An OpenAI researcher who worked on GPT-4.5 had their green card denied
Kai Chen, a Canadian AI researcher working at OpenAI who’s lived in the U.S. for 12 years, was denied a green card, according to Noam Brown, a leading research scientist at the company. In a post on X, Brown said that Chen learned of the decision Friday and must soon leave the country. “It’s deeply concerning that one of the best AI researchers I’ve worked with […] was denied a U.S. green card,” wrote Brown. “A Canadian who’s lived and contributed here for 12 years now has to leave. We’re risking America’s AI leadership when we turn away talent like this.” Another OpenAI employee, Dylan Hunn, said in a post that Chen was “crucial” for GPT-4.5, one of OpenAI’s flagship AI models. Green cards can be denied for all sorts of reasons, and the decision won’t cost Chen her job. In a follow-up post, Brown said that Chen plans to work remotely from an Airbnb in Vancouver “until [the] mess hopefully gets sorted out.” But it’s the latest example of foreign talent facing high barriers to living, working, and studying in the U.S. under the Trump administration. OpenAI didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. However, in a post on X last July, Altman called for changes to make it easier for “high-skill” immigrants to move to and work in the U.S. Over the past few months, more than 1,700 international students in the U.S., including AI researchers who’ve lived in the country for a number of years, have had their visa statuses challenged as part of an aggressive crackdown. While the government has accused some of these students of supporting Palestinian militant groups or engaging in “antisemitic” activities, others have been targeted for minor legal infractions, like speeding tickets or other traffic violations. Meanwhile, the Trump administration has turned a skeptical eye toward many green card applicants, reportedly suspending processing of requests for legal permanent residency submitted by immigrants granted refugee or asylum status. It has also taken a hardline approach to green card holders it perceives as “national security” threats, detaining and threatening several with deportation. AI labs like OpenAI rely heavily on foreign research talent. According to Shaun Ralston, an OpenAI contractor providing support for the company’s API customers, OpenAI filed more than 80 applications for H1-B visas last year alone and has sponsored more than 100 visas since 2022. H1-B visas, favored by the tech industry, allow U.S. companies to temporarily employ foreign workers in “specialty occupations” that require at least a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent. Recently, immigration officials have begun issuing “requests for evidence” for H-1Bs and other employment-based immigration petitions, asking for home addresses and biometrics, a change some experts worry may lead to an uptick in denied applications. Immigrants have played a major role in contributing to the growth of the U.S. AI industry. According to a study from Georgetown’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology, 66% of the 50 “most promising” U.S.-based AI startups on Forbes’ 2019 “AI 50” list had an immigrant founder. A 2023 analysis by the National Foundation for American Policy found that 70% of full-time graduate students in fields related to AI are international students. Ashish Vaswani, who moved to the U.S. to study computer science in the early 2000s, is one of the co-creators of the transformer, the seminal AI model architecture that underpins chatbots like ChatGPT. One of the co-founders of OpenAI, Wojciech Zaremba, earned his doctorate in AI from NYU on a student visa. The U.S.’s immigration policies, cutbacks in grant funding, and hostility to certain sciences have many researchers contemplating moving out of the country. Responding to a Nature poll of over 1,600 scientists, 75% said that they were considering leaving for jobs abroad.

Reburn launches ambitious new IP with debut of La Quimera on PC via Steam (Update: delayed)
Game developer, Reburn has launched its first original narrative sci-fi shooter game, La Quimera on PC via Steam. Formerly known as 4A Games Ukraine, one of multiple studios that worked on the critically acclaimed Metro game series, Reburn has created La Quimera, set in a futuristic Latin American megalopolis overrun by technological collapse, sinister corporate dealings, and multiple factions fighting for their own tomorrow. (Update at 8:53 a.m. Pacific 4/25/25: Reburn announced the game launch is delayed). Set in and around the fictional Latin American mega-city of Nuevo Caracas, the game tells the story of a down-on-their-luck PMC group caught up in a vast conflict between rival factions and shadowy corporations, as mystical events increasingly blur the line between reality and illusion. Exosuits provided by one such benefactor allow players to engage in intense combat, utilizing high-tech gadgetry and superhuman strength to outwit their enemies. In addition, eager FPS fans can dive into La Quimera’s unique blend of sci-fi world building, Latin American mysticism, and tense shooter combat. The action in the trailer looks pretty compelling, as does the story about the private military corporations of the future, combined with a kind of alien mysticism. You fight against supersoldiers and robots. Key Features include: An original world and narrative created by Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, The Neon Demon) and E.J.A. Warren. Play the action-packed campaign in single-player or coordinate your efforts in co-op with up to two fellow players (total three player co-op support). Explore the world of Nuevo Caracas and its surrounding jungles, shimmering skyscrapers, and overgrown ruins patrolled by rogue robotic creatures. Collect and upgrade your arsenal of futuristic firearms and exosuit abilities, turning the tide of battle in your favor. “Reburn is incredibly thrilled to finally introduce our fans to the world of La Quimera,” said Dmytro Lymar, CEO and co-founder of Reburn, in a statement. “We’re also very grateful for all the support provided by our community and partners as we continue to face the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Our work wouldn’t be possible without the strength and sacrifice of those defending Ukraine. We have many more thrilling stories to tell and mysterious places to explore within the world of La Quimera, and we hope you enjoy and follow us on this adventure.” Reburn’s roster of developers includes lead gameplay designers, artists, sound engineers, programmers, and more from across the award-winning Metro series, along with other fan-favorite FPS projects including S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Metro 2033, Metro: Last Light, and Metro: Exodus gameplay and AI designer Oleksandr Kostiuk serves as project lead on La Quimera. Reburn’s back story Dmytro Lymar is CEO of Reburn. Lymar has worked in games since 2006, and previously served as director and CEO of 4A Games Ukraine, which operated as a separately owned entity distinct from other 4A Games studios. Reburn was formerly known as 4A Games Ukraine, one of multiple studios working on the Metro video game series. Reburn comprises more than 110 developers, featuring many designers, artists, animators, programmers, QA, and more from across the Metro game franchise. In moving on from its established IP, Kyiv, Ukraine-based Reburn is doing something rare. Most game companies get addicted to sequels. But Reburn is taking a risk on brand new IP. The world and narrative of La Quimera is written and created by Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, The Neon Demon) and E.J.A. Warren. 4A Games was founded in Kyiv in Ukraine in 2006, and development of Metro 2033 began. The company built its own 4A game engine. In 2007, 4A Ukraine worked through its Cyprus office to sign a deal with THQ to fund development and publishing of Metro 2033. The IP rights went to THQ as part of the deal, but the IP rights to the game engine stayed with 4A Ukraine. The title came out in 2010, and it was a hit as a triple-A game. Then THQ signed up for the development of Metro Last Light. But in 2012, THQ went bankrupt and the rights to Metro Last Light were acquired in an auction by Koch Media, operating under the Deep Silver trademark. In 2014, Russia attacked Ukraine for the first time. Part of the team left and founded their own studio in Malta. La Quimera is available now on Windows PC via Steam for $30/£30 GBP. Reburn is an independently-owned video game development studio led by CEO Dmytro Lymar. Reburn was formerly known as 4A Games Ukraine, one of multiple studios working on the Metro video game series. Reburn has more than 110 developers, featuring many designers, artists, animators, programmers, QA, and more from across the Metro game franchise. La Quimera is the studio’s first unique IP. ChatGPT is getting a ‘lightweight’ version of its deep research tool
OpenAI is introducing a new version of its ChatGPT deep research tool that it says is cheaper to operate. The “lightweight” model is available now to free users, as well as those on several of the company’s paid tiers. Deep research (lightweight) is powered by a version of OpenAI’s o4-mini model, and the company says it’s “nearly as intelligent” as the original deep research mode, which produces lengthy reports including citations and summaries of its process. OpenAI adds that the lightweight version delivers responses that are “shorter while maintaining the depth and quality you’ve come to expect.” While the standard deep research model remains exclusive to paid users, the lightweight version is rolling out to free users now, who can use it for five tasks per month. Paid users also get access, and it will kick in by default when they hit their rate limits on the original deep research, giving Team and Plus users a total of 25 monthly tasks across both versions, and Pro users 250. Enterprise and Education users will get access next week at the same limits as Team and Plus users.  Importantly for OpenAI, it says the new version is “significantly cheaper” to run, which matters all the more in a world where it spends “tens of millions of dollars” just to process users saying please and thank you.

‘Wisdom of the Ages’ quest steps and walkthrough in Oblivion Remastered
“Wisdom of the Ages” is a side quest in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered that challenges the hero to be faithful to the teachings of Julianos. By speaking with Sir Henrick, the hero can go to Fort Bulwark and retrieve the Shield of the Crusader — a powerful early-game shield. But you’ll have to navigate a series of puzzles to get it. Our Oblivion Remastered gives you a full “Wisdom of the Ages” walkthrough, including where to start the quest and how to solve all Fort Bulwark puzzles in order to reach the Shield of the Crusader at the end of it. How to start ‘Wisdom of the Ages’ in Oblivion Remastered To start “Wisdom of the Ages,” you must complete the “Pilgrimage” and “Shrine of the Crusader” quests first. Once those two are complete, you can start the “Priory of the Nine” quest. Partway through “Priory of the Nine,” speak with Sir Henrick after defeating him, and he will give you the location of the Shield of the Crusader, which is in Fort Bulwark. “Wisdom of the Ages” runs concurrently with “Priory of the Nine.” Fort Bulwark is near the southeast corner of the map near the Blackwood region. In the Quests menu, you can simply highlight “Wisdom of the Ages” and it will mark Fort Bulwark on your map, or you can look at the screenshot above. ‘Wisdom of Ages’ walkthrough in Oblivion Remastered “Wisdom of Ages” consists of three puzzles, all of which are in Fort Bulwark. You’ll start by having to correctly step on a series of tiles. You’ll then need to make rotate statues into a particular order. You’ll finish with a puzzle that requires you to step on certain panels in a particular order to find items in various chests. Below, we’ll show you how to solve all puzzles in Fort Bulwark so you can complete “Wisdom of Ages.” Tile order puzzle solution in ‘Wisdom of Ages’ After entering Fort Bulwark, make your way to the middle where you’ll see two giant flames while fighting Conjurers along the way. Be careful, as there are some booby traps that’ll shoot arrows out of the walls. When you come across the room with the two giant flames, make your way across — you’ll then enter an area with two Conjurers. After taking them out, you’ll need to activate a handle at the back of the area to open up a gated door nearby.  Go through the newly opened path and until you come across another handle. Activate it to lower the drawbridge near the two giant flames. Go back to the room with the two flames and cross the drawbridge. You’ll come across a puzzle with 12 tiles in a 3×4 fashion. You need to step on one tile per row. The correct order is listed below and pictured above: Left (first row) Middle (second row) Right (third row) Left (fourth row) Statue puzzle solution in ‘Wisdom of Ages’ That will open up the door to the next area in Fort Bulwark. Upon entering, walk down a bit and you’ll hear a person speaking through a locked cell. This is Sir Therdret. Next to his cell, there’s a handle to set him free — do it. After setting him free, go further into Fort Bulwark. It’s a simple path with some turning so you shouldn’t get lost. You’ll eventually reach a room with four statues. The solution here is simple: Just turn each of the statues using the crank of their faces so that they face the middle, looking at the icon in the center between them, like so: There are two Conjurers in this room as well so be sure to take care of them. When that’s done, the flames in the room will extinguish, and a door at the back of the room will open, and the tunnel leads you to the last area of Fort Bulwark. Rodgar’s chests puzzle solution in ‘Wisdom of Ages’ Good news first: there are no enemies in here. Bad news: you have one more puzzle to solve! This puzzle is a bit more complicated. You’ll reach a room with a panel and a gold chest in the middle, with eight normal chests around the room. When you step on the panel, one of the eight chests will light up and display an item. The gold chest contains one of Rodgar’s eight items at a time; you have to take it, then match the appropriate item with the chest that lights up. Keep going until you’ve placed all eight items. For example, Rodgar’s Skull goes into the chest that lights up and displays a skull. You’ll know you put the right item in the correct chest when the area shakes and your controller vibrates. To make things easier, here’s the correct order in clockwise, from left to right, with your back facing away from the golden chest: Rodgar’s Stone Rodgar’s Helm Rodgar’s Goblet Rodgar’s Sword Rodgar’s Book Rodgar’s Hammer Rodgar’s Skull Rodgar’s Gem Once all eight items are placed correctly, the flames will extinguish and you’ll open up the door to the Shield of the Crusader, as well as a few other items, including a few Potions of Insight, Potions of Sorcery, Restore Intelligence scrolls, and Restore Willpower scrolls. Once the shield is taken the quest is complete and there will be two entrances behind the altar that lead back to the first zone and back to the entrance. “The Priory of the Nine” quest will be updated as well. What happens if you don’t free Sir Therdret in Oblivion Remastered? If you don’t free Sir Therdret, he will find his own way out. Regardless of your decision, he will meet with you later on during “Priory of the Nine.” However, if you free him, he feels indebted to you and will ask if he can become a knight.

The LAYER PiA Imagines a More Human, Better Designed AI Ecosystem
AI, or Artificial Intelligence, is rapidly becoming an integral part of our digital lives, but today’s AI experiences still feel fragmented, impersonal, and often distant. British creative agency LAYER wants to change that. Enter PiA – the Personal Intelligent Assistant – a speculative but compelling concept that envisions AI not as a collection of disjointed tools, but as a cohesive, deeply integrated ecosystem designed with emotion, elegance, and humanity at its core. To be clear, PiA isn’t a product you can buy – at least not yet. It’s a conceptual framework that blends cutting-edge design with emerging technologies to demonstrate what an emotionally intelligent AI might look like in the near future. More than just another virtual assistant, PiA is a suite of devices and a visual identity that reimagines how we interact with smart systems – by making them feel less artificial and more alive. At the heart of the PiA system is a trio of devices: a smartphone, a biometric earbud, and a wearable camera module, supported by a sleek battery pack. Together, these elements form an interconnected AI-powered system that sees, senses, listens, and communicates, offering bespoke assistance informed by real-time biometric and environmental data. The PiA smartphone has been “distilled into its essential form,” according to LAYER. It features a slim, recycled glass build with a long-format OLED display that hides the front-facing camera using transparent screen technology – eliminating the need for a cutout or notch and delivering a completely uninterrupted interface. The smartphone can function with or without the camera and battery modules attached, making it flexible and lightweight. It’s designed to be more than just a device – it’s a bridge between the physical and digital realms, capable of offering tailored support ranging from health coaching and personalized navigation to planning trips and booking events based on user preferences. The biometric earbud provides a direct line of communication between the user and PiA, collecting data via sensors located at the inner ear’s pulse point. These sensors monitor temperature, heart rate, and other vital stats, giving the AI a nuanced understanding of the user’s physical state. Unlike wrist-based wearables, the earbud allows for more integrated and accurate data collection, all while delivering voice-based feedback and guidance. Meanwhile, the wearable camera module, shaped like a subtle pin or brooch, acts as PiA’s eyes. It captures real-world visuals, giving the assistant context beyond what’s possible through audio or text alone. This visual input allows the AI to interpret surroundings, assist with navigation using real-time video overlays, or recognize people and objects in the user’s environment. What truly sets PiA apart is LAYER’s focus on emotional design. “PiA was born from a desire to bring emotion to artificial intelligence. In a world where AI is often feared, we believe that fear is rooted in its ‘artificial’ label. Our mission was to make it more human,” said LAYER founder Benjamin Hubert. “By weaving emotion and humanity into the fabric of speculative AI, PiA transforms the relationship between user and technology.” LAYER’s material choices support this philosophy. Rather than the cold, utilitarian finishes common in today’s smart devices, PiA’s components are made with recycled glass and textured finishes reminiscent of jewelry or eyewear, creating an aesthetic that’s more tactile, natural, and human. This design approach, paired with a refined typographic brand identity, makes PiA feel like a thoughtful companion rather than a cold machine. Unlike traditional AI assistants that rely heavily on voice-only commands and are often tied to the smartphone as a single interface, PiA is designed as a distributed, immersive experience. It introduces a visual avatar within the phone’s operating system that interacts emotionally with the user, adding warmth and personality to digital exchanges. This avatar isn’t just decorative – it provides continuous visual feedback, subtly conveying emotions and forging a deeper connection between user and system. By gathering biometric and environmental data in real time, PiA offers a form of assistance that evolves with the user’s context. Whether it’s suggesting when to take a break, recommending healthier habits, or offering emotional support, PiA aims to feel more like a digital companion than a command-driven assistant. Sure, wearable cameras and always-listening devices still raise important questions about privacy, and those concerns shouldn’t be dismissed. But PiA dares to explore a more nuanced, human-centered approach to assistive technology – one where emotional intelligence is just as important as artificial intelligence.
