  • New Apple Vision Pro study reveals promising performance in radiology
    9to5mac.com
A new study published this week by researchers at the University of California, San Diego highlights how Apple Vision Pro can be used in healthcare settings. In particular, this study sought to compare diagnostic performance when using Apple Vision Pro versus using a desktop. Researchers also touted the new opportunities for 3D virtualization and ergonomics offered by Apple Vision Pro. In the study, radiologists were equipped with Apple Vision Pro units tasked with using the Visage Ease VP app to review 100 scans CT to detect diverticulitis. Performance was then compared against viewing the same scans on desktop. The study also surveyed radiologists on things like preference between devices and ease of use. The results of the study reveal no significant difference in performance between radiologists using Apple Vision Pro versus a desktop. Given the importance of CT within radiology, it is important to address whether its highest-resolution features can be visualized on imaging displays such as those of next-generation VR/AR headsets. This pilot study found no significant difference in the pooled diagnostic performance for diverticulitis between radiologists using a headset versus a desktop, and radiologists reported an overall good user experience with the headset. These results suggest that the display of this headset may suffice for visualization of such features.Additionally, the study found that Apple Vision Pro opens the door for new opportunities in 3D visualization and radiology: In addition, the headset offers new opportunities for 3D visualization through its immersive display and new possibilities for ergonomics through the eye and hand tracking of its user interface. For these reasons, next-generation VR/AR headsets are promising for many applications throughout radiology. Researchers in the study also pointed to other investigations of using VR products for medical imaging: These showed promising diagnostic performance of a headset for pulmonary nodules, favorable user experiences with a virtual reading room for presurgical planning, and many other potential applications such as intraoperative guidance, where augmented reality may become essential. Eye tracking has been investigated extensively in radiology, for studying search patterns and accelerating image annotation. These utilized desktop-based devices, but headset-based devices may facilitate eye tracking in additional applications. You can read the full study in the Journal of Imaging Informatics in Medicine. • Secret Video Shows Top Climate Change Conference Official Promising to Facilitate Fossil Fuel Deals
    futurism.com
"We have a lot of gas fields that are to be developed."Oiled UpThe United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP), a yearly climate change conference where world leaders convene to discuss just how screwed we really are, has long been revealed to be a sham. The grip the fossil fuel industry has had over the organizers and host countries became painfully apparent last year when conference leader and Emirati oil executive Sultan Al Jaber claimed that there's "no science" behind phasing out fossil fuels to keep global temperatures from creeping above 1.5 degrees Celsius, a preposterous and self-serving claim that flies in the face of decades of scientific evidence. And this year's COP29 climate change conference in Azerbaijan is seemingly no different. A secret recording obtained by the BBC shows Elnur Soltanov, the chief executive of the COP29 team who also happens to be the Asian nation's deputy energy minister and senior executive at the national oil and gas company Socar discussing "investment opportunities.""We have a lot of gas fields that are to be developed," he can be heard saying in the video.Call the COPsSoltanov was trying to woo an undercover representative from the human rights watch campaign Global Witness, who told the oil exec he represented the interests of a fictitious Hong Kong-based oil and gas company."I would be happy to create a contact between your team and their team [Socar] so that they can start discussions," Soltanov told the fake oil operative.None of this should come as much of a surprise. Azerbaijan's economy relies massively on oil, accounting for a whopping 90 percent of its experts.Naturally, the UN body reacted with outrage, telling the BBC that Soltanov's naked interest in furthering oil and gas investments was "completely unacceptable" and a "betrayal."Christiana Figueres, who oversaw the signing of the historic Paris Agreement in 2015, told the BBC that Soltanov's behavior was "contrary and egregious" to the purpose of the yearly conferences, and a "treason."Last year's COP28 conference turned into a counterproductive circus, as the BBC revealed at the time, with the United Arab Emirates using scheduled meetings for "private" oil and gas business talks. In other words, claiming these summits are designed to "measure progress and negotiate multilateral responses to climate change" is in many ways misleading and disingenuous. The kind of investments Soltanov is encouraging, after all, directly contradict the promise nations made at last year's climate change conference when they agreed to transition away from fossil fuels. In short, COP29 sounds like little more than a forum for oil and gas executives to strike new deals and world leaders to make vacuous promises often without taking any meaningful action.Share This Article

  • Monkeys That Escaped Research Facility Still on the Loose, Authorities Say
    futurism.com
2(8) Days LaterOn Wednesdady, news emerged that over 40 research monkeys had broken free from a research facility in South Carolina. The local Yemassee Police Department confirmed that a total of 43 macaques had escaped from a facility run by Alpha Genesis, one of the largest monkey breeders in the world because their keepers forgot to keep doors to their enclosures shut. And according to the latest reports, the monkeys still on the run in the forested region surrounding the facility near Yamassee, South Carolina.Law enforcement told USA Today on Friday that while the furry rascals have since been located, recapturing them may prove difficult.Footage obtained by the Daily Mail reportedly shows the monkeys scuttling off into the nearby woods.Fortunately, the situation is unlikely to turn into a "28 Days Later"-like apocalypse, because the six-to-seven-pound females are "too young to carry disease," as an Alpha Genesis spokesperson told police, per USA Today."We want to assure the community that there is no health risk associated with these animals," the police confirmed on Wednesday.Human ErrorAccording to the report, Alpha Genesis staff are "attempting to entice the animals back using food."Unsurprisingly, authorities are also advising local residents from approaching the animals or interacting with them in any way."These animals are highly sensitive and easily startled," the Yemassee Police Department said in a statement. "The public is advised to avoid the area as these animals are described as skittish and any additional noise or movement could hinder their safe capture.""The incident yesterday involved a new enclosure, and occurred because the caretaker who was doing routine cleaning and feeding failed to secure two separate," Alpha Genesis CEO Greg Westergaard told NBC. "It was purely human error."It's not even the first time monkeys have escaped from the same Alpha Genesis facility. In 2016, 19 of the animals slipped free but were promptly returned just six hours later.More on the situation: Police Warn Homeowners to Lock Down Houses as Dozens of Monkeys Escape Research FacilityShare This Article

  • AndroxGh0st Malware Integrates Mozi Botnet to Target IoT and Cloud Services
    thehackernews.com
Nov 08, 2024Ravie LakshmananIoT Security / VulnerabilityThe threat actors behind the AndroxGh0st malware are now exploiting a broader set of security flaws impacting various internet-facing applications, while also deploying the Mozi botnet malware."This botnet utilizes remote code execution and credential-stealing methods to maintain persistent access, leveraging unpatched vulnerabilities to infiltrate critical infrastructures," CloudSEK said in a new report.AndroxGh0st is the name given to a Python-based cloud attack tool that's known for its targeting of Laravel applications with the goal of sensitive data pertaining to services like Amazon Web Services (AWS), SendGrid, and Twilio.Active since at least 2022, it has previously leveraged flaws in the Apache web server (CVE-2021-41773), Laravel Framework (CVE-2018-15133), and PHPUnit (CVE-2017-9841) to gain initial access, escalate privileges, and establish persistent control over compromised systems.Earlier this March, U.S. cybersecurity and intelligence agencies revealed that attackers are deploying the AndroxGh0st malware to create a botnet for "victim identification and exploitation in target networks."The latest analysis from CloudSEK reveals a strategic expansion of the targeting focus, with the malware now exploiting an array of vulnerabilities for initial access -CVE-2014-2120 (CVSS score: 4.3) - Cisco ASA WebVPN login page XSS vulnerability CVE-2018-10561 (CVSS score: 9.8) - Dasan GPON authentication bypass vulnerabilityCVE-2018-10562 (CVSS score: 9.8) - Dasan GPON command injection vulnerabilityCVE-2021-26086 (CVSS score: 5.3) - Atlassian Jira path traversal vulnerability CVE-2021-41277 (CVSS score: 7.5) - Metabase GeoJSON map local file inclusion vulnerabilityCVE-2022-1040 (CVSS score: 9.8) - Sophos Firewall authentication bypass vulnerability CVE-2022-21587 (CVSS score: 9.8) - Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) Unauthenticated arbitrary file upload vulnerabilityCVE-2023-1389 (CVSS score: 8.8) - TP-Link Archer AX21 firmware command injection vulnerability CVE-2024-4577 (CVSS score: 9.8) - PHP CGI argument injection vulnerability CVE-2024-36401 (CVSS score: 9.8) - GeoServer remote code execution vulnerability"The botnet cycles through common administrative usernames and uses a consistent password pattern," the company said. "The target URL redirects to /wp-admin/, which is the backend administration dashboard for WordPress sites. If the authentication is successful, it gains access to critical website controls and settings."The attacks have also been observed leveraging unauthenticated command execution flaws in Netgear DGN devices and Dasan GPON home routers to drop a payload named "Mozi.m" from different external servers ("200.124.241[.]140" and "117.215.206[.]216").Mozi is another well-known botnet that has a track record of striking IoT devices to co-opt them into a malicious network for conducting distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. While the malware authors were arrested by Chinese law enforcement officials in September 2021, a precipitous decline in Mozi activity wasn't observed until August 2023, when unidentified parties issued a kill switch command to terminate the malware. It's suspected that either the botnet creators or Chinese authorities distributed an update to dismantle it.AndroxGh0st's integration of Mozi has raised the possibility of a possible operational alliance, thereby allowing it to propagate to more devices than ever before."AndroxGh0st is not just collaborating with Mozi but embedding Mozi's specific functionalities (e.g., IoT infection and propagation mechanisms) into its standard set of operations," CloudSEK said."This would mean that AndroxGh0st has expanded to leverage Mozi's propagation power to infect more IoT devices, using Mozi's payloads to accomplish goals that otherwise would require separate infection routines.""If both botnets are using the same command infrastructure, it points to a high level of operational integration, possibly implying that both AndroxGh0st and Mozi are under the control of the same cybercriminal group. This shared infrastructure would streamline control over a broader range of devices, enhancing both the effectiveness and efficiency of their combined botnet operations."Found this article interesting? • How AI is Reshaping the Food Services Industry
    www.informationweek.com
John Edwards, Technology Journalist & AuthorNovember 8, 20246 Min ReadPanther Media GmbH via Alamy Stock PhotoThe food services industry might seem an unlikely candidate for AI adoption, yet the market, which includes full-service restaurants, quick-service restaurants, catering companies, coffee shops, private chefs, and a variety of other participants, is rapidly recognizing AI's immediate and long-term potential.AI in food services is poised for widespread adoption, predicts Colin Dowd, industry strategy senior manager at Armanino, an accounting and consulting firm. "As customer expectations shift, companies will be forced to meet their demands through AI solutions that are similar to their competitors," he notes in an email interview.Mike Kostyo, a vice president with food industry consulting firm Menu Matters, agrees. "It's hard to think of any facet of the food industry that isn't being transformed by AI," he observes via email. Kostyo says his research shows that consumers want lower costs --making it easier to customize or personalize a meal -- and faster service. "We tell our clients they should focus on those benefits and make sure they're clear to consumers when they implement new AI technologies."Seeking InsightsOn the research side, AI is being used to make sense out of the data deluge firms currently face. "Food companies are drowning in research and data, both from their own sources, such as sales data and loyalty programs, and from secondary sources," Kostyo says. "It's just not feasible for a human to wade through all of that data, so today's companies use AI to sift through it all, make connections, and develop recommendations."Related:AI can, for example, detect that spicy beverages are starting to catch on when paired with a particular flavor. "So, it may recommend building that combination into a new menu option or product," Kostyo says. It can do this constantly over time, taking into account billions of data points, creating innovation starting positions. "The team can take it from there, filling their pipeline with relevant products and menu items."Data collected from multiple sources can also be used to track customer preferences, providing early insights on emerging flavor trends. "For example, Campbells and Coca-Cola are currently using AI in tandem with food scientists to create new and exciting flavors and dishes for their customers based on insights collected from both internal and external data sources," Dowd says. "This approach can also be applied to restaurants and other locations that rely on recipes."Management and InnovationAI can also optimize inventory management. "AI is being used to determine when to order, and how much inventory a company needs to purchase, by analyzing historical data and current trends," Dowd says. "This allows the restaurant to maintain ideal inventory levels, reduce waste and better ensure that the restaurant always has the necessary ingredients."Related:When used as an innovation generator, AI can inspire fresh ideas. "Sometimes, when you get in that room together to come up with a new menu item or product, just facing down that blank page is the hardest part," Kostyo observes. "You can use AI for some starter ideas to work with." He says he loves to feed outlandish ideas into AI, such as, 'What would a dessert octopus look like?' "It may then develop this really wild dessert, like a chocolate octopus with different-flavored tentacles."Customer ExperienceAI promises to help restaurants provide a consistently positive experience to consumers, says Jay Fiske, president of Powerhouse Dynamics, an AI and IoT solutions provider for major multi-site food service firms, including Dunkin', Arby's, and Buffalo Wild Wings. He notes in an email interview that AI and ML can be used to flag concerning data, indicating potential problems, such as frozen meat going into the oven before it should, or predicting a likely freezer breakdown sometime within the next two weeks. "In these situations, facility managers have time to quickly preempt any issues that could cost them money, as well as their reputations with consumers," he says.Related:Another way AI is transforming the food services industry is by providing more efficient and reliable energy management. "This is important, because restaurants, ghost kitchens, and other food service businesses are extremely energy intensive," Fiske says. Refrigerators, freezers, ovens, dish washers, fryers, and air conditioners all consume massive amounts of power that can be controlled and optimized by AI.Future OutlookThe sky is the limit for food services industry AI, Kostyo states, noting that market players are taking various approaches. Some are excited about AI, and afraid to get left behind, so they're jumping right into these tools, while others are a little more skittish, concerned about ethical and privacy issues.Kostyo urges AI adopters to periodically monitor their customers' AI acceptance level. "In some ways, customers are very open to AI," he says. "Forty-six percent of consumers told us they're already using AI to assist with food decisions in some fashion, such as deciding what to cook or where to eat." Kostyo adds that 59% of surveyed consumers believe that AI can develop a recipe that's just as delicious as anyhuman chef could create. On the other hand, people still often crave a human touch. Kostyo reports that 66% of consumers would still rather have a dish that was created by a human chef. "Consumers frequently push back when they see AI being used in a way that would take a human job."Service FirstKostyo urges the food industry to use AI in ways that will enhance the overall consumer experience. "At the end of the day, we are the hospitality industry, and we need to remember that."About the AuthorJohn EdwardsTechnology Journalist & AuthorJohn Edwards is a veteran business technology journalist. • AI on the Road: The Auto Industry Sees the Promise
    www.informationweek.com
Phong Nguyen, Chief AI Officer, FPT SoftwareNovember 8, 20244 Min ReadBrain light via Alamy StockGenerative AI is reshaping the future of the automotive industry. For industry leaders, this is not just some cutting-edge technology, but a strategic enabler poised to redefine the market landscape. With 79% of executives expecting significant AI-driven transformation within the next three years, harnessing GenAI is no longer optional but essential to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving sector. As AI continues to make its mark, it transforms how vehicles are designed, secures them against evolving threats, and enhances the overall driving experience. From enabling cars to anticipate and respond to cyber risks to accelerating innovation in design, and creating more personalized driving experiences, AI is redefining the key aspects of automotive development and usage.Stopping Security BreachesWith the automotive industry undergoing rapid transformation, the cybersecurity risks it encounters are also increasing and becoming more complex. High-profile breaches, such as the Pandora ransomware attack on a major German car manufacturer in March 2022, highlight the urgent need for more advanced security strategies. The attackers compromised 1.4TB of sensitive data, including purchase orders, technical diagrams, and internal emails, exposing vulnerabilities within the sector.AI-driven systems, including predictive and generative models, process vast amounts of data in real-time, making them indispensable for detecting unusual patterns that signal potential attacks. By continuously learning from past threats and dynamic adaptation to emerging risks, AI-driven systems detect intrusions and work alongside rule-based or supervised models to predict outcomes and simulate attack scenarios for training purposes. These include isolating compromised nodes, blocking malicious IP addresses, and mitigating threats before they escalate. For this reason, 82% of IT decision-makers intend to invest in AI-driven cybersecurity within the next two years.GenAI's abilities to generate data and patterns empower organizations to stay ahead of cybercriminals by anticipating attacks before they occur. A prime example is a leading automotive manufacturer that has significantly improved the security of its vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication systems by leveraging generative models to simulate various network attack scenarios. This approach allows the network's defensive mechanisms to be trained and tested against imminent breaches.By utilizing models such as variational autoencoders (VAEs) and generative adversarial networks (GANs), which can generate synthetic attack data for simulations, the company could mimic various cyberattack scenarios. This allowed them to detect and mitigate up to 90% of simulated attacks during the testing phases, demonstrating a robust improvement in the overall security posture.Redefining Automotive DesignGenerative AI is ushering in a new wave of innovation in automotive architecture, transforming vehicle design with cutting-edge capabilities. By leveraging generative design techniques, AI-driven systems can automatically produce multiple design iterations, enabling manufacturers to identify the most efficient and effective solutions. GenAI design optimizes engineering and aesthetic decisions, helping manufacturers reduce development time and costs by up to 20%, according to Precedence Research, giving companies a competitive edge in expediting time-to-market.Toyota Research Institute has integrated a generative AI tool that enables designers to leap from a text description to design sketches by specifying stylistic attributes such as sleek, SUV-like, and modern. Tackling the challenges where designs frequently fell short of meeting engineering requirements, this tool integrates both aesthetic and engineering requirements. That allows designers and engineers to collaborate more effectively while ensuring that the final designs meet critical technical specifications. By bridging the gap between creative and engineering teams, companies can ensure that final designs meet essential specifications while enhancing both the speed and quality of design iterations, enabling faster and more efficient innovation.A More Connected and Personalized Driver ExperienceOriginal equipment manufacturers are transforming the customer experience with GenAI in an increasingly demanding market. Unlike traditional voice command systems that rely on static and pre-programmed responses, AI-powered voice technology offers dynamic, natural conversations. Integrated into vehicles, GenAI enhances GPS navigation, entertainment systems, and other in-car functionalities, allowing drivers to interact meaningfully with their vehicles AI assistant.Volkswagen, for example, became the first automotive manufacturer to integrate ChatGPT into its voice assistant IDA. This offers drivers an AI-powered system that manages everything from infotainment to navigation and answers general knowledge questions. As GenAI continues to become more advanced, delivering an exceptional driver experience is now a key differentiator for manufacturers looking to stay competitive. Despite the significant advancements in leveraging AI to enhance customer interactions, many original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) struggle to meet customer expectations. A recent Boston Consulting Group study revealed that, while the quality of the car-buying experience is the most critical decision factor for many customers, only 52% of customers say they are completely satisfied with their most recent car-buying experience. This underscores the need for OEMs to refine the integration of AI-driven systems further to enhance both the purchasing and ownership experience.About the AuthorPhong NguyenChief AI Officer, FPT SoftwarePhong Nguyenis FPT Softwares chief artificial intelligence officer. Separating an actor from their characters is hard enough in this day and age of parasocial relationships between stars and fans, but imagining that many actors have had whole lives beyond their film or television careers is another thing entirely. Some of them spent years or even decades picking up odd jobs before their careers took off, others had passions aside from the world of high drama. Still others had full careers in other industriessuch as, for example, the United States armed forces. Many actors have served their time in the military, during both wartime and peacetime. American actors are American citizens, and the draft was in place until a few decades ago, so anyone could be brought up no matter how famous they were. Others enlisted on their own, or volunteered for service on the home front when duty called. Nevertheless, sometimes its surprising to imagine all these thespians out there in military uniform, learning drills and being shipped off to serve overseas. In honor of our armed forces, we collected twelve famous names you probably know only for their storied acting careers, who also served in nearly every branch of the U.S. military. Some completed their service way before any of us knew their names, and otherssuch as one famous rock musicianserved during the peak of their fame.
