• Intel is bringing GPUs to cars
    www.engadget.com
Intel has unveiled a discrete GPU for cars, the Arc A760A, designed to bring the "triple-A gaming experience" from home over to your car, the company announced. No automotive partners were revealed, but vehicles with the new chips will go on sale as soon as 2025.With car buyers increasingly focused on in-vehicle entertainment above all else, the chips are designed to "unlock a new era of AI-powered cockpit experiences," according to Intel's press release. The GPUs will allow voice, camera and gesture recognition to make it easy to control up to "seven high-definition screens rendering 3D graphics and six-in vehicle cameras and interactive features." At the same time, it can supposedly run demanding triple-A gaming titles, in-vehicle entertainment and AI-powered productivity apps.IntelThe system will also be highly personalized to the driver. It'll include the ability to "execute complex vehicle control commands through natural language processing, answer vehicle-related questions accurately, and even engage in leisurely chat with users, providing a more interactive and enjoyable journey," according to Intel.Intel added that it has created over 500 features and AI apps for automobiles, with over 100 independent software vendors working on in-vehicle experiences. In addition, the A760A will be fully compatible with software developed for its iGPU PC platform, while scaling from entry- and mid-tier vehicles up to higher-end cars.Intel said it wants to be the "go-to partner for automakers." It's clearly looking to diversify its offerings in the wake of quality-control problems with recent PC chips and financial woes that may see it lay off up to 15,000 employees. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/transportation/intel-is-bringing-gpus-to-cars-120057738.html?src=rss

  • With new changes at Southwest and Spirit, its getting harder to tell the airline brands apart
    www.fastcompany.com
Brandedis a weekly column devoted to the intersection of marketing, business, design, and culture.A surprising trend seems to have taken off among competing airline brands this summer: sameness. In recent weeks, two of the best-known low-price, low-frills carriers have announced moves that will maneuver them more toward the mainstream. This follows years of mainstream carriers having to absorb budget rivals tactics. The result now is a highly competitive category whose best-known brands appear to be flying in formation. The most notable change came just a couple of weeks ago, when Southwest announced it was doing away with its famous open-seating schemecore to the brands strictly value identity for half a centuryand offering premium seating. Even more recently, the infamously no-frills Spirit, which built a successful business out of rock-bottom basic fares and extra charges for practically everything (including carry-on bags), has announced upscale options including a tier with bigger seats, priority check-in, and even snacks. Its now going to be merchandised and sold like a traditional business-class product, Spirits CEO has said.If the budget carriers are becoming more like traditional airlines, thats partly because traditional airlines have become more like them. After shrugging off the discounters for years while focusing more on business travelers, American, Delta, and United began aggressively competing for their customers. By the late 2010s, the Big Three all had low-budget fare options with add-on fees for extras like better seats and priority boarding; United even started charging, Spirit-style, for carry-ons.The major airlines have only honed those budget offerings since the pandemic, as leisure travel has become an increased focus for all carriers. Earlier this year, United said quarterly revenue tied to its Basic Economy offering was up 20% from a year earlier. And while the Big Three could still do lots of upselling beyond the basics, discounters didnt have much of a counterpunch. Thus the recent moves by Spirit and Southwest to become more like their rivals. Discounter Frontier has also dabbled with its own upsells, such as Upfront Plus seating, basically guaranteeing that youre in the first couple of rows, next to an empty middle seat. According to a report in Axios, at least some on Wall Street expect JetBlue to offer a full-on first class option for domestic flights in 2025.If the discounters are conforming to an increasingly standardized playbook, well, thats what the top U.S. carriers have been doing for years: The three big airlines, which resulted from a series of mergers in the early 2000s, have copied and matched each other on fares, amenities, and strategies ever since. Even their plane interior color schemes seem interchangeable. The big three airlines have dissolved into one big homogeneous blob, a travel industry analyst told the Wall Street Journal in 2016. In the 1980s and 1990s, people said airlines were all alike. They were less all alike then than they are now. Another analyst complained of a continual decline in uniqueness since the 1970s.That big-carrier conformity used to be exactly the thing the upstart discounters rebelled against. But, for a few years now, its been rough going for discounters. Spirit has struggled with profitability since the pandemic, and Southwest has been under pressure from unhappy investors, particularly since a high-profile system meltdown in 2022. Both JetBlue and Frontier targeted Spirit for a merger, but a planned linkup of Spirit with JetBlue was blocked in the courts. Courts have also thwarted a plan for JetBlue and American to coordinate some routes and pool revenue. In a twist, as those former value-focused brands get increasingly absorbed into the mass market, the most notable maneuver among the Big Three has been in the other direction, as Delta has tried to position itself as the luxury carrier. That has included extra amenities for its SkyMiles members, and improvements to its Sky Club lounges, as well as (the company has said) a concerted back-end effort to improve on-time performance. This may have helped Delta become the most profitable carrier of the moment, but theres been some turbulence. Notably, it had to restrict certain Sky Club access in an effort to keep the crowds downseriously ticking off loyal customers. And during the recent global tech outage, Delta had to cancel thousands of flights, many more than rival carriers, for which it was recently slapped with a class action lawsuit. (The airline has blamed the meltdown on CrowdStrike and Microsoft, but those companies have pushed back, saying Deltas slow recovery was partly a function of its own outdated systems.)But even if its (more than) a bit soon to say whether Delta has convinced picky elite flyers that its the only brand for them, United, eyeing Delta, is adding upscale seating options and cabin improvements to attract that picky premium crowd. Breaking out of this formation wont be easy.

  • Bindloss Dawes adds chestnut-clad extension to old Somerset schoolhouse
    www.dezeen.com
Local studio Bindloss Dawes has completed the transformation of Old School House, a Grade II-listed house in Somerset that has been refreshed with a contemporary timber extension.Nestled within a valley in Pitcombe, the timber extension adds a modern twist to the 19th-century home while echoing its traditional pitched form. The original building was built in 1864 as a local village school before being converted to a home in the 1940s. Bindloss Dawes's extension replaces another from the 1970s.Bindloss Dawes has added a timber extension to an old schoolhouse in Somerset"The main adaptations to the existing building were concerned with resolving the consequences of the demolition of the 1970s extension, studio co-founder George Dawes told Dezeen."This involved some repair work to stonework, refinishing of external surfaces and generally revealing parts of the original building that had been covered over by later extensions. To complement the existing building, the extension by Bindloss Dawes features a matching pitched roof and is clad in silver-toned timber arranged in alternating directions. The studio replaced an existing extension to the home"It was critical for us that the building sat comfortably next to the listed property and within the valley and this is why we were informed by the design of the original school house, said Dawes."And yet upon closer inspection, the building is carefully detailed and unmistakably contemporary in its execution."The structure is clad with chestnut timberSelected for their stone-like silver tone after weathering, battens of English sweet chestnut vertically line the roof and first floor. Wider boards arranged horizontally clad the lower half of the exterior.Between the extension and the original building, the studio added glazed volume with a galvanised steel frame, designed as a garden room with views of the surrounding valley.A steel-framed volume connects the two buildings"We wanted to use steel as it allows a thin glazing frame, and we really like the finish of patinated galvanised steel, which is dark and has a natural, uneven quality, Dawes explained."Like the rest of the building, it was always intended that the finishes would weather and change over time, and the patinated galvanised steel has a weathered quality that we really like.Read: Studio Andrew Trotter transforms 19th-century school into family home in PugliaInside, both levels of the extension are accessed by a staircase to the side of the glazed garden room, made from rough-sawn chestnut chosen to reference the external cladding. An additional sequence of steps leads down to the ground floor, which is set at a slightly dipped level. Here, a bright corridor offers access to two ensuite bedrooms.A double-height living room and kitchen occupy the old structureThe bedrooms and bathrooms feature bold colours and artwork. Deep blue walls and turquoise ceilings are found in the bedrooms, while the bathroom is decorated with playful colour blocks of green and pink. The upper floor of the extension holds the main bedroom suite, which has large windows to provide panoramic views of the valley. Two ensuite bedrooms are hosted on the ground floorIn contrast to the boldly coloured spaces downstairs, the main bedroom is filled with neutral tones and topped by a white-painted pitched ceiling lined with beams. The interior of the existing building, which is accessed from the other side of the garden room, incorporates a large double-height living room and kitchen, as well as an entrance hall, bathroom, utility room and pantry.Bright colours feature across the ground-floor spacesWhile the original portion of the listed property was left largely untouched, stonework was repaired and historic features have been uncovered.Around the exposed original walls and celebrated historic features in each space are contemporary elements including bright chairs, modern flooring and a selection of artwork curated by the owners.Other residential extensions recently featured on Dezeen include a Belgian bungalow that has been refreshed with red timber cladding and a tiered addition to an early 1900s New York apartment building. The photography is by Francesca Ivene. The post Bindloss Dawes adds chestnut-clad extension to old Somerset schoolhouse appeared first on Dezeen.

With Parisian temperature in the 90s, some federations brought their own A/C units, and others opted to simply check into air-conditioned hotels. The US Gymnastics team opted to bring BedJets to the Village.
