The launch of the original Nest Learning Thermostat was a big moment in the smart home industry. At the time, Nest was a fledgling startup founded by Apple engineers Tony Fadell and Matt Rogers. Sure, the device had handy smart features that allowed it to learn your preferences and adapt accordingly. But arguably the most important thing about it was the fact that it was a thermostat that actually looked nice.At the time, and frankly still today, thermostats were generally ugly white rectangles with dated designs and cheap-feeling buttons. Nest flipped that concept on its head, building a device that was easy to use and looked modern and sleek.Polished GoldNow, the Google-owned Nest is pushing forward once again and, at least from a design perspective, has launched what could be the most important Nest Learning Thermostat release since the original. The new device has a slimmer polished metal ring reminiscent of the Google Pixel Watch (thats on purpose), a larger borderless display, and comes in three colors: Polished Silver, Polished Gold, and Polished Obsidian. Oh yeah, it also supports Matter, the universal smart home standard that will allow it to work outside of Google Home. Thats right Apple users finally have access to a premium-looking thermostat with high-end features. The new, 4th gen device is available right now for $279, and ships with an external sensor for remote temperature monitoring.Polished SilverTo get a deeper look at the design of the new Nest Learning Thermostat, and how the design team at Nest approaches design in general, I had the opportunity to ask Isabelle Olsson, Design Director for Home, Wearables, and CMF across all Google Hardware at Google, a few questions.Design Milk: Nest has always been a design forward company. What are changes in design a reflection of? Changes in design preferences, how design and functionality are related, or something else?Isabelle Olsson: First of all, we wanted to make sure we carried forth what people loved about the original design, such as the sleek round form, the satisfying rotating stainless steel bangle, and the engaging UI. Unlike Trump, the people captured in this video, especially main instigators Gary Miller and Janis Cusack Miller, are going through some things. They've been denounced by the city they live in. The sheriff's department is opening an investigation into the incident. The organizers of the event they were attending revoked their registration. Their details have been spread far and wide on the internet along with evidence of that they're not to be accepted in polite society. In response they pulled their business's Facebook account over the negative comments, and took down its Yelp page over the one-star reviews. Janis Cusack Miller seems to have tried to delete her Facebook page, but instead posted a photo of the instructions for how to delete your Facebook profile. Grandfather's funeral labeled as a gang meetingThis third video tell a more complex story of an old white dude being racist. Said old white dude insists his Black neighbors are hosting a gang meeting, even though they're hosting a family gathering for a funeral. The twist in the story: Unlike the people in Virginia City and (probably) Donald Trump this old white dude seems to have dementiathe way he shambles, the confused look in his eye, the insistence that a car is blocking his driveway even though it clearly isn't, all suggest "Mr. James" is not right in the head any more. His mortified-looking wife tries to shoo him back inside, but Mr. James's neighbors respond with grace. They are patient and understanding, even though they'd be well within their rights to be screaming at him.

Starting next year, Stranger Things fans will be able to watch its stage play spin-off on Broadway. The prequel to the popular sci-fi/horror series, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, won two Olivier Awards and several other accolades since it premiered on West End in December 2023. Its West End production will run until sometime in 2025, thanks to an extended run, but performances on Broadway will also begin on March 28, 2025. That said, the play will officially open at Marquis Theatre in New York on April 22, 2025.The First Shadow is set in 1959, before the events in the Netflix series. Jim/Hop, Joyce and Bob who was played by Sean Astin are seniors in the story who all just want to graduate and leave town. "When new student Henry Creel arrives, his family finds that a fresh start isnt so easy... and the shadows of the past have a very long reach," the play's synopsis reads. It's based on a story by the Duffer Brothers, the creators of Stranger Things who will also serve as the play's creative producers, and will be directed by Tony award winner Stephen Daldry.Casting for the production hasn't been announced yet, but fans can already sign up to make sure they get early access to pre-sale tickets. Those who sign up on The First Shadow's official website will be able to buy pre-sale tickets first, starting at 11AM on September 13.
