dream that we all have the New Jerusalem, a place where everyone has recognition for the simple fact of being alive and human” However, Lumbly admits that he didn’t initially see genre movies as the way to imagine that better world. “When Buckaroo Banzai came out in 1984, it seemed like a universe, but people weren’t sure it was a universe they wanted to be part of. It talks about things like eighth dimensions, electrodes, and accelerator machines. It just seemed so incredibly wild that there wasn’t initially an audience.” “But time has moved on and now it’s got quite a following. It was out there on the fringes and we live in the fringes now. What happens in the Marvel and DC world is mainstream to what was going on in the ’80s.” Lumbly certainly sees value in that change. “I think it allows for a greater play of imagination. And I think as people become more used to truth inside fantasy and spectacle,” he observes. “We can represent things that people might not otherwise be able to hear. In a time where literacy is under assault, I say whatever you can do to communicate, grab that tool and use it.” That tool metaphor speaks not just to the power of genre stories to tell the truth, but to Lumbly’s approach as an actor, which helps him keep from getting overwhelmed by the vast worlds in which he plays. “It’s all text,” he explains. “That’s the instruction manual.” “I don’t know if you’ve ever put together an IKEA project, but sometimes you find that that spacer is missing or something from the instructions is missing. But you still have to make that piece of furniture functional.” “To me, that’s my work. I think of myself as a workman. I believe that the work is never over, so if we’re in the middle of shooting, I’m still going over the text, trying to unearth as much as possible and then feed it into myself in a way that I can forget it when it’s time to shoot.” It’s work that Carl Lumbly has been doing for decades, and we genre fans are fortunate to have him do it, even if he doesn’t want to do it in Captain America spandex. Captain America: Brave New World is now available on digital streaming services.

What a Broadway Performer’s Renovation Taught Him About Himself
Courtesy of Robert HartwellEvery item on this page was chosen by an ELLE Decor editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.I’ve always wanted to visit Great Barrington, Massachusetts, since I first learned in college that it was the birthplace of W.E.B. Du Bois, the legendary Black activist and writer, who lived there from 1868 to 1873. “I was born by a golden river and in the shadow of two great hills,” Du Bois wrote in his autobiography. “Five years after the Emancipation Proclamation.” In many ways his childhood there was idyllic, “a boy’s paradise,” as he called it. And yet even that far north he felt the severe sting of American racism. Sensing from his daily interactions “that some folks, a few, even several, actually considered my brown skin a misfortune,” he turned inward. He soon stopped playing with white children out of fear of rejection.Recently I found myself searching for a 203-year-old house at the bottom of a sloping street near downtown Great Barrington. I was intrigued by Breaking New Ground, a six-part television series on Max that tells the story of Robert Hartwell, a Broadway performer who bought the house in the summer of 2020 as a refuge from the pandemic and in response to national outrage over George Floyd’s death. The series and a special episode last fall on the OWN network showcase Hartwell’s three-and-a-half-year, $1.5 million renovation.Scheherazade TilletHartwell named his living room “Paulette’s Parlor” after his late aunt. The walls are covered in Toussaint Toile, a Schumacher print by Victor Glemaud with scenes depicting Toussaint Louverture, a leader of the Haitian revolution. The Colonial-style house was built in 1822 by a local doctor named David Leavenworth. In the 1830s it was purchased by the Russell family, who owned the Berkshire Woolen Company. The house sat in a dilapidated state on the market for a decade before Robert found it as a path to repairing himself.During the height of the pandemic, Hartwell lived alone and became so depressed that the only way his stepmother could convince him to go outside for a walk was to coach him step-by-step on how to leave his Brooklyn apartment. He found solace on a park bench a few blocks away, where he began reading a magazine article on the design duo Cortney and Robert Novogratz. The interview focused on how the couple, who have nine children, bought and restored a home in Great Barrington during another period of cataclysmic loss and an outpouring of national grief: 9/11.“When that happened in 2001, New York City was just so dark, and the Novogratz family said they went house hunting in the Berkshires because they wanted a sanctuary,” Hartwell told me when I recently paid him a visit. “That’s when I realized that’s what I’ve always wanted, too. So, while sitting on that bench, I went onto Zillow and typed in ‘Great Barrington.’ This was the third house that I saw. That was on a Saturday. On Monday I found a realtor, came up here, found the key under the rotting column, walked in, and started crying. I felt a sense of belonging and this sacred protection I did not feel in this city. I put in an offer that Tuesday.”His naivete worked to his advantage. He made a cash offer of $379,000 and put his deposit down on Juneteenth, the holiday commemorating the end of slavery, to mark his homeownership as a moment in history and his own life. Hartwell’s house also bears the weight of that history. Du Bois’s mother Mary was a domestic worker in town, and Hartwell believes she may have worked in the house. He also says he discovered that the 1820 federal census listed “free colored persons” as part of Dr. Leavenworth's 13-person household. It was another 50 years before the names of Black people who worked and resided in the house appeared in the census. One way he has addressed this inequality was by permanently removing the symbol of it—a separate servants’ stairwell—whose entry he closed off in his kitchen during the renovation. What’s more, he pays homage to the Black people who took care of the place in the past and for posterity in another way. A document of the census with the identity of one Black servant—John Vanderpool—is enshrined in a frame hanging in the stairwell.Scheherazade TilletFamily photos and a framed census document in the stairhall.Hartwell is over six feet tall, and with his long, gorgeous braided dreadlocks and smooth, deep, rich brown skin, he stands out in this community of 7,000 residents—more than 83 percent of whom are white. His figure easily commands attention, exuding compassion and charm. All of that worked well on the stage for this former Broadway actor, whose credits include Memphis, Motown, and Hello, Dolly! and who now runs the Broadway Collective, a musical theater training company that hosts programs nationwide.Such magnetism and magnanimity shine through in his renovation. He collaborated with Courtney McLeod of Elle Decor A-List firm Right Meets Left Interior Design on the colorful interiors in this four-bedroom house. Right off the entry is “Paulette’s Parlor,” a purple sitting room Hartwell created in honor of his aunt, who died during the pandemic. A lavender and cream wallpaper called Toussaint Toile, made by Schumacher in collaboration with Haitian-American fashion designer Victor Glemaud, wraps around the space. Seen up close, the scenes of Toussaint Louverture, the leader of the Haitian Revolution, at work and play, paired with intricate images of the flowers and landscapes native to the country, are striking. But Aunt Paulette’s spirit lives on in the specifics: Robert reupholstered two chairs from her North Carolina home in purple suiting wool and installed crystal knobs from her house on the doors.Scheherazade TilletThe dance studio features Harlequin sprung floors and ballet barres.Upstairs, two exquisite spaces—a dance studio and a children’s bedroom—embody Hartwell’s ambitions for healing and creating. The all-white dance studio is dedicated to his best friend and fellow choreographer and dancer, Darius Barnes, who died in 2022. The professional grade space has Harlequin sprung floors and ballet barres. Hartwell also dreams of having children, and he created a guestroom where he imagines daughters living one day. It features a pair of custom twin beds and walls sheathed in illustrations of Black women in wide-rimmed glasses, natural hair, and petticoat dresses. Hartwell designed the wallpaper with the artist Kendra Dandy and the company Fine and Dandy (no relation).Moving through these rooms, I felt the entire emotional sweep of his house and Hartwell’s take on American history—a grieving of loss and trauma, on the one hand, and a celebration of the way forward, on the other. He is both looking back and envisioning how his surroundings can be fueled by love and filled by those to come.

The Complete Guide to Energetically Cleansing Your Newly Renovated Home
After months of dust, decisions, and construction chaos, your home renovation is finally complete. The contractors have packed up their tools, the new paint is dry, and that gorgeous lighting fixture you agonized over is perfectly installed. The physical transformation is complete, but there’s one final—and often overlooked—step to truly making your refreshed space feel like home: an energetic cleansing. Just as renovation removes outdated fixtures and repairs structural problems, an energy cleanse helps clear out any lingering staleness, construction stress, and old energy that may be hanging around your beautifully updated space. And while the idea of energy cleansing might sound esoteric, many of these practices are rooted in both ancient wisdom and modern science, and they require only simple household items you likely already have in your kitchen. You've already done the hard work of removing the old and bringing in the new. Now it's about ensuring that the transformation extends beyond the obvious changes. As a certified reiki practitioner and professional tarot reader with years of experience in folk magic traditions, I can attest that nothing beats the feeling of walking into a perfectly cleansed space, and I’m here to show you exactly how it’s done. Air Your Home OutStephen Kent JohnsonA simple, effective cleansing method? Open your doors and windows to let fresh air in and stale air out. We’re taking notes from Terrence Meck and Bret Alberti’s charming Provincetown home. Before beginning any spiritual cleansing, you’ll need to prepare your space physically. Open your windows and doors to create cross-ventilation, even if just for a few minutes if the weather is cold. This simple act literally and symbolically allows stagnant energy to flow out while inviting fresh air in. Sweep, vacuum, or mop your floors, working from the farthest corner of your home toward the front door. This traditional practice helps guide unwanted energy out of your space. Cleanse Your Entryway Your home’s entryway is crucial for filtering the energy that enters your space, making it the ideal place to begin your cleansing ritual. First, make a simple salt wash by dissolving a handful of salt in warm water—salt’s natural purifying properties help dissolve negative energy while physically cleaning the space. Then wipe down your threshold and doorframe with this solution while imagining that you’re creating an invisible barrier that welcomes positive energy and deflects negative influences. Daniel SchäferA small table or shelf next to the front door, as in Elad Yifrach’s Lisbon home, is the perfect spot to place a small bowl of lemon water for protection. For an extra layer of protection, place a small bowl of fresh lemon water near your entrance. Citrus has long been used in cleansing practices for its ability to cut through heavy energies, just as it cuts through grease in your kitchen. Leave this for 24 hours, then dispose of it outside, imagining it carrying away any lingering renovation stress or stagnant energy. If you have a welcome mat, take it outside and give it a good shake while visualizing the release of old energy and the welcoming of new beginnings. Cleanse Your Living SpacesYour living spaces, such as your living room or family room, have likely absorbed the most intense energy. Begin by creating a purifying spray that combines natural elements: in a glass spray bottle, mix water with white vinegar, fresh lemon juice, and a few sprigs of rosemary. As you mist and wipe surfaces, work in clockwise circles—this motion mirrors natural energy flows found in nature and helps activate positive movement in your space. Pay special attention to corners, where energy tends to stagnate, and any areas where walls were removed or modified. These architectural changes have created new energy pathways in your home, and they need special attention to be integrated harmoniously. In the evening place small bowls of salt in room corners, particularly in spaces that underwent major structural changes. Salt's natural absorption properties work overtime while you sleep, drawing out any residual heavy energy. Remember to dispose of this salt outside your home the next morning—never wash it down your drains, as it's now carrying the energy you're trying to remove.Cleanse Your KitchenWilliam Jess LairdNeed some motivation to cleanse your kitchen? Just look at this perfectly peaceful kitchen, designed by Silvia Furmanovich. The kitchen, traditionally the heart of the home, deserves particular attention in your cleansing ritual. This space nourishes both body and soul, and its energy directly affects the food prepared here and, by extension, your well-being. Fill your biggest pot with water and add generous slices of lemon, fresh rosemary sprigs (which have natural purifying properties), and a splash of white vinegar. Bring this to a boil, then reduce to a simmer, allowing the steam to purify the air and remove any lingering paint fumes or construction odors (the vinegar is excellent for this). As the mixture simmers, imagine the steam carrying away old energy and infusing your kitchen with fresh, nurturing energy. Keep a small bowl of fresh herbs on your windowsill or counter—basil, mint, or rosemary are excellent choices—to maintain the positive energy flow you’ve created.Cleanse the BedroomsThe bedroom may be the most important space to cleanse, since its energy directly impacts your rest and rejuvenation. This intimate space needs to be completely free of the chaotic energy that accompanies a renovation, allowing you to fully rest and recharge. Joshua McHughYour bedroom is your sanctuary. This light and airy bedroom, designed by Eve Robinson, is giving us all the calm, peaceful vibes we need.Mix equal parts salt and baking soda. While salt absorbs negative energy, baking soda helps neutralize both odors and energetic imbalances. Sprinkle this mixture lightly over soft surfaces like rugs, carpets, and even mattresses (test a small area first). As you do this, visualize your bedroom being reset to a peaceful, calm state. For a deeper energy reset, work with the cycles of the moon. During the waning phase—when the moon is decreasing in size—place a glass of water mixed with white vinegar and three pinches of salt on your nightstand. This practice, rooted in folk traditions, helps draw out heavy energy just as the moon pulls at the tides. Each morning for three days dispose of the water outside your home and refresh it at night. Under your bed—a space that can trap stagnant energy—place small sachets of dried lavender and rosemary, or even a few bay leaves, which have been used for centuries as protective herbs.Cleanse Your BathroomsBathrooms present a unique challenge in energy work—they're spaces where we quite literally wash away what we don't need, making them natural energy drains. But with the right cleansing approach, your bathroom can become a place of renewal. Theo TennantAll you really need is some white vinegar and a bathtub or shower, but so much the better if your bathroom is like this one one designed by Maria Speake and Adam Hills of Retrouvius.Begin by adding a full cup of white vinegar to a warm bath or shower. As the steam rises, it carries vinegar's purifying properties throughout the space, neutralizing both physical and energy residue. Along windowsills and doorways, create a protective boundary using a line of sea salt. This ancient practice helps prevent energy from stagnating in these naturally damp places. Leave the salt in place for a full 24 hours before sweeping it away (again, dispose of it outside). To maintain positive energy flow, introduce living elements—a small potted plant like bamboo or aloe vera can thrive in bathroom humidity while actively purifying the energy.Do a Final Overall Home CleanseAfter tending to individual spaces, the final step in harmonizing your newly renovated home involves creating and working with blessed water—a practice that dates back centuries across various traditions, from Christianity to Hinduism, each of which recognizes water’s unique ability to both purify and carry intention. In the Christian tradition, particularly Catholicism, the practice of using blessed water dates back to the early church, with documentation from the 3rd century describing the blessing of water for sacred purposes. This ritual is particularly powerful, because water, like your home, is a conductor of energy capable of holding and transmitting the intentions you set for your space. In a large glass bowl (avoid plastic, which can hold on to old energies), combine filtered water with three pinches of sea salt and either three drops of rosemary essential oil or a fresh sprig of rosemary. Hold your hands over the bowl and take a moment to center yourself, imagining pure white light flowing from your hands into the water. Set your intentions for your newly renovated home—perhaps harmony, creativity, or joy, or whatever qualities you wish to invite into your space.Starting at your home’s main entrance and moving clockwise through each room, dip your fingers into the blessed water and scatter droplets around your space. When you’ve completed your circuit of the home, return to the front door. Take the remaining water and, starting at the top of the doorframe, trace a line of droplets down each side and across the threshold, sealing your home in protective, purified energy. The remaining water should be poured at the base of a tree or plant outside your home. Your home is now ready for its next chapter—beautifully renovated, energetically cleared, and harmoniously aligned with your intentions for the future. ‘Electrotech’ can cut Europe’s reliance on fossil fuel imports, report finds
Europe can dramatically cut its dependence on imported fossil fuels by adopting electricity-based technologies, according to a new report. Electric vehicles, heat pumps, and renewables could cut global reliance on imported fossil fuels by 70% when used to replaced them in transport, heating, and power, according to energy think tank Ember. They would also save importers an estimated $1.3 trillion (€1.14 trillion) globally each year, Ember found. The think tank refers to this trio of technologies as “electrotech.” Cutting reliance on US, Russian fossil fuels Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 exposed one of Europe’s greatest vulnerabilities — its reliance on imported fossil fuels to power its vehicles, heat its buildings, and drive its industries forward. Three years on, Europe is still hooked on foreign supplies of oil and gas. Many European states cater to the majority of their primary energy needs from these fossil fuel imports. The countries include Italy (77%), Spain (74%), Germany (67%), and France (51%), Ember found. The 💜 of EU techThe latest rumblings from the EU tech scene, a story from our wise ol' founder Boris, and some questionable AI art. It's free, every week, in your inbox. Sign up now!“Fossil-importing nations are like frogs in boiling water, failing to detect the gradually increasing danger,” said Kingsmill Bond, energy strategist at Ember. “Import dependency has been rising for decades, and now Donald Trump has turned up the heat to a boil.” Europe has more than halved its imports of Russian fossil fuels since Moscow invaded Ukraine. But in the process, it has shifted its dependencies across the Atlantic. The EU imported more oil and gas from the US than any other country in 2024.  Concerns over this dependence have grown since Donald Trump’s reelection. Trump’s tariff wars and rising regional conflicts have placed global trade under greater threat than at any time since the Second World War. Faced with increasingly volatile global markets, “electrotech offers the fastest escape route,” said Bond. Looking east Rapid adoption of electric vehicles would make the largest single contribution to Europe’s energy independence, the report found. By cutting oil use in road transport, EVs could slash imports by a third. Scaling up solar and wind adds another 23%. Replacing imported fossil fuels in buildings with heat pumps contributes a further 14%.  In 2024, China was by far the largest exporter of solar panels, batteries, and electric vehicles to the EU. However, even though boosting Europe’s share of electrotech might deepen the region’s reliance on China, this poses a less significant threat to energy security than depending on fossil fuel imports, the report found. Fossil fuels must be imported and burned without pause. Electric technologies, however, need just one import — of a solar panel or battery, for instance — to secure energy for years, if not decades. Rapid adoption of electric technologies will also be crucial to meeting the EU’s target of carbon neutrality by 2050. Fusion energy could be ‘decisive building block’ for Europe’s energy security
Highly dependent on imported fossil fuels and renewable energy technologies from foreign powers such as the US, China, and Russia, Europe’s energy security is in a precarious state. One potential fix? Harnessing nuclear fusion — the same atom-colliding reaction that powers the Sun and stars. While not yet proven commercially, fusion energy could provide Europe with a vital source of safe, locally produced, always-on clean power. Another plus is that future fusion power plants will likely run on abundant fuels like deuterium and tritium, which aren’t confined to specific geographies. Francesco Sciortino, co-founder and CEO of German startup Proxima Fusion, believes fusion energy can complement wind and solar power and become a “decisive building block” for Europe’s energy security. “Fusion holds the potential to fundamentally transform the way we think about energy, changing the world from a place that’s controlled by those with reserves of oil and gas, to one where technology lets countries control their own fate,” he told TNW.  One of the most advanced kind of fusion energy globally approaches is magnetic confinement. These ring-shaped machines use powerful magnetic fields to contain super-hot plasma, creating the conditions for fusion reactions to occur. It’s a technology in which Europe already has a head start.  REGISTER “Europe has an incredible strength in magnetic confinement fusion, with around twice the number of researchers and large-scale [fusion] devices than the US,” said Sciortino.  Proxima — the first company to spin out from the Max Planck Institute of Plasma Physics in Germany — is building a type of magnetic confinement device called a stellarator. This machine differs from the more common tokamak design at the heart of major international projects like ITER in France and STEP in the UK.   While more complex to build, stellarators have several advantages over tokamaks. They need less power to operate and make the plasma easier to control. This stability is critical for a viable fusion energy plant.  Europe is a world leader in this kind of fusion technology. Germany hosts the most advanced stellarator, Wendelstein 7-X. That machine laid the foundation for Proxima’s Stellaris reactor design, revealed in February.  Stellaris is set to be completed in just six years. The machine will lay the foundation for Proxima’s first 1GW fusion reactor, which the company hopes will power up sometime in the 2030s.  Proxima is one of dozens of fusion energy startups racing to commercialise the technology, many of which are Europe-based. The best-funded include the UK’s Tokamak Energy and Germany’s Marvel Fusion.  The future of fusion energy There’s a cliche that fusion technology is always “30 years away,” but 70% of experts believe we’ll have a fusion device powering the grid by 2035, a Fusion Industry Association survey found last year.  If those predictions come to pass, fusion could become an important part of Europe’s renewable energy mix — and one with distinct advantages. Unlike wind or solar, fusion would provide continuous power. Unlike fossil fuels, much of which is imported from countries like Russia and the US, fusion is clean and could be homegrown, boosting energy security.    However, with the US leading in private investment in fusion energy, Sciortino warned that Europe may lose its advantage and urged governments to support emerging startups. “This is an important moment for Europe — a moment when we have the chance to make choices that will define the coming decades, and a chance to seize the lead in the global race to commercial fusion,” he said. “Europe cannot afford to squander the opportunity; it must invest in companies that are working towards our continent’s energy security and sovereignty.” European sovereignty will be a hot topic at TNW Conference, which takes place on June 19-20 in Amsterdam.
