• Apple's 9th-gen iPad is on sale for $229 right now
    www.engadget.com
We don't always need the latest and most powerful version of a device, especially when it'll cost more money than an older one that does the trick. If you've been waiting for a good deal on an iPad that can handle the basics, it's worth considering the 9th-generation iPad. A variant with 64GB of storage will run you $229, which is $100 off the regular price. The discount applies to both the silver and space gray colorways. This model is from 2021 and Apple actually discontinued it in May, so this is effectively a fire sale as the company looks to clear out stock quite possibly ahead of a new base iPad. This isn't quite the lowest price that this model has dropped to (it dipped to $209 at one point), but it's a decent offer as long as you're not planning on video editing or playing the latest games natively. The 10.2-inch Retina display should be plenty capable of handling much of your streaming video, web browsing and productivity needs. The iPad should be reasonably zippy as well, thanks to the A13 Bionic chip. You can even use it for sketching if you have the first-gen Apple Pencil. The front-facing ultra-wide camera supports Apple's Center Stage feature. As such, you should stay in the middle of the frame while you're on FaceTime or other video calls. One factor worth considering is that this is the last mainline iPad with a Lightning port. So that's worth keeping in mind if you have an iPhone 15 and have been getting rid of your old Lightning cables. And while Apple's still allowing 9th-gen iPad owners to upgrade to iPadOS 18 when it becomes available, the OS updates won't last forever. Still, if you're looking for an iPad on which to catch up on reading, zip through your inbox or watch the latest season of a show you dig, this is a good option. • Ini Archibong designs packaging for Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre's Gin & Juice
    www.dezeen.com
A hand-drawn lowrider features on the packaging of Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre's premixed drinks brand, envisioned by designer Ini Archibong to "encapsulate the spirit" of 1990s West Coast hip hop.The recently launched drink is named Gin & Juice after the Grammy-nominated, Dr Dre-produced song from Snoop Dog's 1993 debut album Doggystyle a poster child of the G-funk genre popularised by the two artists.Nigerian-American designer Ini Archibong, who also hails from Los Angeles, developed the graphic design for the drink to reflect the cultural influence of their music.Ini Archibong has designed the packaging for Gin & Juice"The goal with the design was to encapsulate the spirit and era of the West Coast when the original Gin and Juice track was released," Archibong told Dezeen. "I wanted to transmit the reverence and unique culture of the era that has now become known worldwide."Central to this is the parental advisory logo, smack dab in the middle of the can, which according to Archibong is "emblematic" of the time."Bringing in the symbol of parental advisory is to remind people how intrusive, new, fresh and frightening this art form was at the time," he said.Read: Snoop Dogg launches edible marijuana range with branding by PentagramWrapped around the bottom of the can is a lowrider, hand-drawn by Los Angeles illustrator Wayne Johnson and rendered in four different colours to correspond to the different Gin & Juice flavours green for citrus, red for melon, purple for passionfruit and orange for apricot. The low-slung car nods to the West Coast cruising culture described in Snoop Dogg's song, where he describes "rolling down the street, smoking indo, sipping on gin and juice".In contrast with the vibrantly coloured lowrider, the drink can itself is rendered in plain white to present the car as if it were being immortalised in a museum.Archibong wanted the can to be "minimal perfection""There's a feeling of minimal perfection that I wanted to instil into the product," Archibong said. "Dre inspired the minimal aesthetic, with his approach and album art, alongside the sonic quality of his music."Gin & Juice is the first release from Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre's drinks company, with more set to follow."Together, we always try to create magic," Dr Dre said. "We're having fun, being creative. And everything about this product is really us. There's passion behind it and friendship and love and a culture."The two artists have also separately launched a number of other business ventures including an edible marijuana range and popular headphone company Beats by Dre.The post Ini Archibong designs packaging for Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre's Gin & Juice appeared first on Dezeen.

  • Nokia 7380 5G concept reimagines one of the quirkiest phones in history
    www.yankodesign.com
At this point in time, the design of smartphones is pretty much set in stone, at least disregarding novel designs like foldables and rollables. The candy bar form factor emerged as the standard, displacing even the fashionable clamshell flip phones that are making a comeback through small foldables, mostly because they are practical, handy, and efficient. There was a time, however, when phone form factors were all over the map, with brands like Nokia boldly experimenting with different designs that were functional but also a bit unconventional. The Nokia 7280 and 7380 lipstick phones were two of the phone manufacturers oddest creations, and one creator is bringing that past design to the present, giving it a modern touch to fit todays aesthetics.Designer: AndroidLeoThe Nokia 7380 was, strangely enough, part of the companys Fashion Phone line back in the early 2000s. At a time when people actually used mobile phones for phone calls more than anything else, it could easily get away with its stick-like design and tiny mirror-like screen. You cant do much else with it, other than listen to music and take photos that were already high-quality during that era, which sounds like the perfect recipe for a distraction-free, minimalist phone today. In that regard, the Nokia 7380 5G concept doesnt sound that outlandish after all. The design updates the aesthetics to modern standards, making use of interesting geometric shapes like a trapezoidal prism instead of a rectangular box, and puts a slightly taller screen that covers the whole surface this time around. It will still be too small to do anything productive like texting or even browsing the web, so it will mostly be for controlling the phone and launching apps that have to be custom-designed for that screen aspect ratio.Theres also a camera on the narrow side of the prism, hidden behind a sliding mechanism. Given todays technologies and the fact that this phone wont have much in the way of other components, there should be enough space for a 50MP or higher camera. The concept design, which is based on rumors, also puts a dual camera setup on the front, or rather where the screen is. Its not clear what the use case would be for having two cameras there, though. In a nutshell, this smartphone stick could be marketed as a device thats oriented towards music and photos, at least taking photos. There are two headphone jacks on one end, perfect for sharing your music with a friend, and the handy shape of the device makes it easy to take photos and selfies. Its like a fashionable action cam that can play music and make phone calls as well, though it also raises the question of who would want to buy such a curious but less usable smartphone in the first place. The post Nokia 7380 5G concept reimagines one of the quirkiest phones in history first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Best Weapons To Upgrade In Resident Evil Village
